Term 3 - Week 4

In week 3, four of our senior recorder students also had an amazing opportunity to play at the Sydney Opera House in the 2019 Festival of Instrumental Music. The evening allowed our students to share a world class stage with approximately 900 students from NSW public schools. Mrs Baines and myself were not only impressed with the talents of Lilly, Lawrence, Jerald and Brooke but also of the exceptional behaviour they displayed. A big thanks to Mrs Baines for organising this amazing learning experience.

Our school will continue to develop and display our musical talents through two more events over the next few weeks. A selected group of our choir students will perform at the Blacktown Music Festival Rosella Concert, on the 10th September at Wyndham College! Our school has rejoined this festival, along with 24 other schools, to allow students another opportunity to display their skills and talents in music. Tickets for this event went on sale on 12th August through www.trybooking.com/BEJML. Be quick, tickets sell out very fast and a limit of two tickets per family exist. Our annual Performance Night is also fast approaching on 18th September. On this night families have the opportunity to see all our performance groups present the items they have been practising all year. We look forward to seeing you all at this event. Our annual Dads and Doughnuts event is also fast approaching. Save the date for 29th August. We will once again be having a Hot Rod show free of charge for everyone to enjoy. If you or a family member wish to display your car/bike on the day please see Mrs Warner to organise this. The PSSA finals series is also coming up, along with K-2 Athletics carnival, Principal’s Award morning tea, Stage 2 excursion, Performance Night BBQ and AFL after school clinics. Keep an eye out for more information on all of these events. Some events also request parent helpers. If you are able to help out for any event, please see the office (Please note- excursions do not require parent helpers). We look forward to a busy remainder of Term3. “For me REAL superheroes do not wear capes, they TEACH! They are real and they exist… they are our teachers!” Francis Year 2 Jodi Warner Principal

Deputy Principal’s Message

Congratulations to our most recent Gold Award winners. It is fantastic to see so many students achieving their Gold Award and moving on to their Principal Award.

In Week 3 we had our annual Athletics Carnival at Charlie Bali Reserve. It was a great day for all, especially the students who gave their best in the track and field events. We had more students attend and participate in the carnival than we have had for a number of years. Thank you to all of the boys and girls that participated and thank you to the parents and friends who came to watch. All of our students should be proud of their achievements on the day regardless of whether they came first or last or anywhere in between. A positive attitude, the spirit of participation and good sportsmanship are the most important skills we need to make a carnival successful. A huge thank you to the volunteers who organised and ran the BBQ on the day. It was certainly appreciated by the hungry students, staff and spectators. Jenny Moon-Tume Deputy Principal

Early Stage 1 Report

We are off to another busy start in Term 3! The students have settled back into their routines and are continuing to make wonderful progress each day. There has been so much excitement in the first few weeks with lots of new experiences for Kindergarten including 100 Days of Learning, Open Day and the book fair. We also have our athletics carnival coming up on Tuesday 27th of August, which Kindergarten have been preparing for. This term in writing, Kindergarten are learning to construct persuasive texts to try and convince their audience regarding a particular topic. So far we have looked at animals and toys. The teachers have all been very impressed with the reasoning put forward by the students. We are also continuing to work on phonics in order to develop independent reading skills. I encourage all students to keep participating in home reading. We are focusing on the use of mathematical language in numeracy and the students are also learning to apply mathematical reasoning when problem solving.

They are developing the skills to explain how they obtained an answer, to help them see how to improve. Our Science unit looks at the materials that different products are made of and their properties. We have been doing lots of hands-on experiments to determine if particular materials are waterproof and strong. It has been great to see so much enthusiasm from the students. At the end of Term 3, Kindergarten will be performing at our assembly on Friday 27th September. Please mark this date in your diary as I know the children would love for you to come and support them. Stage 1 Report Term 3 has gotten off to a flying start! Stage 1 students have been working hard on Persuasive Writing and are practising hard to convince people of the best sports to play and the best pets to own. We are continuing our Mathematics investigations and Stage 1 teachers are pleased to see so many students engaged in their Daily Number Sense activities. So far this term we are very lucky to have enjoyed a visit from the Camp Quality puppets. The show was very entertaining, extremely funny and, most importantly, incredibly informative.

During Education Week in Week 3, we celebrated our 100 Days of Learning after completing 100 Morning Routines. We are so grateful to Mrs Warner for our lovely cakes.

Stage 2 Report

It is unbelievable how quickly Term 3 is moving on. It seems like we have blinked and then suddenly we are already into Week 4! Our explicit modelled writing lessons, with Year 3 writing a Warning Tale and Year 4 writing an Adventure Tale have now wrapped up. The teachers are in the process of analysing the student hot tasks to determine areas in which we excelled and areas in which further work is needed. From talking to the Stage 2 teachers and being involved in some lessons, I have been impressed by how well the students retained what had been taught over the holiday break. The work samples that have been sent to me as supervisor have been impressive and I know quite a few merit Certificates have gone out with the fantastic work that has been produced. Our classes are now progressing to a reading and writing unit aimed at reading and

composing informative texts. I can’t wait to see our results continue to improve in English. Payments have now ceased for our Term 3 excursion to the city for the Chinese Whispers and Dirt Diggers programs. Both programs, which link to our Semester 2 History program, look to be amazing with a jam-packed day of fun and learning to be had. The students and teachers can’t wait for this exciting day in a few weeks. I look forward to sharing photos from our excursion and work samples from our learning in Term 3 in the next newsletter.

Stage 3 Report

Year 6 shirts We understand there has been a very long delay on the delivery of these and we thank you for your patience. This is not a situation we have had before and will take steps to ensure it does not happen again in future. We have been informed by the company that they should be here any day now. Stage 3 Camp A reminder that students attending camp should now have paid $170.00 – the last $50.00 is due on 18th September. Please remember the date as it is important all payments are finalised by this time. It will be here before we know it! Open Day BBQ and Cake Stall A big thank you to those Year 6 families who donated items to sell at the cake stall during Open Day last Thursday. We appreciate your time and effort. Congratulations to Maya 6C for her beautifully decorated Lion King cupcake! A huge thank you to those parents who donated their time to cook and serve on either the BBQ or the cake stall. Some of these parents even did a ‘double shift’ – having done the P&C BBQ at the athletics carnival the day before. We really appreciate your support. Thank you, as well, to all families who supported our fundraiser by purchasing items on the day. Year 6 Farewell Meeting The next farewell meeting is this Friday, 16th August @ 3.30pm in 5/6H.
