About 12 days before the big day, my dad (who is 90 years young) fell and broke three ribs. While most of us thought there was NO WAY this event, he was convinced otherwise. After “talking” his way out of the hospital and rehab facility, he was able to meet his “obligation” to the band. Nothing could

have stopped him on his mission. Dis-cretion became the better part of valor when he agreed to conduct from a wheelchair, but not before an important lesson was learned by all of us in atten-dance. Coincidentally, the theme of the

conference was “In Honor of our Men-tors”

...nuff said.

Friends and Family By George Quinlan, Jr.

Many of us enjoy the Midwest Clinic as a delightful December ritual that remains a constant in our ever-changing lives. A time to refresh, learn new things, strengthen our relationships, and ease into the Holiday season.

The 66th Annual Midwest Clinic was no exception. A once-in-a-lifetime event for our family happened thanks to Dr. Charles Menghini and the folks at Van-derCook College of Music. As a foun-

der of the Clinic, the VCM band has performed every year at this event. This year, my father, George Quinlan, Sr. was asked to be a guest con-ductor. As a band director for almost 40 years, he has had plenty experience, but this was truly special. He was able to conduct while

his grandson (my son, Andrew) per-formed on field drum. A very special moment we will always remember!

The back-story goes like this...Dr. Men-ghini had asked my dad six months ear-lier about conducting the band. He re-membered conducting at one of the first clinics with the CYO band - probably over 60 years ago!!

Funny who you run into at the music

store on Black Friday, isn’t it? Denise Tripp has two daughters-Shannon, vio-lin and Maggie, flute. When the mother of two Jerling JHS students brought her daughters to QF, they just happened to run into two legends of the Chicago Symphony while they were here! Pic-tured below with the Tripp girls are Paul Phillips (CSO violinist) and Donald Peck (CSO flutist—retired). That must have made a really memorable family Christmas card!!

Appalachian Mountains) and was next to a hand gliding guy hooked up to all his gear who - as soon and the cloud floating around us cleared – jumped. YIKES! After that, crawling back from “the point” was much more difficult. I mean, I now knew how quickly you drop. The guy was beside me and then –POOF- he wasn’t. He went straight down before his gear lifted him up into a soaring atti-tude. It was exciting. For my purposes, both organizations were valuable and the nationally recog-nized leaders I met via NSOA – Dorothy Straub, Pam Tellejohn, Judy Evans, Jerry Kupchinsky, Arlene Witte, James Godfrey, and, of course, Jacque-lyn Dillon, – all became my mentors. Conversations at conferences allowed me to benefit from their guidance and their suggestions served as my roadmap to improve. With the Midwest theme in mind, I send a tribute to those who were my mentors and publically acknowledge my understanding of their contribution to my endeavors. Because of them, I feel more strongly the sense of importance of my contribution when I am asked to work with students. This summer I got a call from a director asking me to participate in her orches-tra’s performance at IL-MENC. The James Hart Symphonic Orchestra (Homewood/Flossmore area) directed by Sara White will be performing at the Illinois Music Educators Conference on January 26th. Sara suggested that my portion of the program be devoted to a clinic on tone production. COOL! That is one of my favorite topics! I eagerly accepted. I once worked with

Remembering that the theme of Midwest this year was a tribute to mentors; I’m reminded that once upon a time over twenty-five years ago, I attended the Mid-west Band and Orchestra Clinic whilst an orchestra teacher of Mishawaka High School in Mishawaka, Indiana. When I left the Clinic that year, I left being the newly appointed North Central Division Chairman of the National School Orches-tra Association. Jerry Kupchinsky, then the President of NSOA had asked me to serve. Jerry was a mentor to me. His daughter, Melanie, plays in the CSO. When I see her play, I think of how kind and loving her father was to us all. To the younger among us, NSOA was an organization centered on the concerns more directly associated with the public school orchestra. You see, at that time, ASTA was more concerned with private studio and pedagogy. Or, so it seemed to me. A few years ago, NSOA merged with ASTA and everyone now meets un-derneath one umbrella. While tending to my NSOA duties, I sent a survey to our membership with some general questions to learn of their needs and how NSOA could help them in their current situation. The response was over-whelming! Almost 70% of the question-naires were returned – maybe the inclu-sion of a stamped and addressed return envelope helped. I was able to make a report of some corresponding substance to the NSOA board which, I hope, was useful. I was surprised to see that many had handwritten messages. (Fine point felt markers were the rage then and I remem-ber that many were written using these new markers – trendy lot!) I didn’t save them, but now wish I had. You can imag-ine there was much wisdom from the

trenches and from names you all would know. The North Central Division was a large ten state area of the Midwest which included many school orchestras of incredible diver-sity with accomplished directors in all situations. Imagine the most remote areas in the prairie wilderness and include all the major cities within a day or two drive from you. Well, reading the messages from these directors I noticed a genuineness expressed and realized their intelligent, caring and honest nature. To now see the growth and accomplishment of our collec-tive work represented by the increasing number of students experiencing orchestral playing is a testament to dedication and honor for our cause and the quality of the people doing the work today. Keep it up! You are a noble group. There was something unique about NSOA. Many members of NSOA were not string players but “band people” who were teach-ing orchestra. Band people who love the orchestra and the orchestra literature – cool people to hang with and sometimes in fun situations. NSOA once had a week long summer session in Boone, North Carolina. Being in residence for a week in the Smokey Mountains with the likes of Merle Isaac was amazing fun! After all, I re-member his face being pictured on the cover of my first method book – “A Tune

A Day”.

I didn’t see Merle in the hand gliding line at Grandfather’s Mountain but I did come to know his spirit and energy and knew it was on par with those beside me who did jump off the mountain. I didn’t jump or plan to jump, but, I did crawl (with every molecule of my being trying to cling to cold wet rock) out to the ledge of Grandfa-ther’s Mountain (the tallest point in the

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stem-ming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello; serving as a clinician and consultant for Conn-Selmer; and, from his experience as general manager of the Wil-liam Harris Lee Workshop. Remaining active as a clinician and teacher, Lloyd directs the Silver Strings Ensemble that consists of adult learners of the stringed instruments and has performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. One of his specialties, orchestral workshops tracing the elements of the making of a stringed instrument and associating those to the elements necessary to produce quality tone on a stringed instrument, have become very popular with our Illinois and Indiana teachers. To schedule a workshop or step-up day, call

his office at our Burr Ridge location. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just the right instrument. You’ve see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all over the world!

Ultrasonic

Cleaning for Marching Brass Instruments

Looking for a great way to protect your

marching brass instruments AND stretch

your repair budget?

During the months of January and Febru-ary all marching brass instruments will receive a school discount of 20% on ul-trasonic cleaning. Are you familiar with this process? Ultrasonic cleaning is the most modern and simply the best method of brass in-strument cleaning. Replacing antiquated acids and chemicals, an ultrasonic ma-chine uses sound waves to clean your sousaphones, mellophones, and marching brass instruments. The ultrasonic process is environmentally friendly and safer for our technicians and your students. It is the most thorough and efficient method. Your instruments will be picked up, ultra-sonically cleaned, lubricated, restored to good playing condition with new corks and felts and returned to your school by your QF representative. Dent removal, silver hand-polishing, etc. can also be provided at additional cost to restore the beauty of your brass instruments!

Legendary Band-Man Passes Legendary Joliet Public School band director, Charles Peters recently passed away. He was 99 years old this year. He became the director of the Championship Joliet Grade School Band in 1942 after briefly teaching in Tinley Park and Crete. Many believe he set the standard for Middle School bands in our area, perhaps even the na-tion! He was a professional trumpet player and author of the legendary band method, Mas-ter Method and Master Theory with Paul Yoder, published by Kjos.

a group of undergraduate string education majors at The University of Michigan. As we were thinking through the sequential steps needed for teaching string playing skills, the undergraduate students used the phrase - “chunk it down” – to suggest the need to understand each elemental skill needed to attain mastery of a technique. The suggestion here is that, very different from the one-on-one private teaching stu-dio, a classroom teacher has the need to have a group of students with differing physical abilities or proficiencies (ear-to-hand skills for example) gain confidence with a skill so they can proceed to the next step comfortably. No matter where tapes are on the fingerboard, you are never going to play in tune until you learn to make your finger center pitch. You are never going to center pitch until your ear can hear the difference. So, you gotta wake up the ears. That’s a very good place to start. Sequential learning - it’s hard to do in a group setting. Though needed, you can’t go around and individually work with 40 bow arms during a 30 or 45 minute class. So you learn strategies of delivery to keep everyone interested and moving together as a group and, believe it or not, learn a new skill. The challenge to “chunk it down” helps the teacher be creative. An experienced teacher will know this as the need to say the same thing in many different ways. As a guest conductor/clinician, you are a new face telling the students things you know they have heard many times already from their director. But, you may have a differ-ent perspective or delivery strategy which enlivens the moment for learning new. So it will go on January 26th in Peoria at 9:30AM in CC403-404. I hope to see you there. I’ve worked with the kids already and they are GREAT! We’ll have a fun time. Come join us!

Congratulations to JEN, the “Jazz Edu-cation Network”, for a successful 2013 conference. This organization continues

to grow and fill the void left by the IAJE. In addition to a seem-ingly endless roster of performers (including Chicago’s own Mark O’Connor Quintet

and the Rob Parton Big Band) and clinics, many instrument manufacturers and publishers were able to display their wares in a very jazz-centric manner. Needless to say, there were no timpani

or contra-bassoons anywhere in sight! For more information on JEN, please visit their website at www.jazzednet.org. Perfect for jazz educators of all levels, this organization is a great resource. The Easy Jazz Play-Along series from Hal Leonard is definitely worth a look

for your middle school or high school musicians learning to play jazz. Currently, there are six books in the series, Vol-ume 1 First Jazz Songs, Volume 2 Standards for

Starters, Volume 3 Easy Jazz Classics, Volume 4 Basic Blues, Volume 5 Easy Latin Classics and Volume 6 Christmas Stan-dards. Each book in the series includes 18 songs, written out

in C, Bb, Eb and bass clef and CD play along. Retailing for $19.99, they are in stock at Q&F. Not jazz specific is the new “Trumpets that Work” 2013 wall calendar. Pre-pared by John Hagstrom of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and his company Trumpet Multimedia, this is the perfect post Holiday gift for your favorite trum-pet player. Each month features a differ-ent trumpet complete with photographs, manufacturing detail and performance history of each trumpet featured. The amount of research put into this calendar is evidenced throughout and is now available at all Q&F stores for $21.95. The Father of modern jazz education, Jamey Aebersold, still a vital source for anyone in the field of jazz education, has again expanded his library. Volume 133 Down by the Riverside features 15 tra-

ditional Dixieland classics, including Ja-Da, Smiles,

Avalon, Just a

Amanda Jennings is a bassoonist and a

Welcome Back and Happy New Year to everyone! The publishers have been working overtime (like Santa’s elves) to bring some exciting publications to you for 2013. Here are some of my favor-ites! The Ultimate Movie Instrumental Solos

is a new solo series from Alfred. The series includes fo-lios meant for Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Violin, Viola and Cello. Each book contains 60 different songs and a MP3 CD which features a live performance

and play-along track for each song. This folio is meant for students that have al-ready completed the first book of any standard band method. The wind books are fully compatible with each other (but not with the string books) and students can play each song as a solo or as part of an ensemble. This series does include an option piano accompaniment book so students can play-along with live or re-corded accompaniment. A few new and interesting pieces have recently been released from FJH Publish-ing. One is entitled Metal, which is an

advanced piece for more experience players, composed by Brian Balmages. This piece is rated as a grade 5 by FJH and gives the stu-dents all the techni-cal challenges they can handle. The inspirations for this

piece include both metal sounds and heavy metal music. This is an intense piece that will keep audiences on the

edge of their seats. This piece helps students become familiar with multi-meter passages and shifting tonalities; finally ending in one triumphant chord. Another exciting piece from FJH is Spy-

scape. Written by local composer Timo-thy Loest, (Peacock JHS), FJH rates this as a grade 3 meant for intermediate bands. This piece takes players and audiences through the riveting and wild world of spies. The music is very ener-getic and pushes listens through an adrenaline filled experience. Stu-dents will learn more complex and dark harmonies, as well as understated melodies. Both Metal and Spyscape are sure to be hits both with students and audiences. Grand Mesa publishing has relaesed a stunning look into the universe around us with Through the Rings of Saturn, composed by Ben Kirby. Inspired by the 1997 NASA launch of the Cassini Orbiter, this music successfully brings all the sights and sounds of the great rings of Saturn directly into your classroom. This piece is delicate and thrilling all at the same time and meant for a more experienced band with a grade rating of 5 from Grand Mesa. This piece will help students to understand the finer points in expressive playing and painting a picture through music. A fantasy for the less experience band is still possible with Bert Appertmont’s

The Sword in the Stone, published and rated as a grade 2 by Beriato publishing. Appertmont expertly tells the story, which takes place in the middle ages in England, of King Arthur and his knights of the round table. The picture of kings and princess, castles and festivities are perfectly painted for students and audi-ences alike. This piece is certain to sweep all listeners away to another era full of excitement and wonder. Hal Leonard has also put out a new folio series titled The Women of Pop. Folios are available for Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Violin, Viola, and Cello and all folios come com-plete with perform-ance accompaniment CD. This folio fea-tures the works of modern and current pop stars including Katy Perry, Adele, Lady GaGa, Beonce and more. Students will love being able to play along with their favorite pop songs. A new string orchestra collection is now available from Queenwood Publishing. Composed by John Edmondson with Anne McGinty Developing String Or-

chestra Collection features separate parts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass and optional Piano Accompani-ment. It also has a separate full score that includes program notes and re-hearsal suggestions. This collection is filled with 20 concert selections that can be used as concert pieces for younger groups, and great resource tools for more advanced groups. Students are able to learn more about the upper positions will still continuing their knowledge of al-ready learned notes and bowings. This is a great tool for any young to interme-diate performing string orchestra.
