Upcoming Events

Dance on Water is set to connect Birmingham and Salford through contemporary dance and waterways, boosting the participants’ confidence, creativity and confidence. It will be a very special collaboration between young people, Matthew Bourne’s acclaimed Re:Bourne company, two highly regarded international arts venues, and local people along the stretch of 200-year old canals. Travelling along the canal network at not much more than four miles an hour offers the young people the chance to enter a slower, mindful world - escaping everyday life and the pressures that come with it. There can’t be many dance companies waking up to the gentle lapping of water and so close to wildlife. It’s a unique environment, one we hope inspires the dancers and choreographers ahead of the performances at the Lowry and Hippodrome. Starting in Birmingham on 1 July, the team will travel by boat to Salford over the course of seven days, before performing at The Lowry in Salford on 9 July, as part of the National Youth Dance Festival. They’ll then return to Birmingham for a performance at the Birmingham Hippodrome on 10 July. There will be 5 boats carrying the 20 performers from Norbury to Salford and the boat skippering team have asked for assistance navigating the locks along the way. We are looking for trained lock keepers to assist in this event especially at Audlem and Middlewich, but potentially at any of the locks along the way. The dates concerned will be:

Boats cruise from Norbury Wharf to Adderley Locks and Hawsksmoor Visitor Moorings on the

Shropshire Union Canal (14 miles, 10 locks, 7.5 hours).

They will navigate from Adderley Locks to Barbridge (11 miles, 17 locks, 7 hours).

The boats will travel from Barbridge to Billinge Green Flash on the Middlewich Branch (14 miles, 8 locks, 7.5 hours).

The boats travel from Billinge Green Flash to the Anderton Boat Lift, one of the jewels of the

waterways and the UK’s only operational Victoria boat lift, on the Trent & Mersey Canal (5 miles, 2

hrs).

If you can assist with any of these days please get in touch so we can try and assist these 5 boats through the waterway as smoothly as possible.

"The beautiful weather brought an excellent turn out for the regular Chester Towpath Taskforce on Saturday 28

May, despite it being Chester Races Day and a Bank Holiday. There was the added bonus of a rare steam train

crossing the tracks just in front of the Northgate Locks. We weeded and generally tidied around the locks,

lopping back vegetation and even managed to start painting the white bridge railings - an on-going summer

project. A great big thank you to everyone who came along and, of course to Chris and Steve from CRT. The

next Chester Towpath event will be planting up the Cambrian Road access ramp together with the local Scout

troupe, people from Chester Zoo, should be good."

Lead Volunteer - Christine Fraser

Every month we plan to feature a group of volunteers or volunteer and showcase who they are and what they do. This months Featured Volunteers are the Chester Towpath Taskforce, based in Chester between Northgate Locks and Cambrian Road Bridge area, they carry out a multitude of tasks from litter picking and painting to re-building and planting a new area around the access ramp at Cambrian Road Bridge.

Many thanks to Christine for her article, I am sure many of you will find this interesting. If anyone would like to attend one of the Taskforce Events at Chester please contact either

Christine Fraser - 01244 372731 or Steve Maguire – [email protected]

If you would like your group to feature in this section in the future, please send me some information about

yourselves and what you do, including a photo or 2 and I will try to feature them in the coming months.

11 miles of the Llangollen Canal was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2009, its boosts a
