The last two weeks have been filled with special occasions. Sadly we farewelled long serving staff members Robert Hamblyn and Peggy Andrews. Between them they have served Wairoa College for over 60 years. We also farewelled Pania Grey and Tim Gledhill. Mrs Barbara Keil left us in Term 3. I thank them for their contribution to Wairoa College and their dedication to our students. I wish them well for their future.
I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Karen Hayward, the ball committee and staff and parent helpers for making the ball such a magnificent occasion for our Year 12 and 13 students last week. The students looked fabulous and it was lovely to see them all enjoying themselves.
Our Senior Prizegiving was a celebration of all the hard work students and teachers have put in this year. It was also a time to reflect on our 2019 results.
2019 saw the highest results Wairoa College has had in more than 10 years for NCEA Level 1, NCEA Level 2, Māori, Numeracy, Literacy, Male and Female achievement rates.
These results were also ALL higher than the National Achievement rates. Our school has made accelerated progress in academic achievement.
I would like to thank Melissa Stanaway who volunteered to take the photos of our prizewinners at the conclusion of this ceremony. It was very appreciated.
We have also been fortunate in the latest tranche to become a Free and Healthy Lunches school. A committee was formed, applications read and potential providers interviewed. We are partnering with a company called Libelle who have hired locals and will make the food onsite for our students. This will start Monday next week. This is a very exciting opportunity for us, as well fed students learn better.
I would like to acknowledge the massive support that we get from the First Light Foundation. This year we have received funding for computers, transport costs, tracksuits for our sports teams for next year, our new sign and over the holidays the courtyard in front of the canteen will have new shade sails.
The Wairoa Young Achievers Trust has supported funding to allow the Hawke’s Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust to come and run an Aspiring Leaders programme primarily with Year 7 and 8 students. They have activities on-site at the college and also in Hastings at the sports park. This programme runs all year.
We expanded our 2020 prefect group to reflect the outstanding contribution Year 13 students have made to our school. New roles were developed that supported our goals. Developing leadership throughout the school has been a focus. SVA The student volunteer army was set up by Sam Johnson after the Christchurch earthquake in 2011. Our school leaders at all year levels become members of the student volunteer army. It is possible to receive a number of badges, depending on hours of service. Examples of this have been helping out at parent evenings, picking up rubbish at a river clean up, assemblies and the school ball, volunteering at the rest home, helping a neighbour or someone in the community or whanau. Giving back to our community is good for everyone, when you help others it improves your well being and makes you feel valued and kind and caring. It sits with our school value of Manaakitanga caring for others.
To the year 13’s, as you leave us remember the wise words of your teachers. Work hard and make good choices. Whilst not all of you were recognised formally at prize giving, I know that you have all progressed so very much. I am proud of each and every one of you. Try to remember that, as you face big changes, you are not alone. There are good things waiting for you just around the corner. So step out with confidence and take new opportunities in your stride. I wish you well for your journey.
On a final note, I would like to wish our seniors well with their final examinations.

It has been a few weeks since returning home from Hamilton where Kaylah competed at the NZ Secondary Swim champs and what an amazing few days it had been.Kaylah and myself wore the school emblem with pride, Kaylah done extremely well in a the pool of fierce athletes where some NZ records were broken. Kaylah set goals to achieve for herself in this competition as it is the biggest meet to date. Her goals were to cut her times down, which she did in 7 out of 8 events, the biggest being 7 seconds off her 200 freestyle. This event was streamed through Sky Sport so alot of whanau, friends, followers and supported tuned in to watch her on screen, she won a couple of heats 200 free and 50 fly where they zoomed in on her as she swam and got a close up as she finished. Kaylah has some very big goals for 2021 and she is very close to qualifying at more top national events. Here is something that she quoted to me as we sat on the stand " you dont have to medal to be a winner or a champ, achieving my personal goals makes me a winner in myself"

MUSIC PRODUCTION
Before Karma Gets UsAs part of the annual Hawkes Bay Arts Festival, on Tuesday 20th October many of our students were treated to a live theatrical performance ‘Before Karma Gets Us’, created by Auckland based actors. Tess Sullian, Ariaana Osborne and Olivia Parker, alongside director Patrick Carroll, kept us on the edge of our seats while we watched them make absolute fools of themselves on stage!
The show mashed together old stage magic and sketch comedy, and it was an enthrilling, fast paced and raucous performance which students (and teachers) enjoyed. This show was kindly sponsored by a donor to the HBAF, which allowed our students to watch this incredible show free of charge. Many thanks to the wider arts community for making this happen!
Comments from staff and students who watched the show:“In the 25 years I have worked at this college, this show is up there with one of the best we’ve had visit! It was energetic, and it kept our students engaged the whole way through”– Mr Hamblyn.“I thought it was entertaining because it was so active and energetic” – Mikaela Foley-Hollis (Year 9) “It was loud, but it was majestical and mysterious” Samantha Botica. (Year 11)“It was a fun and enjoyable show to watch, I really enjoyed it”. – Lishae Peipi (Year 11) “It was unique and different, but definitely amusing!” – James Vennell (Year 9)
DONATED MUSICAL EQUIPMENTKind Wairoa local, Nathan Hart recently donated a bass guitar and amplifier to the college. This will be used in the music suite by our music students, towards their solo and group performance assessments. Thank you so much Nathan, the students are very appreciative of the donation!
