Within two weeks of the Nene Valley Raceway Club being selected to host the British round of the off-road European championship the club heard the devastating news that our landlords second daughter had died. Jodi Dunmore (22) died within 20 months of her sister, Lucinda (19). Both sisters died of cystic fi- brosis and the club felt that it was only right to support the Dunmore family in increasing the £100,000 they have al- ready raised for this charity. Did it not rain! - Dave Smith (HT2 Evo)

The heats commenced just after 10am and by lunch time the top three were Ben Doyle, James McCarthy and Steve

Backland.

The finals commenced just after lunch with the semi B drivers attacking the Nene track. James McCarthy led the semi from start to finish and was followed home by Bill Prid-ding, George Harrison and Tim

Harrison.

The semi A went along similar lines once pole setter Ben Doyle had retired from the final. Stevo Backland came home first, Lee Downing was second, Adam Griffith third and Mathew Ball took the fourth spot. Due to the damp conditions encountered in both semis a number of driv-ers were encountering water induced issues either electrical

or engine related. The final two positions went to

Tim Harrison and Dave Smith.

The main final commenced with the sky getting greyer and by the end of the 20 minutes there were a handful of cars running and out on top was Lee Downing, Lee led home Dave Smith his “Black country Brother” and third place went to Tim Harrison who despite being the older of the team bud drivers was the first to take home any silverware from the Nene. Well done to Lee, Dave and Tim for their efforts and to those who stayed to the end.

2008 Large Scale Winter Series Round 3 — 30th November

On a true winters morning 18 drivers braved the bad weather to attend this meet-ing. The forecast for Sunday was more of the same. Despite the damp conditions the Nene’s track was holding up to all the elements the UK

weather was throwing at it.

Another meeting and another respectable turn out of HPI Baja’s, also in attendance was the Griffith family who have recently taken over as the UK Harm main agent. Adam was not the only driver to travel some distance to race, he was joined by Steve Backland who travelled down from Lanca-shire. The regular Rally X driv-ers were joined at this meeting by local ace Lee Bunker who was entering his first large scale off road meeting using a

friend’s FG Baja.

Despite the damp

conditions many drivers

braved the weather to

participate in the Nene

winter series

RRCi review of the New HPI 5T undertaken at the Nene Valley Raceway

(Due out 5th March)

Only 3 days after Christmas

the Nene decided to hold

round 4 of its winter series.

Despite air temperatures being

sub-zero and the festive fun

being in full swing 25 drivers

attended this meeting which

helped Barry and Mark cele-

brate their birthdays.

Round 1 commenced straight

after the drivers briefing with

all drivers struggling for trac-

tion. James McCarthy came

out on top, Stevo Backland

was second despite using his

new Elcon Cleon fitted with his

Evotuning engine. Third spot

went to Mathew Ball with his

HPI Baja.

With the track drying out for the remaining two rounds all drivers bettered their round 1 qualification positions and by the end of qualification James was still the fastest driver in qualification, Dave Smith was

second, third spot was Mathew Ball and in fourth sport was Darren Curtis with the first of 3 Elcon Cleons in the top eight. Despite his sore head Mark Cove was fifth and Andy Knight led home a brace of Cleons with Stevo Backland in sev-enth. Due to the Nene’s large ros-trum it was decided to run just the semis with 12 cars sched-uled for the B semi and 13 cars the A semi. With 11 cars lined up on the Nene’s long back straight the B semi com-menced and Dave’s Hoërmann was out the starting blocks faster than Linford Christie ever was. This was beneficial for Dave as he escaped a first corner incident which resulted in second place driver Darren Curtis falling three places. As the laps went by Darren fought his way back into second place and at the end of the 15 min-utes Dave and Darren had completed 21 laps. Close rac-ing was witnessed back down

the field and third, forth and fifth place could have been anyones. Finally Tim Worthey was third, George Harrison fourth and Paul Sparks in fifth. The Semi A went as you would have predicted with the calibre of the drivers involved and by the end of the 15 minutes the top 5 drivers had finished in the top 5 despite a few places changing as the session went

on.

By the end of the 1st lap of the main final Stevo Backland was flying and had pulled out a lead. With Dave Smith’s depar-ture Darren Curtis was able to pick up the second spot and kept this position until the end. James McCarthy suffered tech-nical trouble and dropped down to 10th position after just 4 laps but bravely fought back and finished a respectable 4th having battled with Tim Worthey(5th), Paul Sparks(6th). Birthday boy Mark Cove fin-

ished in 3rd. Well done all.

2008 Large Scale Winter Series Round 4 — 29th December

Close racing at the Nene (HT2 Evo, Elcon Cleon)

Ben Doyle happy with his win. Stevo (3rd), Ben (1st), Darren (2nd)

top doing 18 laps in the dry

conditions. Steve Sunnocks

with his EFRA spec car coming

home second, with third spot

being taken by Gerry Doyle and

his police livered Elcon. Who

says the police don't have a

sense of humor!!

The second round once again

saw Daren and Steve out on

top but this time third spot

went to Stevo Backland.

With snow flakes falling round

3 was going to be down to

drivers skills and this time

Steve Sunnocks was out on

top with an 18 lapper but was

1 second behind Darren’s

round 1 time.

Semi B commenced with 12

drivers on the Nene’s rostrum

and after the 15 minutes Ben

Doyle had come out on top,

ahead of Stevo Backland and

Steve Sunnocks, George Harri-

son was in fourth and James

McCarthy was fifth despite

being 3 laps down when he

started!!

Semi A went as predicted with

Darren Curtis leading from

start to finish.

With graying sky’s the main

final was delayed by 10 min-

utes whilst Ben Doyle fixed a

receiver problem meaning he

was going to start form 11th

on the grid.

Following 30 minutes of close

racing with Darren, Stevo and

Steve all leading at some point

Ben Doyle came out on top

leading home Darren Curtis

and Stevo Backland making it

a 1,2,3 for the Elcon. Dave

Smith was fourth, Lee Downing

fifth, Steve Kendall sixth and

Glyn Tailor in seventh.

2008 Large Scale Winter Series Round 5 — 1st February

On a chilly February Sunday

the Nene held its first race

meeting of 2009 when 24

large scale racers travelled to

the Nene. Not only does the

Nene have a loyal local follow-

ing but over the winter rounds

many drivers have travelled

down from the North, up from

the South and across from the

East for some winter fun! This

meeting was no different to

the rest.

Thanks from the Nene to all

those who spend 2 hours in a

car just to reach us.

Despite the forecast of snow

this meeting saw an increase

in Elcon Cleon attendees with

team Doyle turning out with

there new rides for 2009.

Round one commenced with

the Nene tracking being dry

and Darren Curtis came out on

Mark Cove finishes 3rd

despite partying until late

the night before!
