Leading Sires In California: January 1 Through June 13, 2010

www.ctba.com CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED WEEKLY • June 16, 2010 3

Marty and Pam Wygod have announced they will be dispers-ing their California breeding stock at Barretts in Pomona,California, in October.

The dispersal involves about 100head, including broodmares, year-lings, and weanlings. The Wygodsalso plan to sell their River Edge Farmnear Buellton, Calif., with stallionsBertrando, Benchmark, Tribal Rule, and Dixie Chatter moving to otherCalifornia breeding facilities in timefor the 2011 breeding season.

“We have confidence that thesemares and stallions will continue to do wellin the future, and we will continue to sup-port the stallions,” Marty Wygod stated June16. “But going forward our primary focus willbe breeding and raising horses in Kentucky.”

River Edge Farm, encompassing 250 acres, was started by the Wygods and farm managerRussell Drake in 1975. One of the Wygods’ firststakes winners, Pirate’s Bounty, stood his entire19-year stud career at River Edge, and got thefarm off to a flying beginning. He was California’s leading fresh-man sire, topped the state’s two-year-old sire list twice, andCalifornia’s general sire list three times. The Wygods bred andraised 44 of his 63 stakes winners at River Edge.

More recently, in 2006-2008, the Wygods were the leadingCalifornia breeders, with progeny bred and raised at River Edgeearning more than $10.5 million over those three years.

“Although I am saddened that the era of River EdgeFarm as one of the dominant and most successful breeding

operations in California is coming to an end, Iam very proud of our achievements,” notedDrake. “But we have determined that the oppor-tunities for the Wygods’ breeding operation arefar greater in Kentucky. We intend to continue topursue our goal of producing and racing top-quality homebreds.”

The Wygods’ homebred grade I winners includePrivate Persuasion, Key Phrase,Pirate's Revenge, Silent Sighs,Sweet Catomine, After Market,Life Is Sweet, and Idiot Proof. They have raced, alone or in part-nership, additional grade I winnersPharma, Exotic Wood, TranquilityLake, and Twice the Vice, andhave bred grade I victors Octave,Officer, and Unfurl the Flag.

“Pam and I have enjoyed ourbreeding program in California, andwe are very proud of the results of

our progeny over the last 35 years,” said Marty Wygod. “What Russell Drake has accomplished with these mares, andraising the foals, is unprecedented, and we could have never doneit without him.”

Both natives of New York, the Wygods moved to California in1995 and live in Rancho Santa Fe near Del Mar.—By LennyShulman, http://www.bloodhorse.com

Weekly Update: CTBA at Horse Expo June 11-13, 2010 Continued

Will MeyersOn June 21, 1997, Will Meyers, a son of Desert Classic, won the $40,000 Sweepida Handicap at Stockton by two lengths over

Mashaka's Pride, with Jazzmanian Devil third in the field of eight. Will Meyers was trained by Tony Diaz, ridden by Adalberto Lopezand ran the six furlongs in 1:08 4/5 at odds of 2-1. Will Meyers was the fourth and final foal out of the Terresto mare Lil Rosie. TheSweepida was Will Meyers' 16th win in 32 starts. He also won the Montclair Handicap and placed in three other stakes, finishing hiscareer with 16 wins in 34 starts and earnings of $234,824. Will Meyers was bred by Robin Frost, foaled at Running Luck Ranch inParlier and was owned by A.L. Diaz and Flavio Moreno.

are jumping, hunters, dressage and three-day-eventing, as well as polo because of their willingness to “never give up.”

Western riders also use Thoroughbreds forbarrel racing and working cows on largeranches as they are able to cover the hillssmoothly and efficiently. Thoroughbreds areoften used for gymkhana and large citymounted police forces. They are so versatile that they easily adapt to being carthorses, roping horses and trail horses.

Christy Chapman, Leigh Ann Howard andMartha Miller spoke with hundreds of atten-dees throughout the event. We heard manywonderful stories of rescue and rehab of in-need horses coming off the racetrack. Wewere told of people finding horses from off thetrack and the various “jobs” these horses havetaken on in their “after racing lives”: workingcows, trail riding, jumping, dressage, three-day-eventing as well as teaching children toride. This proved that people are takingnotice of the versatility of the Thoroughbredand how useful and pleasant an off-trackhorse can be.

We educated attendees on the various ven-ues for horse racing in California as well asencouraged them to become members of ourorganization to continue to receive horse racing related information.

We answered many registration questionsconcerning off the track Thoroughbreds. We also assisted attendees with findinginformation on the various organizationswhose mission it is to save every horse andfind loving homes for these talented horses.

We received a phenomenally positiveresponse from all attendees. We did notreceive a single negative comment aboutthe Thoroughbred. This is proof that themission of the various Thoroughbred organ-izations and rescue organizations is actuallyworking and being heard by the public.

The event was very well attended eventhough the temperatures reached highinto the 90's all three days along with astrong wind.

The Expo showcased many differenthorse breeds and even had a Dog Expo aswell this year. Breed demonstrations, clin-ics and seminars commenced all three daysin six arenas for ten hours each day. Someof the clinicians included: Hilda Gurney,Gina Miles, Jonathan Field, Bob Avila,Stephen Bradley, Rick Lamb and RichardShrake along with various seminars anddemonstrations from veterinarians fromUC Davis, the US Forest Service and theSacramento County Sheriff's Search andRescue.—By Christy Chapman, CTBAEvents Coordinator
