School’s out! But what now? If you feel an urge to see the world, experience new things, and learn about yourself and others, volunteering overseas might be the next step. Volunteering after school finishes gives you a break to think about what comes next, it is an adventure, a new set of personal challenges, a chance to give back…and is a lot of fun!

WHAT TO DO…There are so many ways to help, and so many places to see! You can teach kids for whom learning English is a lifeline out of poverty, look after children who ended up living on the street, or make sure turtle eggs hatch, and are not poached. The responsibilities you adopt working on these projects builds leadership, teamwork, cross cultural communication skills and independence.But it’s not all work, work, work. Think Angkor Wat on the weekends, the beaches of Jamaica after work, or safari in South Africa for ‘just something to do’. Plus there is the cultural side: the rewarding day when you finally learn how to say thank you in Ethiopian, or the laughter from your host family as you experiment with how to tie a Sari in India!

THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCEWhen you volunteer with us, you live and work with other young volunteers from all over the world – from the USA to France - and you stay with a local host family. This gives you a privileged insight into the real lives of people in far off lands: an insight and perspective that stays with you for life. After leaving school, I spent two months volunteering in Peru. I worked on a pioneering conservation programme deep in the heart of the rainforest. Living with a group of volunteers in a jungle clearing, I helped in scientific studies, in developing sustainable farming techniques, trail maintenance and at an animal rescue centre, rehabilitating monkeys back into the wild.

During my gap year, I spent three months working on the human rights programme in South Africa, working in a refugee camp and also supporting young offenders awaiting court dates. On completing this project, I went to Ghana to volunteer as a reporter on a daily newspaper.

I volunteered in Romania for three months after finishing school. I divided my time between working at a hospital for neglected children and a local newspaper. I gave essential emotional and developmental support to very poor children and fell in love with the country and people.
