Weight Floor Closed in July for Maintenance and Equipment Upgrades Starting on July 5, the weight floor will begin to close for cleaning and maintenance. During this time, Life Fitness will also be installing new weight equipment. The floor will be completely closed between Friday, July 8 and Friday, July 15. This will only effect the weight training equipment (just right of the stairs). The cardio equipment, track, gym and studios will still be open. Searching for the Six-Pack When members come to me looking to get into better shape, the most popular question I hear is “What do I have to do to get a six-pack?” So what are some of the best ways to achieve a flat, toned midsection and desirable six-pack? Unfortunately, there is not one, simple fix that will work for everybody. Getting in shape takes exercise, clean eating, and for some, the luck of genetics. Exercise Our bodies midsection is called the core for a reason. While our front ab muscles are part of the core, the lower spine and side areas of our midsection work together to help keep the core strong. It is a common misconception that doing crunches a few times a week will help you get the defined midsection we all crave. However, this is not always true. A great exercise that works the entire core at once is the plank. Planking is a body weight exercise that utilizes more than 20 muscles at one time. Some of the muscles that work during a plank are the core, thighs, glutes, shoulders and arms. Plank position requires you to hold your body in a flat, straight line for a period of time. You can also try variations of the exercise on your side or by using only one arm or leg at a time. Clean Eating When it comes to getting a flat stomach, eating clean and reducing excess body fat is just as important as exercising. By shedding the layer of fat on top of the core muscles, it is easier to see muscle definition. Genetics Sometimes, even with proper exercise and eating, people can’t seem to create the chiseled six-pack they want. Like many other aspects of our overall health, genetics plays a role in the way our bodies look, feel and act. While everybody can fluctuate when it comes to body shape and muscle definition, some people simply cannot get the exact look they want without resorting to extreme or unhealthy measures. When working hard to achieve our ideal bodies, always remember that it is better to be strong and healthy in the long run, even if your six-pack looks more like a two liter. — Lynn Madsen, ACE Certified Personal Trainer THE BAC CONNECTION Fitness • PerFormance • HealtH • Fun VOLUME 16 • NUMBER 7 • JULY 2016 DELI COMBO SPECIAL Add chips and a drink to any sandwich, wrap or quesadilla for $1 BAC DELI through July 31 Follow us: facebook.com/ bronsonathleticclub.com July Specials 6789 Elm Valley Drive, Kalamazoo, MI 49009 bronsonathleticclub.com • (269) 544-3200 July at the BAC Independence Day Monday, July 4 Club hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Youth Center and Deli closed

To anyone who has met me, it is no secret that I love to dance. When I started dancing at the age of 3, I did it simply because it was fun. Today I dance because it is fun, but also because of the health benefits it provides. When I get to dance, I call it my “hour of happy.” I currently teach two group exercise classes at the BAC that incorporate different elements of dance fitness – ZUMBA® and LeBARRE.Zumba is known for its Latin inspired dance movements paired with both Latin and international music. The basic Latin dance rhythms include merengue, salsa, cumbia and reggaeton. During my classes, I enjoy adding a few hip-hop inspired songs and routines to add more diversity and excitement to the workouts. LeBARRE brings several dance-like elements together with traditional fitness moves to enhance the traditional ballet BARRE (Balance, Agility, Resistance, Recovery and Eloquence) experience. Class participants can expect to improve muscular strength and endurance, overall flexibility and total body coordination.

According to ACEFITNESS.org, dance can provide several health benefits – both physically and mentally. The New England Journal of Medicine also notes that dancing is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia. So if you are looking for a new way to mix up your workout routine, join me for a dance class and find your “hour of happy”! For more information or class times, check out our group exercise schedule at BronsonAthleticClub.com.— Erica Stenger, Group Exercise Instructor •
