Retired NYPD detective, loving husband, father and grandfather Richie Commesso was born June 23, 1943, in Manhattan. Passed away April 29, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19. He married his high school sweetheart, Irene Commesso (Dahlman), in 1965. Together they raised two devoted daughters, Debbie (Jesse) and Susan (Kevin). His grandchil-dren, Olivia, Jesse Lynn, Michael and Christopher were his pride and joy. He is sur-vived by his sister, Joyce Haughom and brother, John. Richie proudly joined the New York Police Department in 1965 and was promoted to detective in 1978. He received the Medal of Valor and the Combat Medal. After retire-ment, he continued to work at various insurance and security companies as an investi-gator and consultant. He was the current President of the Verrazano Chapter of the 10-13 Association, a non-profit organization that works on behalf of active and retired members of the NYPD. Richie was very involved in sports in the Staten Island community for over 40 years. He coached, umpired and refereed for SILL Girls Division, SILL Boys and OLQP CYO basketball league. His experience and expertise led him to officiate at numerous bas-ketball games rising all the way to the NCAA level. He continued to umpire men's soft-ball until last summer at 75 years old. He loved to golf, was a member of the Early Bird Golf Club and an Ambassador at South Shore Golf Course. Richie truly enjoyed watch-ing his grandchildren participate in any sporting event, always supporting them and cheering them on. He enjoyed many vacations with his wife and their best friends.

Donations in his memory can be made to the NYC Verrazano 10-13 Association, P.O. Box 061735 Staten Island, NY 10306.

TAKE A KNEE...

A POWERFUL PIECE WRITTEN BY TED NUGENT

Take a little trip to Valley Forge in January. Hold a musket ball in your Fingers and imagine it piercing your flesh and breaking a bone or two. There won't be a doctor or trainer to assist you until after the battle, so Just wait your turn. Take your cleats and socks off to get a real Experience.

Then, take a knee on the beach in Normandy where man after American man Stormed the beach, even as the one in front of him was shot to pieces, the Very sea stained with American blood. The only blockers most had were the Dead bodies in front of them, riddled with bullets from enemy fire.

Take a knee in the sweat soaked jungles of Vietnam. From Khe Sanh to Saigon, anywhere will do. Americans died in all those jungles. There was no Playbook that told them what was next, but they knew what flag they Represented. When they came home, they were protested as well, and spit on for reasons only cowards know.

Take another knee in the blood drenched sands of Fallujah in 110-degree Heat. Wear your Kevlar helmet and battle dress. Your number won't be Printed on it unless your number is up! You'll need to stay hydrated but There won't be anyone to squirt Gatorade into your mouth. You're on your Own. There are a lot of places to take a knee where Americans have given their Lives all over the world. When you use the banner under which they fought... As a source for your displeasure, you dishonor the memories of those who Bled for the very freedoms you have. That's what the red stripes mean. It Represents the blood of those who spilled a sea of it defending your Liberty.

While you're on your knee, pray for those that came before you, not on a Manicured lawn striped and printed with numbers to announce every inch of Ground taken, but on nameless hills and bloodied beaches and swel-tering Forests and bitter cold mountains, every inch marked by an American life Lost serving that flag you protest.

No cheerleaders, no announcers, no coaches, no fans, just American men and Women, delivering the real fight against those who chose to harm us, blazing a path so you would have the right to "take a knee." You haven't Any inkling of what it took to get you where you are, but your "protest" is Duly noted. Not only is it disgraceful to a nation of real heroes, it Serves the purpose of pointing to your ingratitude for those who chose to Defend you under that banner that will still wave long after your jersey is Retired.

If you really feel the need to take a knee, come with me to church on Sunday and we'll both kneel before Almighty God. We'll thank Him for Preserving this country for as long as He has. We'll beg forgiveness for our Ingratitude for all He has provided us. We'll appeal to Him for Understanding and wisdom. We'll pray for lib-erty and justice for all, because He is the one who provides those things. But there will be no Protest.

There will only be gratitude for His provision and a plea for His Continued grace and mercy on the land of the free and the home of the Brave.

It goes like this, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

TREASURER’S LINES - Christopher J. Piazza

I would like to extend my condolences and deepest sympathies on the passing of Richard Commesso to his loving wife Irene, his daughters Sue and Debbie and the entire Commesso family. Since the time of me accepting the Treasurer position, I recognized that he had bigger plans for me in our Association. I am grate-ful for that trust and confidence he had in me. I hope I can make him proud and make sure his legacy is prop-

erly honored. I looked up to him as a mentor with plenty of life and NYPD experience. I will miss his stories and his sense of humor. May he rest in peace.

Coronavirus: Latest News, Restricted States Based upon Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order 205, issued June 25, 2020, the following states meet the criteria for required quarantine: This is based upon a seven-day rolling average, of positive tests in excess of 10%, or number of positive cases exceeding 10 per 100,000 residents.

RECORDING SECRETARY’S LINES - Paul Gallo

At the last board meeting the board decided to postpone the Atlantic City bus trip. This was at the outbreak of the virus. Better to be safe, than put our members at risk. We were proactive and our decision was at the time correct. We had no idea of the magnitude of this virus. When and only when everything (virus) has past, we will resume our activities. So, until then let’s keep our brother officers on the front lines in our

prayers. Wishing you and your families the best, keep safe until we meet again. The board will need positions filled in December, this does not require a lot of work and new ideas are always encouraged.

A Reflection of my Friendship with Richie Commesso

Richie and I met in our Grammar School Days. The 1950’s. We played Little League Baseball and Babe Ruth League Baseball together. We played All-Star Ball with the SIBRL up in Syracuse NY. Our Fathers were instrumental in starting the original Staten Island Babe Ruth League. Our Parents vacationed together in the Catskills. Richie met Irene when they were 15 years old. We went Horseback riding together. We bought our first new cars around the same time. He bought his Burgundy Red 1962 Chevy. “3 on the tree”. I bought my 1964 Pontiac. We met a fellow from “the other side of the Island” He had a unique Name. “Harpo”. We went into the Police Department around the same Time. Richie wasn’t one to stay at entry level. He got made and retired a Detective. He attended my wedding on April 29, 1967. Fast forward. He joined the Verrazano 10-13 Association. Again, not being one to stay at entry level he got on the Board of Directors, then became President for a ton of years till present. He asked me to become his Corresponding Secretary. He came to my 50th Wedding Anniversary Party on April 29, 2017. Sadly, Richie passed away on April 29, 2020. Rest in Peace, My Friend, Rest in Peace.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S LINES - Vincent Montagna

April Fool’s Day brought some not so funny circumstances. When shopping at Super Markets you will be paying $00.05, five cents for every plastic bag you receive with your groceries. I don’t know what the nickel will do to help the sea Gulls getting tied up in the bag. And who gets the nickel. So, I suggest

bringing a box or two with you just like Costco and BJ’s.

Our Illustrious Mayor, Da Blazz, at the onset of the Chineez Virus, said “if you don’t feel any symptoms go out and enjoy life”. He went to his gym in Park Slope. His Health Commissioner said, “by all means everyone should go to the St Patrick’s Day Parade.” His Bd of Education CZAR said, “leave the schools open”. Well guess what! With these decisions NYC has become the Epicenter of this Chineez Virus. It is now expected that 50% of the City will be affected. Currently the Department “ORDERED” some units to “STAY HOME” work from home do not report to work.

If you can’t get Clorox for disinfectant use Alcohol. I have since finished one bottle of Johnny Walker, Platinum, and half a bottle of B & B (Benedictine and Brandy). Now.... “Take my wife... Please!” What Jewish Comedian used that line in the 1960’s up in the Jewish Alps? She Finished one bottle of Grey Goose Vodka, and is into a bottle of Purity Vodka, and halfway thru a bottle of Vermouth for her Martinis,

At a recent Board of Director’s meeting I proposed our Association donate annually One Thousand thirteen Dollars ($1013.00) to the “Tunnel to the Towers” Foundation. The Board approved. I further presented it to the membership and was unanimously supported. Due to our cancellation of the March meeting the presentation of this donation will be postponed until our October meeting.

TRUSTEE - Paul Ferrigno

With the sudden and unexpected passing of our association president and dear friend, Richie Commesso, I know he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Richie was the backbone of our organization and he presided over it with dignity and integrity. With Richie's passing, Joe Molloy has assumed the duties and responsibilities for the remainder of his term. Knowing

Joe for more than 50 years, I'm sure he has the intellectual capacity and integrity to continue in the same manner. In November, elections will be held for a number of positions on the board, including the Presidency and Vice Presidency. In the meanwhile, I ask that we all keep Richie and his family in our prayers.

On another note, please remember that most members of our association are in the age category where we are the most vulnerable to the Covid-19 (CHINA) Coronavirus. With that in mind, I urge all to continue to do everything possible to protect yourselves and your families. We're not out of the woods yet. Don't take any unnecessary chances thinking that this cannot or will not affect you.

Please follow every precaution. When going outdoors, make sure to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Handle as little as possible. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for a minimum of 20 seconds, especially after handling anything that comes from outside your home, including mail, newspapers, etc. I think you all know the drill by now. The main thing is that you practice it at all times.

We hope and pray this will pass in the not too distant future and then we can reflect and appreciate all the things we have taken for granted, like a simple handshake and a hug from a loved one.

May God Bless and Keep Us All in His CARE

SGT. AT ARMS - Jack Hellman

Well my friends, a lot of water has past under the proverbial bridge since we last met and communicated in the last newsletter. Our world has completely been turned upside-down by this killer (CHINA) Virus. I’m sure everyone has been affected in some way. I personally lost one of my best friends and past president of our organization Richard Commesso. As anyone who knew or had any dealings with him would say he was a fine gentleman and good human

being. I was very close to him and rarely did he have anything bad to say about anyone, with the exception of our mayor and gover-nor.

Richie truly was the glue that held our organization together.

Before he was struck with the virus, I asked him if we could show our local precincts support by donating some food. He wholeheartily approved the idea and with the approval of are Board of Directors we made arrangements with John’s Catering for delivery to each Precinct on Staten Island. This show of sup-port was so successful and appreciated, we will be repeating this in Richie’s name. Our Annual Golf Outings will be held in Richard Commesso’s honor on September 25, 2020. Please help us make this outing a success by attending, sponsoring a hole or buying a 50/50. Henceforth a scholarship In Richies name will be created, the winner to be picked at our Christmas Luncheon.

I end this novel with a heavy heart saying goodbye to my pal, may he rest in peace.

PS: Anyone interested in running for office on our Board of Directors have until October to submit your name to me. Elections are held this November.

TRUSTEE - William “Harpo” Silvestri

Let me begin by conveying my condolences and deep sympathies to Richie Commesso’s wife Irene and fam-ily. I’ve known Richie for as long as I can remember. He was a good friend and I will miss him dearly. Hope this finds you all doing well - With all the information out there regarding the Coronavirus, I attempted

to find something that is somewhat basic and easy to follow. Here it is. Have faith and we will beat this thing. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON THE VIRUS FROM JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL The following is from Irene Ken physician, whose daughter is an Asst. Prof in infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University, quite informative. • The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes their genetic code (mutation) and converts them into aggressor and multiplier cells. • Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies. • The virus is very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam). By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own. • HEAT melts fat; this is why it is so good to use water above 25 degrees Celsius for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful. • Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus. • Any mix with 1-part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside. • Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin. • NO BACTERICIDE OR ANTIBIOTIC SERVES. The virus is not a living organism like bacteria; antibodies cannot kill what is not alive. • NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth. While it is glued to a porous surface, it is very inert and disintegrates only: - between 3 hours (fabric and porous), - 4 hours (copper and wood) - 24 hours (cardboard), - 42 hours (metal) and - 72 hours (plastic). But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours and can lodge in your nose. • The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial as air conditioners in houses and cars. They also need moisture to stay stable, and especially darkness. Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster. • UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein. For example, to disinfect and reuse a mask is perfect. Be careful, it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin. • The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin. • Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat. • NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA, serve. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65%. • LISTERINE IF IT SERVES! It is 65% alcohol. • The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less. • You have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And when using the bathroom. • You have to HUMIDIFY HANDS DRY from so much washing them, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better. • Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there. -JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL

More so if you are driving in a bus lane and there is a bus behind you, the driver can click a button to take a picture of you that will cost $350.00. Notify your family and friends, the city is NOT notifying the public about this.
