1 Volume 48 DECEMBER 2017 Message from SK Dear L&T Geo-ites, Wish you all a merry Christmas and prosperous 2018! We have reached the end of 2017… it shows that time moves very fast and we have to match the same to achieve our goals. Of course, the journey will never come to an end, but the goalpost will be shifted to continue our journey and enhance the growth, both in the business and personal front. It is our duty to introspect and bring out the achievements and misses in the year gone by. You may be thinking that the contributions and achievements made by you are minor in nature! But the spark you have ignited has tremendous repurcussions for the future. To highlight few achievements, you have initiated new ideas using geospatial technologies for driving marine piles, used digitalisation for acquiring and modernising critical equipment, developed expertise in the area of navigational lock business, formed and acquired critical mass in the area of LNG EPC projects, established as leaders in providing and executing river linking using high-end technologies, moved considerably in the area of Building Information Modelling, and gained many more confidential expertise in the kitty of Geo. This gives a enormous sense of pride, and hope for a sustainable future. Having mentioned highs which were accomplished in the shortest possible time, it is also must to remember our misses. The cost-sensitivity and influencing power seems to be the order of the day, which has brought in competitors who have edged out a portion of our pie. We cannot take things lightly in this front, and as a matter of learning, we have evolved a system to mitigate our risk, which I feel will reap benefits in the days to come. One thing is common that achievements and misses are great learnings and taken as innovation to further sharpen our position to achieve required growth. So once again, wish you and your family a very happy and prosperous 2018! Warm regards, S. Kanappan.

Message from

SKDear L&T Geo-ites,

Wish you all a merry Christmas and prosperous 2018!

Warm regards,

S. Kanappan.

India’s urbanisation and infrastructure development over last two decades has been unprecedented in history. In no time, cities have grown resulting in dense population, congestion in living and heavy traffic due to usage of personal vehicles. To control the heavy traffic and to reduce the carbon foot print, government has taken initiative to encourage public transportation which can protect environment. Metro Rail at Chennai is one of the initiatives and it is proposed in a big scale to connect the major city routes. In this Government endeavor, L&T GeoStructure is also part of construction of Underground stations by installing diaphragm wall for stations. Though L&T GeoStructure constructed diaphragm wall for under ground stations for other contractors earlier, during 2015 & 2016 CMRL has awarded direct contract to L&T GeoStructure to execute

diaphragm wall for Entry / Exit structures at CMRL package UAA-02. This contract was awarded to L&T GeoStructure inorder to complete the balance diaphragm wall works at Entry / Exit structures of UAA-02 package wherein the main contractor for the job was terminated in the year 2015. L&T GeoStructure responded to CMRL, mobilized the resources and initiated the diaphragm wall construction.

As per the saying goes, “Engineering is overcoming all challenges, facing it head on and coming out successful”. L&T GeoStructure CMRL package UAA-02 was no exception to this. Situated at arterial road (Mount Road) of Chennai, it was never an easy task to perform diaphragm wall activities wherein the area provided for construction works were limited, and at any point of time the public traffic movement was adjacent to our construction activities. Whether it is lifting of stop end, reinforcement cage or any other heavy/longer

sections, necessary lifting plan was prepared and implemented at site. Maintaining quality and safety was our paramount goal and L&T GeoStructure took all measures to ensure the same with no compromise.

L&T GeoStructure was always on constant endeavor to introduce new trends and methods like selection of drilling fluid to phase out conventional methods. As such initiative was introduction of Polymer as drilling fluid inplace of bentonite slurry. L&T GeoStructure took all measures in planning the diversion of utilities in the alignment of diaphragm wall construction and also to ensure the stability of the Heritage buildings in the vicinity.

The restriction in concreting the diaphragm wall panels only during the night time due to heavy traffic conditions, objections by traffic team in the day time, and several other interventions, made achieving progress as per schedule, a herculean task. Our engi-neers in the night would even go to the extent of patrolling in the roads to get our concrete millers inside the site. The execution team in the day time made sure the trenching operation and cage lowering operation is completed so as to carry out concreting alone in the night time.

After having completed two entry structures at LIC station we moved down to thousand lights station, where a much higher degree of difficulty awaited us, which is of executing the diaphragm walls very close adjacent buildings (minimum is of 1m from diaphragm wall axis). With precise control over trenching execution was made safe.

The project, though a challenging one in all respect, was immensely satisfying, because it was all about engineering and executing it to perfection.

“Digitalization Initiatives in L&T GeoStructure”Greatness is not where we stand, but in what direction we are moving….Oliver Wendell Holmes

The word Digital is the buzz across the world, every sector is exploring innovative ways to improve the business by transforming itself into

Digital platform. The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that the world will need to spend $57 trillion on infrastructure by 2030 to keep

up with global GDP growth. This is a massive incentive for players in the construction industry to identify solutions to transform productivity

and project delivery through new technologies and improved practices.

Various digital initiatives are being developed and implemented in L&T Construction to keep pace with the fast digital transformation

happening around. To orient the staff in L&T GeoStructure on digitalisation an awareness programme on new digital initiative was organised

at HQ Chennai on 24 November 2017 for all HQ based staff. The session focused on impact of digitalisation on process improvement and

thus increase in productivity and performance.

The programme was attended by 34 staff based at Chennai. Mr. Bino Mathew Jose – Head HR, L&T GeoStructure shared with the

participants on the journey of digitalisation in L&T Construction, the management’s future plan and also urged all participants to think

and come out with ideas in their own area of work for better performance. The faculty for the session, Mr. Krishna Karteek V (Digital

Officer – L&T GeoStructure) took participants through the digital solutions implemented in L&T GeoStructure so far in the areas of:

• P&M Monitoring and Tracking • Project Monitoring and Control • Workmen Availability • Safety and Optimization • Survey

• Engineering & Design • Data Warehouse and Analytics • Material Tracking and Optimization • Customer Interactions

• Employee Involvement and Engagement

Mr. Krishna also showed live demo of workmen mobilization app, small tool tracking, conveyance vehicle tracking, P&M hired equipment

tracking, Batching plant integration, Logistics monitoring, online DPR/ Procube, P&M own equipment tracking & Aadhar, Bank account,

Biometric etc.

This is just a beginning and we will witness a huge transformation in L&T in the field of digitalisation.

CM’s Visit to Polavaram Site on 11 December 2017

Visitor safety at CoW, Polavaram Project

Introduction: CoW Polavaram is a showcase project in Andhra Pradesh, for construction of very deep cut-off wall for the Polavaram dam. The project being unique in nature, many government officials visit the site frequently – including the Hon’ble Chief Minister of A.P., Cabinet ministers, Government officials, school and college students. It is our priority to ensure safety of visitors. In this context, several precautions were taken like providing safe access, restricted entry at prime work points, providing isolated visitor view area etc.

Approach for the access road: The road connecting our batching plant and working platform is quite long and it is a single unrestricted roadway. Movement of our own transit mixer, tippers, clients’ heavy dumpers and other vehicles takes place. It is risky during night time, since proper lighting throughout the length of the road is a challenge. In order to mitigate this risk, we installed site-made reflector posts of height 1500 mm each, all long the 1 km stretch. The pole base is cast in concrete, making it moveable. Each reflector is kept at a distance of 15m from each other, for the length of 1km. This reflector is very

Reflector pole along the access road

Check post at CH 600

useful in guiding the vehicle at night time, clearly demarcating road boundaries, thereby aiding safe manoeuvring of vehicle by the driver. Restricting site access: Our site has three entries at chainages CH 800, CH 600 and CH 450. To regulate entries through these access points, and to restrict unauthorised entry, security posts have been installed in CH 800 & CH 600 points. The approach road at CH 600 is used for entry of conveyance vehicles and government officials’ visits. The approach road at CH 800 will be used for the movement of transit mixer alone, which restricts the entry of other personnel.

Layout of check post and barricading

Cross-overs at various platforms: Most of the pedestrian entries are through the bentonite pipeline area. These pipelines have pressurized bentonite flow and cutter return line with the mix of bentonite and crushed rock. With pressure of more than 20 bar, these lines are extremely dangerous and have the potential to cause serious injury. So prime concern was to avoid any burst or leak of such pipeline, and tripping injury of personnel. To mitigate this risk, cross-overs are placed above the pipelines, at regular intervals.

Cross-over platforms

Barricading at trenching area

PPE for visitors

Cross-over platforms

Walkway jaali over guide wall

Barricading the bentonite tanks: Visitors are keen to visit every part of our site, and our desander plant has more than 5000 cum of stored bentonite (fresh cum waste bentonite). To avoid not only the visitors, but also our workmen and staff from falling into the pit, it is fully barricaded. Edges of the pit are raised by 2 inches from the ground to act as toe-guard. Life-saving equipment are also kept in the barricaded area, in case of emergency.

Barricading the trenching and guide wall area and their access to work: Any visitor (or) vehicle movement near the excavated area is hazardous. To avoid this, entire area is barricaded once the excavation is started. Working in the excavated area for guide wall reinforcement and concreting also has its own hazards. The workmen can fall from a 1.5 m height, and safety belt also cannot be used, as there is no anchor point. We use walkway jaali, as it provides a firm working access. It can be shifted to different places as required. To avoid the entry of visitors near the trench area,

the area is hard barricaded along the length, and soft barricaded along the breadth. This, with the help of safety sign board, is used to control the visitors. In situations where the trenching workmen (or) foreman have to go near the trench pit, they wear lifejacket along with their PPEs.

PPE zone vs non-PPE zone: Entry of any personnel without proper PPE is restricted in PPE zone. In the contrary, non-PPE zone is an area where no site work is carried out, and visitors are allowed here. Examples of such places are canteen, visitors viewpoint etc. Beyond PPE zone, no person is allowed to enter without proper PPE, and even visitors are given proper PPE on returnable basis.

Conclusion: Apart from safety of staff and workmen, providing safe access and restriction at certain point bring safety to visitors too. In turn, this helps in managing huge crowd during major visits and reduces the number of entrants into the site. Safe access also reduces incidents.

Life has really some mysterious ways to prove you wrong… the same happened to me as well. Exactly 6 months ago when I stepped to

this world of knowledge my perception regarding L&T was different from the way I feel now. I thought it was a place where you have to

struggle to survive but I was not right. Though I have to work hard, the work is enjoyable and I have learnt a lot throughout the process.

Indeed L&T is an ocean of knowledge; it is that chapter of the book which will make you excel.

The last 6 months have been a roller coaster ride for me full of thrills, excitement, emotions and adventures. Each day is a new day for me

where I get to learn something new. Not only you get to learn about technical aspects but L&T also gives you the opportunity to learn how

to fit yourself best in the corporate world. Coming as a novice (bookish knowledge was all I had initially), L&T earns all the credit to make

me who I am today. I am not saying I have learnt everything, but at least now, I know how to communicate with clients, workers and many

other persons related to this field.

My exciting journey in L&T Geostructure started with two days of common orientation followed by ten days of IC orientation. Common

orientation gave us the opportunity to meet all the senior officials of L&T who shared their experiences and invited us to be a part of L&T

family. Next to this common orientation, L&T Geostructure’s detailed orientation program was held where we were fortunate to meet senior

officials of our IC. This orientation gave us valuable insight, into and encouraged us to believe that we really have a great future here.

Finally the best part in L&T came when I was posted to Paradip, Odisha site where we have to build an iron ore berth for JSW. Initially I was

in Quality department which was followed by EHS, P&M and planning department. This department wise training program allows us to

know more about each department related to this field. From the very first day I find the staff here in Paradip very helpful… specially, the

seniors gave us a rope to explore and help us to learn from our mistakes.

If I keep writing, it will be a never ending story, since I have many things to share about my experience in L&T. Last but not the least, life in

L&T so far has been very enjoyable and crucial for me which I will cherish all my life.
