HEATING, COOLING, DRYING

energy-efficient heating of process linesNvent Raychem heating monitoring systems keep critical process lines running by monitoring energy consumption while protecting piping and equipment from freezing and overheating.

Resource-saving maintenance of shell-and-tube heat exchangersWith a drilling cleaning system for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, deposits in tubes can be removed safely for staff without the formation of aerosols or contamination of the immediate surroundings. The use of hazardous chemicals, such as hydrofluoric acid in a graphite tube evaporator, is also unnecessary.

PLANT ENGINEERING

1 Price trends for chemical plantsIncreasing demand in plant engineering: recently, the price index for chemical plants calculated by CHEMIE TECHNIK has risen more sharply than it has for years. We will be publishing current figures on price trends for plant equipment and manpower in CT in February 2019.

Changes in plant engineering – consequences for employeesDigitisation, modularisation – everywhere there is talk of major changes that companies are facing. What does this mean for individual employees?

modular plants – opportunities for speciality chemicals and plant engineering Modular plant engineering is actually nothing new for the engineering industry. But with module automation (MTP), the subject is taking on a new dimension. At the Engineering Summit interesting approaches were presented, and it was made clear that modularisation not only helps save money but can also change business models.

new business models in plant engineeringFew doubt that plant engineering is currently undergoing change – not just digital change. However, there is no consensus as to how this can be used to earn cash in the future. A number of ideas were discussed at the Engineering Summit 2018: from value-added contract design to new operating and service features to companies’ own products in the field of OT safety.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

energy-efficient exhaust gas purification at bitterfeld Chemical ParkNumerous fans are used for exhaust gas purification of the thermal residual waste treatment at Bitterfeld Wolfen Chemistry Park. These are controlled by frequency converters to optimise their energy consumption.

2 Compressed air heat power plants at Düren industrial ParkThe operator of Düren Industrial Park wished to increase energy efficiency at the site through various measures. One aim was to generate more steam through combined heat and power generation, thus optimising the park’s own electricity supply. To this end, the operator among other things replaced a compressed air compressor by two compressed air heat and power plants from Bosch.

Surge valve with electric driveFor the first time at Festo, an electric instead of a pneumatic drive can handle the control of a surge valve. This shortens response times, ensuring a more precise control and also saving compressed air.

MATERIALS, COATINGS

Fibre-reinforced ceramic reinforcements for pipeline constructionFibre-reinforced ceramic reinforcements can counteract creep deformations of metallic line pipes. They thus enable the operating time of the pipes to be significantly extended and the line pressure and media temperature in the process to be further increased.

ion exchangers for brine preparation in chlor-alkali electrolysisResins of the Lanxess Lewatit MDS series effectively help pre-vent damage to the latest generation of increasingly sensitive ion exchange membranes used for electrolysis, extending their life and reducing the energy costs of the process.

PUMPS, DOSING TECHNOLOGY

energy-efficient pumps – status quo and outlookAs large-scale consumers of electrical energy in process en-gineering processes, pumps are the focus of attention in the search for energy-saving possibilities. In our trend report, we pre-sent the current status, take a look into the future and describe current pump developments with regard to energy efficiency.

3 Pumping of chemical waste water with smartly controlled submersible pumpsChemical waste water poses high demands on the material used. Corrosion and changing process conditions are a problem for the pumps. In addition, the need for networking and smart control is increasing.

Precise dosing for continuous processesThe changeover from batch to continuous processes requires a particularly constant dosing capacity. Coperion has developed a system which reacts at an early stage to problems in the bulk material flow and thus enables precise dosing.

Dosing pumps – novelties and solutionsThe exact dosing of liquid chemicals is one of the core tasks in chemical processes. With increasing specialisation, the demands placed on the dosing pumps used in these processes are increasing. In our review we present up-to-date solutions.
