KICKS SUMMER 112 IRISH TATLER JUNE 2014 The top 20 dates for movers ‘n’ shakers this summer, by Amie-Jo Locke. LANA DEL REY The undisputed princess of smouldering Hollywood pop and self-professed ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’, Lana Del Rey makes a welcome return the Emerald Isle on 15 July following her stunning sold-out performances at Dublin’s Vicar Street last year. Performing as part of Cork’s illustrious Live at the Marquee festival, fans can expect to hear more from Lana’s forthcoming (and hotly anticipated) album Ultraviolence, and given that she’s more than fond of her Irish following (nearly everyone in the front rows of the Vicar Street shows had some kind of gift bestowed on them, be it a beaded bracelet or a Del Rey group hug) we anticipate a hugely electric performance from this incredibly talented young lady. Wear a slick of starlet-red lippy in honour of the occasion. Tickets from 45. ticketmaster.com THE GALWAY ARTS FESTIVAL Beloved by all west-coasters and beyond, the Galway Arts Festival from 14 to 27 July is already packing a cultural punch with its impressive initial line- up announcements that bill the likes of broody Brooklynites The National and rockabilly mama Imelda May at the top of the infamous Festival Big Top. Other highlights include the world premier of Enda Walsh’s new play Ballyturk, in association with Landmark Productions, and starring the glorious Cillian Murphy (wearing a rather fetching sweater no less) being staged at Galway’s Black Box Theatre from the 14th. With the full line up due to be disclosed on 28 May, you can be sure of many more exciting acts being added to to event. See Galwayartsfestival.com for more details. LOUGHCREW OPERA FESTIVAL Running over the weekend of the 12 and 13 July, the stunning Loughcrew House in Oldcastle, Co Meath hosts a weekend of operatic fun paired with a sumptuous dining experience. Each performance will feature music from celebrated operas such as Carmen and La Traviata (under the instruction of Entertainers of the Year 2012/13 winner Niall Morris and his team) and will accompany a themed Italian or French three course meal set in the intimate surroundings of the courtyard. A Tuscan Soirée begins at 7.30pm on the 12th, and the Déjeuner en Provence will be held at lunchtime the following day. Guests are encouraged to dress in 1950s European glamour. Prices are from 60 per person. See Loughcrew.com for more. DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES It’s already been pinned on every hipsters’ tweed lapel as THE gig of the summer, and how could they be wrong? With hits like Maneater, Out of Touch, and I Can’t Go for That (No can Do), Daryl Hall and John Oates are bona-fide stars, and just so happen to be the biggest selling duo in US history. Tease your hair into a Flock of Seagulls-style quiff, spray on some acid wash denims and prepare to dance your asses off. 15 July at Dublin’s Olympia. We can go for that. olympia.ie LEE MILLER IN JAMES JOYCE’S DUBLIN American photographer Lee Miller has had a wide and varied career. Since starting out as a model in 1920s New York, she became a freelance photographer for Condé Nast before later moving to Paris and setting up her own practice. Once the Second World War broke out, she became one of only a handful of female war correspondents, and whilst working for Vogue captured images from the London Blitz, the liberation of Paris, and shocking stills from the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps. In 1946 Miller was commissioned by British Vogue to provide images for the article When James Joyce Lived in Dublin, travelling to Ireland to photograph places and people that offered some form of Joyce connection. These stunning and rare photographs will be exclusively displayed as part of a new exhibition entitled Lee Miller in James Joyce’s Dublin in the The James Joyce Centre from 9 June, offering unique insight into post-war Dublin and documenting the journey that Miller took. See Jamesjoyce.ie for more details. LONGITUDE Another great alternative for those who can’t stand the thought of camping, Dublin’s immensely popular Longitude festival returns to Marlay Park on 18 July with another stellar line-up packed over three days. One headliner not to be missed is legendary trip-hop outfit Massive Attack, who pride themselves on bringing their affecting live performances complete with whopper stage set-ups to the crowds. We guarantee that by the time they play Unfinished Sympathy you’ll be feeling the love en masse. Other acts billed include teen dance sensations Disclosure and the amazing James Vincent McMorrow. All of this, and not a baby wipe in sight. Thank heavens. Tickets from 59. 50. ticketmaster.ie HAPPENINGS CINEMA Keep an eye on Happenings.ie this summer for information about their Instant Open Air Cinema that gives movie fans 30 hours notice (these clever Happenings people keep a close eye on the weather so we don’t have to get wet bums) to grab blankets and snacks before heading down to Fitzwilliam Square for an exclusive screening under the stars, all for a fiver. ARCADE FIRE Incredibly it’s been ten years since the seminal Funeral was released by Montreal wonder-band Arcade Fire (where has that time gone?), and if you haven’t been lucky enough to catch one of their live shows in the last decade, now is your chance to see them as they bring their Reflektor tour to Dublin’s Marlay Park on 29 June. Renowned for their outstanding and rousing performances, Arcade Fire are quite simply superb. Throw into the mix a support slot from the indie stalwarts the Pixies and you’ve got yourself a gig made for memories. FORBIDDEN FRUITThe summer festival kick-starter Forbidden Fruit, beginning 31 May at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, has proved itself in past years to stand tall alongside the likes of four day event behemoths with its variety of home-spun and international acts. Plus it offers the perfect alternative for those wanting to savour the festi-experience without having to slog it out in a waterlogged Eurohike. There are free Bulmers buses that can bring you to and from the event plus the exemplary Flaming Lips are returning this year to headline the Saturday stage and for those not in the know, expect to see one of the greatest live experiences of your life. Frontman Wayne Coyne took to the Forbidden Fruit crowd in 2011 in a gigantic inflatable hamster-ball as a posse of (allegedly) grabbed audience members frolicked around the stage in The Wizard of Oz costumes. Great fun. Day tickets are from 59.50. forbiddenfruit.ie

PANTI BLISSFollowing THAT appearance on The Saturday Night Show, Panti Bliss has cemented herself as not only Dublin’s most exceptional and glamorous drag queen, but also as an intelligent and inspirational figurehead speaking out against Ireland’s longstanding and outdated issues surrounding gay rights. The impassioned and articulate speech that Panti went on to deliver at the Abbey Theatre in the wake of the RTÉ scandal in turn went viral, garnering her support and admiration on an international level. Apparently, there was even an email from Madonna raining praise. Don’t miss the chance then to see Panti’s one woman show High Heels in Low Places at Vicar Street on 13 July. Tickets from

STREET FEASTMake like Ramsay Street this 15 June and get involved with the 2014 Street Feast, an event that encourages people to throw a lovely lunch in any open space and invite along the neighbours (see what we did there?). The concept is easy; bring food, bring people and have some fun. Whether it’s a simple

SUMMER SOUNDS:

ELECTRO-FUNKSTERS... Chromeo return this summer

with new album White Women. The Canadian

electro funk duo’s follow up to 2010’s Business Casual is their fourth album and

features an enviable roll-call of collaborators including Vampire Weekend’s Ezra

Koenig, Solange, and LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney. Get ready to bust out some fancy footwork when the

album launches.

R&B’S... first lady of cool Kelis is not only a musical genius, she also happens to be a very

passionate and accomplished chef. She has her own cooking

show and even ran her own fry van at this year’s SXSW

festival in Texas. No surprise then that her new album Food

is a celebration of all things culinary, with tracks such as Jerk Ribs and Fish Fry. We’re expecting some phat beats

from the R&B queen too.

NOT STRICTLY... a summer release but

an important one all the same, the new album Singles from Maryland synth-popsters Future Islands released earlier in the year is probably

going to be topping many muso’s playlists. If you didn’t catch the band’s

incendiary performance on Letterman then hit

Google now – it’s nothing short of remarkable.

From performing with the likes of Antony and the Johnsons, to penning a song for the The Hunger Games film (working with the incredible T Bone Burnett), Birdy is already proving herself to be a musical force to be reckoned with.
