A Message from the Headteacher
Well, that’s it! Another exams season has ended and we are delighted with the way our Year 13 and Year 11 students have conducted themselves during this challenging period. My thanks go to the staff and you parents/carers for the support you have all given to the students; we now wait to share in the celebrations on results days - Thursday 16 August for A Levels, Thursday 23 August for GCSEs. We look forward to most of our Year 11 students returning to us in Sixth Form and our best wishes go to those who have chosen other educational routes, as well as to our Year 13 students who are embarking on the next stage of their futures.

Students from Cockermouth
School have shone in this year’s
REACT Foundation bursary
awards. Since 2004, the REACT
Foundation has been making
annual bursary awards to
students from West Cumbria as
part of a suite of activities
designed to encourage young
people in the area to consider
higher education in science or
engineering. This year, the top
award has gone to Cockermouth
School student Chloe Hodgson
together with three other
Cockermouth School students –
Hazel Meier, Samuel Moore and
Sam Taylor picking up bursary
awards in Year 11. Cockermouth
School students have picked up
the top award on four occasions
and have also picked up a total of
12 Year 11 awards over the last
14 years - a fantastic record.
Pete Woolaghan, Chairman of
the Foundation said “I
am delighted that Cockermouth
School has once again come out
on top in our annual awards. The
Foundation has had a long and
productive working relationship
with the school. From science
shows to bursaries and even
putting cameras into space, it is
always a pleasure to see the
hard work of staff and students
shine through. This year’s
winner, Chloe, produced a
fantastic submission to pick up
our top award and it is true to say
that the standard of applications
has never been as high - well
done! As the REACT Foundation
approaches its 15th anniversary,
we hope to continue our work
with the school on projects to
inspire the students and help us
celebrate this important
anniversary for the
charity. Watch this space!”
The annual Year 13 May Ball took place on Friday 11 May at Hundith Hill Hotel. The evening was a huge success with over 120 students and members of staff attending the event. Many awards were presented on the evening including Happiest Person, Best Couple, Biggest Ego, Biggest Gossip and Best Twins. Over £800 has been raised by the students over the past year which will be
split between the following three charities: Cumbria NHS Trust, Savera UK and Child Bereavement UK. Our

Last week saw our feeder primary schools attend the Key Stage 2 cross-country event. In the Years 3/4's
race over 121 students ran from 7 of the primary schools with Daisy Woodcock coming home in first place -
well done Daisy! In the Years 5/6 race 91 students from 6 of the primary schools completed 2 laps of our
football fields in a very competitive race. The individual winner was Harry Johnson - well done Harry! The
overall winner of the team event was Fairfield Primary School, closely followed by Broughton Primary
School. Over 210 primary students attended this event with the support of their families, extended families,
friends and school staff. What a fantastic event and talking point for our local community.
Sports Leaders :
Our fantastic Year 10 sports leaders are continuing to support and give back to our local community through
various events. Last week was for the cross-country event where they marshalled, encouraged and recorded
all 210 runners from the afternoon. A special mention to Ben Jenkinson, Angus Lister and Jed Napier who
were our ‘hares’ for the race. They had their work cut out to stay in front!
Congratulations to all of our athletes who were chosen to represent Allerdale at the County Athletics Trial in Carlisle on Saturday 9 June. Well done to those who were placed in the top two of their event who now go on to represent Cumbria at Gateshead on Saturday 16 June. Outstanding performances across the board. Athletics is an event where Cumbrian athletes can compare themselves against the best in the country and our athletes really did step up!
