preSident’S meSSageswcc PREsidEnT’s REPoRT 2015 annual GEnERal mEETinG

after about three years of meetings and discussion the Community Centres of richmond Kings (rKCC) and Waverley Heights (WHCC) were officially dissolved on november 17, 2014 and the south Winnipeg Community Centre was formed.

the Board currently has strong representation from both the former WHCC and rKCC and has been working well in the initial seven months.

i want to highlight a few of our accomplishments to date:• Development of a new sWCC website that has detailed information

on all of the programs as well as an online calendar of events.• improved communications with a combined printed newsletter

that went out in February, social media presence with both a sWCC Facebook and twitter account established.

• spring sports programs all had new online registration elements.• strong Board representation from all sports programs• Bank accounts of both Centres have been merged in to one and

an initial operating budget has been established

movinG foRwaRd

While the progress to date has been positive there are still a number of issues that the Board is working on:• Development of a staffing plan that includes clear job descriptions

and a staff evaluation process• Development of a policies and procedures manual in regards to

the operations of the organization.• Development of a new brand/logo/team names for the new

sWCC. Graphic arts students at manitoba institute of trades and technology have been engaged to help with this process.

• review of the current programming provided by sWCC and identification of possible new programs.

in addition residents should be aware of some new developments that sWCC is currently undertaking that are in various stages of completion:• new splash pad at WHCC location (opened in June)• newly renovated main Hall at rKCC location• Fencing around sandusky Baseball Field – expected to be

completed by end of summer

Finally there has been much discussion over the past number of years in regards to a new regional recreation facility to meet the needs of the growing community in which we all reside.

the sWCC executive has been working closely with the City of Winnipeg in particular Councillor Janice lukes and we can confirm that funding has been secured to move forward on the initial phase of development of a Waverley West recreational facility. this first phase of funding ($350,000) will be used to commission a feasibility study to determine the scope and obtain a Class 3 estimate for the development of an integrated multi-use community campus in the expanding Waverley West Community. the City of Winnipeg is working towards the consolidation of facilities in all future recreation developments with a focus on developing multi use facilities (ie: libraries, water amenities, fitness, skateboard parks, basketball courts, arenas, etc.)

By september 2015 City administration is to provide a full report to standing Policy Committee on Property and Development with respect to the process for undertaking a regional community recreation campus feasibility study, in the context of the 2013 YmCa-YWCa budget approval and business plan including, without limitation:

• human resources required;• financial resources required;• land consolidation / in-kind contributions required; and• partnership opportunities.

it has been an honour to lead the newly established sWCC Board of Directors since its inception and i look forward to working with the great community leaders that have volunteered their time and tremendous staff as we continue to address the needs of the community with future development.

CounCillor JaniCe luKeSi’m approaching one year as your new City Councillor for south Winnipeg – st. norbert ward and have to say WoW – what a year! i am very thankful for the 14 years of community work i did prior to being elected as the experience i gained is now invaluable in my work as your City Councillor.

• waRd communicaTion: effective communication within the ward is critical. i need to hear

from you – you need to hear what is going on in the ward. i’ve built a website www.Janicelukes.ca highlighting: ward priorities, activities, events, issues and more. i twitter almost daily (@Janicelukes) and link to Facebook (Councillor Janice lukes) and email a monthly ‘e-newsletter’ – send me an email if you’d like one, past newsletters are on the website! the budget allows me to hire one full time assistant, but find we are challenged by the tremendous volume of incoming email and phone call inquiries. to help resolve this, i’ve developed an internship program for university students and have secured two interns to help with office duties, phones, emails, etc. Currently i’m working with the mayor, Cao and Coo to improve 311 services. i’m hoping these communication initiatives help improve the delivery of City services to you.

• wavERlEy wEsT REcREaTion comPlEx: south Winnipeg continues to be one of the fastest growing

areas of Winnipeg and we have reached the point where we are in need of expanded recreational facilities. if you are not familiar with the Waverley West recreation Complex initiative – please see updates on my website, under Ward Priorities. i’m working with the YmCa who has expressed a sincere interest in becoming a partner in this complex, along with the south Winnipeg Community Centre and other local partners. i’ve also toured a complex in edmonton that would be similar in nature with aquatics, rinks, library, fitness, multicultural centre and more. this is one of the most important ward initiatives occurring in south Winnipeg and i’m pleased to have the support of so many helping move this forward. i encourage you to look at all the details of the project on my website.

again, i encourage you to go to www.Janicelukes.ca to learn more about what is occurring in the south Winnipeg – st. norbert ward. sign up for a monthly ‘e-newsletter’ and if you have inquiries, concerns or great ideas for our ward – please email or call the office: [email protected] or 204 986-6964 thank you!
