Customer benefits

• Enables more ergonomic boat interior design

• Enables more accurate, comfortable and safe steering for better boat maneuverability

• Integrated and virtually maintenance free technology reduces lifetime cost

To meet IPS tough steering input require-ments, Volvo Penta relied on SKF’s ability to continuously develop new technological solutions to match customers’ challenging needs.

For that reason since 2010 SKF has developed and introduced in the market a new generation of electronic steering input units and its first customer became Volvo Penta.

The SKF Electronic Steering Input Unit is a mechatronic solution with integrated Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and embed-ded software developed to offer a robust steering input to be fitted in both electro-

hydraulic and electro-mechanic steering systems for boats.

This unit offers a flexible, light and com-pact solution with smart functions for driv-ers’ comfort such as programmable end-stop and controllable passive steering feedback.

The SKF Electronic Steering Input Unit opens new possible scenarios to improve steering system performance, in particular better steering feeling and lower power consumption.

The compact size and low weight help to improve ergonomics of the boat interior design. Moreover the steering feedback

dynamically adapts itself to different boat driving conditions. For example, the steer-ing wheel “resistance” can be dynamically adapted to the steering wheel turning speed: this enables more accurate, com-fortable and safe steering.
