(with vessel sink). We tiled the floor, wallpapered and trimmed out the border. We also removed the mirror and replaced with a framed mirror. (See photo at right.)

Q: What materials did you use? A: I used Butterscotch Maple to reface the cabinets in the kitchen. The countertop is a Wilson Laminate granite look-alike (I wanted the look of granite without the expense!). It came with a built in under-mounted sink, just like the granite countertops do. I increased my cabinet capacity by adding four pullout shelves/drawers in the lower cabinets on either side of the stove. I love them!

Q: How long did it take? A: The countertop installation took two days. Refacing the cabinets took 4 days. The fact that it was several weeks apart is what caused my kitchen to be dysfunctional for most of a month!

Q: Last, but not least, did you have a particular budget you were working with?A: The kitchen cabinets and countertop ran $11, 000. The bathroom projects were pay as you go, and I was not working around a budget, but rather I got what I liked and wanted.

Q: What is your name?A: Barbara Huffman. I am the original owner, and I bought this house in 1982.

Thanks for sharing your story, Barbara! To all you Westcreek resi-dents out there that are working on your own remodeling projects, we’d love to hear from you! Just email me at [email protected], and we will look at your story for publication.

Hike and Bike Trail Approved by Membership

At the June 10th General Meeting called by Christie Gaderson, WNA President, Westcreek residents approved the idea of a Hike and Bike trail in Westcreek by a vote of 9-1. By doing so, members approved the start of the process of working with the City of Austin through Brewster McCracken’s office and the Public Works Department to construct a trail connection between the north end of Brush Country Drive and Monterrey Oaks Drive. The Oak Hill Trails Association is working on behalf of the WNA to limit any expenditure that may be necessary, but in the worst case it would require the Westcreek Neighborhood Association to maintain liability insurance for the part of the trail maintained by our neighborhood. Brewster McCracken’s office is expected to help us in removing any fees and liability. If you’d like to help out on a personal level, tax-deductible donations to the Oak Hill Trails Association for this particular trail connection improvement can be made through the Austin Parks Foundation at www.austinparks.org.

Yard of the Month for JuneBy Judy Jefferson

Our Yard of the Month winners for June are Kathleen & Alston Cameron, who live at 4526 Langtry Lane with their two dogs, Maggie and September (that’s the month they adopted her). They fell in love with Westcreek while visiting a friend and moved here from the Zilker Park area a little over a year ago.

Kathleen is a paralegal with a law firm not too far from the neighborhood. Alston is a teacher at Cedar Creek Elementary School. They both enjoy baseball, and since cycling is one of their hobbies the Hike and Bike story in a previous newsletter piqued their interest. Alston told me he has killed many plants trying to discover which ones would thrive in the yard. I’m happy to say this yard story has a happy ending. The Cameron’s received a $25 gift card from Randalls and a $50 gift card from Emerald Garden. Our thanks go to both Randalls and Emerald Garden for continually supporting Westcreek’s Yard of the Month program.

Recipes of the MonthBy Mark Strouhal

Westcreek Resident and Sous-chef at Kenichi

Collard Green Cole SlawIngredients: 1 head red cabbage, sliced thin 1 head green cabbage, sliced thin 1 bunch collard greens, stem removed and sliced thin 1 bunch parsley, chopped 1 C mayo 1 C sour cream 1/2 lemon juice or 2 oz apple cider vinegar 1 T Dijon style mustard 1 t cayenne kosher salt black pepper Instructions: Combine all leafy vegetables in a bowl and toss. Combine wet ingredients and salt and pepper (your personal preference on how much!) in a separate bowl. When ready to serve, combine ONLY what you need together. Season again to taste with salt and pepper. Any extra cabbage and mayo mix can be wrapped and placed in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Pan-fried OkraIngredients: 20 okra pods, cut in half length-wise 1 C cornmeal 1 t cayenne 3 Roma tomatoes, cut in half length-wise, then sliced (like half moons) kosher salt black pepper canola oil couple of pats of butter Instructions: Preheat a large sauté pan on high. Season cornmeal with salt, pepper and cayenne. Toss okra in cornmeal. Now the key is NOT overcrowding the sauté pan with okra. Place okra in a single layer in pan, cook for 1 minute, add some tomatoes and a pat or 2 of butter, season with salt and pepper and cook for another 2 minutes. Eat immediately. The proper cooking of this dish might require 2 or 3 cooking batches.

Summary of May Executive Meeting May’s meeting was lightly attended with only four members present – enough for a quorum. Topics of discussion covered Oak Wilt, proposed trails in the area, problems on Summerset, Neighborhood Welcoming Committee, upcoming General Meeting (scheduled for Jun 10th) and the usual Committee business. Apparently Oak Wilt continues to be a problem in our neighborhood in the vicinity of Morning Dew. Gary Bunevick, Member at Large, offered to contact the City’s Arborist to have him come out and assess the current situation. Gary had also attended the recent Oak Hills Trail Association (OHTA) and said that proposed CAMPO funding for trails in our area had been re-directed elsewhere, leaving only the City’s Parks Department as a possible funding source. OHTA was ready to move on the proposed trail between the end of Brush Country and Monterrey Oaks Blvd., but that may be postponed. There was discussion about reported problems on Summerset (speeding, mail box trashing, etc) and what may be done on it. Gary recommended contacting Office Seago, our area representative to see of there are crime statistics for that specific area. There was also discussion about the possibility of placing another speed sign along that stretch. Judy Jeffferson, Member at Large, brought some gifts and coupons donated by local merchants to go in our Westcreek welcome bags. We hope to be presenting these welcome bags to new homeowners soon. If you know of a new homeowner, please email Chris at [email protected] with their information so we can welcome them.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUTNEW DATE IN OCTOBER

The date for National Night Out in Texas this year is Tuesday, October 7th. Officer Cindy Seago said that Texas is the only state to be granted a different date for NNO because of the intense heat in August. If you intend to hold a party this year please let me know, so I can come by and take photographs for the newsletter. Email me at [email protected].

Follow-up to Cindy Seago article last issue:

APD graffiti investigation leads to 18 arrests The Austin Police Department announced today that 18 individuals have been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges following a ten-month investigation into reported graffiti cases throughout the city. Working with various citizens, neighborhood associations, business groups, and other law enforcement agencies including the Austin Independent School District Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety, evidence has been gathered in numerous graffiti incidents. This information has been used in filing charges on 18 individuals. Most of those charged are adult repeat graffiti offenders. Over the last ten months, an APD Detective has been investigating reported graffiti cases to crack down on those responsible for thousands of dollars in graffiti property damage. So far, the investigation has led to the identification of more than 130 graffiti suspects and at least two dozen graffiti gangs. It’s estimated that the total property damage cost of graffiti in Austin exceeds a half million dollars a year. APD has focused on graffiti crimes in an attempt to minimize the damage and emphasize that the community will not tolerate graffiti. Ten of these arrests were made in the SW Austin area, with 8 misdemeanors and 4 felony arrests.
