SIGNING OF MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT
On 2 March 2017, Pn Hjh Sariani, Acting Director
DBP Brunei received a courtesy call from Ms. Blesila
P. Velasco, INELI ASEAN Project Director and
members of the Project Team. This was followed by
a meeting to finalise the arrangements for the
upcoming Midway Meeting. The meeting concluded
with an MOA Signing Ceremony . Signing on behalf of DBP Brunei was Pn Hjh Sariani, for Brunei
Draussalam Library Association was Pn Nellie and for the National Library of the Philippines was Ms
Blesila.
The INELI-ASEAN Project team later visited the Main Library and Lambak Kanan Community Library before
meeting with Pn Nellie Sunny BLA President as Sponsor and Brunei Innovators, to discuss their work

INELI- ASEAN MIDWAY MEETING IN BRUNEI
Brunei Darussalam Library Association and DBP Brunei are honoured to co-host the upcoming Meeting on 22-24 May 2017 in Brunei Darussalam. The International Network of Emerging Library Innovators –Association of Southeast Asian Nations (INELI-ASEAN) is a 3 year project with funding support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). INELI-ASEAN Team is led by the National Library of Philippines has decided to conduct midway meetings to address such concerns, and to further foster collaboration and strong partnerships among the innovators. It aims to build capacity and enhance leadership skills of emerging library leaders and create a vibrant network of public libraries to foster collaboration and strong partnership among them and other relevant stakeholders in the region. The recently concluded INELI-ASEAN 2nd Convening in Singapore last September 2016 This time they have chosen Brunei Darussalam as the site for the May meeting and have appointed the Brunei Darussalam Library Association and the DBP Brunei as co-hosts. It will be participated by 17 participants from 10 ASEAN member states and 7 staff. The Midway Meeting is aimed to fulfill the following objectives:
Augment the learnings gained from the online learning modules and create opportunities for personal reflection amid issues and crises;
Discuss aspects of the INELI-ASEAN program that they wanted more information on;
Talk about the innovations/activities they are implementing in their own libraries, along with its successes and learnings, and how the INELI-ASEAN program had supported them in doing so; and,
Follow-up activities from the Singapore Convening (i.e. collaborative projects, online learning module participation, etc.) and address concerns

TALK ON “GET YOURSELF CONNECTED: CAREER AS A LIBRARIAN”
Thursday 2 March 2017 at Library, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College, Brunei Muara District
Dy Amal Syukriyyah Hj Abd Kahar and Aw Mohd Hafizuddin Abu Hasrah presented the talk to librarians
from Primary and Secondary schools KSS2 and IBTE institutions from Brunei Muara District. Also present
was Cg Hamilton from the Schools Resource Unit. Schools Department. BLA wishes to thank the librarians
for coming and to the Principal SOASC for the use its Library for the event.

LIBRARY STUDENTS VISIT UTB LIBRARY By Norliha Din, Programme Instructor, School of ICT, IBTE SSR Campus
A total of 21 students from School of ICT, Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus visited the Universiti Teknologi Brunei Library on
1 March 2017. The group who are currently taking HNTEC in Information and Library Studies was led by one of the
programme instructor, Norliha Binti Mohd Din
with the aim to gain in depth of knowledge from
the higher institution that specializes on
engineering, business, technology and
computing
The visitors were welcomed by the Library
Officer, Awang Osman Hj Suhaile and the
Assistant Library Officer Grade 1, Hj Abdul
Hapidz bin Haji Ali Hassan instigated with a
briefing about the library background and
development. UTB Library was established since
1986 based in Jalan Tungku as an academic
library holding over 30,000 items in various
formats provide information services mainly for
students and researchers.
The visit included a library tour through all levels
of the information centre including the general
collection, archive collection, Bruneiana,
journals and magazine as well receiving
explanation on the functions for its well demand
services such as the circulation service, E-
resources, syndicate rooms up to online public access
catalogue (OPAC).
To end the valuable experience prior to the group photo,
the students were treated with teatime refreshments at the
‘360 Library Café’- a unique addition located inside the
ground level of the library that was officially opened in
conjunction of the institution’s first UTB convo festival back
in 2014.

PROGRAM KHIDMAT BAKTI NEGARA
Brunei National Service Programme (PKBN) is a national youth development programme which was
launched on 5 December 2011 with the first of three pilot programmes. Its motto is BERSEDIA
BERKHIDMAT BERBAKTI. In 2014, PKBN make its history by the establishment of a full and permanent
national service programme.
PKBN”s main objectives are to develop and enhance the spirit of patriotism, commitment and
resilience in youths, to enhance the spirit of solidarity and unity, to develop positive characteristics
among younger generation through good values, to instill a spirit of caring and volunteerism, to
produce healthy, confident, responsible and virtuous youths and to produce excellent Bruneian youths in line with the Goals of
National Youth Policy.
The PKBN's 3 months training for citizens or permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam is open to men and women aged 16-21
years old, not schooling or have a job during the course of the training and pass the health test. Training is in the form of
discipline, nationality, spirituality, entrepreneurship, community and understanding the concept of Malay Islamic Monarchy.
The PKBN training camp building in Batu Apoi, was officially handed over on the 24 November 2016.

EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO TEMBURONG DISTRICT By Era Suryani bt Abdullah, DiICT LIC02, ICT, Politeknik Brunei
On Saturday, 29 October 2016, Politeknik Brunei organised an educational trip to Temburong district. The trip consisted of 3 lecturers in charge and 13 students from Level 5 Diploma in Information and Communication Technology that taking course Library Informatics and Computing. The objectives of this educational trip were to improve students’ knowledge in the related area, strengthen the relationship between students, lecturers and staff and lastly to enhance students self-confidence. In this trip the students visited the
Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei, Temburong District Library and a resource room that was available at a long house. From this trip, the students were able to know in detail about how the librarian handled the library such as how they promoted the library, how they organized activities to attract the users, the collection in the library, the library services and more. There is one interesting privilege that has been provided to the users, especially to
the pregnant mothers, is the early literacy pack for unborn babies so that the mothers will have experience in guiding and teaching their children reading and a love for books from an early age. In conclusion, this educational trip was a good experience for the students as they learnt a lot from the visits.

graduate and Dy . Jariah Binti Haji Maidin.
Services and reading promotion:
Besides putting up various library displays to attract
students into using the library, the English Reading
Club also uses the library on every Wednesday for
students wanting to read English books. As the library
can accommodate 24 students at any one time, the
library allows other students to check out books and
newspapers from the library for the reading period
held each morning before class begins.
