Hye Notes

Ed Tefankjian, President

The fi rst Newcomer’s Social for 2008 was held at Round Table Pizza and there was an excellent mix of new and old members......based on the feed-back, it looks like there are new members that will be very active in LPR. April is the beginning of Spring and the LPR “events” calendar is full of fun activities, check the POST for the details. Like most social clubs LPR is an all volunteer organization and if you haven’t already attended a “Board Meeting” (typically held on the fi rst Thursday of the month) I would recommend that you attend to see how your club is run. Also, there may be some board or committee positions that you may be interested in......new members bring new ideas.Hope to see you soon at one of the LPR events.

You too can enjoy your own Costa Rican adventure!

Casa Orquidea is available for weekly rentals. Located inside Hacienda Pinilla, home to JW

Marriott’s new 5 star resort (opening in Dec 08). Golf, surfing, horseback

riding & much more! Sleeps 8 in luxury surroundings.

Post positions

Kevin Bennett, Editor

Debbie told me that she recently heard Wayne Rogers (Trapper John from the M*A*S*H television show, now a fi nancial analyst on Fox) participate in a debate on the state of the U.S. economy. Rogers asserted that the current housing crisis, wherein tens of thousands of property owners are losing their homes to foreclosure, is not the “tragedy” that is being played up by the news media and pandered to by the politicians, but is rather merely the result of people being allowed to purchase homes who could simply not afford them. He further ventured that the housing market is merely undergoing a correction, creating a “false recession” and that he felt that a full blown recession is not in the cards.Having been an independent businessman and a fi nancial conservative, I have to admit that I admire Rogers immensely. He is one of the few actors who briefl y hit it big and, unlike his peers, while the big money was rolling in, rather than living large, he invested it. He was so successful at handling his own fi nances that he was solicited by others in the industry to manage their money, hence his abrupt disappearance from the stage. As a conservative, it’s easy to readily identify with Roger’s analysis and dismiss the plight of the ousted homeowners. I certainly don’t agree with the notion that the taxpayer should be funding any bailout based on the potential travails of these economically stressed individuals, but then that philosophy falls right in line with Marie Antoinette’s fabled line in response to being told that the masses had no bread, to whit,“Let them eat cake.”I used to have no sympathy for people who got themselves into fi nancial trouble; after all, a modest amount of discipline is all that is needed to stay out of trouble. The problem is that in a capitalist republic like ours, it is the individual vs. the corporate world, and that world is a huge, varied and, yes, dangerous jungle. It is fi lled with savage packs of MBAs and PhDs, working for gargantuan fi nancial juggernauts, dreaming up new schemes to separate the herd from its money. Easy credit has for many years been one of the most profi table means of extracting coin from the masses. Spend, spend, spend is the message. Borrow for that dream vacation! Take a second on your house to remodel or take that dream vacation! Buy a timeshare on credit so you can take that dream vacation every year! Pre-approved credit offers became so prevalent that an entire criminal movement was born, culling these offers from mail boxes. A more recent exploitation is pushing high interest credit cards on hard partying, hard drinking and unthinking college students during spring break.

Page 8: Volume XXXVIII No. 4 April 2008 PRIETA POST

8

POST Positions...

One of the results of all this easy credit was a booming bankruptcy business. But, lo, the banks also paid lobbyists, and these faithful toadies managed to get The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 passed which greatly diminished the consumers’ ability to walk away from their debts through bankruptcy. A conservative might feel that this is a good thing, but it is creating an ever tightening noose around the neck of the consuming public while relaxing what little constraint the credit industry had over its ever voracious appetite for the profi ts derived from dispensing easy credit. And what training do we give our children to survive in this fi nancial wild? If they’re lucky, they might endure a lesson or two in high school about how to balance a checkbook. Knowledge is a powerful thing and, as a consumer, it strikes me as unbalanced that all of the power seems to be on the side of the PhDs and the MBAs in this unceasing fi nancial contest.I once made an inquiry of a high school principal about giving some practical lessons to students about how to effectively handle their fi nancial affairs. I even offered to create a lesson plan and even teach the class. I felt that one week of one hour classes could easily offer lessons on why it’s not rude to say no to a salesman; how to fi nd the dealer’s cost of a new car; how to negotiate the purchase of same; methods of creating a painless savings program; the benefi ts of paying cash versus credit cards; the benefi ts of investing versus spending. The principal’s response was unenthusiastic and uninterested. I am not the type to believe in conspiracies, but it seems to me that the

big banks must have somehow worked their magical influence on the school system to deprive the students of these simple and empowering lessons, and on that basis, I am beginning to lose my easy identifi cation with business versus the over-extended consumer. Rogers is certainly right that the folks losing their homes really couldn’t afford them. But the big boys told these people that they could, and I’m beginning to think that that should count for something; if nothing else, the rethinking of the regulatory constraints placed on all of the fi nancial behemoths looking for ever more ways to milk the consumer for a lot more money.

Member Notes

Les Schreiber,

Membership Director

We had a great Newcomers Social on February 22nd at Round Table Pizza, and if you didn’t get a chance to attend, we will have another one September 12th. But you are always welcome at any of the events scheduled for the year, or drop in at our board meeting (1st Thursday of the month 7:00PM Round Table Pizza- Camden & Union)

James Quinn and I did a dry run the other day for the Mother’s Day Brunch location, and I think we have a great route planned for the beginning of the tour/brunch at the Bargetto Winery.

The people at the Bargetto Winery, in Soquel, are planning their menu - so keep that date open, May 11th for Brunch, Wine and at least a very enjoyable afternoon with your Porsche club friends.

A little history on the Bargetto Winery, which began with brothers Phillip and John Bargetto who emigrated from Castelnuovo Don Bosco, a small town in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. They brought with them many years of winegrowing experience when they established Bargetto Winery in 1933 on the banks of Soquel Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Today they are operated by the third generation Bargetto’s who have continued the commitment of their forefathers to produce wines of quality.

I would like to welcome the newcomers who have registered with PCA National this month, as we always enjoy seeing them at our events.

What better way to celebrate President’s Day weekend on a crisp winter evening than by immersion into the warmth of the comfortable surroundings of Bill and Lorraine Glathe’s home, fi lled with LPR friends of long-standing, as well as getting acquainted with newer members. This traditional visit for us to taste the many fl avors of home-made soups and salads is a great way to start the year!

When we arrived with Reg and Jean Ricket, our former Saratoga neighbors, we were pleased to see the newlywed’s, John and Angie Reed, as well as Rudi and Joanna Herz, Ken and June Iles and Carole and Larry Goodwin who were all LPR stalwarts when we transferred into the region back in the late ‘70’s. Much of the crowd was gathered in the kitchen around the island where the wonderful hors

d’oeuvres were on display. The Goodwin’s

provided a tasty assortment of cheeses, the Highley’s brought cranberry chicken,

and the Herz’s brought crab dip.

As we split up and circulated we saw faithful POST editor, Kevin Bennett with

his enforcer, Debbie, who asked me to write up the event. (I’m always

glad to make a contribution.) Debbie introduced me to new member Bonnie

Radding. When I met her husband, Herb, we had a good chat about our older

Porsches. The Radding’s daughter, Lisa, and her date, Scott Harris provided

some exotic beer. Pete and I were happy to see the ace 356 tech-man, Ralph

Maines still going strong. He came with Jeannie Murrell and his favorite

sushi.

The sumptuous soups that

were offered included split

pea soup by the Raddings;

mushroom soup by Steve

Crane and Jef f Tucker ;

butternut soup by Ed and

Karen Tefankjian; lima bean

and ham soup by Jim and

Diane Cox; southwest soup

by our hostess, Lorraine,

and clam chowder by John

and Angie Reed. An informal

poll showed that there were

many favorites, though the clam chowder disappeared fi rst. Barry and

Suzette Pangrle provided some delectable corn bread to go with this splendid

assortment.

As a counterpoint there were two types of pea salad, a chicken and wild rice salad

and two tossed greens salads. Our brand new members, Randy and Patsy Paul,

attending their fi rst event, brought a blackberry and blue cheese salad.

Of course there were a

variety of yummy deserts to

round out the evening for the

45 attendees for this event.

President Ed ran a short

business meeting and made

the presentation of handmade

chocolates, nuts and wine to

the Glathe’s for hosting the

event. This was followed by

a hardy round of applause by

satisfi ed diners.

With the Joe Pruss sales

push of LPR Calendar’s, a bonus for me attending the event was I now have a

convenient way to keep current on up-coming events.

As we were leaving we passed late-arriving Tom and Sandy Provasi. Sandy

requested Pete write up the event in verse, as he has done a few times in the

past. Sorry, Sandy, your wish will be fulfi lled another day.

Friday, February 22nd, saw Loma Prieta

Region’s fi rst Newcomer Social for 2008,

and it turned out to be a very entertaining

evening. Many newcomers attended this

“Let’s Get Aquainted Gathering’” at the

Round Table Pizza just off Camden Ave,

which is also the new site of our monthly

board meetings.

As at any social gathering with people

you have never met before, it is not

easy to remember everyone’s names

afterwards, so you’ll have to forgive any

omissions or mix-ups here. The “Hello, My Name Is” stick-on labels were

a great help at the time though.

Even Membership Director

Les Schreiber had diffi culty

talking to everyone personally,

for t here were so ma ny

people gathered around the

newcomers table and didn’t

seem to want to move away.

Same at the beer and pizza

table. I guess it’s one of those

things that seems to happen

at all social parties where

everyone seems to gather in the

kitchen and won’t move even if urged

to do so. Strange that, isn’t it, - wonder

why that is? But I digress.

One of the fi rst new couples arriving

were Richard and Wava Zorker, and

they were quickly followed by Stuart

and Caroline Marshall with their son

Mike. Keven and Allison Homewood

were there also, as was Ted and

Nancy Fischer, Bonnie and Herb

Radding, along with Scott Harris

and Lisa Radding too. There were

also several people there

that had attended only one

or two events before, and

so were still considered

newcomers. Of course,

everyone expressed “social”

as their main interest, with

competition driving in one

form or another being high

on their interest list too.

Apart from the friendliness

usually associated with

our region, the free pizza

and free beer undoubtedlty helped to promote a party-like atmosphere,

augmented further with wine for some from the adjacent bar. Prez

EdTefankjian of f iciated,

a long with Membership

Director Les Schreiber, and

everyone the was asked to

introduce themselves one

by one around the room, and

tell a little about themselves

and their Porsche(s). One of

the highlights of the evening

was Suzette Pangrle’s input.

Nor mal ly k now n to be

extremely quiet, teetotal

and reserved, Suzette had

everyone wondering what kind of a buzz she had on, for her description

of her car was hillarious and

decidedly untechnical. With wildly

f lailing and gyrating arms, she

loudly and most enthusiastically

described the car as having a long

thing at the front, and something

on the back that was this high,

and rounded stuff on the front

and elsewhere. At least I think

that was what she was saying, the

room was just so full of shreiks of

laughter it was hard to hear it all,

but I’m sure I heard someone say

... and the newcomers...

Suzette Pangrle (the evening’s winner for the most emotive car description) along with Keven & Allison

Homewood.

“I’ll have what she’s having”. Not surprisingly, hubby Barry with mouth

agape had a bewildered

look of incredulity on his

face.

A not her l au gh c a me

from newcomer Stewart

Marshall. an Englishman,

who on introducing himself

said “I expect you can tell

from my accent that I’m

from Los Gatos” His wife

Carolyn had an equally

“fi sh & chips” accent with

which I readily identify. Oohs and aahs were heard when another newcomer,

Herb Radding mentioned his long racing experience and driving at 200

mph, and good natured boos were

heard when Nancy Fischer said she

drove a BMW, but with uncanny

insight at recognizing a faux-pas,

she extricated herself to cheers

when she quickly added that she

was a connoiseur of wine.

These twice a year newcomer social get-

togethers are in themselves becoming

another one of Loma Prieta’s “good times”.

And do these new people attending appear

to be future good timers too? You bet!

Nancy Fischer, Gayle Gustafson and June Iles.

Lisa Radding, Bonnie & Herb Radding.

The trip’s all planned... had a little beer, a little pizza... Don Schmidek and James Quinn are happy campers.
