W e are so glad that you are with us today! Our service will be to praise and worship God and to encourage and uplift us to face another week. We will sing (Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16), pray (James 5:15-18), and partake of the Lord’s Supper to remember our Savior’s sacrifice on the cross (Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 11:23-26). We will also give back a portion of the monetary blessings that God has granted us so that we can carry out His work in our community (1 Cor. 16:2, 2 Cor. 9:7). We will also study a lesson from His Word that will hopefully be applicable to our daily lives, so that we can be equipped to handle the pressures of this world and reach those outside of Christ (2 Tim. 2:15). The weekday Ladies’ Bible Class will meet for our first class of the season on Tuesday morning, August 8, at 9:30 a.m. in the room off the Fellowship Hall. We will introduce and distribute the book we plan to study this year, “Walking to the Promised Land” by Lori Boyd. Class will be followed by a luncheon. All ladies are welcomed to join us.

We are helping Hiawassee’s congregation in their worship services by providing a song leader and someone to preside over the Lord’s table and prayer. We need two families, the fourth Sunday of each month, that can worship and assist with the church family at Hiawassee for Bible study at 10AM and worship at 11AM. If you would like to volunteer for this outreach, please see the sign up sheet posted on the bulletin board.

Please Note

Imagine what God could do through you

Cut to the Chase Here are this week’s verses and questions to study. We hope that you are taking time to study God’s word together as it is essential to study to be fully equipped as Christians. Let’s continue to grow spiritually so that we will be able to stand strong against the evils of this world.1. Proverbs 11:22

What does this illustration tell us about those who do not live modestly? What kind of discretion should we have as followers of Jesus? By who’s standard should we be measuring our modesty?

2. Proverbs 12:4What kind of characteristics should God’s people be looking for in a spouse? What can result if we do not choose the right kind of person?

3. Proverbs 12:15How should we treat those who try to help us? How should we handle constructive criticism? What does this say about those who do wrong? Do they see themselves as wrong?

4. Proverbs 12:16How should we react to those who hurt us? How does this relate to what Jesus taught?

This Friday, August 11th, we will be providing breakfast and devotional for the Gilmer High School football team. We have done this for the last couple of years as they kick off the new school year. We will begin cooking at 5:30 AM and will need several volunteers for this to run smoothly. There is a sign up sheet posted on the bulletin board if you would like to help. Thank you in advance!

The family counselor will be here the weekend of August 12th & 13th. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please see Jeremy Green.

There will be a 10 minute meeting for all C-Squad parents following morning service on Sunday, August 13th.

On Sunday night, we discussed the issue of “lifting hands” during worship as part of our regular Sunday night Q&A. The question was very insightful, and I wanted to revisit the answer just a bit so that it is clear and concise. As anyone visiting our service would notice, we do not commonly practice the raising of hands during our worship even though 1 Timothy 2:8 specifically mentions it, “I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.” So, why do we not lift up hands?

1) Raising hands is typically done throughout much of the religious world during the musical portion of worship, whether it be instrumental or a cappella. While singing can and should be heartfelt and emotional, and the incidental lifting of hands would not be inherently wrong or sinful, there is no discussion in the Bible of such a practice. In the Bible, whenever lifting hands is mentioned, it is in the context of prayer.

2) Throughout scripture, the term “hands” is used figuratively (Isaiah 59:1; Acts 4:28; Prov. 6:17). As Wayne Jackson explains, “lifting up holy hands (1 Tim. 2:8) is a figure of speech which emphasizes that effective prayer must be accompanied by a consecrated life – a life devoted to the service of God.” The command for men to lift holy hands during prayer in worship is a reminder that our lives must be right before we bring ourselves before God!

3) In the Bible, God never commands us to be in a specific posture when we come to him in prayer. Notice several different positions throughout the text: standing (1 Sam. 1:26), kneeling (1 Kings 8:54), prostrate (1 Kings 18:42; Mark 14:35), with spread hands (1 Kings 8:22), lifting hands (Psalm 63:4). In Luke 18, the tax collector beats his chest in sorrow as he prays to God! While he was not in sin for praying in such a way, we certainly would not want to do something so distracting in the context of the worship service. This same idea could certainly be applied to standing while everyone else is sitting, kneeling, or lifting hands. During our prayers, God should be our focus – not what everyone around us is doing.

What matters when we pray is that our lives are right and that we come to God in all humility. While no one could definitively say that raising hands during worship is wrong, we would never want to be a distraction because worship is, quite simply, not about us. Worship is about God!
