Traditionalists often insist thatdevices that measure distance by counting tire rotations aresuperior to contemporary GPS receivers that compute distance based on electronic signals fromorbitingsatellites.
So, let’s do some back-of-the-envelope computations to seehowmeasurementsbyGPSmightcomparetomeasurementsbytirerotation.
We know that at 60 miles per hour a car will travel 88 feet inone second and at 30 miles per hour a car will travel 44 feet in onesecond.Ifameasuringdevicerecords distance by computingthe time between each rotationof a tire, we need to know thecircumference of an automobile tire to knowhow far the carwilltravelwitheachrotation.
Thefronttiresofmyrallycarare225/40/R18andthereartiresare295/30/R18. The circumferencesare 78.8 inches and 78.4 inchesrespectively,or6.566 feet, whichI’ll round up to 6.6 feet just tokeepthemathabitmoresimple.
GPS receivers measure distance by comparing successive three-dimensional points on the planet derived from between 2 to 20 simultaneous satellite signals(somedevicesreceivebothUSandRussiansatellitesignals).
If for example, a GPS receivercomputes distance once every second, we would expect thata car traveling at 60 mph wouldrecord a distance of 88 eachtime the GPS receiver updated
its distance measurement. Bycontrast, a devicemeasuring tirerotations would have produced13.3 estimates of 6.6 feet eachin the same one-second intervalusingthetiresusedinourexample.At30mph,therewouldhavebeen6.7estimatesof6.6feeteach.
This would seem to be a hugemeasurement advantage in favorof the tire rotation recordingdevice.
But, what if the GPS receivercomputed distances more frequently. For example, theDual 150 computes at a rate offour times per second (from USsatellites only) and the Dual 160model computes at a rate of 10 times per second (from both USandRussiansatellites).Withthesedevices, the advantage of thetire rotation recording device islessened or lost depending uponthespeedoftravel.
But,there’smore!!
What if we used software toestimate the distance traveledbetween signals from the GPSreceivers that also report the speedatthesametimedistanceisreported?
InsteadofrelyingonGPSdistancemeasurements every second, orfourtimesasecond, ortentimesa second, we could estimatedistance at almost any timeintervalwewouldlike.
In all ofmyGPS-based rally appsincludingmynewest, theGPSRallyComputer (aka SRC), I estimatedistance every 0.06 seconds or
Improving Accuracy of GPS Measurements with Softwareby Mike Young, MSYapps.com
nearly 17 times per second. So,at 60 mph, my apps estimatedistance in 5.3-foot increments,whichisequivalenttoonceevery8/10thsofatirecircumference.
At 30 mph, the estimationalgorithm produces 2.6-footincrements, which is equivalentto once every 4/10ths of a tirerotation.
While some might quibblewith the idea that estimatingdistance between GPS signals isless accurate than estimating adistancebetweentire rotations, Isuggestthattheaccuracycouldbeset at any desired level with either device. So, when all is said anddone, the arguments about theaccuracyofwheel-based systemsvs.GPSareadistinctionwithoutadifference.
