Practice GratitudeAs our weather starts to warm up

things around here, slow down just a bit. The timing is perfect to Practice Gratitude – taking time to notice and reflect upon the things we are

thankful for. Every morning when I pull into the parking

lot and see the future of the Casa unfolding before my eyes, I am grateful for all the many benefactors who are making the new church possible. And I am grateful for the men and women working in the hot sun to build our beautiful new place of worship.

I am grateful that God directed me in ways years ago that gave me the opportunity to work here at the Casa where I have learned to appreciate and love the Franciscan tradition.

As much as I hate to say it, I am grateful for the political discourse that we have been hearing as of late. Even on a good day it is distasteful, filled with ugly words causing many of us to fear our future. How can I be grateful for this? Because it forces me to realize that no human leader can take away my fear of the future, so I must fix my eyes on Jesus – He is in control. I am grateful for the reminder to be a person of faith and hope for our future.

I am grateful for the countless number of volunteers who come forward and say “yes” when an opportunity is presented. And I am grateful that so many of you came out last month for an evening under the stars allowing the Casa staff to show you how much we appreciate you.

I encourage you to practice gratitude by recognizing what you’re grateful for, acknowledge it, and then take the time to appreciate it.

Peace and Grace,

LITURGY CONNECTION

Simple oughts... God is a relationship. ~ At rst, it may be di cult for us to grasp the idea of many things making up one object, but it isn’t a foreign concept to us. We experience this over and over in our everyday life. An engine, wheels, transmission and many other parts all work in relationship to make one car. A processor, hard drive, RAM, wiring and circuits all work in relationship to make the one computer used to write this re ection. Bronze wire wound around a steel core make up strings that resonate in relationship to a wood soundboard to make up one guitar. We can move these examples from the physical to mystical by looking at ourselves. Two people become one esh in a relationship of love, and in relationship, the two form one family. Sometimes that family grows further with children, but in relationship, they always remain one family. is is the reality we celebrate in our feast today. A father and a son share the same spirit of love, binding them together as one, our God, the Trinity. Our readings today speak of this relationship. Proverbs uses “the wisdom of God” to show us the Spirit, in relationship, even before time. God became man in Jesus to be in relationship with us! In the Gospel, he promises us the Spirit will remain, and so, in that Spirit the relationship grows to include us so that we, as the second reading says, may “boast in hope of the Glory of God!” Grace has brought us into relationship with our God, the Trinity.

FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

First Reconciliation! First Communion! Confirmation! Register Now for 2016-17

Family Catechesis is a faith formation model that supports parents and children in their spiritual growth. Our job is to provide you with the tools and support to raise your children in the faith. This model provides you with an opportunity to meet other parents, to learn and grow through activities with your children and for your children to create friends and community. · Sessions are held on Sunday mornings at either 9:15 am or 11:00 am· Younger grades (Pre k – grade 3) learn thru Godly Play where children discover who God is through the principles of the Montessori Method.· New programs for grades 4 – 6! These grades continue their faith formation by attending the monthly Family Catechesis session along with a second monthly meeting focusing on growing in faith through hands on learning, service, and social interactions. · Junior High Youth Ministry for grades 7-8 provides a safe and fun place for students to grow in faith and build community. Led by James Whitaker and team, this group meets twice a month at 11:00 am – 12:00 pm.Sacrament Preparation· First Reconciliation Grade 2 · First Communion and Confirmation Grade 3· Sacrament preparation is a two year program with families concurrently participating in Family Catechesis. Families new to our programs will be invited to participate in our Families First curriculum – sessions to introduce parents to family based faith formation.Early Registration continues this week. Email Patty at [email protected] or Mary Allen at [email protected] for more information. New families are encouraged to set up an appointment to go over the program in person.

Family Faith Activities May 22 The Solemnity of the Holy Trinity First there was Lent, then there was Easter and Easter season. Now we are back to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. We are invited to consider what we believe about the one God in three persons and learn about God’s love. God has lavished us with his love in the persons of the Son and Spirt, we in turn open ourselves to an awareness of the divine life within us. Thus participating in the endless spiral of love as we share

selfless love in our family. Gather your family and ask them to share one thing that they love most about the family. Read John 16:12-15 and discuss:

What does Jesus tell his disciples about the Holy Spirit? Why is the Holy Spirit described as the Spirit of Truth? How will the Holy Spirit help the disciples?

Sign of the Cross: Teach the youngest members of the family how to make the Sign of the Cross. Before meals, before bed, when people head out the door for work or school, bless them with the Sign of the Cross. Circle Up: Draw three large connecting circles on a large paper. On top of each write God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Invite your family to brainstorm what images come to mind for each of the persons. Then draw or write those images on your paper. Concluding Prayer: Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

In the midst of a busy life, many people find it difficult to notice God’s action in their daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, many of us long for a more conscious experience of God’s presence and love.

A spiritual director/companion is trained to listen and encourage you to explore a closer relationship with God through conversation, listening and prayer.

FAITH IN ACTION PROGRAMS

Congratulations to the2016 Peace Award Honorees!

Save the date: Casa Peace Awards Dinner on Wednesday, September 21 when we present Sr. Adele O’Sullivan, CSJ, of Circle the City and Jim Flickinger of Amazon Relief with this year's Casa Peace Awards.

Jim FlickingerJim is a Secular Franciscan from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is an attorney by profession; however, sixteen years ago he retired from the practice of law to devote his full time to serving the poor. During the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, Jim coordinated relief programs which brought medicines and medical equipment to hospitals; helped in refugee centers; established a program whereby Americans financially supported impoverished children; and built a “Park of Peace” in Sarajevo with the assistance of all three warring sides.

Twenty years ago he set up a program to feed and provide social outings for the inner-city poor and homeless in Grand Rapids. And for 21 years he has coordinated Amazon Relief, a program to help “at risk” children, lepers, and the poor living in the Amazon. In 1995 he was invited to the White House, and after

meeting with President and Mrs. Clinton, the President said in his comments at a press conference: “ I don’t know that I’ve ever felt more proud to be an American than when I’ve heard you talk. It is very important that these efforts continue, and in fact be intensified. This kind of energy can turn nightmares into peace.”

In 2000 Jim received the National Peace Award given by the National Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order. Previous recipients of this same award include St. John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa.

If you missed Sr. Adele's peacebuilding work in last week's bulletin, you can view it online at thecasa.org

The original super Brother MarioOur beloved Br. Mario

Vasquez, OFM passed away on May 3, 2016. It is with both sadness and faithful hope that the entire Casa community joins in prayerful gratitude for the gifts he shared with us for more than 40 years.

Mario was born in Los Angeles on September 3, 1930. He entered the Franciscan Order in San Miguel, California in 1957 and made his Solemn Vows in 1961. In his 50+ years in the Order, he served most of his vocation at the Casa, with brief assignments at Holy Cross Retreat Center in Mesilla Park, New Mexico in the 1970s and at the Old Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, California.

His work was primarily outdoors in the gardens, but he also enjoyed being a sacristan at daily Mass each morning. For many years, Mario was the only gardener working here at the Casa ... it now takes dozens of people to do what Mario once did alone!

"Brother Mario has always been my spiritual rock, a patient golf coach, and a supportive, loyal, compassionate friend – the big brother I never had," said community member Cheryl Rexford during the 2013 celebration of Mario's 40 years of service with the Casa. "He’s been my personal 'Saint Francis.'"

About the Franciscan Renewal CenterThe Franciscan Renewal Center began in 1951 as a place for retreat programs. Affectionately known as the “Casa de Paz y Bien” or simply “the Casa,” it is today a Catholic renewal center in Paradise Valley, Ariz., offering spiritual growth, healing and transformation that moves lives into the service of others. The Casa is an active religious community of the Order of Friars Minor — part of the worldwide Franciscan family, following in the footsteps of Sts. Francis and Clare of Assisi. The Casa is a wholly owned entity of the Franciscan Province of Saint Barbara, based in Oakland, Calif., that works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

Activities at the Casa include daily and Sunday Mass, retreats, gathering space for non-profit groups, licensed behavioral health counseling, as well as more than 50 volunteer ministries that give aid to the poor or vulnerable, empower individuals to improve their circumstances, and build community fellowship.
