I believe the school year got off to a great start. I felt wonderfully supported by the BHS faculty, staff and administration. Students adjusted well to the start of the school year and the energy in the building felt very posi- tive and upbeat. I had my first parent round table group meeting, had attended most athletic matches at least once and had spent a significant amount of time visiting classes. Then I found out just how supported I truly was by those associated with Brunswick High School. On September 11, while driving to a meeting at the central office, I was involved in a motorcycle accident. Even when one rides as often as I have, there is still the thought in the back of your mind. It’s not a matter of “if” but rather “when” will my day come. The details of the accident are not important, but my day certainly came. I ended up at Maine Medical Center where I was in critical condition. My recovery has been swift and miraculous in large part due to the great people I have come to work with here at the high school. I have been back to work for three weeks, albeit shortened days. I plan to be in full swing before Thanksgiving and am certainly looking forward to catching up. I want to thank all of the BHS community for their support and I wish to get back in touch with you, the parents. On Wednesday November 14 th I invite you to join me for the second round table meeting. Hearing from parents and listening to what issues are on your minds is truly one of the most enjoyable parts to leading a school. I invite you to attend and if you are not able to be there, to feel free to connect with me anytime. I do want to share with you the two most outstanding moments I have experienced since returning to school. Naturally, I enjoy watching your children participate in any of our co-curricular programs. This story worth sharing happens to do with our athletic pro- gram. It is my true belief that the experience of participating is more important than the win/loss record. When I saw the Cheerleaders performing with younger, much younger, much shorter Brunswick students, I felt great pride in seeing BHS students being role mod- els and giving back. To those younger girls, who look up to the BHS Cheerleaders, they see them as true heroes. Then it happened again. Football game half time. Instead of rushing into the locker room, our players set up a greeting line to welcome the little, and I mean little, players to their half time game. Once again our students were being role models and heroes to these younger athletes. This is truly what it is all about. I am thankful to be healthy, to be back and to be working with such a wonderful group of faculty, staff, students, parents and community at large. A LETTER FROM MR. ABELMANN...

PRINCIPAL’S ROUNDTABLE...

FRESHMEN CLASS FUNDRAISER...

Members of the class of 2016 will be conducting their annual Fresh Florida Citrus Sale beginning November 1st through November 16, 2012. Orders will be taken for Fresh Florida navel oranges, ruby red grapefruit or a mixture of grapefruit and or-anges, available in 10 lb or 20 lb cartons. The cost of the 10 lb carton is $18 and is a nice choice for small households yielding approximately 16-18 oranges, 8-10 grapefruit, or a mix of 6-8 oranges and 5 grapefruit. If you prefer the larger 20 lb carton, the cost is a reasonable $24 and it yields approximately 24-40 navel or-anges, 16-24 ruby red grapefruit, or a mixture of 16 oranges and 9 grapefruit.

ENGLISH STUDENTS GO ON FIELD TRIP...

The next Principal’s Roundtable Discussion will be held on Wednesday, November 14th at 7pm in the BHS Li-brary.

“The Play’s the Thing” (Hamlet) Senior Academic English students in Ms.Shields’, Ms.Mutty’s, and Ms.Kelley’s classes attended a perform-ance of Hamlet by The Theater at Monmouth’s Shakespeare Company on November 1, 2012. This 90-minute production was designed for high school audiences and used contemporary costumes suggesting a modern interpretation of a classic play. These seniors will be reading and studying the play in English class following the live performance. We appreciate the school department’s and parental support of this aca-demic field trip.

Orders can be taken by any 9th grade student or by calling the class president, Will Bessey, at 729-9678 after 6pm. For further information or to place an order, call Mike Halmo at the high school Counseling Office, 319-1912. Orders are scheduled to be delivered before the Holiday break. All funds go toward senior year project graduation class activities.

BHS PLAYERS PRESENT...

The BHS Players will present their fall production, You Can’t Take It With You, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 15, 16, and 17 at 7PM in Crooker Theater, with an additional afternoon performance on Saturday the 17th at 2:00PM. This hilarious, classic comedy set in the 1930’s tells the story of the de-lightfully eccentric Sycamore family. When their daughter Alice falls in love with her boss’s son, Tony Kirby, she fears that his con-servative, stuffy parents will never understand her crazy family who amuse themselves with such things as snake collecting, ballet dancing, fireworks, and playing the xylophone. When the Kirbys arrive unexpectedly on the wrong night for dinner, the result is

pure comedy. Don’t miss this one!! Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for students and senior citizens and can be purchased at the door.

ATTENTION CLASS OF 2016...

In addition to our annual citrus fruit sale, the Class of 2016 will host a BAKE SALE table at the Hockey Boosters annual craft fair. Located right at BHS, this HUGE craft fair has many visitors from all over the state. Dates are November 17 and 18 (with set up on November 16). We will need volunteers to donate bake goods, help with set up, and work the table. Parents are encouraged to contact Jennifer Hinkley at 837-7404 to sign up for baking and/or volunteering. Students, please contact your class Vice President, Shelby Cash, for any further information. Student volun-teers are eligible for community service hours.

Do you like to build things? Are you pretty confident with a hammer, saw, or drill? Then BHS Players has an opportunity for you! The theater group at BHS is in great need of a few adults to help us with set construction for the next production in the spring. We will have the design and the materials, but we need help to realize our vi-sion. If you would like the opportunity to put your skills to work to help our theater program, please contact Pam Mutty at [email protected], or Carla Selberg at [email protected]. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

A review of the policy is as follows:

• Students must complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of community service as a graduation re-quirement. • Students need to earn five hours before their 11th grade year and fifteen before their 12th grade year to obtain off campus privileges.

• It should be noted, in 2008 the Brunswick School Board amended the policy to allow 8th graders to earn up to 10 hours towards their thirty hour requirement for graduation at Brunswick High School.

Certain job shadow opportunities may compliment the spirit of this requirement while also directly satisfying career objectives suggested by the Maine Learning Results. To the extent that these opportu-nities exist, pre-arranged and approved job shadow experiences may be used to fulfill up to ten hours of the thirty hour requirement.
