Independent schools, a type of private school, are distinguished primarily by their independent governance and financing. GREAT TEACHERSThe tight-knit communities at independent schools allow teachers to develop a full understanding of how each student learns and what motivates each individually. The High School Survey of Student Engagement (HSSSE), conducted by Indiana University, found that more than twice as many students at NAIS independent
schools received helpful feedback from teachers on assignments, compared to students at all other types of schools. Students who attended NAIS schools were more than twice as likely as students at other schools to say that the school contributed “very much” to their growth in critical thinking.

SUCCESS IN COLLEGE Independent schools provide challenging academics and opportunities to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, which prepares students for success at the next level. A study from the U.S. Department of Education found that 99 percent of students at NAIS schools graduated from high school and 90 percent of graduates attended four-year colleges.
Independent schools employ counselors who help students and their families explore all their options for college or secondary school, ensuring that the next school is a great
match for the student’s needs. The Freshman Survey Trends Report, an annual study conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute, found that NAIS school graduates felt more prepared for the academic demands of college than their public school counterparts. As college freshman, NAIS graduates reported that they were more likely to ask questions in class and explore topics on their own, even though it was not required for a class.
PREPARATION FOR LIFEThe Higher Education Research Institute also found that graduates from NAIS schools were more likely than public school graduates to have had an internship and to have accepted an offer of employment before
graduating from college. Independent education benefited graduates in adulthood too. The National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS) found that NAIS graduates were more likely to exercise regularly, volunteer in their communities, and read newspapers and magazines daily as adults.
Parents choose independent schools for their children because they understand that the best education is a value-added experience. Independent schools help prepare children not just for this year’s tests, but for all of life’s tests.

Seventy-eight percent of Americans describe the education that children receive in independent private schools as “excellent or good;” sixty-
nine percent say the same about parochial or church-related schools, while only thirty-seven percent think that way about traditional public schools. Results come from Gallup’s annual Work and Education poll conducted in August 2012.
Private schools have a long history and a respected record
of strong student performance. They give students a well-rounded education. They provide families with unique educational options and
alternatives to government schools. They are free of excessive government regulations and standardization that can stifle success, hinder creativity, and compromise a school’s identity. They reflect the beliefs and values of a particular community and weave those values into lessons that matter most for
living a productive, happy and meaningful life.
Choosing a school for a child is one of the most important
decisions parents must make. The right school for a child depends on that child’s specific needs. Just like children, different schools have different characteristics, and finding the right match between child and school is worth the time.
There are several steps involved in finding the best school for your child. First, consider your family’s values and beliefs and decide whether you want a school that supports and nourishes those values.
Second, look at your child. What kind of environment is

best for him/her? A school that promotes creativity, is structured, supports special learning needs, focuses on
particular gifts, or responds to a certain learning style? Is a particular pedagogy best suited for your child?
Third, visit the school and talk to administrators, teachers, and parents. What evidence does the school provide that
students are thriving, growing, and succeeding? What is the school’s curriculum, assessment program, extra-curricular
activities, fine arts, and sports programs? Does the school educate the whole child: intellectual, spiritual,
physical, social, cultural, aesthetic? What happens to students once they graduate? Is the school safe and orderly? Do students respect one another and their teachers? Are they focused on their work? Does the school welcome parents and see them as partners?
These are just some of the questions parents must answer when choosing a child’s school.

APPLYING TO INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS
In the fall, families investigate school websites, visit school open houses, and narrow down a list of the schools they’d like to apply to.
Most applications are due in the winter, but deadlines vary from school to school. It’s important to check the deadline for each school.
Independent schools often require:
A completed application form, available from the school website or by calling the admission office;
Your child’s most up-to-date academic transcript, with grades, from his or her current school;
Teacher recommendations;
Results of a standardized admissions test and/or a school-administered entrance exam;
A formal interview with your child.
Depending on your child’s age, some schools may also ask for parent statements describing the child; student essays; and/or student artwork, writing, or portfolios.
The admission office is also the best source of information about various options for paying for an independent school education. Many schools ask families to submit an application for financial aid at the same time as the admission application.
Independent schools ask students to apply for admission, and the admission process typically begins almost a year before the student wants to enroll.

Admission interviews with students and their families take place in the fall and
winter. For very young children, schools often conduct group interviews or have the child visit a class to help gauge whether the school is the right fit for the student ’s needs.
Each school works hard to assemble a student body that will benefit most from the type of education it offers. They also look for
students whose strengths and personalities will complement those of other
admitted students. Some schools weigh academic performance most heavily, but other schools look primarily at a student’s potential. Overall, each school aims to admit students
who are the right “fit” for the school, just as parents are looking for schools that are the right fit for their children and families. Independent schools typically send notifications about admissions decisions in the spring, but some schools offer rolling admissions (offers of admission are made until the class fills up).
For a student who’s accepted into several schools, a new challenge emerges—how to choose which to attend. Many schools allow admitted students to visit on a special day or provide some opportunity for students to visit the campus again. Sometimes, shadowing a current student can give the best sense of what it would be like to attend. For parents of prospective students, talking to current parents may help, too. Many schools provide contact information for parents who’ve agreed to speak about their experiences at the school. Reading the school’s newsletters and following it on social media can also help you get a sense of the school’s offerings and culture.

ABOUT INDEPENDENT PRIVATE SCHOOLS
What is an independent school? Is it the same as a private school?Yes. Independent schools are simply a particular kind of nonprofit private school, distinguished by having a freestanding board of trustees that is solely responsible for the school.
Aren’t all independent schools basically the same?Not at all. Just within our membership there is an extraordinary range of schools,
from small elementary schools to big boarding schools, and everything in between. While most schools are coed, a number are single- sex. Many schools have a particular religious affiliation or follow a particular educational philosophy. Some schools define themselves as traditional in their approaches; others see themselves as progressive. Every independent school has a unique mission that guides
the work and leadership of the school.
What’s wrong with public schools? Why would I pay for something that I already get for free?There’s nothing wrong with public schools, but at some point you may decide that your child is not thriving in your public school and that you want a different learning environment for him or her. You may feel that greater academic challenges

or more enrichment would allow your child to more fully reach his or her potential. One-size-fits-all just won’t work for every student. You might be concerned that your child is becoming negative about school, is coasting or seems to be lost in the shuffle, isn’t doing much homework, isn’t getting the needed support, or isn’t involved in extra-curricular activities. Or you might be concerned that the teachers don’t know your child as an individual or that the schools values and priorities don’t align with yours. Those are serious concerns. You could well decide that a private independent school is just what your child needs, and because education is a high priority in terms of your family’s resources, you are willing to make the necessary investments.
Does an independent school adequately prepare my child for the future?The best preparation for adulthood is an education rooted in strong values and a commitment to excellence in character as well as academics. This is the kind of education our schools offer. Most independent schools are intentionally diverse—racially, ethnically, geographically, and socioeconomically—which can set the right foundation for an increasingly complex and connected world.
How can I decide if an indep-endent school is a worthwhile investment in my child and her future?It all comes down to some basic questions: Are my child’s needs being met in his present
situation? Is my child engaged, nurtured, and challenged in her present situation? How important are those things to you? Would you consider a private college to be a worthwhile investment? As one parent told us, “My child having a good educational experience is more important than a dollar amount.”

Do you need to have low income to receive financial aid? Do schools have much financial aid to give out?“No” and “It depends.” Financial aid is based on your need, and many families with above-average incomes are surprised to find that they do qualify for some support. The amount of available aid varies from school to school. The average AISNE school provides financial aid to twenty-five percent of its families and the average grant is about $20,000 (note this includes boarding schools with higher costs). If you know that you will need financial aid, be sure to ask about it when you visit schools.
Independent schools must not be very diverse. Right?Actually, independent schools
are quite diverse, with our member schools reporting an average of eighteen percent students of color and an average of twenty-five percent of students receiving financial aid. Few suburban public schools could claim to be as racially and socio-economically diverse. So the independent school down the street may well be more reflective of the diversity of our society than your public school.
Why is small class size supposed to be so good for students?Primarily because having fewer students allows the teachers to: 1 get to know each student in depth, 2 be able to closely monitor the student’s progress, and 3 have the time to help when a student has difficulty.
When we ask parents what they like about their independent school, they always mention small classes and individual attention.
What’s involved in applying to an independent school?There are a number of steps to follow, including doing your homework to pick the schools that will be a good match, visiting the schools, filling out an application, filling out financial aid forms, arranging for any required testing, and arranging to have your current school send records and evaluations. Remember that the admission professionals at our schools are there to help you every step of the way.
