Lake County rolls out bear-resistant garbage cart program

TAVARES — Lake County is rolling out its bear-resistant garbage cart program, with approximately 840 specialized carts available for county residents living in areas with the most re-ported human-bear interactions.

“The distribution of carts is timely, as bears are most active during the fall months,” said Mary Hamilton, Environmental Services Manager. “While these carts will be very helpful to those living in areas with large populations of Florida black bears, such as Astor and Royal Trails, it is still important for all residents to be bear-wise and practice the safe disposal of trash.”

The carts, purchased through a $200,000 Florida Fish & Wildlife (FWC) grant, are available at a discounted price of $40, and can be purchased on a first-come, first served basis for affected resi-dents. Solid Waste staff will deliver the new cart in exchange for the resident’s existing county trash cart. To request a bear-resistant trash cart, residents may call Lake County Solid Waste at 352-343-3776.

Residents should be aware of their surroundings to avoid potential conflicts with bears, and follow Lake County’s ordinance that requires trash to be kept secure. To keep bears away from homes, follow these tips from FWC:

• Secure household garbage in a sturdy shed, garage or a bear-resistant container. • Put household garbage out on the morning of pickup rather than the night before. • Protect gardens, beehives, compost and livestock with electric fencing.

• Encourage your homeowners’ association or local government to institute ordinances on keeping foods that attract wildlife secure.

• Feed pets indoors or bring in dishes after feeding outdoors. • Clean grills and store them in a secure place. • Remove wildlife feeders or make them bear-resistant. • Pick ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground.

Attend our luncheon the third Wednesday of every month at Lake County's premier event facility Lake Receptions! Our luncheons are a great networking and learning opportunity. This month's featured speaker is Bobby Bonilla, Director of Lake County Parks and Trails.

Our pumpkin vendor is searching the nation for the best jack-o-lantern and offering a 10,000 dollar prize to the pumpkin

photo with the most votes. There is a roadside banner in front of our pumpkin patch advertising the contest website. We

also have the website shared on the chamber's social media pages and our website. When someone visits our community

pumpkin patch they may buy a pumpkin of any size and should be given a visitor sticker. When they carve their pumpkin

they are to take and upload a picture WITH the sticker visible to the vendor's contest page on Facebook. If a customer has

L ong & Scott Farms is a 4th generation family farm, in Mt Dora and Zellwood, Florida. In 1963, Frank D. Scott, Jr. left his Virginia family farm with his wife, Becky and three small children to start his own farm. He was en-

couraged by Billy Long, a successful ‘Muck” Farmer in Zell-wood, who also was his childhood friend and neighbor from

the Eastern Shore, of Virginia. Frank began by clearing 100 acres of sand land to grow vegetables and expanded to 1200 acres over the years. We recently lost the in-valuable guidance of both Mr. Billy and Mr. Frank. Long & Scott is now run by Frank’s son Hank (Frank the III) with his son Sonny (Frank the IV) who handles all the land prep prior to planting. Hank’s daughter Haley Veilleux operates the Farmers Market and Café, and his sister Rebecca Ryan manages the Corn Maze and Agritainment on the Farm. Pickle (Kirby) Cucumbers are our main crop at the Farm, each year we harvest 1,200 acres of cucumbers between the spring and fall seasons, along with 90 acres of the world famous Scott’s Zellwood Sweet Corn®. In the cooler winter season, 450 acres of Red, Green, and Savoy Cabbage are produced. Along with Strawberries, Kale and Florida sweet onions, we also try different veggies every year. We now have 40 acres certified Organic. Long & Scott is celebrating 54 plus years of quality vegetable production, and we are proud of our history and the many employees, vendors, customers, and Ag groups that have supported us over the years. We are very blessed and thankful for the re-sources of land and water, and we are good stewards of our land and water, protect-ing them for the next generation. Thank you,

Pamela Fairman
