FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 21, 2021

At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit

into the desert to be tempted by the

devil. He fasted for forty days and

forty nights, and afterwards he was

hungry.

Welcome to LENT! As Jesus

prayed and fasted in the wilderness for forty days and

forty nights in preparation for his public ministry, so

too we prepare for the glory of Easter by a period of

prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Please pay attention to

the bulletin over the coming weeks for information on

the many Lenten programs and events, fish fries,

Stations of the Cross, and reconciliation opportunities that will be offered. You can also stop by and pick up

a Lenten Brochure or view it at elcatholics.org/lent.

May this season of penance help us to draw ever

closer to Jesus!

On Saturday, February 13, three RCIA candidates

celebrated the Rite of Welcome. This Rite symbolizes

their decision to move forward on their journey as a

candidate (previously baptized). Through this

ritual they were formally introduced to the faith

community, welcomed in a specific way, and presented

with the crucifix which is the primary symbol of the

Christian faith and signifies their commitment to

follow the way of Christ. As a community we

welcome you into our midst and promise to help you

to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

Pictured left to right in the front row are candidates Susan

Gisholt, Elizabeth Gisholt, and Natalie Rose. Back row left to

right are Fr. Matthew, RCIA sponsors Karen Currie, Angela

Sprecher, and Barbara Lawrence, and Fr. Gordon.

May God bless us with a grace-filled Lent!

Fr. Gordon

If we aren’t working to move

closer to God each day, we are

drifting away. May Lent be a

time to increase our efforts

towards holiness!

Tribute to Fr. Jake Foglio

A photo tribute to Fr. Jake has been hung in the lobby

at St. John right outside the main doors to the

sanctuary. These images celebrate his over 50 years

of priesthood and service to St. John and the Michigan State Community. Donated by MSU and St. John

alum, Mark Murray, may this memorial remind

everyone of the importance of living out our faith.

We are so grateful to Fr. Jake and his Catholic

Spartans Legacy Endowment Fund which ensures the

St. John will be here to enlighten and inspire future

generations of Catholic Spartans.

Just in time for Lent

For Ash Wednesday, we made a

small change to the sanctuary at St. Thomas returning

the original tabernacle behind the alter and updating

the banners on either side. This is the original parish

tabernacle that was used in the school gym even

before the church was constructed. It has served as a

backup tabernacle in the St. Joseph sacristy for

years. We sent it out for polishing and restoration

and it came back shiny as new. So we switched

tabernacles by placing the restored tabernacle in the

sanctuary and moved the former tabernacle to the

St. Joseph sacristy to use as a backup and for our Holy

Thursday tabernacle of repose.

We hope this change will help you to better focus on

our Eucharistic Lord present among us.

This Sunday at the

12:00 noon Mass at St.

John Church 7

catechumens and 6

candidates celebrated

the Rite of Sending. The parish community

acknowledged that these people are beginning the final

period of their preparation for entry into the Catholic

Church at the Easter Vigil. The catechumens put their

names in the parish's Book of the Elect and the

candidates put their names in the Book of

Candidates. The prayers of the parish accompanied

them as they went to St. Thomas Aquinas later that

day for the Rite of Election for the catechumens and

the Call to Continuing Conversion for the candidates. Together with the catechumens and

candidates from 25 other parishes in this area, they

were called forward by name, greeted individually by

Bishop Boyea, and strengthened by the prayers of the

diocesan community.

This Sunday the inquirers learned about prayer, the

acronym ACTS used to describe four forms of prayer:

Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication

(asking), and the two basic forms of prayer, public

prayers of the Church at Mass and private

prayer. Those present described different ways they

pray and the various occasions they pray. Prayer can

be with formal memorized words or be a

conversation with God. Some use passages from the

bible as a focal point and sometimes prayer has no

words and is simply enjoying being in the presence of

God. It is good to develop a personal pattern for

prayer. This can be at any time or in any place, some

say they have made their car their personal prayer

space. Wherever it is, listen to God during prayer to

know what he wants us to hear and to learn where he

is leading us.

This past Ash Wednesday a display of pictures of the

catechumens and candidates was put at the back of

church at St. Thomas Aquinas and St. John. Every

parishioner is invited to take the name of one of these

people and pray for them each day this Lent. The

prayers of our parish faith community will

support these people as they travel the last 6 weeks toward the Easter Vigil.

If you have any questions about the Rite of Christian

Initiation of Adults, or would like to discuss the

possibility of joining the next group of inquirers, call

Pete Ries at 517-351-5460, or email him

at [email protected].

Legacy Planning

Incorporating charitable giving into your estate plans

can sound complex at first, but philanthropic planning

can be as simple as including a bequest to St. Thomas

Aquinas Parish/St. John Church & Student Center in

your will or living trust. You may leave a percentage

share of your estate, specify a dollar amount, or

designate St. Thomas Aquinas Parish/St. John Church

& Student Center as a contingent beneficiary.

But this type of planning also can encompass much

more than a simple bequest. With the goals of

providing for your loved ones, reducing taxes and

remembering worthy causes, there are a variety of

techniques available that have mutual benefit to you,

your community and STA/SJ, both now and into the

future. To learn more, please contact Director of

Advancement, Joshua Ginepro: 517-351-7215 or

[email protected]
