My sisters and brothers and I havealways been extremely proud ofour parents, Mozelle and William

Blair. They raised us in a home that was ripe with

Christian values and they taught us to treatpeople fairly and with dignity.

When we were much younger we were fas-cinated by the business activities of both ourmother and our father.

Our mother owned and operated a highly-sought after catering business. As children weworked in the business and gained skills thatmany of our peers were unable to acquire asteenagers.

We also were able to work with our fatheras he published an important communitynewspaper. We learned how to write stories, how to set type, answer phones and even selladvertising.

We never took the accomplishments of ourparents for granted. We were inspired bythem, and felt very special that they were thepeople who had brought us into this world.

You can imagine the joy that we now feelknowing that the monumental accomplish-

ments of our father will be archived and ac-knowledged by the University of Texas at Ar-lington.

It is something that none of us ever imag-ined.

While Dad worked day and night on theElite Newspaper, we always knew that hiswork was important.

However, we never knew that it was so sig-nificant that an institution of higher learningsuch as the University of Texas at Arlingtonwould one day make it part of its “specialcollections,” and that it would share his workproducts with the world for generations tocome.

As a family we are very happy for our fa-ther, and we are very proud of him. We arealso especially grateful to the University ofTexas at Arlington for not only agreeing toarchive his papers, but also for agreeing toname a scholarship fund in his honor and toestablish a lecture series in his name.

What the university has done has ensuredthat our father’s work with live forever, andthat he will not be forgotten once the goodLord calls him home.

Minister of the Week Student of the Week

Recently I made a decision to do-nate my personal and professionalpapers to the University of Texas

at Arlington. The University has taken possession of

my life’s work, to archive it and make itavailable to scholars and students around theworld via the internet.

Additionally, the University will establisha scholarship fund in my name and will con-duct an annual lecture series that will alsobe named after me. Each year students fromthe university will work as interns at theElite Newspaper.

The decision to choose the University ofTexas at Arlington was made after an ex-haustive process that included notifying nu-merous Texas institutions that my paperswould be available for donation.

A number of academic institutions con-tacted my personal representatives, JosephGreen Bishop and Clem Maddox, who rep-resented me in the initial stages of theprocess; expressing their interest in archiv-ing what is being referred to as the “WilliamBlair Collection.”

The University of Texas at Arlington waschosen after reviewing the presentations ofnumerous institutions of higher learning thatexpressed an interest in archiving the papers.

UTA was chosen because of the campus’proximity to Dallas, their ability to preservethe papers and the intense interest theydemonstrated in the project.

I had discussions with renowned historianDr. Marvin Dulaney, who chairs UTA’s his-tory department, and other members of theschool’s academic staff. I was impressedwith their sincerity and professionalism. Dr.Dulaney, who is well respected in the Dallascommunity, said that my papers would be of“tremendous value to the public and toscholars.”

When I started my life’s work more thanhalf a century ago I had no idea that mywork product would be of interest to others.

I wanted to be a good newspaper pub-lisher and gave little thought to what wouldoccur beyond that.

Now, with the aid of modern technologyand the staff of a major university; students, academics and members of the public fromaround the world will have access to mywork.I am honored, thrilled and delighted.

I would like to thank members of myfamily for supporting my decision. And Iwould like to thank Mr. Green-Bishop andMr. Maddox for the diligence and hard workthat they put into the project.

Quite frankly, I did not expect all of this.I am indeed grateful to those many membersof the public who have supported me and theElite Newspaper.

I am grateful to God who has kept me forso many years.

January 2, 1945 in Dal-las, Texas, is the dayCharles Butler Sr., beganhis worldly journey. Fromthe beginning, his parentsinstilled an appreciationfor blessings bestowedupon his life. The DallasIndependent School Dis-trict provided the educa-tional foundation. Andduring these formativeyears, Charles was known

for academic aptitude andathletic powers.

While attending LincolnHigh School in South Dallas, the life-long nickname of "Turk" was given toCharles because of sports acumen. After graduating from high school, Turkfurthered his education at Bishop College where he earned a Bachelor of Sci-ence degree and again graduated with academic and sports honors. Turk married Sheila Coit Butler in 1969 and to that union one son; Charles

Earl Butler II was born. The family was devoted to the various aspects of thesports arena. This sports affinity showered the Butler family.

Throughout his 35-year teaching career, Turk was fortunate to have crossedthe paths of numerous youth. Students he taught at J.N. Erwin M.S., O.WHolmes M.S., D.A. Hulcy M.S., Hillcrest H.S., and Kimball H.S. are differenttoday because he demanded maximum, not minimal sacrifices from individ-uals. Such a caring spirit influenced their lives tremendously. The numerous awards garnered by Turk serve as a testament to his dedica-

tion, commitment, and servant leadership. These distinctions include Who'sWho Among America's Teachers Third Edition 1994, various Dallas ISD

championships at the middle school level in football, basketball, and track, high school coaching achievements, and 2003-2004 Coach of the YearAward. His stellar coaching records marvel most with five Individual StateGirls Track Championship Titles and one Boys State Track Title while coach-ing at Kimball High School.

Romans 5:12-2012”Therefore, just as sin en-

tered the world through oneman, and death through sin,and in this way death came toall men, because all sinned13for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin isnot taken into account whenthere is no law. 14Nevertheless,death reigned from the time ofAdam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sinby breaking a command, as didAdam, who was a pattern of theone to come.”

15”But the gift is not like thetrespass. For if the many died bythe trespass of the one man, howmuch more did God's grace andthe gift that came by the grace ofthe one man, Jesus Christ, over-flow to the many!

16Again, the gift of God is notlike the result of the one man'ssin: The judgment followed onesin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many tres-passes and brought justification.

17For if, by the trespass of theone man, death reigned throughthat one man, how much morewill those who receive God'sabundant provision of grace andof the gift of righteousness reignin life through the one man,Jesus Christ.”

18”Consequently, just as theresult of one trespass was con-demnation for all men, so alsothe result of one act of righteous-ness was justification that brings

life for all men.19For just as through the dis-

obedience of the one man themany were made sinners, so alsothrough the obedience of the oneman the many will be maderighteous.”

20”The law was added so thatthe trespass might increase. Butwhere sin increased, grace in-creased all the more,21so that, just as sin reigned in death, soalso grace might reign throughrighteousness to bring eternallife through Jesus Christ ourLord.”

What is a major theme youhear when you listen to thenews?

What is a major theme you seewhen you look at the world? When you look at your own life?Is there a theme?

One common theme is this“problems”. When you watchthe news, the theme is problems. The Enron disaster.

The questionable judging inthe figure skating competition.Terrorism. Problems. When youlook at your own life, you often

see problems perhaps they are fi-nancial problems, family or per-sonal problems, health problems.

What is the biggest of all theproblems you have? It is the oneproblem that no one likes to talkabout the problem of death.Death is really everyone’s prob-lem.

Death does not care who youare regardless of your job, yourphysical condition, your familyresponsibilities, the number ofpeople who depend on you deathdoes not care about those things. It is a problem that everyone has, regardless of who they are.

What is the death rate in theU.S., compared to Afghanistan? It is the same 100%. Death doesnot care where you live, or howhealthy or technological you are.

Why does not anyone want totalk about the problem of death? Two reasons, I believe.

Reason number one: becausethere is no solution. No one willever come up with a cure fordeath, a way to prevent it.

Another reason people do notwant to talk about death, is be-cause no one really knows forsure what happens next. Is therereally a heaven? Is there really ahell?

Or, is it like in the moviesafter you die you become a ghostand float around the earth? Orare you reincarnated and becomea cat, or a tree?

What happens after you die? There is great confusion, there isno solution, and because of that,

no one wants to talk about it.We live in a culture of denial.

We pretend that death does notexist, but it does.

Rather than live in denial, letus face this problem head-on thisweek. Let us look in the Bible, and as we do, you might be sur-prised to find that there is a solu-tion to the problem of death.

Our text for this week ac-knowledges that death is a prob-lem.

In verse 12, it says that “deathcomes to all men.” In verse 14,it says that “death reigns.” Butthe Bible also tells us the causeof death.

Perhaps if we knew the cause,we could find the solution. Inverse 12, it says, “Therefore, justas sin entered the world throughone man, and death through sin,and in this way death came to allmen, because all sinned.” Sin isultimately the cause of death. And it all began with one manAdam.

In our Old Testament lessonfor this week, we see the biggestdisaster in the history of theworld the fall into sin.

Adam failed to obey God.And when that happened, sin en-tered the world. I do not thinkpeople really understand themagnitude of what happenedthat day in the Garden of Eden.

Dear Dr. Hollie,My sister has done me wrong so many times. Currentlyshe is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. She saysshe’s been clean for a little over two months. She hasbeen staying with my mom while trying to get up on herfeet. I was nervous for my mom because she loves herchildren so much that she does all she can for us. Eventhough in the past, my sister has stolen from her toomany times to count. She has stolen money, jewelry, ap-pliances, even a flat screen television. So I was nervous.Well, she has not done anything wrong in the time thatshe’s been there. She is working, and is talking aboutschool. Well, she and I went to an event together, andbecause it was so late, I offered for her to spend the nightat my house. On the way home, I stopped at the ATMbecause I had to pay my daycare bill the next morning. The next morning, after searching and tearing my houseup, I could not find the money that I had just gotten out.I went completely off on my sister. I cussed, threatened, and called her all kinds of names. I left that morning, very angry, and sent her walking. As I was backing mycar up, the envelope that I had used to put the money inwas sitting in a puddle of water under my car. All themoney was in it. Now I am way too embarrassed to tellmy sister about it. Also, I feel like if she hadn’t done somuch in the past, I would not have been so quick toblame her.

Apologize for what?

Dear Apologize,

that’s exactly what you need to do: apologize assoon as possible. Swallow your pride. Ask your sisterfor forgiveness because your actions could’ve causedher to relapse. Make amends with her and anyoneelse that you may have shared that accusation with.the best thing that you can do for your sister is cele-brate her recovery.

Prayer is not some magic formulathat is used to move the hand of God,but it is a sincere desire that movesthe heart of God. G. Campbell Mor-gan said, “Men only pray with pre-vailing power when they pray in themidst of the whirlwinds, emergen-

cies, and madness of life”. The Psalm writer said it sowell in Psalms 126:6 “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again withrejoicing bringing his sheaves with him”. The key wordis weepeth. When life storms cause us to weep and weyet trust God in prayer, this kind of condition and atti-tude of prayer will put a demand on the Spirit of God.

Welcome to the weekend, Baby!Congrats to all the graduates and par-ents of 2012! You deserve kudo's foryour awesome effort in completing12 years of school. I want to encour-age you to go further with your edu-cation! Even though you hear,"People w,ih college degrees can'tfind work", imagine what you are leftwith when you only have a highschool diploma? Why a college edu-cation? It gives you options. My wifeand kids were talking about those op-tions recently. My wife Sheila has aBachelor of Science Degree in Nurs-ing. I have 32 years of success in theRadio Industry! My wife currently isa high school teacher, while I have ashow that airs in 100 plus citiesaround the U.S. If they told me to-morrow my services were no longerneeded, I'd have to think seriouslyabout what I'd do. If her principal toldmy wife she was no longer needed, she could walk in an $80,000 a yearjob the next week. I've had a huge ca-reer, made a lot of money and in real-ity feel truly, truly blessed! Had I notbeen successful in my chosen field,

I'd have gone back and grabbed a de-gree, no doubt! Since we moved toDallas, I've had prime time gigs at100.3 Jamz, K104, Magic 102 Jam-min Oldies,Joy 104.9, Magic 94.5,94.5 KSoul and now nationwide host-ing a Rock N Roll show(GoogleSmokin Kevan) for Cumulus MediaNetworks. Each time, my talent spokefor me and God granted me favor. Iunderstand how fortunate I've been.My wife has worked as an RN at ahospital, decided she was bored andbecame the person that approves/dis-approves your bill for an insurancecompany. Then she decided shewanted to spend more time with ourkids and ran the El Centro CollegeHealth Center under Dr. Lassiter.Later she chose to become a schoolnurse, so she'd have a chance to spendSummers with our kids and take careof me,lol! 10 years later she had theurge to become a teacher and she did, receiving an "offer she could not re-fuse." I have no doubt her next goalof becoming a college instructor willbe reached, know why???? Becauseshe has options. So be encouraged

graduates of 2012 to put yourself inposition to have a future full of op-tions! To be honest, I've had a blast, but wish I had the options my wifehas. The options she gave herselfwhen she was where the graduates of2012 are now! There it is, y'all. O-P-T-I-O-N-S! It was so cool receivingall the responses I've gotten on mymonth of travel columns and I've triedto respond to as many questions aspossible and yes, I'll be in the islandsin a couple of weeks, writing this col-umn from the beach with a tall glassof Sangsters Original Jamaican RumCreme and Appleton on the rocks bymy side, along with the lady I wroteabout above. This Sunday is our 22ndAnniversary and I am so glad when Ihad options while I played the datinggame, I ended up with the GrandPrize! You can always reach me [email protected]. There has been recent conversationabout the athletic-scholarship that wasawarded to the son of a wealthy hip-hop mogul. The conversation is all overthe place and everybody is putting theirtwo cents in.

Basically some people are of the op-tion that because Justin Combs is theson of millionaire Sean Combs heshould give back the athletic scholar-ship that was awarded to him byUCLA.

People are saying that because hisfather has money, and because his fa-ther can afford to pay his tuition, Justinshould give back the scholarship.Peo-ple are saying he should give it ba ckso that someone that really needs it canget an opportunity to go to college.

Let me make this clear, UCLA doesnot just randomly hand out schalor-ships. Every student - athlete has to berecruited. The only way you get re-cruited is by being recognized. In orderto be recognized you have to makeplays. You have to make game chang-ing, game breaking plays.

The only way you get to make playsis by getting on the field. The only wayyou get on the field, is by becomingone of the best players on the team.

The only way to become the bestplayer on your team is by making a per-sonal decision to be the best, and thattakes a serious commitment . student-athletes have to meet the basic require-ments set by the NCAA ClearingHouse.

The student-athlete has to meet therequirement of the SAT a nd or theACT. The quest to be a college athleteis not a easy task.

There are millions of football playersacross America that believe they can

play Divion 1football.

The truth of thematter is that thou-sands of youngmen, who haveplayed this gamesince the tenderage of 6 will notbe awarded an ath-leletic schalorship.

An athleteic-scholarship is nota hand shake and.head nod. A schol-arship is a contractbetween the Uni-versity and the stu-dent-athlete.

This contractwill provide thestudent -athlete aplace to live, breakfast , lunchdinner.tuition, books, and the opportu-nity to represent that fine institution inathletic competitions. In other wordsyou work for the University!

But, your first job is worth six fig-ures!!! I have often heard people saythe student- athletes have it made. Thetruth of the matter is being a student-athlete is very hard work.

Last week Desoto's Dontre' Wilsonverbally committed to play football atUniversity of Oregon. I have watchedthis young player work himself into oneof the nations top running backs. He isone of the best players so he should getthe best offers.

ontre had to be on top of his game inorder to make this thing happen. It'sgreat to see young players get a chanceto go to college on a scholarship. It's

great to see our kids continue their ed-ucaction.

This is the ultimate goal!! Everyyoung man and young woman that putsin the work to be a candidate for andathletic - scholarship deserves to enjoyit.

Enjoy it because you have earned it.If your young ball player starts sportsat the tender age of 6, and your childplays until they are 18, all of the time, sweat, tears, blood.

It should at least get your educationpaid for! And once you get your educa-tion, NOBODY CAN MAKE YOUGIVE THAT BACK!!!

May God Bless us and help us savethe world

The U.S. housing market isheaded on a solid path to recov-ery. According to the Departmentof Housing and Urban Develop-ment, mortgage delinquencieshave declined for the fourth con-secutive month in April, whilesales of existing homes in the firstquarter of 2012 were 5.3 percenthigher than the same period lastyear. In Dallas County and NorthTexas, median home sales priceshave increased, property valuesare up, and the total number ofhomes for sale has consistentlydeclined.Yet, for thousands of existinghomeowners in our area, thesepositive indicators do not showthe complete picture. If you pur-chased a home before the housingbubble burst in 2008, your homevalue may still be well below theamount owed on an existing mort-

gage. Being “underwater” on yourmortgage – or owing more on theloan than the home’s actual value– can prove costly and frustratingfor families who have continuedto fulfill their financial obligationsand made timely payments ontheir home loans.Impacted communities in NorthTexas cannot idly stand by, and soI want to acknowledge a uniqueopportunity coming to Dallas thatmay bring immediate mortgagerelief to families.

The Neighborhood AssistanceCorporation of America (NACA)will be coming to the Dallas FairPark on June 7 – 11, 2012, everyday from 8a.m. to 8p.m. NACA’s“American Dream” event willbring dozens of trusted lendersfrom the area to restructure theterms of existing subprime orpredatory mortgages directly withconstituents. Thousands of home-owners may able to save moneythrough reduced interest rates, lower monthly payments, andsometimes even principal reduc-tions.Homeownership is a fundamentalpillar of the American Dream, andI am committed to keeping thatdream alive by providing assis-tance to help Americans and theirfamilies stay in their homes. Formore information, questions orconcerns, you may contact NACAdirectly at 1-888-499-6222.

DALLAS – – Pastoral CounselingCenter (PCC), formerly PastoralCounseling and Education Center, announces their new tagline “heal-ing matters.” The meaning behindthe message is two-fold. First, it co-municates PCC’s staff members’ability to help individuals work to-wards healing their mental healthmatters. Secondly, it communicatesto clients, their families and thecommunity the importance of men-tal health treatment.

Clients want to be knowl-edgeable and comfortable with PCCbefore they step foot into a thera-pist’s office. As a result, a majorportion of the update is the develop-ment of a new website, www.pcc-dallas.org. The site providesinformation on all of their availableservices.

“In today’s society, seeking men-tal health treatment usually has anegative connotation. One of ourgoals is to overcome this associa-tion by getting information aboutPCC out to North Texas,” saidWayne Albrecht, Executive Directorof Pastoral Counseling Center. “In-dividuals should be praised for theirpursuit of a more meaningful andhappier life, and we feel healing

matters clearly communicates ourvision.” Design At Work, a Houston basedfull-service advertising and publicrelations firm, developed the newcampaign. For branding consis-tency, the campaign will appear onPCC’s signage, brochures andmore. This will create an identityfor PCC and top-of-mind awarenessin the community encouraging peo-ple to seek treatment from their car-ing staff.

Pastoral Counseling Center is thelargest faith-based counseling cen-ter in the Metroplex. Since 1968,PCC has been a place of refuge forthose seeking compassionate guid-ance and faith-integrated counsel-ing. The Center provides afull-range of services, includingmarriage and family therapy, coun-seling for individuals and veterans,a seminar for divorcing parents,Transcranial Magnetic Stimulationand more. The not-for-profit organi-zation believes everyone shouldhave access to treatment, regardlessof their financial status, and offersan adjusted fee payment scale basedon income for clients.
