  • A “Note” from the KHCC Music Department

NOBODY KNOWS THE TROUBLE I’VE SEEN Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, opened its doors in 1866; at the close of the Civil War. It was one of the

schools established for liberated slaves by the American Missionary Association. As students and professors ar-

rived on campus, they found themselves living in abandoned Union Army hospital barracks built on the site of old

    slave pens.

Among the arriving professors was a New York Yankee, a white man named White. As music instructor, George

White taught his students classical cantatas and patriotic songs, but he was particularly intrigued by the old plan-

tation melodies and slave songs he overheard in the dorms and among the students between classes. White had

trouble coaxing his students to sing him those songs; it seemed a particularly private type of hand-me-down music.

There were no written scores or words--- just plaintive strains passed voice to voice between the generations.

Within a few years, the old buildings at Fisk started rotting. The university found itself in crisis, without even

money to buy food for its four hundred students. Regretfully, the Missionary Association decided to close the

school. When White approached the trustees suggesting a series of fund-raising concerns, the board refused (they

called his scheme “a wild goose chase”). White decided to try it anyway. “I’m depending on God, not you,” he told

    the board.

Selecting nine students (most of them former slaves), White and his wife sold their jewelry and personal belongings

to finance the first tour. On October 6, 1871, the singers boarded a train in Nashville for the Midwest. It was a

hard trip, and at times the young people had to relinquish their seats to white folks. Other times they were evicted

from trains or hotels. Sometimes the little group, braving threats, insults, obscenities, and indignities, sang in

    empty halls and churches.

At the National Council of Congregational Churches meeting in Oberlin, Ohio, some of the delegates protested giv-

ing time to the “colored students from Fisk University.” The problem was the pressing nature of demoninational

business. Their slate was full, and the delegates didn’t want interruptions in their business sessions. But George

White wouldn’t be denied, and finally the Fisk students sang one song during a recess as the delegates were milling

around in little groups and leaving the building.

What happened next changed the course of American music.

(Continued in the story for next week!)

Dear Operation Support Our Troops Volunteers:

Just a reminder that we will be packing Halloween boxes for our

troops deployed in remote areas of Afghanistan this coming

    Saturday on September 22nd.

Please do what you can to spread the word. I'm concerned we

won't have much to pack since I've lost most of the previous email

    address book.

Those of you that check our drop-off locations, please continue to

do so on a regular basis over the next two weeks. If you can get

stuff to the OSOT rm, I have a Girl Scout leader continuing to

check for small hygiene stuff so her girls can sort those items for

    us before packing day.

Also, if you plan to come help pack, please grab a couple of packs

of Halloween treat bags at local Dollar Tree stores. That way, if

we get large bags of candy, we can make individual packs for the

    soldiers.

Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Saturday,

Sept.22. I could use a couple of men to help me set up the hygiene

room and tables in the hallway by 9:30 that morning. We'll start

sorting at 10. Would love to have some Girl Scouts on hand from

    10-2 to help sort candy/other items...Thanks

On behalf of our troops, thanks for your continued support,

Shirley Olivieri-Mathies, Chairman (and proud Army Mom)
