Next Meeting:

THERE WILL BE NO MEETING IN JANUARY. Waltherson has moved to quarterly meetings for

2014. Our next meeting will be held at Harbel at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, February 4th.

President’s Letter

Happy New Year! I hope the holidays were wonderful for you. Awh, the snow. It brings out the kid in me. I want to go play, but the age in my body keeps me snuggled on the couch with a warm blanket. It is quite beautiful to watch though, isn’t it?

I reflect over the past year & the accomplishments we’ve had, as well as the changes we’ve embraced. It’s been a year to stand up for what we believe in. We’ve helped neighbors move in, while lessening those that destroy. We’ve fought bills, stood up for change, stood at City Hall, broke bread together, partied, cried, rejoiced, & even sang together. It’s been a great year.

In partnering with my friend I told you I met up the street from me, our former WIA President Katherine Brown, I was reminded of a time when community service was a bit different in the 1980’s. There were no computers to make decisions via email. Copies were made the old-fashioned way & most newsletters (then called the Walthersonian) were hand delivered to your door. She pulled out her archived papers, showing the old zoning bills, newsletters, correspondences & lists of politicians. Copies of the Hamilton & Herald Gazette included ads from Cameo House, Wills Hair Salon, Gil’s Pizza, Lakein’s Jewelers, Hamilton Hardware, & even a WIA dance at The American Legion Hall to raise money for a WIA sign. Many of these are still in our neighborhood, so please support our local businesses.

Below is a picture of our members from 1985 when the Waltherson sign was put in on Walther Ave, landscaping donated by Walther Gardens, & the glassphalt street being installed, which came from our neighbors recycling glass for a period of time & gathered at a dumpster left at Harbel. What a blast we had looking through those memories. Thank you for saving these all those years, Katherine.

I was inspired by her ideas, many of which I will bring up for suggestion soon. These archives will go into our current files so that we have our history in detail during the 1980’s. Several things were consistent with what we share today: members who care about our community, Harbel Community Organization, & a list of Politicians to help us serve. These are our roots & that which sustains our strength today.

WE make up the community; please stay involved. Remember, the best way to meet folks is to get out & walk. Reach out to those during these cold months, check on our elderly or sick, & lend a hand. Someday, that hand could reach back to you.

Blessings to you & yours, Helene

IN AND AROUND WALTHERSON Christmas Caroling at Angel Cove The Christmas Carol Sing at Angel Cove got off to a rough start = a mix up on dates. But soon the residents and we (5 adults) were eating goodies and singing Christmas carols (and other songs) with guitar accompaniment and song sheets. Children were welcome, but none came this year. Simple rhythmic instruments added to the fun. It was a pleasure to see hands taping and people laughing. There are only 7 (at a maximum ) residents at this facility (it's a house near the corer of Belair and Frankford). Each person got toiletries, a cross word puzzle, and either a hat or socks. A simple table center piece was made out of Christmas cards and Christmas decorations. It looked to me that a good time was had by all - residents and visitors alike. Hope to see you next year at the sing, Louise

New businesses coming to Belair Road

Belair Road o Planet Fitness has signed a lease and will open its first Baltimore City location at

5201 Belair Road in the old Goodwill building just south of Frankford Ave. o Birdland Sports Bar & Grill coming to 6317 Belair Road near Glenmore by the

owners of Darker Than Blue selling comfort food; “hearty meals with hefty portions.”

Harford Road o BB&T Bank has opened at location at the old Wells Fargo / Wachovia building at

Hamilton & Harford.

Block Captains We’ve mentioned this in past newsletters & will continue to develop this concept. Since we are a small group, we need your help. If we utilize block captains as resources, we build a stronger team in all segments of the area. People would go directly to the block captains for their concerns. These would be filtered out, utilizing the resources & contact we have. Each block captain would have a list of contacts & then report back to the entire group & to the executive board. If everyone pitches in, we can all do our part. Please, find something that is your passion. Maybe gardening is your thing, maybe vacant houses really annoys you, maybe you want to help a neighbor whose house needs some repairs. Whatever be the case, if we all do our part, we can help each other.

Styrofoam / Polystyrene Recycling

If you want to recycle Styrofoam but cannot make it to the sanitation yard, Waltherson member Louise Harmony has offered to drop it off. Please get in touch with Robert Walshe at a meeting or by e-mailing us at [email protected] if you are interested. You can also leave a message for us on Facebook or tweet us @WalthersonAssoc. Note: CHECK THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER FOR A NUMBER 6. Only number 6 items are accepted. No peanuts or packing material.

NECOP – Northeast Citizens on Patrol In Northeast Baltimore we have a district wide Citizens on Patrol program called NECOP. The reasoning behind the COP program is that regular neighborhood patrols can make criminals feel uncomfortable and drive them out of our neighborhood. Participants meet at the Northeast Police station at 1900 Argonne Drive near Morgan State and get a walkie talkie to keep them in contact with the Police and then proceed to patrol their neighborhoods in their cars. Patrols normally go out each Thursday and Friday from about 7:30 - 10:30. For anyone interested in the Citizens on Patrol program, please contact Rob at [email protected].

Hamilton-Lauraville (HL) Sprouts

There’s a new family group in town. HL Sprouts is a parent partnership designed to allow parents of kids aged 0-12 to meet up, arrange play dates, and get to know other parents in the area. They are a chapter of the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance. Check them out, there are several kid-friendly meet ups going on each week in the area. https://www.facebook.com/groups/HLSprouts/
