New additions enhance the From Slavery to Freedom exhibition

The History Center recently added several new features to its long-term exhibition, From Slavery to Freedom.

2 The Newsletter of the Senator John Heinz History Center 412-454-6000 | www.heinzhistorycenter.org

From Slavery to Freedom, which is presented by BNY Mellon and funded by the U.S. Department of Education Underground Railroad Education and Cultural Program, features a new life-like museum figure of Civil War soldier Alexander Kelly, who lived in Allegheny City and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving the colors of his company in 1864 during the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm in Virginia.

Audio/visual enhancements, interactive stations, and new artifacts were added to several areas of the exhibit, including the sections focusing on the domestic slave trade, cotton plantations, freedom seeker experience, and the local Underground Railroad safe houses utilized by freedom seekers.

Newly installed iPads also allow visitors to scroll through digitized copies of manumission, indenture, and freedom papers discovered by the Allegheny County Recorder of Deeds office that help to tell previously untold stories about slave ownership and freedom in Western Pennsylvania.

The Civil War in Pennsylvania: Commemorative Edition of Pennsylvania Heritage, Pennsylvania Legacies, and Western Pennsylvania HistoryThe History Center collaborated with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to publish a statewide magazine that focuses on Civil War topics.

“The Civil War in Pennsylvania: A Photographic History” This new 312-page book features a collection of 475 rare and unpublished images that highlight Pennsylvania’s role on the battlefield and on the home front. Many of the photos and artifacts featured in the book are included in the Pennsylvania’s Civil War exhibit.

“The Civil War in Pennsylvania: The African American Experience”In December, the History Center will publish a new book featuring essays written by national experts on African American life during the Civil War. This publication will officially launch at the History Center’s annual “Books in the ’Burgh” book fair on Dec. 7.

Pennsylvania’s Civil War, presented by Mylan, features more than 150 artifacts, including items on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the National Civil War Museum, and the Kenneth Turner Collection, along with rare archival images, six life-like museum figures, and immersive settings. The exhibit features exact replicas of the largest and smallest cannons used during the Civil War — a massive 26-foot-long, 90-ton smooth bore 1864 Rodman Cannon and a comparatively pint-sized 575-pound 1859 Mountain Howitzer gun.

On select weekends throughout the fall, Civil War-themed living history demonstrations help to provide visitors with a realistic portrayal of life in Western Pennsylvania during the war. The exhibit is a key component in a series of programs and publications developed in partnership with PA Civil War 150, the statewide initiative to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The exhibit is on display through Jan. 5, 2014. For more information, please visit www.heinzhistorycenter.org/civilwar.

Located on the History Center’s fourth floor, the From Slavery to Freedom exhibit highlights the history of the anti-slavery movement, the Underground Railroad, and the impact of 19th century activism on the modern quest for civil and human rights in Pittsburgh.

The exhibit is co-sponsored by PPG Industries Foundation, the University of Pittsburgh, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and The Double Eagle Foundation.

For more information about From Slavery to Freedom, contact Samuel W. Black, director of the African American Program at the History Center, at 412-454-6391 or [email protected].

Pennsylvania’s Civil War exhibition Showcases the State’s Impact on the Civil WarThe Pennsylvania’s Civil War exhibition explores Pittsburgh’s role as the “Arsenal of the Union” and the impact Western Pennsylvanians had on the war both on the battlefield and on the home front.

In early 2014, the History Center will unveil a rare time capsule of American history as part of a new exhibition on the Steamboat Arabia, a river boat built in Pittsburgh. In the fall of 1856, the Steamboat Arabia was heading up the Missouri River when it struck a tree snag and sank near Kansas City, Mo. More than 130 years later, a group of modern-day adventurers discovered the steamboat buried beneath a Kansas cornfield with many of the 200 tons of supplies in perfect condition, including fine dishware, clothing, and bottled food.

In partnership with the Steamboat Arabia Museum in Kansas City, the Steamboat Arabia exhibition will showcase more than 1,000 objects from the Arabia collection, including many items which were made in Pittsburgh. Using artifacts, images, and interactive experiences, the exhibit will examine frontier life, the steamboat era, and the importance of the rivers during a key period of exploration in American history. Fort Pitt Museum’s new exhibit, Unconquered: History Meets Hollywood at Fort Pitt, presented by the Laurel Foundation, explores the story behind the siege of Pittsburgh and the star-studded 1947 Cecil B. DeMille movie that focuses on this era.

Over two months in the summer of 1763, Fort Pitt and Pittsburgh were attacked by American Indians participating in a broader movement known as Pontiac’s Rebellion. Fort Pitt survived the siege, and more than 180 years later in 1947, the story was made famous in the epic action-romance film “Unconquered,” which featured stars Gary Cooper, Paulette Goddard, and Boris Karloff.

Using rarely seen original movie props, photographs, and costumes alongside authentic 18th century artifacts and documents, Unconquered examines this turning point in American history and encourages visitors to compare and contrast the historical events with the Hollywood depiction. The “Unconquered” movie is shown daily in the Fort Pitt Museum auditorium throughout the run of the exhibit.

40th anniversary of first excavation at meadowcroftMeadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, the oldest site of human habitation in North America, recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the site’s first excavation.

In 1955, Albert Miller stumbled upon a groundhog hole on his family’s farm in Avella, Pa., Washington County, and uncovered what looked to be a prehistoric tool. Miller, an amateur archaeologist, enlarged the hole and found several artifacts, including burnt bone, flint flakes, and an intact flint knife. He chose to cover up the hole and carefully search for a professional archeologist who could properly assess the historical significance of the site. The discovery led to the excavation of the Rockshelter by Dr. James Adovasio and a team of University of Pittsburgh archeologists, which began 40 years ago in June 1973.

During the second year of the excavation, radiocarbon results from a Smithsonian lab showed the artifacts found at the Rockshelter dated back nearly 16,000 years, proving Meadowcroft is the oldest site of human habitation in North America.

Meadowcroft, recently named one of the “Five Great Places to See evidence of First Americans” by Smithsonian magazine, enjoyed another strong season in 2013 with large crowds and several special events.

Throughout the video presentation, special artifacts illuminate inside the gallery, including Mario Lemieux’s 1991 Stanley Cup jersey, Dick Groat’s 1960 MVP jersey, and the Three Rivers Stadium turf from Franco Harris’ “Immaculate Reception” in 1972.

Recently, the Sports Museum added new video clips from the top moments over the past several years. New highlights include Hines Ward’s touchdown reception in Super Bowl XL and Santonio Holmes’ tiptoe catch in Super Bowl XLIII; Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal in the 2008 Winter Classic and Marc-Andre Fleury’s incredible saves in the 2009 Stanley Cup; Chip Ganassi’s Triple Crown of Racing in 2010; and last season’s record-breaking Clairton High School football team.

The video concludes with five screen displays of two of the most incredible moments in sports history: Bill Mazeroski’s 1960 World Series-winning home run and Franco Harris’ “Immaculate Reception.” It’s an experience sports fans will want to relive over and over.
