He runs a corporate membership seminar series as part of the Institute for Management Studies and leads the Institute for Creativity and Innovation at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis. In an effort to borrow the famous Fish! video as a part of enhancing service excellence, Rebecca Boyer, R.N., BSN, manager, Women’s Health Care, in collaboration with Michelle Bollinger, M.S., HRM, director, Human Resources Development, asked an associate of Dr. Lundin’s if he would donate a copy to the hospital. Instead, he generously offered to make a live presentation of his powerful message that “choosing your attitude will help you love the work you do, even if you can’t always do work that you love.” Approximately 40 Pride Team members attended the presentation in the Administra- tive Board Room. The room was filled with fish balloons and tasty fish snacks. “Dr. Lundin has a genuine love and appreciation for nurses as his mother was a nurse and his daughter is a nurse practi- tioner. His presentation to the nurses in WHC was well received by all who attended,” said Donna Fabean, R.N., BSN, director, Women’s Health Care, Pediatrics, Partners in Women’s Health. Dr. Ottuso Presented Skin Cancer Lecture at Cancer Center

As part of May’s National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Patrick Ottuso, board certified dermatologist with IRMC, presented Skin Cancer: Sense in the Sun to a capacity crowd at the Cancer Center.

The free lecture, in its second year, was held on May 28 in tribute to one of Dr. Ottuso’s patients who passed away from malignant melanoma at age 24. The patient’s mother, Joy Green, was present at the lecture.

Dr. Ottuso, shown here during the question and answer session, gave people basic information about how to protect themselves in the sun and get early intervention for possible skin cancer.

New Outpatient Entrance on Second Floor Now Open

In an effort to enhance accessibility and efficiency for outpatient services, patients who have appointments with Pre-admission Testing (PAT) are now using our new outpatient entrance located on the east side of the Emergency Department. The entrance opened on June 15.

The entrance can be easily identified by the blue awning and sign location. Once patients enter the building, there is only a short distance to walk for outpa-tient registration and PAT appointments.

“This is just one small step in how we continue to improve access to our outpatient services,” said Sherry Cooper, R.N., BSN, OR Manager.

Both Lynn Hubbard and Cathy Schroeder received Certified Legal Nurse Consultant (CLNC) designation recently, recognizing them as registered nurses with specialized knowledge in the legal field.

Lynn, R.N., MPH, who came to IRMC in 2007 as vice president/chief nursing officer, and Cathy, R.N., M.S., BSN, CNOR, who came to IRMC in 2001 and is currently director of Patient Care Services and Surgical Services, began the process in April. It involved a week of all-day classes in Orlando with a daily requirement of three hours of homework a night capped by a 2½-hour exam.

Both Lynn and Cathy called it an “extremely intense week.”

“It was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Cathy said. “This education will help ensure we are charting appropriately, reviewing case records, making sure our policies are following the standard of care, reviewing charts for evidence of tampering, and assisting in

the gathering of information needed to help the defense of a case.”

CLNCs are qualified to consult on the following types of cases: • Medical and nursing malpractice cases • General negligence cases • Product liability cases • Toxic tort and environmental cases • Workers’ compensation and workplace injury cases • Criminal cases

Lynn Hubbard and Cathy Schroeder Earn Legal Consultant Designation

Kathy Clark, R.N., CCRN, nurse manager, Intermediate Cardiac Care, has earned the designation of Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) from the

American Organization of Nurse Executives and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

Kathy, who came to IRMC in November 2007 as nursing supervisor, began the independent study to earn the CNML two years ago. To earn the designation, an individual must satisfy

eligibility requirements that incorporate a blend of work experience and education, agree to adhere to Professional Standards of Conduct, and pass the CNML examination. The CNML examination tests knowledge required of a nurse manager in the areas of financial management, human resource management, performance improvement, strategic management and technology.

“The credentialing program validates the knowledge base required to be a nursing manager and leader,” Kathy said. “I learned a lot in the whole process of studying. It enhanced the knowledge that I already had and validated the current work that I do.”
