disenfranchised. If you read
Luke’s gospel and his record
of the Acts of the Apostles,
you will be amazed at the
frequency and intensity of
Jesus’ ministry to the poor
and the marginalized.
Last week a few of us were
in Florida meeting with a
man who understands better
than most the centrality of
Jesus’ ministry to “the least,
and the last, and the lost.”
Indeed, the entire Gos-
pel, good news of the
kingdom of God is that
Jesus came to reveal
the wonder of His love
and grace to those who
know their plight. And
that should come as no
surprise, for He’s abso-
lutely clear in His mis-
sion statement found in
Luke 4:18-19:
“The Spirit of the Lord is
upon me, because He has
anointed me to proclaim
good news to the poor. He
has sent me to proclaim lib-
erty to the captives and re-
covery of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who
are oppressed, to proclaim
the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Think of the message here.
(Continued on page 2)
A close friend tells this story
of Peyton Manning, the
quarterback of the Denver
Broncos. It is after the sea-
son and Peyton and some
friends are in Florida to
play some golf. They are
on the East Coast, near
Palm Beach, eating dinner,
when a middle-aged
woman from New York ap-
proaches and says in a loud
voice, “Eli, Eli Manning, my
son would kill me if he knew
I had eaten in the same
restaurant as Eli Man-
ning and not gotten his
autograph. Eli, could
you please sign this
piece of paper so I can
give it to my son when I
get back home?”
Peyton smiles and takes
the paper from her
hand and asks, “What’s
your son’s name?” And
when she tells him, he writes
him a note and signs Eli’s
name. As he returns the
paper to the woman, he
asks her, “Say, have you
ever seen his brother play?”
The woman frowns and
says, “I never knew that he
had a brother!”
When it comes to Jesus,
there are so many of us who
mistake the real Jesus for
the Jesus of our own imagi-
nation. For some, He’s the
One who came to speak
truth to power. For others,
He’s the One who will give
them exactly what they
want, provided they are
good enough. For others,
He’s the God of prosperity
who guarantees those who
follow Him a life of peace
and accumulation. But how
many of us think of the Real
Jesus; the One who always
sides with the “least of
these.”
When I was first in seminary
I took a class entitled, “The
Rich/Poor Theme in Luke/
Acts.” The thesis of the
course was that, more than
any other gospel writer, Dr.
Luke presents Jesus as the
One who’s come to seek
and to save the poor and

Wherever there are the
poor, the captives, the
blind, the oppressed you
will find the Holy Spirit at
work. That’s where He will
lead and equip the follow-
ers of Christ to go. That’s
where He will call all of us
to serve.
Over the past few years we
have seen Him doing that at
Hebron. We have seen
(Continued from page 1) scores of you grow in your
love and passion for Jesus
as you have gone beyond
your normal routine and
reached out to those Jesus
reaches to. Whether it’s
The Blessing Board,
P.R.I.S.M., The Pittsburgh
Project, YoungLives, etc., the
Lord is clearly leading us to
engage ourselves whole-
heartedly in the work Jesus
is doing among the least,
the last, and the lost. No
wonder He begins the be-
As I View It, cont.
A4 Place is becoming a
distant memory as we an-
ticipate a parking lot being
constructed in its place. But,
many of us wonder, as we
drive by week after week,
why is nothing happening?
The answer is that the next
stage requires lots of
“behind the scenes” work.
The lot must be surveyed—
which has been done. Site
plans needed to be drawn
by R.F. Mitall, then re-
drawn—which has been
done. (And they may need
to be drawn again.) The site
plans then go to the Penn
Hills Planning Committee for
approval—which is in pro-
gress. There will then be a
couple of meetings to work
through all the code re-
quirements before final ap-
proval is obtained from
Penn Hills. After all that is
accomplished, we will need
to receive a Highway Occu-
pancy Permit from Penn Dot
so we can install sidewalks
and curbs. After that, we
will be able to solicit bids
for the sidewalks, landscap-
ing, and pavement.
We are also waiting on the
required paperwork to haul
the contaminated soil that
was removed from around
the gasoline tanks to a suit-
able landfill. This should
happen in the next few
weeks. (Although, we have
heard that before!) Once
that soil is gone and the site
plan has been approved,
we can grade the site for a
parking lot. It will also take
time to put together the
final reports and have the
DEP close the site perma-
nently.
Don’t forget that all of
these steps have costs asso-
ciated with them. We’ve
tried unsuccessfully to get
people to do the work for
free, but most of us don’t
atitudes with, “Blessed are
the poor in spirit, for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus consistently calls us to
go where He goes. There’s
no greater joy than to an-
swer that call and go where
He goes.

When I think of summer, the first thing
that comes to my mind is vacation. A
time to get away, rest, relax, and be
refreshed. Our summer schedule at
Hebron is about to begin. That means
most of our Groves are at rest.
Rest is God’s healthy starting point for
us. Resting in God, abiding in His pres-
ence, is the key to fruit bearing.
God created the vast array of the
heavens and earth in six days and on
the seventh day He rested from His
work of creating. One day after they
were created, Adam and Eve then had
a whole day to spend time with God.
After a day of rest in God’s presence
their work began. They worked out of
their rest.
Spiritual growth occurs when people
are immersed in the study of God’s
Word followed by periods of reflec-
tion and rest. We must grow before
we can bear fruit. Take body building
for instance; it’s important to work a
certain muscle group on a given day
and then give it a day of rest. It is
during the day of rest that growth
takes place. If you would work the
muscle group every day, which would
cause persistent stress, the muscle
would actually deteriorate. Spiritually,
the same principles apply. When we
study God’s Word, then rest, or abide
in God’s presence, we tend to grow
more closely to the Lord. Our head
knowledge becomes heart knowledge
and our lives are then changed.
The purpose of our Grove ministry is to
make disciples of Jesus Christ who will
grow more deeply in love with Jesus,
grow more strongly connected with
others, and bear fruit while serving the
world. We see this happening at Heb-
ron. Summer is here. Now is the start
of our time to rest, abide in Him, and
become refreshed. You might consider
using the time you would spend on your
Bible Study lesson, to read a new
book, listen to your favorite music, gar-
den, cook a new recipe, connect with a
friend over iced tea, explore a re-
freshing website or be encouraged by
a daily devotion. I find great joy
abiding in Him by being still and listen-
ing to the sounds of summer after sun-
down or even an early morning walk
when the world is still sleeping.
We thought you might enjoy seeing
some of the ways those of us on the
staff will embrace our time of rest this
summer. Be encouraged. We are all
in this together…..rest, grow, bear
fruit, be pruned, rest, grow, bear fruit,
be pruned ….

Mission Spotlight: The Blessing Board
You have no idea the
wealth of blessings your
support of The Blessing
Board (TBB) provides to so
many. Every “Day of Bless-
ing” twenty or more families
come, expecting little and
surprised by much. Some
have literally nothing, and
they leave with a truckload
full of furniture, dishes, ap-
pliances, lamps, linens, and
more. But, it’s not really
about the furniture, it’s
about the love—sharing the
love of Christ. Here, TBB
volunteers share a few of
the stories that were shared
with them.
*****
A man named Gus, a re-
tired Army Special Forces
with four mostly adult chil-
dren, was referred to TBB
by the VA. His two oldest
sons are also soldiers who
were both injured in com-
bat—one in Iraq and the
other in Afghanistan. Both
are still disabled and con-
tinuing to do rehab. He is
recently divorced, and his
two teenaged children
chose to live with him. His
wife received the house and
furnishings in the settlement,
so Gus is starting over in
Pittsburgh. The VA helped
him get a home and he re-
cently landed a job, but he
has no furniture or house-
hold items. Thankfully, we
were able to meet nearly
all of his immediate needs
of beds, couches, chairs,
lamps, dishware, and other
kitchen items. It was awe-
some that TBB was able to
share the Good News with
him and to thank him for all
he has done for us.
*****
Lashia came to TBB with her
young adult son. Just a few
weeks before, she had bur-
ied her other son who was
shot during a robbery at-
tempt at their former home.
In the year prior to that, she
had buried her mother, sis-
ter, and aunt. She was
moving to another apart-
ment complex and she was
in need of most of the ba-
sics. Despite all she had
been through she had a
peaceful attitude. She said
the only way she keeps go-
ing is because of her faith in
Jesus. Thankfully, we were
able to take care of her
furniture needs, but she said
the most important thing she
got that day was the
prayer time she had with
two of the volunteers and
the testimony she heard
from the morning’s speaker.
*****
They arrived at 3:50 for
their 4:00 pm appointment
at TBB. Good thing – it
took ten minutes to get
Anna from the truck to a
seat merely 15 yards
away. Anna is elderly. She
has Parkinson’s disease.
And she has been sleeping
on the floor. Anna came to
TBB with her grandson, An-
drew. “She’s been my care
giver for 19 years,” An-
drew said. “It’s my turn to
take care of her now.” He
made his declaration while
looking me straight in the
eye as if to punctuate his
resolve. Anna sat with her
head held high as she lis-
tened to her grandson. Her
expression conveyed hints
of affection, resilience, and
pain. “He’s all I have now.
God is good.” I was wit-
nessing a sweet exchange
of appreciation between
two souls who have been
battered by the world, and
are prevailing in the strug-
gle. I came that day to TBB
knowing that I would meet
Anna. I went with the ex-
pectation of serving her.
Instead, by allowing me the
privilege of entering into
her world, she served me a
fresh dose of humility and
compassion.

HUPW News and Notes
On May 1 from 9:00 am to
2:00 pm we hosted six stu-
dents and one teacher from
Trinity Christian School.
Much thanks goes out to Ken
Collier and Dave Tedrick
for their guidance and hard
work.
Thankfully the rain held off
and we were even blessed
with a bit of sunshine.
These were our accomplish-
ments:
Weeded and trimmed
the tower garden
Weeded the beds
Picked up trash and
debris around the pe-
rimeter of the grounds
Emptied the blue trash
barrel
Leveled and seeded 3
gravesites
Wiped down all the
chairs in the main room
of the Barclay Building
Touched up the nicks,
scratches and gouges
on most of the interior
doors of the Barclay
Building
Picked rocks out of the
dirt below the gravel
driveway behind the
Barclay Building
It was a joy to work with
these young Christians. We
can be proud of what was
accomplished as we worked
to maintain and improve the
Lord’s house.

new Moderator. We were
graced with the operatic
voice of Andrey Nemzer,
who left us speechless. He
has performed with the
