Dear Shamrock Community,
Despite the unusually cold temperatures, flu and icy days,
IWHS students continue to display their excellence in
academics, sports, technology, and service. In January, we
celebrated our students honor roll successes and PSAT
achievements and hosted a Robotics tournament. We also
continue to celebrate our athletes whose good sportsmanship,
camaraderie and determination are revealed on the court and
on the field.
In the coming months, our students will have many
opportunities available to them. We are very excited about
offering the SAT free to all our Juniors in March. We look forward to welcoming our
new Class of 2022 and wearing our Red Dresses and eating our Candy Grams before
Lent. Our students are engaged in community life, clubs, and organizations and truly
make this campus a joyful place to be. Of course, all of these activities would not
materialize without the guidance of our amazing faculty.
Have a Blessed New Year,
Principal Jennifer Salazar

IWHS SAT 11th Grade Test Day
On Wednesday, March 7, 2018, our Junior students will take the SAT for free. IWHS
will register all students and pay the required fees for this exam. In order to prepare

from her advisory teacher on February 21. In this guide, students will be provided
excellent resources such as test information, test taking advice, and testing tips.
The SAT (with the essay) is a global test accepted by all U.S and many international
colleges and universities. By taking this exam, students’ will be able to apply for early
admission and/or an opportunity to improve their scores before applying for regular
admission.
On exam day, students should arrive on time to school and have two #2 pencils (No
mechanical pencils) and calculators (if applicable).

Robotics League Championship Tournament
O n Jan. 26-27, IWHS Robotics hosted
the Hill Country League's First Tech
Challenge Robotic League City
Championship with 35 teams registered.
Participating in the Hill Country
competition, the Shambots and Shambots
2.0 teams did an amazing job.
During regular game play, the teams
finished 2nd and 3rd for the entire season,
and then chose to team up
together as an alliance in the
Semi-finals and Finals. They
swept the competition on the
field in the Semi-Finals and
Finals, which are best 2-out-
of-3 matches. And that was
only the beginning. Team
5714, The Shambots, won
the award for programming.
Team 8627, The Shambots
2.0, won the Inspire
Award (top award presented)
and Team 5714 placed 3rd in
that category.
Inspire winners automatically advance to
the next level regardless of field
performance; however, as they were the
winning alliance, both teams qualified to
advance. Regionals, the Robotics
equivalent of State competition, takes place
in Austin February 16 –17.
Good Luck, Ladies
and Way to Shine, Shambots!!
Isabel Contreras signed her letter of intent to play basketball
at Denison University on Jan. 22.
Lauren Parker signed with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on
Jan. 22.

Go Red for Heart Awareness
W hat is it that you need to let go of in
order to be the amazing person God
has called you to be? This is the question
posed by Fr. Pat O’Brian who conducted
the Mass on Jan. 2. He said that God does
not call us to play small: “We are too much
afraid of what other people will think.
We’re too much afraid of being wrong.
We’re too much afraid that maybe who we
are is not what other people want.” These
feelings deliver the wrong message - that
God made a mistake - that he made
something that other people don’t like. “If
other people don’t like us,” said Fr. Pat,
“the fault is with them. Each of us is
created with a divine imprint to develop
into what God wants us to be. . . As we
start this year let’s look at the ways we
have been playing small.” He asked the
girls to make a commitment to play big in
at least one part of their lives - to use the
gifts that God has given them to the best of
their ability.
I WHS joins The American Heart
Association’s Go Red For Women
Movement to help raise awareness and
save more lives. From Jan. 29 - Feb. 13,
the Ambassadors will be collecting
donations and distributing information to
help prevent heart disease. The campaign
culminates on Feb. 13 with several events
during the school day. There will be a
guest speaker from the American Heart
Association during Activity period. A
member of the UIW Nurse Faculty will
conduct a Health Clinic during the lunch
mods and the basketball team will hold a
Hoops for Hearts session during mods 16-
17, taking pledges for successful shots.
Also, IWHS will fly the Go Red Flag on
our flag pole below the Texas flag. Wear
Red on Feb. 13!
Lenten Project
T his year for IWHS’s Lenten project, we
will be assisting SAMM Ministries in
supplying much-needed items for the
homeless and for those who struggle for
the very basics of life's necessities.
Beginning February 14 (Ash Wednesday),
we will be requesting the following items
from Administration, Faculty, Staff and
students.
Freshmen and Administration - Socks
for men, women, & children (you do
not have to buy all three)
Sophomores and Faculty - Toothpaste
and toothbrushes for adults and
children
Juniors and Staff - women's deodorant
(they have enough men’s deodorant)
Seniors - bath soap and shampoo for
both men and women
The drive will run through Thursday,
March 1 and the students will turn in their
donations to their respective religion
teacher. Please encourage your students to
participate and remind them often of the
need that is out there in our very own
community.

Athletics
Dominion Winter Classic Tennis Invitational
T he IWHS Varsity Team had a
successful day at the Dominion
Tournament on Jan. 25, playing in icy
temperatures against extremely strong
players. In singles, Elina Osherow
obliterated her opponents, winning all
four matches and dropping only
eight games total on her way to the finals.
Unfortunately, the tournament was rained
out Saturday, so she did not get to play
her final match. Also in singles, Natalia
Camacho lost two tough matches,
but played excellent tennis and showed
that she's great at singles even though
she'd rather play doubles - her “sacrifice”
was much appreciated.
Avelina Petri and Genevieve Fleming
played with skill and precision, working
together like magic and winning all their
matches until the semifinals, where they
eventually lost a very close match. Monica
Hinojosa and Catalina Lopez also did very
well, playing many close games and killing
it at the net, but ultimately losing both
their matches.
Thank you also to our super team
managers, Zulema Avila and Tara
McLoughlin, who, in spite of almost
freezing to death, supported our players
through an incredibly long day of tennis
with their unrelenting positive attitude
and awesome team spirit.
JV Tennis The JV tennis team
played a very successful
tournament on Jan. 18.
Sianna Ayala came in
second place overall in
singles, and doubles team
Sophia Hall/Andrea
Gonzalez won consolation.
Emily Davis and Katherine
Kennedy played some
excellent singles, while
doubles team Hayden
Colson/Alyssa Tarin also
played very well!
The varsity tournament
Friday was canceled due to
rain, but before that,
Avelina Petri won a singles
match and Natasha Diaz-
Escobar/Natalia Camacho
won a doubles match.

Dear Parents, Students, and all others who
support our school in so many different
ways,
Registration for next year’s CloseUp trip
begins in February. This is our annual trip
to Washington, DC, and Williamsburg, Va.
If you register before the end of May, the
price of the trip is $1892 and may be paid in
installments. This price includes air fare, 3
meals a day, theatre tickets, hotels in
Washington and Williamsburg, all fees and
tips, and transportation including metro
tickets. It is a deal! Adults are invited as
well (although the adults have their own
bus so we are not always with the students).
Since we do not always do the same things
as the students, the adult trip is a little
more expensive — $2242.
I have gone on this wonderful trip for 25
years, and every year is exciting and
different. The students return energized by
being in DC and meeting over 250 kids from
around the world. We usually meet students
from Utah, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, and
California, with other states thrown in from
time to time. There are usually 6-7 different
states represented during this week. This
year the trip is from Nov. 24 – Dec. 1, 2018.
It is less expensive than spring time, MUCH
LESS crowded, and we can get in to see
everything we want to see.
CloseUp meets us at the airport and takes
us to our hotel where we check in. I try to
take the students to see some sights like the
White House and Smithsonians, just so they
can feel that they are in DC! CloseUp feeds
us that night and the next morning. On
Sunday we are on our own and I take the
girls to see George Washington’s home, Mt.
Vernon in Alexandria, Va. Via the metro
and busses. We have to buy our own lunch
that day. Then that night the girls are
officially on the program, and CloseUp
keeps tabs on them. The girls are part of
large and small groups to help keep track of
everyone. (Haven’t lost a kid so far!!)
CloseUp has security on each floor each
night including in Williamsburg for safety
reasons. St. Anthony’s will be joining us this
same week in November.
Please contact me with any questions or
contact CloseUp at www.closeup.org. Log in
on the Washington, Williamsburg trip to see
sample schedules, etc.

Dear Shamrock Community,
IWHS had another successful Catholic Schools Week. The theme “Communities of
Faith, Knowledge and Service” is practiced every day among the administration,
faculty and staff, and modeled by our girls. On Tuesday, Jan 31 Student Spirit
committee provided cupcakes for our girls during lunch mods for Student Appreciation
Day, showing how much we appreciate and love them. Catholic Schools Week is such a
fun and busy week. A huge Shamrock Shout Out to all who made this week a success.
I would like to extend a Thank You to the PTO members that are attending the
Khaki and Plaid Gala hosted by Hope for the Future to raise funds for families unable
to afford the cost of Catholic education. It is a great event for fun and fellowship with
other Catholic Communities.
Mother Daughter Committee has been working on a beautiful event this Saturday
February 4. This is a special tradition that PTO hosts every year and is such a great
way to spend your Sunday with other families in our community.
Finally PTO is committed to a “Community of Service” and through our “Time ,
Talent and Treasure” we are a “Community of Faith.” Thank you again for all you do!
