WALKING
TOUR OVERVIEW
Cruise the sapphire waters of the rugged coast of Tasmania and enjoy coastal walks of outstanding beauty. This
tour combines an expedition cruise with walks on some of Tasmania’s best walking tracks. Guided by
experienced bush-walkers, you can choose the longer day hikes, the shorter casual walks, or simply stay on
board your luxury small ship and enjoy Australian hospitality. Visit the remote beauty of Port Davey, the dolerite
columns at Cape Hauy, the blue gum stands at Fortescue Bay, the pink granite peaks of Freycinet and Wineglass
Bay, and historic Port Arthur. After the day’s exertions, retire to the Coral Discoverer’s panoramic Explorer bar and
delight in the delicious meals. A day in Hobart allows time to visit the outstanding Museum of Old and New Art.

DAILY ITINERARY
Fly from Auckland to Hobart. Stay in a comfortable, centrally located hotel
providing easy access to the highlights of the city. Enjoy a welcome dinner
this evening.
A free day to explore Hobart before embarking on the Coral Discoverer at
Hobart’s Princes Wharf at 4pm for a 5pm departure. We recommend you
visit the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) or travel to Mt Wellington, the
1270m peak which provides the dramatic backdrop to the city and offers
stunning views over the city.
The Captain and Expedition Team will make daily itinerary decisions to
maximise guest experiences and take advantage of opportunities opened
up by weather. There will be a daily briefing onboard to advise guests on
the upcoming day’s activities. The expedition will visit Port Davey and
Bathurst Harbour conditions permitting. If not able to reach particular
places, an alternative destination more appropriate to the weather
conditions will be chosen by the Captain. We aim to visit the destinations
listed under Expedition Highlights.
Arrive and disembark at Hobart’s Princes Wharf at 8am. Fly back to New
Zealand in the late morning to Auckland or mid-afternoon for flights to
Wellington or Christchurch.
TOUR MANAGER John Matheson will be your tour manager. He has worked in the travel
industry for over 40 years, the majority of these as a director of Calder &
Lawson. He has led many overseas walking tours and has travelled
extensively in Australia. He is looking forward to walking and exploring
some special ‘off the beaten track places’ in this amazing land. If you
have any queries about the tour, give John a call.

• Mt Beattie is an easy to moderate walk
located close to magnificent Port
Davey. The raw and remote beauty of
this wilderness area is enhanced by
the breath taking views over Bathurst
Channel and Bathurst Harbour.
• Walk: 3 hours return. • Grade 2/3 walk: some bush-walking
experience recommended. Tracks
may have short steep hill sections, a
rough surface, and many steps.
EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS

Cheeses, the only organic sheep
cheesery in Australia. Taste up to eight
different products and view the
process of cheese making from
paddock to palate.

Discovery Centre and learn about
marine species such as lobsters, urchins
and octopuses.

IS THIS TOUR FOR ME? This trip involves moderate to challenging walks, therefore reasonable mobility is required to enjoy all it has to
offer. The Xplorer tender permits easy boarding without climbing any stairs. Hikes vary in intensity and where
possible we split groups to suit easy and moderate walkers. People are welcome to opt out of any excursion and
relax onboard – the top deck outdoor lounge is great on a sunny day. As the itinerary covers remote regions, it is
not suitable for passengers with serious medical conditions. Note the summer temperature can still be very cool,
especially with the wind chill, so warm layered clothing is essential.
FORTESCUE BAY TO WATERFALL BAY
• The Fortescue Bay to Waterfall Bay trail is
noted for providing an experience of
some of the most magnificent coastline
in Tasmania. The rainforest and blue gum
stands and views of the Tasman
Peninsula are nothing short of
spectacular. At the end of this longer
medium grade walk, the Coral
Discoverer will be waiting to collect
hikers.
• Walk: 7 hours return (16km one way).
• Grade 3 walk: some bush-walking
experience recommended. Tracks may
have short steep hill sections, a rough
surface, and many steps. Some
hazardous cliffs and unprotected track
edges.
FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK &
WINEGLASS BAY
• The spectacular peninsula of Freycinet is
crafted from pink granite peaks – the
Hazard mountain range – surrounded by
azure bays and backed by dry
eucalyptus forest. Enjoy a hike to
Wineglass Bay Lookout and later, join a
beachcombers walk along Wineglass
Bay, consistently voted one of the most
breath taking beaches in the world.
• Walk: 1–1.5 hours return (3 km return).
• Grade 3 walk: steep uphill climb
one-way with rough bush steps.
BISHOP AND CLERK
• Bishop and Clerk is a challenging walk
located in the Maria Island National Park.
Pass through diverse landscapes of
grasslands and forest, to emerge
overlooking a dramatic and sweeping
view of the Southern Ocean.
• Walk: 3.5 hours return (12 km return).
• Grade 4 walk: bush-walking
experience recommended. Tracks may
be long, rough, and steep. Signage may
be limited. Hazardous cliffs, unprotected
track edges, rock scree scramble.
