Independent candidate Dermot Richardson has called on south Dublin county council to increase the grant for business paying over €10,000 per year in rates

This grant should be for all business in the county not just for the ones in the bracket of 10k per year all businesses are struggling in the current climate and employers are trying to keep staff in employment . The reductions start from €75 euro up to the highest €670 depending on rates band business are on.

Also business have been paying water rates for a number of years along with rates.

This does not go far enough to support all business in the community.

Consultation on Children’s Welfare highlighted on Safer Internet Day

Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte T.D.has urged members of the public to engage with the public consultation on internet governance before the deadline of 18 March saying: “Safer Internet Day is an ideal opportunity to highlight the work we are doing to examine the regulation of the internet. It is so important that people affected by issues such as cyber bullying, can make their voice heard during consultations like this. In particular, I feel it is important that young people contribute to developing policy in this area. They are living through a radical transformation in the way we interact socially and can provide us with invaluable insights into the real impact of this change on their lives. .”

The Minister reiterated his call for all interested parties and particularly parents and young people to engage with the Group in the development of their report.

The consultation will run until 18 March and comments received will be considered by the Group in their preparation of a report to the Minister in the summer.

A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN By James Joyce

Following it's sold out run in Dublin - The New Theatre, Dublin presents James Joyce's “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”

In the name Stephen Dedalus, he adopted in this, his early masterpiece, Joyce signalled his need to escape the nets he claimed Ireland would trap him in – religion and nationality. He would seek

to fly “above these nets”. Unique among his contemporaries he laid claim for the artist’s freedom from such temporal concerns to “forge the uncreated conscience of his race”. Thus began his life long task of sketching the universal human condition he had observed around him in Dublin in the real lives of ordinary people.

In the course of A Portrait which covered the first decades of his life, we see him creating his own individual aesthetic, as opposed to the dictates of the Church. He is already aware of the beginnings of new European writers such as Ibsen, and leaves Ireland to live mostly in poverty, but at liberty to seek

nourishment from other cultures.

The novel eventually published in 1916, contains some of the most dramatic scenes in modern literature. 'imaginative and grace-ful...Jimmy Fay's direction of this in-house production at the New Theatre in Dublin plays a great part in the success with its quirky and highly visual approach.' Emer O' Kelly, Sunday Independent, Thankfully the producers were not overly cautious or afraid to sully the original work by editing some-what, as otherwise there would have been no chance the play could express so many of the original ideas. If anything, it is restorative and most definitely alludes throughout to

A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST

the simultaneous uni-versality and localism at the heart of Joyce's writing. With a rela-tively long run in The New Theatre, there's no excuse not to see it.' Aoife Ryan, entertain-ment.ie 'Wonderful...the production manages to become its own piece of art, drawing inspiration from Joyce but also finding its own feet too.'Kate O' Connor, Quality Waffle, 'At times unsettling, always en-thralling...there are powerful performances from the entire ensem-ble.' ADD A BURST OF FRESHNESS TO YOUR WARDROBE

Put a spring in your step this season with pretty paisley prints, florals & lace designs all available at Heatons stores nationwide and online at www.heatonsstores.com. With soft tones of rose pink, blue and lilac in contrast with some strong prints, the new collection from Heatons definitely delivers a fresh new look for the season ahead.

Safari khaki and cream are two on-trend colours this season with Heatons offering zip detail shorts (€16.00) in khaki, and a slub knit with jacquard detail (€25.00) in cream. Pair them up perfectly with cut out shoe boots (€25.00) and a metallic look straw bag (€15.00) for a causal daytime look. For Saturday lunch with the girls, team up a pretty paisley print dress (€25.00) with cut out shoe boots (€25.00) and a shoulder bucket bag (€15.00) for a great look. For the office this spring, pair up an on trend kimono dress (€18.00) and animal print flats (€13.00), for a chic work look & simply add killer heels for after work drinks.

After months of wrapping up, add some spring freshness to your wardrobe with floral prints and a colour palette of soft pastels. For a classic look, match boyfriend jeans (€25.00) with an embroidered detail blouse (€18.00) and stud detail courts (€25.00). Heatons’ delicate print long line dress (€25.00) will look great on all shapes - a dress that can translate from a day in the office, to a night on the town or lunch in the park. Pair with two tone ankle strap sandals (€18.00) to complete this look. For something more daring, try Heatons’ Aztec jacquard skirt (€20.00) and two tone ankle strap sandals (€18.00) – to keep the look summer fresh, simply add a lace three quarter length sleeve top (€16.00) and a boucle bead shoulder jacket (€29.50).

Print on print is still a big look this season and Heatons offers popping blues and racing reds to bring the look to life. A perfect look for a night on the town, team Heatons’ paisley print skinny jeans (€20.00), embroidered tassel top (€18.00), wide ankle strap shoe (€18.00) and cross body quilted bag (€13.00). A paisley print dress (€25.00) is a summer essential, and to add inches to long brown legs, add red platform wedges (€20.00) and complete the look with a shoulder bucket bag (€15.00).

For overall impact this season, why not try a colour injection with a red zip front kimono dress (€18.00) & add a little detail to the mix with a jacquard print clutch bag (€12.00)

Miss All Things BeautifulHappy spring everyone. Weather wise we haven’t got off to the best start but hopefully with these

looks you can add some Spring vibes to your wardrobe. I’m a student so I love a bargain so anything you see here is cheap and cheerful. Get the looks you want for the budget you have.

1FLORAL

PATTERNS

The biggest winner for me this season will be floral patterns. I

absolutely love this print because its nice and girly. Print will be big

in general this season and nothing will dress up a drab outfit then a cute floral clutch. This clutch is only €21 from River Island, and will

make you feel instantly girly. Both dresses are

from ASOS and are both under €20. Bargain!

2 CROP TOPS

Ok, the catch to this look is you need the

body to be able to pull it off. If you feel confident showing your mid drift

then this look is for you, if you’re not so

confident about baring the bulge you have a few weeks to get into

shape as this trend will be big for the summer

also. Penneys have every style and color

crop top one could want and start from only €4. Get to the gym ASAP lol!

4WHITE SLACKS

I love love love this look. So classy. Very big on the catwalk and New Look was the first to jump on

this bandwagon. I’m dying to try this look.

Perfect for a night out, teamed up with a pastel crop top and floral clutch. Oh how

on trend you will look.

2BLOCK HEELS

Block heels made a brief appearance on the runway last year and was

slowly introduced into out wardrobe in late winter 2014. I love this look

and wearing either a boot, platform or open toe sandal you can match it with

anything. Both these looks can be found on Boohoo.com

for less than €50.

To see some more spring 2014 looks get over to my FB blog page, Miss All Things Beautiful. I will be

trying out some of this seasons looks and finding you the bargains to save trudging through the rails! x

Azran Legacy sticks to that tried-and-tested template. There’s an overarching mystery to solve, with several secrets to uncover along the way. Your investigations are regularly interrupted by various crackpots and misfits asking you to solve puzzles, which earn you picarats (currency) for correct answers. Get them wrong, and your picarat tally will be reduced, though this time there are more puzzles that allow you to adjust your answer before committing to a solution. Outside the story, there are episodes that fill in background details on minor characters and incidents, while Layton’s capacious trunk holds three mini-games. In that regard, little has changed.

The puzzles themselves are more skillfully woven into the narrative than before, even if the connections at times can be tenuous - and, at times, faintly ridiculous. Action scenes are twisted into environmental conundrums, as Layton dodges swinging hooks to reach enemy agents, while one flight is interrupted by a swarm of drones, the professor shooting down odd-numbered or uniquely-shaped ones to shake off the rest. It’s essentially the most sedate turret sequence in video game history.

Those riddles that don’t quite fit into the plot are tied into events detailed in newspaper stories accessed from the trunk, encouraging you to pay repeat visits to locations you’ve already mined for puzzles, hint coins and collectable knick-knacks. Meanwhile, two of the three new asides are well worth taking time out for. Nut Roller sees a squirrel pushing a walnut around a 3D grid, rolling boulders and acorns to guide it to the goal tent, in a surprisingly tricky set of challenges. Blooms and Shrooms asks you to reinvigorate withered gardens by positioning flowers with powerful cross-pollination abilities, sparking chain reactions to cover the grids in greenery, without disturbing spore-spitting fungi in the process. Dress Up is the only letdown, a tedious and simplistic aside that tasks you with selecting outfits for various NPCs based on their requests.

Any Layton game lives or dies on the quality of its puzzles and its plot, and thankfully both are well up to scratch. As the last episode of a prequel story, we obviously know the fate of most characters, which invariably means it can’t possibly have the emotive wallop of Lost Future’s finale. Yet the knowledge that this is the last adventure for the professor still makes for an oddly touching climax, and its final act certainly isn’t without its surprises (or, indeed, fan-pleasing cameos). And while a few puzzle ideas repeat themselves - though most are given a fresh contextual twist - this is the first even-numbered Layton whose riddles match up to the first and third games;

Game Reviews By Katie Devereux

Never before have I been more entertained by a film in all my life, especially one that runs for the best part of 3 hours! ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ starring Leonardo Dicaprio is the tale of Jordan Belfort, an honest, innocent stock broker who is soon corrupted by the greed that money brings. “The way I saw it, their money was better off in my pocket – I knew how to spend it better”

It’s safe to say that this film is not one for those of you who are easily offended! The film runs rife with swearing, sex, drugs, some more swearing and just about as much nudity as one person can handle. It tells the story of an honest working man, which inevitably turns into a tale of his demise. A must watch in our books!

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy

The Wolf of Wall StreetMovie Reviews

PictureHouse celebrate after latest single playlisted by BBC Radio 2

Immage from: http://www.seamovies.com/

indeed, it’s arguably the finest outing since the original trilogy.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy brings a great series to a close in fine style. It doesn’t take many risks with the established formula, but its story is engaging, intelligently written and compelling to the end.

Local band PictureHouse are celebrating their new single Rules of Science being playlisted on BBC Radio 2. Taken from the evolution album, the single version of the song is produced by Adam Kviman (Jewel, Eagle Eye Cherry) in Sweden and Mixed by Pete Glenister (Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, Bryan Ferry and Tiny Tempah) in London.

Front man Dave Browne said that this is a song which has at it’s heart “the message of hope against despair “I will find you” no matter what the circumstances, even rules of science will be broken”, Rules of Science was co-written by Browne with Lasse Anderson who music purists will know as the son of Abba’s Stig Anderson but also has a rich musical background himself having written Emilia’s Big Big World in 1998 amongst other europop hits.Dave spoke to Tallaght Express back in October and said “…we have a UK release of our album in February” Little did he know it would be such a success!

Best known for the hit singles “Sunburst”, “Heavenly Day”, “Everybody Loves My Girl”, “Somebody Somewhere”, the band toured extensively with the likes of The Corrs, The Saw Doctors, Bon Jovi, Meatloaf, Marillion, Mel C and many more earning them legions of fans including Elton John who bought 50 copies of the band’s Karmarama album for his friends and family after seeing them at a festival in London.

Evolution has had its own Irish release already, achieving great acclaim and full houses around the country. The band appeared live at HMV Henry Street on Feb 21st and you can go see them in The Sugar Club on March 4th.

Bipolar Empire are Tallaghts up and coming music group. In recent times they have become very popular so I felt it necessary to do an interview to try get to know the band a bit better. I interviewed their guitarist, Mark – Here’s what he had to say;

1. Tell me a bit about yourself and how the band was formed ?

Well im Mark and I’m from Tallaght, as are the rest of the band. The band was more or less formed at Oxegen festival a few years back, then we went to a mental asylum and rescued Cal, our drummer. (Laughs)

2. Tell me about the music you used to listen to when you were younger that inspired you ?

I think the earliest music I ever listened to was Michael Jackson when I bought the ‘bad’ lp in Windsor market when I was a kid. Then I started to get into The Beatles and The Beach Boys and lots of other stuff.

3. What is your earliest memory of being interested in music/performing?

My earliest memory is playing a block of LEGO like a guitar... (Money was tight in those days) when I was about 13 I picked up the guitar and decided I wanted to get up and play it onstage.

4. How would you describe your style/genre? Do you play a lot of cover songs or is it mostly originals?

Bipolar Empire’s style is harmonic rock music with a kind of poppyish feel. We play mostly original stuff but on rare occasions at certain gigs we might through in a cover eg Jackie Wilson-Higher and Higher which we recorded before for charity.

5. What would you say is your biggest achievement in regards to your performing so far?

Our biggest achievement so far has been getting to play in places I never thought I would, for example, Brazil and Russia. Future hopes are to be successful in so far as making music my career and obviously sell out stadiums across the world!

6. What’s your favourite memory of performing?

My favourite memory of performing is

The Burning Question:

Do you prefer the feeling of wearing new Socks or the Cold Side of the Pillow?

Daniel, 21, Tallaght – Definitely new socks! They just put me in a good mood for the rest of the day!

Joleen, 25, Bolbrook – I’d prefer the cool side of the pillow! It’s a life saver when you’re too warm in bed, it cools you right down but brings your comfort right back up!

David, 18, Kingswood – I always wear two pairs of socks but I love how new

ones feel!

Sandra, 38, Tallaght – I don’t usually wear socks because I always wear high heels but I’ve never really payed attention to the cold side of the pillow either, you’ve caught me out with that one!

Vanessa, 22, Firhouse – That’s a really tough one to decide but I’d probably say the cold side of the pillow because I basically live in my bed!

Tallaghts Top 10Things Your Kids Have Taught You

10. Speak your mind freely9. Live in the moment8. Rest when you need to – Everything else can wait7. Stop being afraid of everything6. Laugh as much as you can – even if it’s considered immature5. It’s ok to be curious about things4. Be generous and give selflessly3. Go with your gut instinct2. Always be kind, even if you don’t know the person. A smile goes a long way1. Love uncontrollably

Interview with Mark from Bipolar Empire hearing a packed out crowd at Oxegen singing our song back to us … Another is when a dog ran onstage during a festival and bit Joe (our bass player)s leg and wouldn’t let go for 3 songs!

7. Is there any advice you would give to anyone hoping to start a career in music? Someone that would be in the same place as you were at the

beginning?

My advice would be to be to make sure you enjoy whatever music your doing and try not to make it like work. Also if it’s original music you are interested in try to stick at it as long as possible.

Please mention to your readers that our Facebook is Bipolar Empire and to check out some of our songs on Youtube, such as ‘Feel That you own it’, ‘Why So Sad’ and ‘Tempomanic’

Gúna Nua Theatre Company in association with Civic Theatre, Tallaght premieres and tours Paul Meade’s new drama which explores one man’s struggle to find himself in post-boom Ireland. The play tours to 9 venues opening at Civic Theatre Tallaght March 4 – 9, touring nationwide until March 29.

Next month marks 15 years of the Civic Theatre and together with award-winning Gúna Nua Theatre Company, they are celebrating this landmark by producing a new work, Faith, written by Paul Meade. The

play tells the story of Michael, a Dublin salesman who has recently been made redundant, played by actor Don Wycherley, well known for his portrayal of Father Cyril Mc-Duff in the TV hit series Father Ted – Wycherley acts out a thrilling role with an interesting twist of fate.

In the play, Michael battles to cope with the stresses of redundancy and a new role as a stay-at-home husband. Faith follows his story after he meets charismatic friend, Chris [Michael Glenn Murphy] who offers him some new hope in friendship and a new job. However, as this male bonding develops into impromptu games of football and discussions on the meaning of life, back at home there’s still a mort-gage to be paid and a family to be looked after. Michael’s new-found optimism and low-paid employment don’t wash well at home with wife Maeve [Jennifer O’Dea]. He soon finds himself with a serious dilem-

ma. The scene is set for confron-tation between Michael’s domestic responsibilities and the survival of his sense of self, particularly his sanity.

With a stellar Irish cast support-ing Wycherley, who’s other roles include Raymond in Bachelors Walk and Fr. Aidan O’Connell in Ballykissangel, Joel Schumacher’s Veronica Geurin and Neil Jordan’s Michael Collins; Wycherley is accompanied on stage by Michael Glenn Murphy one of Ireland’s well known stage actors who has recently appeared as Capulet in the award-winning director Conor

Hanratty’s version of Romeo and Juliet for Second Age The-atre Company. TV roles include STV’s Taggart and BBC’s Silent Witness. Playing Michael’s wife Maeve is actress Jennifer O’Dea known for her RTE film role in The Officer from France starring Adrian Dunbar, BBC NI’s Jumpers and hit TV series Ballykissangel.

Darkly comic and at other times deeply unsettling Faith sets out to explore one man’s psycho-logical trauma and confusion in post-recession Ireland and is not to be missed.

Helpless – Avonbeg

Dear Helpless,I’m sorry to hear that you and your boyfriend are having some difficulties. If something like this has happened very quickly then I would think that something in his life or the relationship has changed suddenly. I know that you have said you have talked to him, but maybe it will be easier to talk after you have identified

the problem directly.Be sure to not sound accusing while talking to him because this can cause some upset and put a strain on communications. Talk to him in a calm environment and progress slowly through the conversation because if you bombard him with questions then you may force up his barriers. I wish you luck and I hope this has helped!Tina.

Dear Tina,I get so bored sitting at home when my friends are busy. It gets to the point where I get annoyed because I have nothing to do! How can I over come this?Fed Up – Tallaght

Dear Fed Up,You need to learn to enjoy your own company, maybe go for a walk in your local park, take yourself out for lunch or go to the cinema! You don’t need other people to validate you. Even start some new hobbies like learning to play an instrument, knitting, reading or join a fitness class and make even more friends! There are no limit to your possibilities, you just always need to set yourself some mini goals. I hope this has helped!Tina.

Local TD Frances Fitzgerald, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, has welcomed the recent meeting hosted by South Dublin Council to provide ideas for Tidy Towns, saying “this gives local groups the tools to have their best year yet in 2014”.

Minister Fitzgerald added: “The work carried out by Tidy Towns groups is so vital, not only in terms of beautifying our neighbourhoods - it actually improves the quality of life of local residents.

“I will support these wonderful groups in any way I can. To that end, I have written to the Council asking them to give a detailed breakdown of all possible grants and funds available to Tidy Towns groups in 2014, and when these will be available. Investing in Tidy Towns is a no-brainer – every euro invested is returned with interest through the hard work done by volunteers.

“As Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, I wish to extend congratulations to all the young people getting involved in Tidy Towns, in particular Shane Byrne and his colleagues at North Clondalkin Tidy Towns who are doing such great work. Shane made a detailed and impassioned presentation at the Council’s meeting, and I hope plenty of local young people will follow in his footsteps and get involved in 2014”.

Fitzgerald backs local Tidy Towns Groups to have a “clean, green 2014”

to work with and see if it is genuinely suited to you. Everyone is different and there is no point choosing a vegetarian diet when you tuck into a rib eye steak once a week!

DON’T – Expect fast results.

Express Motoring

The arrival of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (fuel consumption combined: 6.0–4.1 litres per 100 km [47–68.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions: 139–109 g/km)* sees BMW expand its portfolio into an-other new model segment. The newcom-er in the premium compact class skilfully blends comfort and functionality of space with the trademark BMW strengths of dynamism, style and elegance. Following on from the Coupe as the second member of the new BMW 2 Series range, the har-moniously proportioned Active Tourer oozes sportiness from every angle. Mea-suring just 4,342 millimetres long, 1,800 millimetres wide and 1,555 millimetres in height, it combines compact dimensions on the outside with a strikingly spacious feel on the inside, making it perfectly suited to cope with the growing challeng-es of urban mobility.

New turbocharged engines with three and four cylinders, a comprehensive package of BMW EfficientDynamics measures and the extensive connectivity provided by BMW ConnectedDrive are all formative elements in a driving expe-rience that centres on sporty performance and exemplary efficiency.

Dynamism und functionality of space brought together in classic BMW fashion. In order to achieve a particularly high level of versatility and functionality in the premium compact class, special design concepts are needed. BMW has therefore opted for a sophisticated front-wheel-drive system for the 2 Series Active Tourer that is able to deliver the degree of driver engagement expected of the brand’s models. Together with the long wheelbase of 2,670 millimetres and raised roofline, this configuration enables the room inside to be maximised, resulting in an unprecedented feeling of spacious-ness. Driver and front passenger enjoy a far higher seating position than in a sedan, which affords a commanding all-round view at the same time as making it easier to get in and out. The wealth of storage facilities and the option of a fold-flat passenger seat backrest are just two examples of the interior’s impressive flexibility and cleverly devised layout.

The cabin has a light and spacious feel to it, with all surfaces horizontally struc-tured in a layered look. There is also the

The new BMW 2 Series Active Toureroption of a large panoramic roof that lets light flood into the interior.

The brand identity with its overriding sense of dynamism is clearly present in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer too. It shines through in trademark features such as the slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille at the front end flanked by the distinctive twin circular headlights. The short front over-hang in particular is highly unusual for a front-wheel-drive car, and is just as much a classic BMW styling cue as the short overhang at the rear, the long wheel-base, the Hofmeister kink in the rear side windows and the L-shaped rear lights. Crisp contours and an eye-catching swage line at the sides give added impact to the wheel arches and inject the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer with forward thrust even when stationary. Moving inside, the controls for the radio, air conditioning and air vents are angled towards the driver in another unmis-takable BMW design trait.Maximum versatility and functionality. The versatile luggage compartment, whose capacity can be enlarged from 468 to 1,510 litres, and the 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest fitted as standard exemplify this model’s excel-lent everyday prac-ticality. Flexibility is further enhanced by a sliding rear seat, allowing either kneeroom or luggage space to be increased as required. One

particularly smart touch is the foldable boot floor that conceals a storage compartment with a handy multifunction tray. The rear backrest can be adjusted to offer either added comfort for the three rear seats or extra luggage space. Access to the luggage compartment couldn't be easier thanks to the large, broad, wide-opening tailgate, which can furthermore be optionally specified with pushbutton automatic opening and

closing or the Smart Opener function for supreme ease of operation with a quick flick of the foot. Figures are provisional and have not yet been officially confirmed. The estimated fuel consumption figures have been cal-culated as per the ECE text cycleFor more information please visit www.bmw.ie

SPORT

By Lisa Haskins

This week four year old Merryn Lacy went to watch the Irish Rugby team train and made it her mission to grace the players with her adorable presence later on that day.

The team had a lot of time for Merryn and asked “how she was doing”. There is no doubt this little lady was cheering on our boys in green on Saturday afternoon when Ireland played against England. Merryn, who has stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer, is currently undergoing frontline treatment in Crumlin. Merryn finished her 12th round of Chemotherapy on the 16th of February.

Her family aim to send her to the USA for further treatment which alone will cost €100k. There is a 70% chance of relapse also and this treatment can cost up to 500k! Neuroblastoma has a high possibility of relapse and with treatment options

Shamrock Rovers Football Club held a press conference on the 11th of February 2014 to formally announce their first division squad and management.

Colin Hawkins is the manager of the Shamrock Rovers First Division team, assisted by Noel White.

The club has currently signed nine players specifically for the First

Division team. These will be joined by members of the current Shamrock Rovers Under 19 team.

The nine players are: Daniel Purdy (former Longford); Liam Traynor, Adam Whelan and Mick Kelly (all former UCD); Chris Lyons (former Bohemians); Conor O’Malley (former Mervue); Ryan Coombes and Kevin Knight (both former Bray) and Corie Treacy from junior football. You might remember Corie played for the Hoops before under Pat Scully.

We at Tallaght Express would like to wish the new Shamrock Rovers First Division team all the best for the season ahead.

Tackling Cancer: Valiant Merryn (4) meets the Irish Team

in Ireland for cases of relapse being very limited; parents are faced with the huge costs of seeking treatment further afield in Europe or the USA.

Getting support from some of Ireland’s best known actors and sportspeople including; Colin Farrell, Peter Coogan and Katie Taylor: Merryn Lacy is continuing to work her way through these difficulties and donated prizes such as Katie Taylor’s World Championship shorts and vest will be up for auction to help raise funds for Merryn.

“We have some auction items; we managed to get a good bit of stuff off Katie as she is Merryn’s patron.”

“U2 gave us a signed limited edition vinyl signed by Bono with a letter of authenticity. We got a signed guitar off Danny from The Script also!” said Stephen Guerin, who is a close friend to the Lacy family.

I spoke to Luke Clerkin about Teen-Line, a helpline for teenagers who are struggling to cope with some issues they may be having. Here’s what he had too say;

When was Teen line founded? It was founded in the mid 2000’s after Maureen Bolger lost her son. She wanted to give an outlet to young people who were feeling the same as he may have been feeling. She realised there was no helpline for teenagers, just for children and adults but not for inbetweeners, as she calls them.

How did the Never Alone Busking come about, I know it was the anniversary recently.Well, Gavin Doyle and myself recorded a song for Teen-Line and decided to go busking so we could pay the sound engineer, Cian Donohoe from Block C. We didn’t want to see him do it for free, even though he offered to. So we went out to temple bar, just 4 of us and we met with others who I kind of pulled off the street as they were walking by and then it just evolved really.

Was the Busking a one time thing or has it been done a few more times? No, it was something we did a lot over the past year, raising over 5000 euro from the busking alone. We formed a collective with six or so musicians which quickly turned into 60. We built up a following and on the anniversary, they all returned to support us and most of them were teenagers. We gained help from some really talented up and coming musicians like Hidden Plans from Ballyfermot, Second Harmony from Crumlin and Bagels from Dundrum, to just name a few and having teenagers like them represent Teen-Line was amazing! They set a huge example for other teens!

Tell me about louder voices?

Well, Louder Voices was set up by Patrick Ward and myself as a college project. We have to run an event and we decided to do it for Teen-Line, the aim of Louder Voices itself, is to give a louder voice to those who need it. As Teen-Line already holds a place in my heart and since Patrick is still a Teenager, it just felt right. I aim to help out other charities and musicians as well because there are a lot of musicians who need to be given the platform to perform! But for now we’re running an event in The Unitarian Church on the 1st of March, it’s called ‘Louder Voices for Teen-Line Ireland. It’s an all ages gig with some amazing acts playing like Mongoose, 48:Hours, Second Harmony, Find Home and more. Doors open 5.30 pm! Facebook.com/LouderVoicesIreland

Do you think there should be more organisations like Teen line available? There are plenty more to be honest, it’s just there’s not enough awareness raised. Awareness means PR and PR means money, so I just think once funds are raised for charities; you’ll hear a lot more about them. Also volunteers play a huge part, so if you want to hear more about these organisations go out and do something and help them become known and by doing that, you’re saving lives!!

Why do you think there is still a huge stigma attached to mental health disorders and how do you think people can over come this? To be honest I don’t think there is as much of a stigma as there was around 3 years ago, people have began talking a lot more about because of people like us and the celebrities like Bressie who have spoken out about their own illnesses. Slowly but surely there will be no stigma, it’s going to take a huge team effort but it can be done! All the charities out there that fight to get rid of it, should work together instead of separately because they all want the same thing and there’s power in numbers!

Are there any future fund raising plans you’d like to share with us? I only have Louder Voices at the moment and then I plan to take a step back for a few months to refresh but I’ll be back with some even bigger ideas and a bigger drive to fulfil my goals for Teen-Line and mental health!

How can someone get involved with the organisation to help raise money? You can contact Teen-Line on [email protected] or [email protected] and they’ll get back ASAP. The number for Teen-line is 1800833634, it is free phone, non judgmental, confidential and they are there to listen, no matter how big or small the problem.
