WELCOME FELLOW CATTLEMEN & SPOUSES

W elcome to Bar 5’s Annual 38th Spring Production Sale. It has been a tough cold winter, but cattle prices have warmed us up and kept us enthusiastic. Here it is Spring

and once more bull buying time along with some genetics to enhance your program.

We are still moving in the direction of producing moderate framed, easy calving cattle without sacrificing performance or maternal calving ease. Again in April we will bring out the best we have to offer in both our Fullblood Fleckvieh cattle and our Red and Black Angus.

All animals in our sale have been BIO tested for performance, ultra sounded for carcass values and phenotype appraised. We think our offering should include something for everyone’s genetic program.

We will again offer a more comfortable seating arrangement at the sale, while stabling the cattle close to the sale barn for the buyer’s convenience. Friday night social will include a video bull parade, dinner, embryo and semen auction and once a year the FSFF holds a fund raising Auction for the FSFF and NAILE show in KY and this year it is our turn.

We are proud to include a number of producers who participated in our test station as well as offering for the first time our new producer Matt Buschbeck.

Over the years, we would like to think that we have made some contribution to the breed but this is far out weighted by the many friendships developed over this time and we hope to renew many of these.

We hope to see you all there for the social and business aspects of the Sale.

Thanks for coming.

Ron Nolan

Dear Fullblood Fleckvieh Enthusiasts,

In 2010, the FSFF was on the move! A tremendously well accepted and supported benefit auction was hosted by Buzzard Hollow Ranch and generated over $10,800 toward the promotion of Fleckvieh and Fullblood Simmental cattle. One of the most progressive and exciting opportunities breeders of Fullblood cattle have is the North American International Livestock Expo at Louisville, Kentucky. The NAILE is the site for the only strictly Fullblood show in North America. Breeders from across the US and Canada participated as exhibitors and spectators. Congratulations to Ferme Gagnon, Kevin Smith, Donovandale Farms, and Professional Livestock for their success in the ring. This venue is growing and the continued support of the FSFF and premium monies is our responsibility in order to continue this tremendous event. This year, Bar 5 graciously offered the venue for the most important fundraising event of the year. I welcome your involvement as participants, both as consignors and buyers at this year’s benefit. If you have any items available or want an updated list prior to the sale, we will be glad to include them in this event. Thanks to Dora Lee Genetics for the tremendous support of this sale last year for contributing over $2500 worth of semen and embryos for the benefit of the FSFF! I’m looking forward to seeing you in Markdale. Picking up the pace in 2011! Sincerely,

Brian ValentineFSFF Chairman, Show and Sale Committee

VISUAL INSPECTION + PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT + ADJUSTED VALUES & RATIOS

A. Visual Inspection

We believe in using our own experience, and you should yours, when evaluating cattle for your program, through visual inspection to evaluate structural correctness, udder, body condition, docility, hair coats, & skeletal structure. Structural correctness & Visual appraisal are made, before selecting for a sale.

B. Glossary to “Certified” “Physical Assessment”

i) Birth, Weaning + EOT Ratios

Birth weight, Weaning weight and EOT measurements taken at the end of the 112 day test within a contemporary group, together for 140 days; are the 3 “Actual” physical measurements. A fourth is mature weight and height. All calves are ultrasounded for carcass values. All cows at Bar 5 are weighted and height measured at weaning and the calves, for mature ratios.

EXAMPLE:Birth Date: date of birth (BD)

BW: Actual Birth Weight at birth%DB: Birth weight of calf expressed as a percentage of the Dams weight. Dam weighed at weaning. Weaning WT: Actual – Actual weaning weight around 7 months.End of Test Date (EOT): Date of Evaluating, as close to target age of 13 months or 400 days of age as possible. % DW: Percent Dam at Weaning, AWW/Actual Dam weight taken at weaning time. EOT: Weight at End of Test: The date the physical measurements are taken and indicates the last day of the 122 day test. Hip Height: Height in inches at the EOT.Act. Density: Actual weight/hip Inches X 100; an actual reflection of the lbs of muscle relative to the skeletal size of the animal. Performed at, or as close as possible to 13 months. Fat: Actual Back Fat scanned by Ultra Sound on EOT, in “mm”.Rib Eye: Actual Rib Eye Area scanned by Ultra Sound on EOT in inches squared.REA/100 Ratio: Actual Rib Eye Area divided by EOT weight (REA-CWT)Marbling: Actual Marbling scanned by Ultra sound on EOT, %.Scrotal: Actual Scrotal measurement in “cm” on EOTFat: Marbling Ratio – Back fat score in mm, compared to %IMF.Test: A contemporary group for a 140 day period, ADG calculated on 112 day, post weaning weight.

Breed Association Genetic Evaluations, within Breed EPD’s only

a) Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Categories reported are CE, BW, WW, YW, MW, MILK, MCE, CW REA, FAT, YG, and MARB. Please refer to the CSA website www.simmental.com for the Glossary & descriptions. % Rk-Percentile Value from 1-95 is the score given as a percentage value for ease of comprehension for example a % 25 means the animals is in the

top 25% while a % of 75 means the animal is in the bottom 25% of all the animals in the breed. EPD’s are expected progeny differences or deviances. They only predict future performance differences based on reported past differences. One record by its self is of no use, as it has no contemporary group to compare to and no difference to measure. Also 50 animals in the same group with all the same measurement are of no use and are edited out because there was no measured difference or deviation. It is easy to see that growth traits like BW, WW, and YW are always going to have differences, thus breeders only have to worry about your CG (contemporary group). And that the sires you have in that CG tie your herd data to the broad data base, and thus your data ties into the broad data set. Including a couple of AI sired progeny in the CG goes a long way in increasing the accuracy of your own sire’s data.

ii) Adjusted Values

W Index – ratio of AWW compared to a contemporary group of calves that have all been treated the same since birth, an indication of mom’s milk & performance.AWW – Adjusted weaning weight adjusted to 200 days of age with age of dam adjustments.AYW – adjusted 365 day yearling weight. (ADG x 165) + AWW = AYWWPDA – AYW divided by 365Adj. SC – Scrotal circumference adjust to 12 months of age. Frame – Frame score; height adjusted for age to a frame score.Y Frame – Frame score adjusted to one year.Mature Frame – Frame measured between 24-48 monthsAdj. Density – Yearling adjusted weight (AYW / Frame Score) to reflect Density at a year, in adjusted terms.Adj REA – Rib Eye area adjusted to estimated size at 12 months of age. Adj IMF – Intramuscular fat adjusted to 12 months of age.Y HT – Yearling Hip Height, and adjusted estimate in inches at a year.MHT – Mature Height

C. Physical “EOT” Targets

i) Birth WT/Dam WT Ratio – Calf as a percent of Dam’s weight, aim for 5-7%.

ii) Weaning Weight Dam Ratio – the Cowboy’s Pay cheque!! Low BW but extreme high WW – we still say the perfect cow weighs 1000 lbs., but weans off a 1000 lbs calf at 7 months (Act. Wt / Dam Wt.) Our target is 65% / 1300 for 500%.

iii) Y Frame Score = 5.5 to 7.0, the Bar 5 desired range, YH – Yearling Height, MH – Mature Height

iv) Density – Aim for over 200 on the AYW/FS or Adjusted Density; using Actual Density of Height/Weight – 220 or 100 kgs.

v) Carcass Ultra Sound = Balanced Carcass Values; rib eye – over 1 inch per 100 lbs.

REA/CWT, high marbling % in the 3 or more range, & moderate BF of 4-10mm.

Actual Carcass Values: REA per 100 lbs: REA/CWT – over 1.6mm Back Fat at 1300 lbs.

6/1300 100= 0.46; Marbling 4.8%. 4.6 to 4.8 – See?vi) SC – Testicle measurements = (cms) and min in 34 cms at a year. vii) Yearling Weights – Keep it 1250+ at one year, or a level for your

desired carcass size, but remember as you break that 1550 lbs. Barrier – keep your eye on the Density & Frame Score as carcass increase as well.

Aim for these 6 targets and you will make Genetic Improvement!!

Yes, he is Homozygous Polled but look at his numbers both the BIO measurements representing his numbers and the EPD’S representing his pedigree numbers. Starting with a low birth weight, excellent performance, and medium frame with fat cover where we want it, good rib eye, carcass values and scrotal measurements. Then throw in EPD’s for MWWT in the top 10% and milk in the top 4% of the breed and you have the complete package. Now look at the bull, great colouring, big goggles, good top and smooth overall with a great quarter. He is sired by Doralee’s Lucas FF 17U, Dora lee’s new junior herd sire and out of a heifer Sanmar Polled Rocky which we purchased at our fall sale from Sanmar Simmentals, who has grown into a great looking female while nursing this calf.

Full ownership and walking rights. Bar 5 would retain the right to collect 200 straws at the owner’s convenience. Eligible for the Circle 3 catalogue. Circle 3 will pay for drawing, advertising and distribution for ½ the semen income received if the owner wishes.BW 85 HIP HT 50 FAT 7

This homozygous polled bull will be a great addition to your herd. Lots of scrotal, good carcass numbers and light birth weight with a whopping 1438 lbs. yearling weight. His sire Polled Pharo produced some of our outstanding polled bulls. Consistency comes with this pedigree. Smooth PP bull with all the tools to make a great herd sire. Solid dark red colour with pigmentation makes him eye appealing as well. Good disposition comes with all polled Pharo calves. Make sure you mark him down as a contender.

Here’s a real interesting pedigree, a Polled calf Sired by Bar 5 Eltorro 814S who is Sired by Expert with the Dam RU-DEV CARAMIA who we were only able to flush once in the short time we owned her in South Africa and out of a real good female we bought from Gibbons Farms sired by the Piona bull that they have done so well with. He has a very nice profile with excellent colouring, good carcass values and right where you want to be with the fat cover.

One of those good Evolution calves Polled and really put together well. The dam’s side is a Zegna heifer that we bought from Gagnon Farms who is doing a good job for us. The numbers look real good with low birth weight and carcass numbers right where you want to be on back fat with an extraordinary large rib eye and certainly a big enough tool box to do the job. BIO calculates a number in dollars that the bull can earn for you over its life time. We don’t print it because I think the environment plays too big a role but the only calf on test with a higher number is another Evolution son.

One of the bulls that I liked since birth, he is double bred Polled and tested Heterozygous Polled, deep body, good hipped and smooth top with the disposition you would like to see in a bull. Good middle of the road frame with a good sized rib eye. The colouring is right and he should be the kind of bull that adds to your genetic base and makes you money.

Yes, he’s young but he’s really good; we have 4 calves born in April that we put in the Sale because, even though they may be too young to breed a large number of cows this year, they will darn sure make you money in the future. He’s Polled and almost solid red. He is sired by a bull that we have and really like, Bar 5 Malo 419T, out of a Polled cow Gibby’s Roseanne 9R that Roy bought a few years ago and that has proven to be very productive.

Here you have a performance bull with all the right numbers going back in his pedigree to Emil, one of the great female producers. On the dam side, 9205x goes back to one of the first Bar 5 SA Bulls that made a name for himself - the world renowned Pioneer. Mid-January born this guy will go out and settle some cows. Lots of scrotal and good carcass data.

In real life and on paper, this is a well balanced bull. This polled full blood bull has a very solid pedigree with Sanmar Polled Pharo and Bar 5 Paymaster backing him up. Eye appeal and maturity sets this bull apart. Carcass information shows you that this guy hit the bullseye with enough back fat, good marbling and sufficient rib eye.

An impressive small polled easy calving bull. He is easy to look at with good numbers to go along with the low birth weight including performance, large rib eye, good carcass values and very adequate scrotal measurements. This will be the kind of bull that should draw attention on sale day.

A bull with great numbers and an even better pedigree. Gibby’s Real Deal has really made an impact on our cows with great pigmentation, lots of body length and amazing carcass information. On the dam side, we are going back to the great PHSF Frontrunner who left some awesome females. Enough scrotal on this bull to go out and work.

One of the first Grinalta’s HP King Sons we have seen and we are very impressed. A great looking calf out of Miju x Peppi that we bought from Bar 5. His performance is also impressive with a 4.04 ADG, large rib eye and plenty of scrotal. If you are serious about polled, you should have a look at this one.

A young polled bull that is impressive to look at but more importantly has very good numbers with an ADG of 4.17 lbs., an adequate rib eye with excellent carcass values and scrotal measurements. The full body solid red colour doesn’t hurt him either. This would be an excellent polled bull to put into almost anyone’s program.

One of the bulls out of our show string, we wanted a younger bull in the string and he was our pick. Sired by one of our easiest calving bulls, Bar 5 Pfidelity out of 432P a Gold X Lana female that we really like a lot. Unfortunately at press time he was too young to have all his BIO testing done including the ultrasounding, but we would hope to have his performance numbers updated for sale day.

An April calf that is sired by our calving ease bull Bar 5 Pfidelity out of PHS Silky who we bought from Prospect Hill a few years ago and has performed very well for us. Solid colour, everything right but his age. The good news is he will get older. He may not breed too many this year, but he has a lot of potential for any buyer.

Here’s another Polled late April bull calf only in the sale because we really believe in his potential. Sired by Evolution out of a Casa Branca Female Bar 5 Ethel 426P. Polled 100% South African genetics is much sought after and here it is in a very red painted complete package.

A young well structured, smooth shouldered and well coloured bull sired by RPF Pol Right Direction out of a RPF First Choice female going back to 803M one of Roy`s foundation cows, now one of Andreas foundation cows. The bull carries a good top line with plenty of rib and quarter as well as excellent carcass values

A big rugged bull sired by Bar 5 Vuurslag 420K (we are out of semen) and a 415L daughter which should be a great combination. If you are looking for a little more frame to cross with your thicker cows this guy should do the job.

Another RPF Pol Right Direction son who is performing well, great colour which he carries right down to the hooves which are dark coloured. Great depth of body with a good hind quarter, low frame, good fat cover with very adequate rib eye and scrotal measurement. Have a look at the Dam’s Sire the great IGLHOFF. (I wonder what his semen is worth, if you could find any.)

This is a perfect combination of calving ease, performance and excellent carcass data. Coming out of a really great productive cow that has given us some awesome bulls. Long and thick, this well muscled bull strides out well and has a good wide base. Power on the Dam side and strength, calving ease on the Sire side. Top 10% for CE and Top 15% of BW, and top 4% for milk, with 1420 lbs. at EOT. This guy is going to make you money.

Super eye appeal on this bull. He is smooth, wide, deep and thick, coming out of a really powerful cow. Top 7% on scrotal can put your mind at ease. This guy is going to work. 9216X is a bull that you might want to keep some females back. AWW + milk + AYW + MWWT tells you that this guy is putting $ in your jeans. A solid red purebred sired by our Pfidelity bull out of a Destiny purebred heifer we purchased at one of Todd’s sales. Young but doing well and should be of interest to the purebred producer. Unfortunately, he was too young for ultrasounding or End of Test measurements, so we have less information for you than we would like. However, he too will get older, we do.

Probably one of the more complete bulls with lots of scrotal great carcass numbers and good pigmentation. He walks like a cat with a super disposition. Solid markings make him very eye appealing. Thick, deep, long, and smooth. Going back to the great Faline cow family in the bottom and Bar 5’s flagship 409M on the top side. If you are in the business of producing Beef, this is the one. He will give you replacement females and produce bulls that can compete with any breeding program. Top 7% for weaning gain and in the top 20% for yearling gain. This guy is a contender.

His Maternal grandmother is an elite dam and his maternal sister is owned by the Munro family of Tiverton, On. She was shown quite successfully at the RAWF in 2008. She was the reserve senior champion junior yearling in the Red Angus show. His full brother BBP 4 was sold at the RAWF sale in 2009 to LLB Angus in Alberta where he was then selected for the breeding program for Gilberto Garcia of Mexico. So you can see the pedigree and numbers tell the story on this family and this individual is on his way to following in the family footsteps and make his mark in the beef industry.

A good solid meat machine out of the Bar 5 Warehouse bull and a Brylor Stallion 46M daughter. He is small framed with good carcass values and together with smaller framed females he should produce some very interesting progeny.

Here is a young AR bull that is just starting to come into himself. Going back to the great Branded Beef and Master Plan on the dam side. This smooth thick female producing bull is definitely worth a second look. Great carcass info and pedigree make a winning combination. Calving ease, performance, use him on your AR heifers for a worry free calving season or put him on your Simmental cows to produce those sought after half sired heifers and bulls. Win – Win situation here.

A very young bull that isn’t showing his potential. He was barely 10 months old at last weight and picture taking, but he should get older and fill out a little more. For the breeders who are calving in the spring, he should be really suited. Sired by Thrill out of the very productive Bar 5 AR Morning 2310S who moved her calving interval up by 6 weeks this year.

We still like the progeny from our Branded Beef bull and here is a grandson out of a Moose Creek Dam that we purchased from Brylor Ranch. A small framed easy calving bull with good carcass values adds up to an AAA grade calf.

This is one of those fancy heifers who knows she is good and loves to show it. Young but Polled and look at her low birth weight and performance. These Evolution calves are good and this is another one, it’s not a coincidence where she is being placed in the catalogue, because we really like her. She could very well be the foundation female for almost any polled herd.

Unfortunately she was too young for a complete assessment by BIO at press time, but everything is pointing in the right direction.

A beautiful Real Deal heifer that will grow into a great cow. Polled, thick, smooth with great disposition. Solid colour with great muscling. Solid carcass numbers across the board, top 4% in maternal weaning weight and milk and a super pedigree on top of that. Always have to part with a good one!! Give her a second look on sale day.

We followed up with another Evolution polled heifer, out of an Anchor T Legend female. This heifer does not quite have the performance of lot 35, she does have eye appeal and plenty of growth to do a good job. Her carcasses measurement also add to her chances of being a valuable female in you herd.

A very smooth well developed heifer for her young age. Well muscled with a strong back. Lots of capacity and loose hide. Structurally she is very correct. She walks out well and has a great hip structure. Sired by the Gong bull will tell you that she is going to be a great moma cow with good carcass qualities. Her carcass data that will be available on sale day will definitely add to this complete polled package.

Here is a heifer starting up the catalogue horned section of the females that is full of red meat, low birth weight, low frame, good rib eye with good carcass scores. She has been a favourite around here for some time and I hope she finds a good home from someone who can use a front pasture female and doesn`t mind the money that she will make in the future.

A heifer sired by the immortal Bar 5 Mr. Optimal 447L out of an Expert Dam while she is not hard on the eyes she has a low birth weight, good performance and excellent carcass values. She should be ready to breed for an early January calf and should be one of those females that you will have in the herd for a long time.

Complete with a low birth weight, small frame and good carcass values.

We know what 415L can do and here is a heifer sired by him out of a First Choice daughter. 415L semen is very limited. Therefore, there will be very few progeny in the future, so it`s a one off chance to acquire a 415L daughter that can be the foundation of your breeding program.

Complete with a low birth weight, small frame and good carcass values.

Another real soggy, thick heifer that is easy on the eyes that brings a great deal to the table in that she has a very solid performance, enough fat cover and real good rib eye size. We purchased the Bar 5 Hemisphere dam from Gibbons Farms bred to DDD Broadway, and we certainly like the result. This should be a heifer we retain but we have to keep selling the good ones.

Here is a unique individual, a purebred heifer sired by Morris a South African purebred out of Congosim Dolly, that we own in our South African herd and that we have had some exceptional progeny from. Almost everything is good about this female. Birth weight, performance, fat cover, rib eye area and great carcass values and as you can see a great profile. We are keeping a full sister who is almost as good.

A very young stylish heifer with superb performance with a weight of 874 lbs at 8 months of age which should tap her out at about 1200 lbs on her birthday. Although young, she is big enough to breed. It is not only performance; she is very stylish with lots of rib and excellent body shape. Sired by Bar 5 Magic 830T another Miju x Gezmi son that we used for a couple of years but we had 3 of them so we sold him to Hurley Simmentals.

Here is a real special heifer to start off the Angus section. Sired by the exciting LMP 18T Thrill bull out of a great female we got from Leachman Cattle Co. Red LCC Cyclone NAA471. A super sweet Prestige daughter out of a LLB 2 year old. This almost April heifer is showing some real promise. Super structure and disposition. 8203x will turn into a show prospect and moma cow. Have an extra look at this structurally, sound well walking heifer. With her light birth weight and good rate of gain she can hold her own in the herd.

Sired by the $85,000 Red Brylor Big Rock 85T bull out of the MVA 72H female we bought at Red Round Up a few years ago who has worked well for us. It was not too hard to pick out this heifer from the red Angus female group when selecting for the sale.

As usual we decided to put in a couple of Flushes from cows who have worked very well in our embryo program and allowed us to export a number of embryos from each of these cows to our Brazilian program. We plan on one more flush for the buyer’s and then we will put them in calf for a couple of years before thinking of flushing again.

Flush at Seller’s expense with access to any Bar 5 or Zurita Bull at no cost to the buyer. Semen and shipping of semen on bulls other than Bar 5 is at the Buyer’s expense. The Flush is to be done at the Bar 5 facility and will be completed before April 30, 2010. Buyer owns compete Flush, with a guarantee of at least 6 embryos. Arrangements can be made to implant fresh into Bar 5 Recips if desired. Pregnant 90 day Recips would cost $1,500.00.
