En el histórico Cuadrangle

de Fort Sam Houston, el Lt. General William B. Caldwell IV asumió el cargo de Co­mandante de General de U.S. Army North, que opera desde este cuartel regional a un contingente de 27 mil militares y civiles.

El jueves 12 de enero a las 4 de la tarde, el General Charles H. Jacoby, Jr., co­mandante de North American Aerospace Defense Comand fue el anfitrión de una breve pero solemne ceremonia en la cual entregó la bandera de U.S. Army North al General Caldwell, como símbolo del nuevo cargo que asume este militar de carrera graduado de la academia de West Point, y quien ha recibido múltiples condecoraciones.

Su distinguida hoja de servi­cios incluye ser comandante de Brigada en las operaciones de Desert Shield, Desert Storm y comandante general de la División 82 de para­caidistas en Irak Freedom.

Entre otras responsabili­dades inherentes a su cargo en el comando general de U.S. Army North, el Lt. Gen. Caldwell tendrá que supervisar las operaciones de Homeland Defense and Civil Suport; igualmente todas las actividades del ejército en Fort Sam Houston.

Y si el acto de toma de po se sión (durante la ceremo­nia) fue de breves minutos, atrás de ello hay varias se­manas de intenso trabajo de escritorio que el Lt. General Caldwell desarrolló para fa­miliarizarse con las opera­ciones de U.S. Army North, institución que anteriormente era Fifth Army.

Fort Sam Houston, en San Antonio, es el centro nervio­so de vitales y complejas fun­ciones del departamento del Army, que además de ser el puesto de comando de United States Army North, también es el centro de operaciones de U.S. Army South, Army Medical Comand, Army Medical Department Center and School, Fifth Recruting Brigade y Navy Regional Recruting.

Además, desde octubre primero del 2010 Fort Sam Houston, en conjunción con las bases de Lackland y Ran­dolph, integran Joint Base San Antonio bajo la adminis­tración de U.S. Air Force.

Durante la ceremonia de toma de posición del cargo, el Lt. General William B. Caldwell IV estuvo acompa­ñado por su esposa Stephanie y por tres de los cinco hijos del matrimonio Caldwell.

San Antonio audiences are in for a fantastic treat this month – not only will they get to hear the com­plete works of Beethoven performed by all the best talent in San Antonio – the festival has attracted stars of the music world to our city as well.

This week, a prominent Mexican talent, Abdiel Vázquez, will play a free solo recital at the Instituto Cultural de Mexico, and then add his youthful shine to a performance with the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio on Sunday.

“When YOSA’s young players combine forces with a r ising star l ike Abdiel Vázquez, sparks will fly. Don’t miss your chance to hear the future of classical music: San Antonio’s very best young musicians, playing at the top of their game!” Troy Peters, YOSA music di­rector, said. Peters will conduct that performance.

Vázquez made his Mexi­co City’s Bellas Artes Pal­ace debut with the National

Symphony Orchestra per­forming Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, in the finals of the V National Piano Competition where he won first prize and a gold medal.

The young pianist, 27 years old, also received the National Youth Award f rom former Mexican President Vincente Fox in 2010, just a year after having received the State Youth Award from Nuevo Leon’s Governor. He was

also distinguished with the Citizen’s Merit Medal for his contribution to the community’s artistic and cultural growth.

Vázquez has performed in the U.S., Argentina, Eu­rope and all over Mexico, with such orchestras as the National Symphony, Nuevo Leon’s Symphony, Tamaulipas Symphony, and the Youth Symphony of Nuevo Leon. He soloed

One-on-one help to complete the Free Application for Federal Stu-dent Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Ap-plication for State Financial Aid (TASFA) in San Antonio with city-sponsored “Student Aid Sat-urdays.”

Many students give up on their dreams to go to college because they think they simply cannot af­ford to go. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many programs are available, from loans to grants to scholarships – but in order to get the financial aid, students have to apply.

And for some, the application process is so daunting; they miss out on great opportunities and the chance to study.

Free one-on-one help is avail-able in San Antonio

In San Antonio, thanks to Stu­dent Aid Saturdays, students can get free one­on­one help filling out the forms and sending in the application.

The program is a partnership between schools, businesses and community organizations across Bexar County to offer FREE help filling out the sometimes compli­cated federal and state forms for college financial aid. Through a collaboration of the City of San Antonio, San Antonio Education

Partnership, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Café College, and Generation TX San Antonio, this program will help more San Antonio students apply for financial aid for college.

Students who complete and submit a FAFSA application are 350 percent more likely to go to college, according to Student Fu­tures Project.

So Mayor Julián Castro will host a pep rally to kickoff the free Student Aid Saturdays Program on Friday, January 20 at South San Antonio High School, located at 2515 Navajo.

“Student Aid Saturdays is a fantastic opportunity for students from all different walks of life to get the resources they need to reach their American dream,” Mayor Castro said. “We are committed to creating a core of young people who are well educated and ready to compete with anyone in the world for the brainpower jobs of the 21st century.”

Apply for financial aid as soon as possible in 2012 for the upcom-ing academic year

To determine aid eligibility for financial aid for college, students and parents should fill out federal or state financial aid forms as early as in 2012 as possible. Financial aid is generally awarded on a first-come, first-served basis so the sooner students apply for financial

aid, the more money they are likely to receive.

“The San Antonio business com­munity must come together to sup­port the needs of our college­going students,” Richard Perez, president and CEO of the Greater San Anto­nio Chamber of Commerce, said. “It is essential we build an educated workforce for the future of the San Antonio business economy.”

At the pep rally, students and parents will learn more information about Student Aid Saturdays. There will also be a DJ, student drum line, red carpet photos, games and tips for getting ready for college.

“Every year, aid­eligible students who think they might not qualify miss out on financial aid by sim­ply not applying,” Mari Aguirre Rodriguez, executive director of Generation TX San Antonio, said.

“All high school seniors entering college and applying for financial aid must complete the FAFSA in or­der to be eligible for assistance and the Student Aid Saturdays Program will individually help students and parents do so,” she added.

Student Aid Saturdays will host events in English and Spanish every Saturday from January 28 through March 17 at various locations throughout San Antonio.

Southwest General Hospital is ringing in the New Year with a new leader by welcoming Craig Desmond to the helm as the new CEO effective as of January 12.

“IASIS Healthcare and South­west General Hospital is proud to announce the arrival of Craig Desmond as the new CEO,” said Richard Gonzalez, market president over Texas/Florida/Louisiana for IASIS Healthcare parent company of Southwest General Hospital. “Craig has previously led other IASIS Texas operations and we are thrilled to have him back in the IASIS and Southwest General family.”

Desmond comes to Southwest General from Methodist TexSan Heart Hospital in San Antonio

where he oversaw the successful merger and completion of the Methodist System’s purchase of TexSan Heart Hospital in 2011.

Desmond originally joined IASIS in 2000 as the chief operating officer of Park Place Medical Center in Port Arthur, TX where he was later promoted to CEO. He also served as CEO of Mid Jefferson Hospital in Nederland, TX.

During his last few years with IASIS, he was instrumental in building The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, combining the Park Place and Mid Jefferson workforces and medical staffs.

Upon leaving IASIS in 2006, he joined MedCath Corporation where he served as the president and CEO of TexSan Heart Hos­pital, a 120­bed general acute care facility jointly owned by MedCath and various physician

partners. Early in his career, Craig also

held management positions with The Methodist Hospital System; Peak Systems, Inc.; and Memo­rial Hermann Hospital all in Houston, TX.

A new CBS comedy starring Rob Schneider features several Latino actors such as Cheech Marin, Diana Maria Riva, Lupe Ontiveros, as well as the popular award­winning Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, who took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to chat with LP.

According to Derbez, ¡Rob! (which premiered on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET) reminds him of “Meet the Parents” – but in this case, it’s more like meet your new Mexican family. The premise of the new show is what happens when an architect named Rob (played by Schneider) mar­ries into a tightly­knit Mexican family.

Derbez, a veteran television actor from Mexico, said one thing he likes about the series is the fact that it turns stereo­types upside down.

“The show breaks stereotypes, showing Mexicans as successful entrepreneurs,” Derbez said. “But I still get to play the trou­blemaker.”

And the pilot proves him to be correct, unafraid to yield both

uncomfortable and sometimes funny political incorrectness. Rob, Schneider’s character in the show, has OCD which gives him license to carry on in ways that would be considered socially unacceptable now and then – and certainly makes him wince when he has to endure the affections of a warm Latino family.

Derbez explained he got the role thanks to a strong recom­mendation from Schneider’s wife, Mexican television pro­ducer Patricia Azarcoya Arce.

“Thanks to Patricia, they wait­ed a year while I wrapped up ‘La Familia P. Luche’,” he said.

Derbez created and starred in the popular Mexican series

“Neighbors” and “XHDRbZ” as well as the series, “La Familia P. Luche.” He presented the Latin Grammys for 2009 and 2010.

Recently, Derbez performed in the Adam Sandler comedy “Jack and Jill.” Other television credits include “See if I Care,” “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and “Under the Same Moon.”

Born in Mexico City, Derbez is the son of Sylvia Derbez, one of the most popular actresses in film and television in Mexico. He started his acting career at age 12 and studied at the Mexican Cinematography and Theater In­stitute and at the Televisa Acting School. Derbez is also schooled in dance, music and singing.

El organismo de reciente crea­ción Asociación de Puerto Rique­ños en San Antonio (APRISA) hace una invitación al público para unirse a este dinámico grupo que tiene la misión de propagar la cultura de la Isla del Encanto me­diante festividades tradicionales, reuniones sociales y participar en eventos de interés colectivo.

Al hacer la invitación a la comu­nidad de San Antonio, Migdalia Aponte, coordinadora de eventos especiales de esta nueva sociedad civil, afirmó que como primer paso para adquirir la membresía solo se requiere la información personal de la persona interesada, y que tenga la intención de disfrutar de la alegría, tradición y expresiones de Puerto Rico. Y, naturalmente, sin distinción de identidad nacional.

APRISA tiene dos años de existencia gracias a la idea de sus fundadores, César y Mildred Del Valle. Su iniciativa interesó a un grupo de activas damas y caballe­

ros que han tenido éxito en la or­ganización de las fiestas de fin de año, a las que acudió una numerosa asistencia.

APRISA está en un proceso de identificación en el ambiente local, y tiene como principal incentivo el entusiasmo de sus socios, como fue evidente en el éxito de las festividades que han organizado hasta la fecha.

Particularmente, para los ori­undos de Puerto Rico, al inscri­birse en APRISA podrán encon­trarse con socios que provienen de lugares como Santurce, Bayamón, Cuamo, Caguas, Río Piedras, etc. Y desde luego de San Juan.

Durante la temporada decem­brina, esta asociación desarrolló tres eventos socio­culturales: la Bohemia Puertorriqueña, una tradicional pasteleada, y la fiesta de Navidad y Año Nuevo. La próxima celebración que está contemplada es la festividad de la Constitución de Puerto Rico, que se celebra ofi­cialmente en dicho país el 25 de ju­lio. Todas estas y otra actividades formarán parte del calendario de eventos para el año en curso.

Pancho Villa, uno de los prin­cipales líderes y generales de la Revolución Mexicana, aun sigue despertando interés entre los his­toriadores y artesanos de la época actual. Asimismo a escritores de libros y a los productores de películas, quienes se han encar­gado de recalcar la importancia de este líder con la subasta de su última silla de montar.

Este equipo para cabalgar fue hecho a mano para Francisco “Pancho” Villa a principios del siglo XX por los famosos fabrican­tes mexicanos Joaquín Rodríguez (carpintero) y Alberto Tulán Cingo Márquez (especialista en cuero y plata). Un poco de historia El valor de la silla es alto debido

a que fue prestada en tiempos de Villa por Luz Corral de Villa, viu­da del mismo Pancho Villa, para la filmación de la película “Viva Villa!”, grabada en la ciudad de México en el año de 1933.

La silla fue comprada por el di­rector de película Howard Hawks antes de haber sido sustituido

como director del filme Viva Villa! Hawks conservó la silla durante toda su vida como un recuerdo y patrimonio de la familia, el cual fue comprado tiempo después por el empresario Chuck Ramsey, quien actualmente reside en San Antonio.

Chuck Ramsey, dueño de la galería Trails West Gallery ubica­da en Laguna Beach (California), reside en San Antonio. Y ahora se siente orgulloso de poder com­partir este artefacto tan importante para los historiadores con la gente de San Antonio.

El director Hawks, al tiempo de haber comprado la montura, tuvo la oportunidad de comenzar a grabar películas en Europa, por lo que vendió su casa en Califor­nia, dejando en venta también sus propiedades, dentro de las cuales se encontraba la famosa silla.

Después de un tiempo, Hawks vio la silla anunciada en una su­bas ta en televisión, y en julio de 1976, entabló un reclamo con el departamento de policía de Palm Springs, lugar en el que decidió vivir a su regreso de Europa. De acuerdo a Chuck Ramsey, la silla fue incautada por orden de la ofi­cina del registro público de Fresno, California.

La montura estuvo en reclamo

durante una temporada, y gracias a la ayuda del talabartero Edward H. Bohlin, quien la examinó, se logró obtener nuevamente la posesión de la silla. Bohlin produjo una detallada carta dirigida al banco City National Bank, en la cual de­terminó la construcción y el valor potencial de la misma.

Hawks obtuvo la silla bajo su testamento, y gracias a los anun­cios y la polémica, doctores y curadores de importantes univer­sidades de los Estados Unidos, lo contactaron para hacerle saber de la importancia de promover este tipo de artefactos en museos, ex­hibiciones y presentaciones.

En subastaRamsey, quien ahora tiene la

silla, platicó con La Prensa y dijo que para él ha sido un orgullo con­servarla durante 20 años, sin em­bargo considera que ya es tiempo de que alguien más se haga de ella.

Asimismo, comenta que esta silla por el momento se encuentra en el museo Witte, rotándose con el museo de South Texas History, ubicado en Edinburg, Texas.

Ramsey también nos platicó que la silla ha sido vista por más de 12 millones de visitantes durante 18 años, y que espera que siga siendo conservada y llevada a los museos más importantes de la nación.

According to Dice, as the Eagle Ford shale play in South Texas marks its third anniversary, activity is booming.

Event operators say the rig count reached 176, making South Texas the second most active play in the U.S. outside of the Permian Wolf­berry, which has a rig count of 187. Operators of all sizes, from Asian national oil companies to private­

equity-backed start-ups, are flocking to the area, and no wonder: they can drill for natural gas, condensate, natural gas liquids and oil targets.

Daily production is about 72,000 barrels of oil and close to 1.5 Bcf of dry gas and the natural gas liquids are a precious bonus.

He was just 6 years old when he started studying piano with Myrna Treviño and won his first local piano competition when he was 13. A graduate of the Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey, he studied with Gerardo González, and then earned his master’s degree at Manhattan School of Music, under renowned pianist James Tocco. He now continues to study in Madrid under Oxana Yablanskaia.

In a special performance as a featured partner of the San Antonio Symphony’s Beethoven Fest, the YOSA Philharmonic will present “Beethoven and Orpheus” featuring Vázquez in Beethoven’s epic Fourth Piano Concerto at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 22 at the Laurie Audi­torium.

The pianist is delighted to play with YOSA.

“This is great music and it’s a great approach to present Beethoven with fresh faces per­forming,” he said.

He confessed that his favor­ite composer is whomever he happens to be playing at the moment.

“Right now, Beethoven is my favorite,” he said.

The young pianist is most proud of the fact that he is grounded – he understands that a concert pianist is only as good as his last performance – “and even that doesn’t last very long,” he shared.

Los daños en los órganos vitales que nos deja el alcoholismo son irreparables. Lo mismo la trans­formación física, ya que el ingerir cualquier tipo de bebida alcohólica, o tomar drogas ilegales y recetadas, adultera la estructura física: se sube de peso, se inflama el rostro, los ojos se ponen rojizos, se dan cambios en el habla y al caminar.

El abuso de bebidas embriagantes

y consumo de drogas causa daños en los riñones, hígado, intestinos; lo cual nos deja un pésimo mal aliento. Claro que existen varios remedios para que desaparezcan dichas mar­cas de nuestro cuerpo.

La ciencia médica advierte que los abusos que se cometen tanto en el consumo de alcohol, drogas, alimentos y bebidas refrescantes causan estragos en el ser humano.

“Para controlar tu alto colesterol en tus comidas, tienes que comer una porción de frijol, arroz, una tortilla ya sea de harina o de maíz,

así como una rebanada de pan. Un día puedes comerte una porción de frijol, y al siguiente una de arroz, más no debes comer ambas a la vez. Todo con medida y pronto verás los buenos resultados”. Estas son las palabras que mi doctor me repite en cada cita trimestral que tengo con él. En verdad, no le he obedecido, ya que desde hace once años que dejé la bebida he sido más cautelo­so, estableciendo una dieta bastante controlada. Por ejemplo, ahora en lugar de un desayuno “picoso”, me preparo una buena ración de

avena cocida con té de manzanilla. Posteriormente, huevos sin yema revueltos con nopal cocinados con mantequilla dietética, y lo acom­paño con tortillas o pan de trigo. Para la cena me sirvo unos tres pedazos de pescado, pollo rostizado o en trozos (chicken fajitas), ya que solo hago una comida completa al día. Este sistema alimenticio, con el paso de los años, me ha ayudado a perder 70 libras. Actualmente, me manejo entre las 190 y 195 libras, lo que para mi doctor es un buen peso, que me ayuda al combate del colesterol.

Antes de dormir hago 15 o menos minutos de ejercicios en bicicleta fija, e, imitando en la práctica del karate a mi héroe favorito de

los 70’s, Bruce Lee. Todas estas actividades para mí han sido la mejor medicina, ya que dejé de tomar medicamentos para la alta presión y alto colesterol. Esto no lo saben en la clínica de mi doctor de cabecera; sin embargo, ahí se me sigue informando que los resultados del laboratorio han regresado satis­factoriamente. Los tratamientos personales me han dejado buenos resultados, el color de mi piel es el de promedio normal, por igual el ritmo sanguíneo, colesterol y sin dolores en los órganos vitales.

Por lo que no me queda más que seguirle dando duro a la dieta y ejer­cicios, para así cuando menos poder seguir viviendo un día a la vez. Hasta la próxima, Dios mediante.

According to the latest Gallup poll, Americans were less fat in 2011 than they were in 2010, based on data taken from the Gallup­Healthways Well­Being Index which includes self­reports of individual’s body mass index (BMI) scores from more than 355,000 people ages 18 and older.

Results showed the change was scarce—obesity in America declined from 26.6 percent to 26.1 percent.

Despite the small change, Gallup remained positive citing, “The cost of obesity is so high that even this small improvement has the potential to save the American economy a significant amount of money. A December 2010 analysis by the Society of Actuaries estimates that the total cost of obesity to the U.S. economy has climbed as high as $270 billion. Gallup’s own analysis finds that obesity and related chronic health issues cost businesses alone upward of $150 billion annu­ally.”

With the prevalence of obesity, entrepreneurs and advocates to help the cause have founded social net­work platforms to help those battling the disease.

Igor Levovic, co­founder of Calo­rieCount.com explained, “Calorie Count’s tools allow our members to keep track of their daily intake. Our members are often surprised to see their daily calorie totals, be­cause people tend to underestimate the calories in foods. Using Calorie Count, our members have a better understanding of how many calories they’ve consumed and how many

There are roughly 150 million adults in the U.S who are overweight or obese, a number that is projected to increase dramatically over the next decade.

El club de hockey sobre hielo profesional San Antonio Rampage se quitó la mala racha al derrotar al visitante Rockford IceHog con marcador de 2 goles a 1.

El AT&T Center fue el esce­nario donde Rampage, dirigido por Chuck Weber, celebró su 10º aniversario de militancia en la American Hockey League (AHL), donde han sido sucursales de los clubes Florida Panthers (al comienzo y actualmente), y de los Coyotes de Phoenix, am­bos pertenecientes a la National Hockey League (NHL).

Los jugadores vistieron playeras conmemorativas, las cuales al final del partido fueron subasta­das al mejor postor, destacando la camiseta del capitán Nolan Yonkman que fue vendida por la cantidad de $5,000.

Los $40,000 recaudados fueron

donados a las organizaciones Sil­ver & Black Give Back, y la S.A. Youth Hockey Association.
