Transcript of Walking together to the water - Franciscan Renewal...

Walking together to the water On Ash Wednesday we were

reminded that Lent is a time to repent and turn around our lives. This is a time of conversion, leaving behind an old way of living and

embracing new life in Christ. Are we just giving up something for Lent or are we working on making lasting changes in our lives? How do we do this? Our Elect – those who are preparing for baptism, provide us with a tool to examine our lives and grow in our life-long journey of conversion. This tool is the ancient rite of the Scrutinies. To scrutinize is to look at something very closely. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover all that is weak or sinful in the heart of the Elect and strengthen all that is upright and good. The rite includes two distinct parts: the scrutiny and the prayer of exorcism. The core of these rites is not about the sinfulness of the Elect; it is the overwhelming grace of God in Christ. The exorcisms are not a fear-laden bout with Satan; they are grace-filled encounters with the healing power of the Spirit.

We are not the ones to scrutinize the Elect; we have already given our “yes” at the Rite of Election. The Elect scrutinize their own lives and allow God to scrutinize them. But this time of introspection is also for us! We too can open our hearts and look within. We can celebrate the gift of Reconciliation and experience healing, and we can pray for the Elect and one another as we journey together to the water. This Lent let us use the example of the Elect to open our hearts to the grace and healing of Christ. Let us look within, repent and be freed from sin to live as resurrected people this Easter.

Blessings,

Patty Tafolla, Director of Catechetical Ministry

LITURGY CONNECTION

Simple Thoughts... “Zeal for your house consumes me.” ~ Merriam-Webster defines zeal as a strong feeling of interest and enthusiasm that makes someone very eager or determined to do something. In the Gospel, Jesus saw injustice. He saw how the moneychangers where taking advantage of the poor. They were abusing their power and Jesus cleaned house. Zeal consumed Him and He did something about it. He removed the distractions and the barriers that were keeping people from experiencing the presence of God and restored the people’s focus. This act was about more than just the building itself; it was about the dignity due to the place where God’s presence is. After He showed the dignity due to the Temple, Jesus established himself as the new Temple, revealing that this dignity must extend beyond the doors of a building. In the first reading, we are given the Ten Commandments. These are key “words of everlasting life” that we sing about with our Psalm. They guide us in our relationships with God and our relationships with others. They establish dignity to those relationships. Our relationships, our very lives reveal God. We, too, are temples where God dwells. In Built of Living Stones, our Church teaches us that, “From the altar of the cross, Christ accomplished our redemption, forming a holy people, a ‘temple of God built of living stones, where the Father is worshiped in spirit and in truth.’” Zeal for God’s house should consume us. ~ May we uphold the dignity of the Temple of God, both the buildings where God’s presence is and in us, temples of God.

The design of our new church continues to take shape.

As we continue to design, develop and refine our new places of gathering and worship, we invite you to keep this process in your prayers. Together we share the work of RENEWING LIVES now and for generations to come.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated with the entire community tomorrow evening, Monday, March 9th at 7:00 pm. Lent is always a good time to celebrate this beautiful sacrament: the Church’s proclamation of God’s great love for us through the forgiveness of our sins. The point of Lent is conversion of heart – conversion toward living a life following the Gospel of Jesus more closely. Seal that commitment through this celebration of reconciliation, and experience the peace that comes from hearing the beautiful words of absolution.

We gather at these “communal celebrations” to make a fresh start together. Many people see in penance only its difficult side and its emphasis on sorrow. But it has also a more joyful side, and it looks more to the future than to the past. Through penance, God calls us to a new beginning. We can find true freedom as God’s sons and daughters.

FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

Family Faith Activities March 8Third Sunday in Lent

In today’s Gospel we hear that people are selling things and exchanging money in God’s Temple. Jesus wants the people to stop turning God’s house into a market place. He is very angry and drives out all the sellers and moneychangers. Jesus then tells the people that the Temple will be destroyed and rebuilt in three days. They did not understand that he was speaking of his crucifixion and resurrection. Gather your family and ask: “What are some places that we believe are holy? What makes a place holy? What do we do at holy places?” Read John 2:13 -25 and discuss:

Why does Jesus go to the Temple? What are the sellers and moneychangers doing in the Temple?

What does Jesus do to them?

Anger and Reconciliation: Have a family discussion about anger. Participate in the communal penance service with your family. Remind your children that God always loves us and is willing to forgive us.Temple Art: Have each person draw or trace an outline of a temple/church on heavy paper or poster board. Use colored markers or crayons to decorate. Then draw a sign pointing to the temple that says: “Worship here."Concluding Prayer: Pray the Lord’s Prayer and exchange a sign of peace.

Family Catechesis Lenten RetreatOur families spent the day learning about fasting, prayer and almsgiving.

RENEWING LIVES Ourselves. Our Communities. Our World.

Faith is much more than showing up for Mass The Casa is at the core of

my faith. This is mainly because it has always been there for my family and me.

My relationship with the Casa began early in my life, when our family moved from New

York to Arizona in 1971. It was a major change, especially for a 12-year old. One good thing my Mom and Dad told us was that we had already found a new church.

The Franciscan Renewal Center was there with open arms, even putting us up for a number of days until our new home was ready.

How about that! Father Michael, Father Barry, Brother

Damian and all the rest helped me understand that faith was much more than showing up for Mass every Sunday.

That feeling of community at the Casa continues to this day. - Cary

Cary's relationship with the Casa continues to grow; he has recently become a member of the RENEWING LIVES Communications Committee.

Since 1951, the Casa has been renewing lives through spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and serving others.

And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”- Matthew 12:49-50
