VOL. LX NO. 6 JUNE 2020 CHRIST HALL KOZHIKODE From the Provincial’s Desk STAY INTERCONNECTED! Dear Friends in the Lord, Five years ago, on 24 May 2015, Pope Francis signed the Encyclical letter Laudato Si. In the context of the pandemic, the call of Laudato Si is very relevant. It continues to remind us to care for our common home where everything is interconnected. Environmental issues, climate change, migration, poverty and a host of other issues cannot be seen in isolation. The pandemic and the continued lockdown make us aware how deeply interconnected we are. The Communication Desk of the Assistancy Development Office has circulated relevant materials to celebrate the Laudato Si week. The current situation has forced us to function differently at least for some more time. In the midst of uncertainties, fear and anxiety that loom large, let us be reminded of the dictum of St Ignatius: Fear does not come from God. E.P. LOYOLA, ALUVAThe most significant event of the month took place on 31st

May, Pentecost Sunday. During the solemn Eucharistic Celebration that evening Fr Rachans Lukose assumed charge as the Novice Master & Superior. We wished Fr Rachans God’s abundant blessings and remembered

with gratitude the services of Fr Jose Jacob as Superior & Novice Master during the past eight years. Earlier in the month, we had a three-day Art Workshop under the guidance of Fr Roy Thottathil, and he awakened the artist in each one of us. On 14th we observed a day of fast & abstinence following the call of Pope Francis. It was followed by our monthly recollection guided by Fr Abraham Pallivathukkal. Fr Palli has all along been a great guru & benefactor to Loyola Community. We will surely miss his nourishing visits now that he has moved to Kottayam. As a modest gesture in the Covid-lockdown situation, we

has launched a campaign for the protection of their rights and dignity called #V4Migrants. The campaign hopes to reach as many people as possible to shine a light on the plight of migrant labourers and mobilise resources to help them in their distress.

distributed coconuts from our farm to our less-privileged neighbours. Since we could not go to Pachilakad for our annual holidays, we organized at Loyola itself an eventful week christened ‘Unarvu2K20’. During this week we were privileged to set our own schedule for each day. We conducted several games, an art workshop, quiz competition, collage preparation, movie screening, etc. A special art exhibition was conducted on the last day, and it was inaugurated by Fr Roy Thottathil. We celebrated the birthday of Fr Rachans on 29th with a special Mass and other usual festivities. On the eve of Pentecost, Fr Jose Jacob offered a special thanksgiving Mass, remembering all the blessings he received during his years at Loyola. Fr Rachans Lukose assumed the responsibility as Novice Master and Superior of Loyola Community on 31st during the Eucharistic celebration. Fr Jacob Madukkakuzhy delivered a thought provoking homily on Pentecost and the role of the Holy Spirit in our daily life. Fr Babu Paul has managed to carry out most of the maintenance work of the School and improve the infrastructure facilities. A simple Jesuit residence also is completed. Fr James Morais has been coming over here a few times to do the wiring and the other electrical works and plumbing works professionally and efficiently. Fr James takes care of the affairs at Jamtalibari. The construction of a multi-purpose hall has been completed in the Jamtali Church property. Fr James is also constructing a small residence for the Jesuits and for the Rev. Sisters who have joined us as collaborators. He expects that the purchase of the land at Kailashahar could be done soon and the title deed could be executed immediately once the lockdown is lifted. The

Rev. Sisters also will join us in both the Mission centres as we begin the new academic year after the lockdown. Meanwhile, we await to welcome the two young Jesuits, Schs Dijin and Frankle, to the Tripura Mission.

NEWS FROM NEPAL Nepal has been under lockdown for the past three months. Only a handful of cases were reported in the first few weeks of the lockdown, but later was a sudden spurt. The government of Nepal was quick to blame the migrant labourers returning from India. Online classes for the students continue without any glitch. Our community gets enough time to work in the farm and the garden. Cyclone Amphan, which had wreaked havoc in Bengal, brought us some rain and strong winds for a few days. We get heavy showers intermittently. One of our benefactors from Stockholm has donated some money for relief operations in our locality. We are in the process of reaching out to the needy, especially those without job and lost other means of survival. We had a special prayer service in memory of Fr Adolfo Nicolas, our former Superior General. Though our community remains in good health, we seek your prayers for the people of Nepal as the government is ill-equipped to face a disastrous pandemic like Covid-19.

OBITUARY

FR THOMAS ANTHRAPER, SJ(06.11.1929 – 06.05.2020)

Fr Thomas Antraper left for his eternal reward on May 6th after a brief period of illness. He was conscious and cheerful till the end in spite of the pain he had to suffer. The lockdown prevented the big band of his former students, friends and admirers from being present at the funeral service in Christ Hall chapel in Kozhikode. He was laid to rest on the same day.

Fr Anthraper was born at Kadakkarapally in Alleppey district on 06 November 1929 as the youngest son of Mr Job and Mrs Anna. Three of his sisters joined the FCC congregation. During his degree studies at St Joseph’s College, Tirichirappalli he was inspired by the lifestyle of his Jesuit professors and decided to join the Society in 1949. His novitiate formation was at Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur. After his First Vows in 1951, he was sent to Vinayalaya, Bombay, for his two-year Juniorate. He did his philosophy at De Nobili College, Pune and Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur, and his theology at St Mary’s, Kurseong. He was ordained a priest on 19 March 1962 at Kurseong. After his Tertianship at St Stanislaus, Hazaribagh, he made his Final Commitment in 1966 at St Joseph’s High School, Kozhikode. With a B.Ed degree from Mar Theophilis College, Trivandrum, he began his apostolic journey in the field of education. And that remained his chosen field all through his active life.

Fr Anthraper was ever ready and available for whatever mission the Society asked him to take up. With a charming and magnetic personality, he could make an impact on every institution that was entrusted to his care. As a young priest he was appointed Headmaster of Loyola High School, Trivandrum in its infancy (1963-1964). He served at St Michaels Anglo-Indian School, Kannur, Leo XIII High School, Alleppey, and St Josephs Boys High School, Kozhikode, in varied roles as teacher, boarding Director, Headmaster and Rector. In 1984, the Kerala Government honoured

him with the state award for the best teacher of the year. Even after his retirement from school education, he was asked to shoulder various administrative responsibilities in different educational institutions. He served as Rector and Manager at St Xavier’s College, Trivandrum, Superior and Boarding Director at AKJM, Kanjirapally, Superior and Manager at Sarvodaya School, Eachome, and Superior and Manager at St Michael’s Higher Secondary School, Kannur.

It was in St Josephs Boys High School, Kozhikode that he served the longest (17 years), and he was its Headmaster for a long period of 12 years (1974-1986). His students remember him not only as their beloved teacher, but also as their mentor, guide, and friend. When the school celebrated 225 years of its foundation in 2017-18, Fr Anthraper was the centre of all attention. Many of his old students who gathered around him were pleasantly surprised to know that Fr Anthraper remembered most of them by name even after so many years! In spite of his wholehearted commitment to the ministry of education, he was equally interested in the pastoral field and was a much sought-after retreat guide. He was Vicar of Immaculate Conception Church, Azhikode, Kannur for a period of four years, and was director and formator of Jesuit pre-novices at Loyola, Aluva. He continued to be involved in spiritual ministries, especially at Samanvaya, Kanjirapally and at Christ Hall, Kozhikode, till weakening health restrained him.

The words of Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach SJ, former Superior General, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Fr Anthraper in the Society aptly summarize the person: “Father Thomas, you have been a popular teacher and a successful academic administrator, creating a healthy atmosphere of commitment, hard work, responsibility, accountability, co-operation and team work; reaching out to the parents through the students; instilling discipline by means of personal care of each student; helping the young people under your care to find a definite orientation in life; motivating and inspiring them.” Fr Anthraper always responded to the call of the Lord with a great sense of Magis. He lived his deep faith through his unwavering commitment to His mission. A true son of St. Ignatius, Fr Anthraper loved and served the Lord as He deserved. He gave himself without counting the cost and toiled without seeking rest. He was a Jesuit who practised cura personalis and cura apostolica in a balanced way, and “all for the greater glory of God” was his life-mantra. Memories of his warm smile and affectionate gaze remain ever fresh in our minds. May God our Father, who blessed Fr Anthraper with a cheerful and compassionate heart, give him eternal rest!
