message fromThe PRINCIPAL

Congratulations to all involved in preparing for this exciting tour of the UK, France and Belgium. It will be a trip of a lifetime.

It is the culmination of so much proactive work in fundraising and coordinating, demonstrating what can be done when we share high expectations. The organising team are to be congratulated for their efficiency and dedication in bringing the tour to fruition.

Thank you to Student Horizons for your input and expertise.

For our young men this is more than just a rugby tour. Of course, the rugby is important and we trust you will enjoy the experience of playing overseas. However, you are also ambassadors for Wairoa and as such; you represent your school and community as well as yourselves.

The impression you create as polite and respectful young men will do much for our community and its reputation.

I again congratulate the organisers and the whanau who have made this possible.

Thank you to all who have supported it financially.

Best wishes for a great sporting and educational experience.

B.J Simpson Principal Wairoa College

thanK YOU: There are so many people, organisations and Trusts to thank for making this trip possible and we will endeavour to do that personally when we return home. But the families of these boys need to be applauded for their courage and determination to help us make this happen, without them it would not have happened. We have been told that this trip was an ambitious one, and yes that’s right. We have succeeded in making this trip a reality and the students will never forget this trip and the knowledge that they can reach and achieve anything they want, just takes hard work.

former student: “PRoUD”

First reactions to hearing the news of Wairoa College sending a rugby team on a UK Tour could easily be that it is over ambitious and a bridge too far. For me it can be summed up in one word; proud.

As a past wearer of the jersey I would like to congratulate the management, coaches, staff, family and community on making this opportunity happen.

From a rugby point of view, this will be a huge challenge but an exciting one. The joys of touring as a group, training, playing and recovering in a short turnaround will give this team a small taste of life as a fulltime rugby player. I hope this experience provides the motivation for some individuals to focus their energy and put the hard yards in on the training fields to ensure this is not their last overseas rugby tour. It takes dedication, sacrifice and commitment to turn your passion, whatever that is, into your career. To the young men of the tour, you have an opportunity here, take it.

The journey these young men are to take through this tour will provide them with real life experiences and challenges that will open their eyes to the big world. They will see the opportunities available to them should they want it, and also should they be willing to do what it takes to grasp it.

Speaking from experience, rugby can provide you with international travel opportunities, friends worldwide and a career that can be very fulfilling. To have a taste of this at a young age is very fortunate and a gift. It is a long way from Lucknow Street to the Eiffel Tower and the streets of London. This will be a life experience like no other they have had before and it will shape young men of the community.

From a past player to current players - Enjoy this opportunity and make the most of it. Represent yourselves with respect

and integrity and make every past wearer of the jersey, your whanau and your community proud.

MOst LOOKing fORwaRD tO On tOUR: Watching our boys experience the different cultures that we will encounter, and the realisation that we live in a beautiful part of the world (WAIROA) and that what we have, shouldn’t be taken for granted. To see the development of our Rangitahi as another stage in their lives is reached. For our boys to recognise the ultimate sacrifice that our forefathers gave when they travelled from our homeland to foreign shores in protection of our future way of life.

wORDs Of wisDOM: Life is what you make of it, the world owes us nothing, if you do nothing with your life / time on this planet then expect to get exactly the same back. Live life to the fullest.

thanK YOU: Firstly Every single person who has taken the time to awhi our boys in this journey, the parents who have taken the time to help out with any and everything during the year. The Downes family for their unwavering support. The parents that hop on the bus for our journeys down to the bay, our bus driver Mary-Anne for keeping it real.

Secondly the support team Yuanita, Wayne, Amber and Jay for all the hard yards that goes on behind the scenes. Our principal for being there for our team, our bay supporters who have been there to watch this team progress over the years (and who introduced lollies at half time), and our boys who have been working hard to make this happen. But this could not have happened without Staffie Eaglesome, she who has pushed, prodded, threatened and got the goods out of this team of boys and parents, worked tirelessly for nothing more than seeing Wairoa College rugby academy get to its goal. And in doing this realised a dream which I hope our boys recognise and represent. KIA MATAARA.

thanK YOU: Firstly our 2 sons, Cullen and Wyatt, and our whanau – my Nana, our parents and siblings who have endlessly supported us not only with contributions but their time and love leading up to and during this Tour. The Ferry Hotel and Tapuae Sports Club. remembering The FALLeN

One of the highlights of the Wairoa college rugby tour will be visiting the WWI battlefields of Belgium.

One can’t visit Flanders without being deeply moved by the tragedy. The statistics are horrendous. In four years of fighting in this cramped corner of the Western Front, one million men on both sides were killed or wounded or went missing.

On the 12th of October 1917, 846 young New Zealanders were killed in the first four hours of the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium. By the end of the day the total number of casualties, the wounded, the dead and the missing was 2,700. It took two and a half days to clear the battlefield of the dead and injured.

Thirty five men fell for every square yard taken. The dead comprised mostly British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and South African troops. And the battle was all for nothing.

Today, the scene around Ypres and Passchendaele is very different. The desolate battlefield landscape has long since gone. Nothing we see now is older than 90 years – no farm building, no fence, no tree.

It is hauntingly peaceful. Ordinary farmland, in fact. We look at fields of head-high corn and lush green pastures where cows graze contentedly.

Beneath these pastures still lie tens of thousands – even hundreds of thousands, it has been estimated – of young men cut down in the bloodiest of bloody wars and most of whose bodies have never been recovered.
