Pearson Trust Working Group Exhibition in Gressingham Church – open until 5 October

The plans on display in Gressingham church until 5 October show three options for the reordering of the church as a new community space for Gressingham and Eskrigge.

This round of consultations is designedto help decide which of the three is the preferred option, in advance of the final decision on whether or not to go ahead.

Two of the three designs are brought forward from last year. One involves inserting a large mezzanine floor, while the other involves clearing as much of the existing floor space as possible.

There is also a third plan, which has a smaller mezzanine or ‘west gallery’, incorporating some of the most useful aspects of the two earlier plans. The space underneath the gallery can be screened off to create a meeting room, or a separate entrance or refreshments area, or alternatively opened out, to open up the whole floor space, as required, event by event.

If you have not already visited, please do take the opportunity in the remaining week. Gressingham and Eskrigge residents are invited to submit their comments on the forms at the back of church, and leave them in the collection

box. Alternatively you can address comments and enquiries to the chair of the Working Group, Jane Paxman – [email protected] / 07785 345380.

Just one of the three plans will ‘go through to the next round’ – which will be a local referendum in Gressingham and Eskrigge on whether or not to go ahead with the project. This will be run by the local council exactly like a local election, complete with ballot cards to every home, an official voting day in the Old School Room, a council Returning Officer, and even the option of postal voting, to guarantee that the whole village has the opportunity to take part.

Even with a vote in favour of going ahead with the project, the Working Group will still have to set about securing the rest of the funding and the various necessary permissions – but this can only be attempted once the village has made it clear that it wishes to go ahead with the project.

The working group appreciates the large number of people who attended last year’s event, and the amount of time they spent going through all the materials, and hopes that this event proves to be equally valuable.

Remembrance Sunday11 November 2018Remembrance Sunday this year will be a major event nationally and internationally, being the centenary of the First World War Armistice.

Services will start at 10.30am in Whittington, Arkholme and Gressingham, concluding with the 11am silence. (The service in Hornby begins at the war memorial at 10.55am.)

All four churches will have special Armistice Centenary displays, including photographs, war records and biographies for all those named on their First World War memorials, and a special display in Arkholme, which is one of only 52 villages in England and Wales where everyone who served in the Great War returned.

All four churches will be open during the afternoon from 2pm to 4pm, so that people have the opportunity to visit all four displays on this special Remembrance Sunday.

We are also inviting everyone to bring along their own items to add to the Armistice Centenary displays. Many families have items passed down from the Great War. Please do bring them along to the morning services to add to the exhibitions. To keep them safe, all the churches will be locked once everyone has left morning service, and supervised during the afternoon opening (2pm to 4pm) – then locked again afterwards. (It would be helpful if you could label your items, and collect them at 4pm.)

We look forward to a very special Armistice Centenary day across the four parishes.

Whittington is also planning a beacon-lighting on the Sunday evening – more details next month.

And finally… a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who came to help pull balsam on the fouroccasions that we ventured out this spring and summer on the Great Gressingham Balsam Bash. It was a fun and very rewarding experience knowing that we have startedto halt the spread of this invasive plant through the village. A big thank you also goes out to all the land owners who have allowed us to access their land, and to those who have sprayed the plant on their land, adding a considerable contribution to our efforts. So far we cleared Balsam from the main stream through the village, all the way from the source of the stream down to Mill Bridge. We have tackled plants along the smaller beck that flows from High Dam Barn down into the village, as well as the yard next to Hill Side / Beck Side Houses. We have also pulled plants from the hedgerow behind Box Tree Farm, which with the help of some spraying on the other side of the hedge should have slowed the spread. The hedgerows along Sandbeds Lane are also clear of balsam this year, although some still remains in the fields along the eastern side of the lane and at the far end around the campsite/fishing compound, which will hopefully bea target for next year. The balsam within the compound on Rabbit Lane has also been reduced in its extent this year. With your help next year, hopefully we will check and re-pull the areas we have already covered and start to remove the plant from the woodland downstream from Mill Bridge, from the woodland at High Dam Barn, as well as pull more plants along Sandbeds Lane. I hope you will join us again next year when we have another go and build on our achievements from this year and we will really begin to see the positive benefits of our efforts. Thank you! Alice Helyar

Parish Councils (continued)Gressingham Parish Council met on 21 May, 9 July and 10 September, and discussed ongoing amenity and road safety issues, in particular: measures to prevent further traffic damage to Loyn Bridge; the still unrepaired damaged fences on the Gressinghamside of Loyn Bridge; concerns about the volume and speed of traffic travelling through Gressingham; rural crime and how information can be received from, and supplied to, the police; latest information on the plans for the potential conversion of Gressingham church into social/community space; a project to harness 'green' energy from Gressingham Beck to heat the church; and the successful bid for a defibrillator to be supplied by Lancashire Lifesavers. In addition, the Annual Parish Meeting was held on 20 May, at which the constitution of the Old School Room was discussed, together withproposed revisions to the way in which its Trustees are appointed, in order to clarify responsibilities and obligations and terms of office.

Whittington Parish Council met on 16 July. Lisa Vines, City Council Elections Officer, attended, to discuss the procedure for local council elections in May 2019. The new defibrillator was in position on the outside wall of the village hall, registered with the British Heart Foundation and the North West Ambulance Service. It will be checked daily and reported online weekly by a volunteer parishioner. Training will commence inSeptember. The 999 service will advise how to access and use the equipment if they judge that it is required. Councillors also discussed traffic management, the condition of various roads, and the development of a Parish Plan. Next meeting Monday 19 November 7pm preceded by an open parishioners meeting at 6.45pm, Whittington Village Hall.

Gerald writes...Anne and Rob Pettifor and their daughter Sarah have recently moved to Kirkby Lonsdale. They will be sadly missed as they have contributed so much to village life during their time at Cross House. Anne served as treasurer of the Heritage Society and helped raise the money needed to clean and restore the Royal Coat of Arms now displayed in the Church, and both Rob and Anne were part of the bell-ringing team thatorganised the removal and overhaul and re-hanging of the Church Bells. They have left the village a better place and we hope they enjoy their new home and are as happy there as they were at Whittington.

We knew Vera Hoggarth as a quiet family-loving mum and grandmother, but few of us knew that during the war she was a member of the WAAFs, serving most of the war on an airbase in Northern Ireland, from which aircraft constantly patrolled the North Atlantic searching for enemy U-boats and shipwrecked sailors. After the war she met and married her husband Gerry, and lived at Brookhouse for a time. In 1958 they moved to Providence House at Arkholme and farmed there until their retirement. Sadly she started suffering from dementia and has spent the last few years in a care home regularly visited by her ever-loving family.

If you have a few minutes to spare and enjoy nice scenery take a look at the short video on the Whittington Village Blog called The Bus Trip To Mallham. It highlights all the spectacular views from Morecambe to Mallham. It was made by one of the bus drivers and is very well done, well worth a look [vimeo.com/282226699].

The next dance at Whittington is on 6 October when Denis Westmorland is back providing the music for dancing, it will be another enjoyable night.

Peace is our themeOver the next few months in the four parishes we are taking Peace asour theme – from Peace Within to Peace with the Universe – and in thiscentenary year of the Armistice, Peace between Peoples and Nations.

Three key themes help define what we mean by Peace:

Harmony not hostility...in relationships between individuals – and in relationships betweencommunities, peoples and nations. Tolerance is half way there, but the

goal for true peace is not tolerance but harmony.

Order not chaos...in our inner lives, in our homes, and in the wider world – though to find

inner peace amidst the chaos, we often need the prayer of serenity:God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

A sense of contentment or completeness...a sense that there is, and always will be, enough, that everything that matters is in

place, that nothing more is required – think “the Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing Ishall want” (23rd Psalm), or “give us this day our daily bread” (and that is enough – theLord’s Prayer), or “all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall

be well” (fifteenth century English mystic Dame Julian of Norwich) – all with a profoundtrust in the goodness of God, and ultimately in the goodness of all that God has made.

We are planning a Peace and Wellbeing Fair for a Saturday in the new year, butbefore that, we have a Peace and Justice Week planned for this November. On the globalscale, many have observed that without justice, there will never be peace. And this isn’t a

justice of punishment or revenge (‘an eye for an eye’ leaves the whole world blind) –this is God’s ‘justice for the poor and oppressed’, a justice of putting things right and

starting over, without retribution or revenge.

The UN’s current global goals include (at number 16) “Peace,Justice, and strong institutions” – in other words, the rule of just laws

in every place, not just in theory, but exercised in practice as well.It is a worthy goal to work towards, and we should indeed work

towards it in every place. But in the mean time, we also ‘pick up thepieces’ in the midst of the chaos. These are the two dimensions of thechurch’s work for Peace and Justice: campaign for what is right, andin the mean time, tend the wounded. It isn’t either-or, it’s both-and.

That’s the foundation of our Peace and Justice Week in November –five evenings on five absolutely current themes, local, national, andinternational, all of them directly impacting people right here in the

Lune Valley. It deliberately leads into the Armistice Centenary and theseventieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Do join us for a week that promises to be both informative andinspiring. More than a dozen speakers are already booked, and you

can follow the latest programme details at www.these4parishes.co.uk

In the mean time, join us any Sunday, and see what else is going on in theweekly bulletin, at church or at www.these4parishes.co.uk (updated weekly)

The weather in ArkholmeRobin McIlveen

August Weather in Arkholme17 Slightly Wet Days (less than 5mm) together adding up to 27.0mm 4 Decidedly Wet Days (from 5mm to just under 25mm) adding up to a further 49.0mm 1 Extremely Wet Day (from 5mm to just under 25mm) adding a further 26.3mm22 Rain Days altogether adding up to 102.3mm (4 inches) – leaving 9 dry daysWettest Day 15th-16th with 26.3mm

Nature’s taps turned on at last in the second week of August, with the total for the month exceeding that for May, June and July combined. August’s third week alone matched the whole of July, and included the first Extremely Wet Day of 2018 whose 26.3mm nearly matched the whole of May. You can see the spikiness of daily totals clearly in the above summary. That one EWD deposited very nearly as much as the 17 Slightly Wet Days, which together delivered only half the total for the four Decidedly Wet Days. Even so the monthly total was only a little larger than the notional average of 90mm, and the accumulated deficit is still showing strongly in the predicted low totalfor 2018’s total rainfall (see below).

September has continued wet, totalling 80mm by the 19th and containing a really bigExtremely Wet Day (31.7mm or 1.8 inches) in the 24 hours ending at 9am on Tuesday 11 September. Coming after many wet days, this heavy fall flooded the Lune very quickly.

The few hours of suddenly cloudy, balmy air (19°C) on the morning of Tuesday 18 September were the debris of a hurricane in the tropical North Atlantic some days earlier, and several of these fierce storms (called Typhoons or Cyclones in other sea areas) have been much in the news recently. Although their winds are dangerously strong (hurling heavy debris about at up to 100mph), they are often much less lethal than the torrential rains which always accompany them. Recent news reports mentioned rainfalls of several hundred mm (a foot or more) in a day – a quarter or more of our annual totals. The slow travel of Hurricane Florence produced especially serious flooding because the torrential rains persisted for days rather than hours in many places. In the Philippines, torrential rains in Typhoon Mangkhut produced lethal landslides, as can happen in hilly terrain. The huge circling air-flows drove storm surges (extra tides) at some coasts, but fortunately nothing to compare with the 5 metre storm surge which drowned 250,000 people in four hours in the Ganges delta on 12 November 1970. We get powerful storms, which occasionally reach Hurricane Force(Force 12 on the Beaufort Scale, or 55mph at standing head height). However these are the bare minimum sustained winds in category 1 Tropical Hurricanes (Typhoons or Cyclones). Category 5 Hurricanes have sustained wind speeds of at least 110mph at head height. Be thankful for our cool northern oceans.

By the end of August July, there have been 96 dry days in the 243 days of 2018, 114 Slightly Wet Days giving 165mm of rain, 31 Decidedly Wet Days giving 330mm, and oneExtremely Wet Day giving 26mm, ie 146 Rain Days giving 521mm of rain (20.5 inches). Continued at this rate, the full year’s rainfall would be 782mm, compared with a typical 1,200mm.
