In the summer of 2008 while at a car show looking at two Cobras Jim inno-cently (so he says) mentioned to his wife Lori that when he was younger he used to think someday he would get a kit and build one. That year was Jims 60th birth-day and Lori masterminded the acquisi-tion of a Cobra kit and frame….as a sur-prise birthday present with help from car friends. Fast forward and a year after the “present” Jim with the help of friends had pretty much completed the car and it was ready for painting which took 3 more months. So in the photo above you see the final beautifully completed Cobra of Jim and Lori’s sporting a 302/350 motor by Engine Factory mated to a 5 speed Tremec transmission and completing the drivetrain is a Ford 8.8 Tru-Trac rear end.

If you have a copy of the 2012 Snap-On Tools calendar you will find it featured for the month of Feb-ruary. To say that this wonderful car has won many very special awards and trophies is an understatement. The car has I t’s own trophy and award room in the Clarks home in Woodmere Lakes.

Jim and Lori moved to Venice as per-manent residents in 2011 from Fleet-wood, Pennsylvania which is near Red-ding. Jim also had a passion for “dirt track” racing in his younger days and has many plaques attesting to his being a “guest” driver on many of our nations famous raceways while wheeling some very famous and expensive race cars around the ovals.

In 2011 Jim and Lori went to one of Lances Albertson’s shows and Lance told him about our club. Now Gary, our club president who we all sympathize with due to his minor difficulty with hearing “heard” someone 6 car show rows away from him “whispering” about looking for a car club. Jim was whisper-ing to Julie Petree and Gary appeared with club application forms in hand in a flash. Gary has told us that he can read lips across a football field. Anyway Jim and Lori became more of our wonderful members that we already have in our club. He stated that he likes all the varie-ty of things we do and we all appreciate that Jim and Lori and look for many years of good times with you both and that great “Cobra”.

The chrome work alone on Joe and Jessica Marshes 1923 T Bucket probably cost more than some of the show cars we drive. Absolutely awesome and this is just one small area on this breath taking street rod that won it a featured several page article inside the June 1973 issue of ‘HOT RODDING” magazine. Joe always wanted one of these unique vehicles and Joe and Jessica located it on the internet from an estate near Ocala, Florida a few months back. While an older build, the vehicle remains in show condition and Joe has made some minor mechanical changes along with some upgrade detailing. Behind the custom brass radiator resides a small block 1964 Chevy 327 motor joined to a powerglide transmission. The body is fiberglass, which is mounted on a custom hand built rectangular tube chassis. This showcar is an attention getter at its best.

Jessica and Joe went to high school together and now recently together again, after Joe being in Afghanistan for many years as a contractor, is a real blessing to them.

Joe had an auto repair shop in the state of Washington for some time and they both have lived in the State of Washington. Jessica currently works in the Coldwell Banker Real Estate office on the island. They reside in Venice East and moved there in 2012 from Jacksonville, Texas near Tyler, Texas.

The Marshes found out about our club while searching the internet for car clubs in Venice and our informative website in the capable hands of our webmaster Chuck Ford, popped up. They found out where we meet and joined a couple of months ago.

We look forward to being with you at our many functions and hope we can keep up with you on tours. Welcome to our club family.

2 January 2016 Owner’s Manual

Message From The PresidentWell, believe it or

not, the New Year 2016 has come and 2015 is behind us. It seems like we no more start one year and the last one is over. 2015 was a very successful

and prosperous year with the club, adding membership and a very successful collector car show last October. As our club grows in the future, I expect 2016 to be another great and fun year. I hope all of our members stay as active as they have in the past because that is what makes our club great.

On Monday, December 14th, we had our annual Car Club Christmas Dinner Party at the Jacaranda Country Club that was attended by (63) of our members. After everyone enjoyed a great dinner, Bill Trier installed all of our new Officers and Directors for 2016. Following the installation, Bill Trier conducted our gift exchange which was the highlight of the evening. As usual, it was a great evening of fun for all. If you missed this event please try hard to attend next year.

I would also like to remind all of our members that have not sent in their local club renewal dues to do so as soon as possible. Your National Dues are also due and payable directly to the National. Your renewal form can be found in your September/ October magazine issue. They do not bill you separately as we do. You can also just call the National and pay your renewal by credit card if you wish, or renew online.

For all of our members that are getting back late, that do not know that we are changing the location of our General Membership Meetings, starting in January we will be meeting at the Venice Presbyterian Church, located at 825 The Rialto, Venice. The church is located behind the Rialto Shopping Center near the Venice Hospital. I am sure that everyone will enjoy our new location. The meetings will still be on the second Monday evening at 7:00 PM.

On Wednesday, January 27th we will have our monthly lunch at ‘The IHOP Restaurant’ located at 4369 Tamiami Trail, Venice at 1:00

PM. Everybody had a great time when we were there several months ago and I am sure everyone will enjoy it again. The February lunch location is still to be determined.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, January 16th 2016 for our ‘Paid’ Car Show for the ‘Rotary Art Fest’ located out at the Venice Airport Fair Grounds from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This is an annual car show that we have done for them for the last several years. As this is a ‘Paid’ car show so please try hard to attend so we can make a good showing and be invited back next year.

We are in need of volunteers to fill a couple of positions on our calling committee that notifies our members as to upcoming club events. If you would like to help out, please call Lois Sinclair @ 941-408-9217 to volunteer.

Please also mark your calendars for Sunday, February 14th for our annual ‘Cruisin’ at the Gazebo’ Car Show from 1:30 to 3:30 PM in Downtown Venice at Centennial Park. This is always a very enjoyable afternoon showing off our cars and talking with the public.

At our February General Membership Meeting, we will again have our annual auction with the famous Mr. Bill Trier as our auctioneer. Please bring your items that you would like to have auctioned off to this meeting. The money from all of the items sold will go into the clubs general operating fund. All items not sold will be returned to the person that brought them. This is always a lot of fun for everyone.

Sue and I would like to wish all of our members and friends a Very Happy and Safe New Year.

Please feel free to call be anytime if you have any ideas on how to make our club bigger and better and more enjoyable. We need everyone’s help and input to make our club prosper in the future.

Locomotive engineer George Johnston, after making a detailed examination of continental makes of motor cars, came to the conclusion that he could design and make a better vehicle than any of them and, in particular, a better engine. The first British-built motor car was thus conceived and by the end of 1895 was ready for financial backing. Johnston formed a joint venture with William Arrol to form the Mo-Car Syndicate Limited, which was to produce his car. The first Arrol-Johnston car was a six-seater “Dogcart” (a vehicle with two transverse seats placed back to back), which went into production at a factory at Camlachie, in the East End of Glasgow.

The company’s Camlachie premises were destroyed by fire in 1901, and production was moved to Paisley. In 1905 the company’s name was changed to the Arrol-Johnston Car Company Ltd. In 1913 Arrol Johnston bought land at Heathhall, just outside Dumfries, and commissioned an American firm to build a factory.

This is said to be the first factory in Britain to use ferro-concrete (concrete reinforced with metal bars).

The first post war Arrol-Johnston was the Victory model of 1919. In 1921 the cheaper Galloway was launched as a separate make, from the Tongland works near Kirkcudbright. The car was based on the Fiat 501, and production was moved to the main factory in Heathhall in 1922. There also was the Empire model manufactured for the colonies.

In 1927 Arrol-Johnston was merged with Aster of Wembley, London to form the combined marque of Arrol-Aster, with directors from both Arrol-Johnston and Aster. Some of the car models were given Burt-McCollum single sleeve valve engines in the interest of quiet operation, but overhead valve models were also continued. The company lasted for two more years before going into receivership. Limited production and sales continued until 1931.

Ole Tamiami Trail Car Tour - Part TwoHello folks this is just a follow -up of our car tour on November 21st. We had a fun bunch make the trip

that Saturday forty-five to be exact as well as 23 cars some old , some not as old and some new... I want to thank the participants that showed up as it appeared rain was threatening .. As we motored through and around the old Trail many club members had remarked that they had lived in Venice and surrounding area’s for awhile and did not know these roads existed ? How amazing is it when you become a resident of a town or city and you make new discoveries that you never knew existed before?? I guess opening your mind to new opportunities is what our club is about exploring different options and learning . . .

Our tour began at Wal-mart in So. Venice and headed south on the trail to West Villages Pkwy. where we went east and continued to River Rd. at which point we continued to move No. to E. Venice Ave. and then west to Jacobson were we turned No. to go to Border Rd. on to Albee Rd By-Way and then turning West on Laurel Rd. and back on to Old Venice Rd. where we made our way to Bay Rd. and then back on the Trail and then on to Vamo Rd and then No. again on the trail to “Philipi Creek” ..

We arrived at the Philipi Creek Restaurant just as it started to sprinkle . Did not stop those FOODY’S from making a gang rush not to get wet.. Ask those who attended if they had fun ?? I know appetites were pretty GOOD!!!! The restaurant treated us well and not one complaint about the food came from anyone ?? I guess this may be one of the tours that repeats itself ?

Your Tour Committee has an exciting year planned for 2016 so stayed tune for some more adventures …....... Any questions or any idea’s about future tours you would like to see feel free to let myself , Nancy Vandegrift or Bev Arnold know of your wishes...

Thanks, George Nubile , Nancy Vandegrift , Bev Arnold
