THE MANY WAYS A PRESIDENT SERVES HIS CONGREGATION

When the idea of a family BBQ at Beth El first came up, I thought it was a great idea. Maybe a “few” families would come and have an enjoyable Sunday afternoon. Wow! Was I wrong! Over 150 Beth El members ranging from newborns to people in their eighties came out to relax, play basketball, throw a ball, play on the playground and spend time with other members of our shul family. I immediately upon arriving saw Bruce Duboff, Craig Kessler and Gary Shapiro, our Men’s Club volunteers preparing the food

for the day and asked if I could help. Next thing I knew, I was serving hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers to a hungry crowd. I had the easy job, Bruce and Craig took on the task of grilling at a feverish pace.

It was wonderful to see everyone relaxed with smiles on their faces as I greeted them and it was a great feeling to speak to as many people as I could. It was like visiting with cousins you haven’t spoken to in months and picking up your conversation as though you were together last week. That is what our Beth El family is all about. There are people you don’t see every day, but when you see them and start to talk, you feel a wonderful connection.

The best part of serving was that I had a direct view of the intense game on the new Beth El basketball court donated by Beth and Josh Brodkin and Betsy and Peter Fischer. I watched in amazement as our very own Rabbi Krupnick exhibited his basketball skills. After watching him spin a basketball on his finger, I thought about reaching out to the Harlem Globetrotters to see if they needed a new player.

A big yasher koach and todah rabah to Men’s Club for preparing a great dinner and to Shari Smith, our Community Life Director, for organizing this program. It was an absolutely spectacular day for Beth El. Look for our new GAGA Court…coming soon!

AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE BETH EL BOARD OF TRUSTEES

At the most recent Board of Trustees meeting the leadership of our congregation approved the following policy, one that impacts both our clergy and the congregation they serve. The policy and new protocol for Congregation Beth El reads as follows:

Given the large size of our congregation and the demands on our clergy’s time in service of our members, the Beth El Board

of Trustees has put the following policy into effect:

The Beth El Clergy shall only officiate at the weddings and funerals of current Beth El members and their families.

This resolution was unanimously approved by the Beth El Board of Trustees on June 12, 2012

Over the summer we will be implement-ing the Triennial Torah reading cycle here at Beth El and I thought it would be worthwhile to review why we are making this important change. Simply put, our motivation is our love of Torah and all that it represents. I believe that our

sacred literature holds the key to our understanding what it is that your Tradition, our Rabbis and most importantly, our Gd, want from us as Jews. The People of the Book must know what is in The Book. The challenge is that the Torah reading on Shabbat morning is so lengthy that it leaves little time to focus on the meaning of the text and its message for us, the modern readers.

In a Triennial Torah reading cycle the first third of every Torah portion is read in the first year, the second third in the second year and the final third in the third year. We still have seven aliyot and the maftir, but the amount of text read each Shabbat is shorter. The weekday Torah readings, Shabbat afternoon and all Haftarot stay the same. Although many synagogues today have adopted such a system, its roots are very old. The reading of the Torah over a three-year period originated in Israel some 1800 years ago. And while all did not adopt it, the congregations that did use it did so for the same reasons we will. They would read a section in Hebrew and then take time to explain it in Aramaic. In other words, even back then people did not understand the original Hebrew. But, it was more important that the congre-gation understand the meaning of the words and the teach-ings contained therein than it was to read larger amounts of text with little comprehension.

Our goal at Beth El is exactly the same: I want people to be able to understand what they are reading and I don’t simply mean the translation. Often times the translation is not enough. Sometimes it raises more questions than it answers. I want us to have the chance to reflect on the words and their message, too. Therefore, with the added time that a shorter reading will yield we will have more time for explanations. Every week either Rabbi Arnow, Hazzan Pomerantz-Boro or I will prepare a short explanation of a particular verse. Then, prior to its public reading we will draw it to the attention of the congregation thus refocusing those in attendance on the text about to be read. Our comments will not be in the form of question and answer from the congregation, but will rather be insights we have garnered through intensive study prior to the service. In time, congregants may also want to spend time studying sections of Torah in depth and sharing their insights, but for now we, the clergy, will be your guides.

Torah is a closed book until it is read with an open mind and opening our minds and our hearts to Torah in this way will indeed be challenging. That’s because the Torah is not always an easy book to read and interpret even though every word is very important. It will at times be challenging for us, both clergy and congregation, to find a message for modern readers in the ancient words. In a sense, it would

be easier to just read more and focus in on less. But, I don’t think that’s right; I don’t think it is what Gd wants of us. At the end of the day I firmly believe that it is more important to read less and understand more than to read more, but comprehend less.

And, so it is with great excitement and anticipation that I look forward to beginning the Triennial Torah reading cycle this August. I hope that you will plan to come to shul and participate in the learning during Shabbat morning services. “Etz Chaim He…” Torah is indeed a Tree of Life to all who grasp on to it. Come renew your spirit with the life affirming and inspirational message of our wellspring of faith – The Holy Torah.

Beth El Sisterhood Wins Women’s League Award

Mazel Tov to Beth El Sisterhood on winning the Women’s League Award of Honor for exemplary devotion to the Torah Fund Campaign. This award, marking the fulfillment of Sisterhood’s financial goal to the 2011 campaign, was presented at the Mid Atlantic Regional Torah Fund Event held at Beth El on March 18th.

The Torah Fund Campaign supports The Jewish Theologi-cal Seminary (New York), the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles) and the Schecter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem). This is our way of preserving and pro-moting a strong future for Conservative Judaism by ensuring its future leaders. These institutes train rabbis, cantors, educators and lay leaders for Conservative synagogues. Our Rabbis Krupnick and Arnow and our Hazzan are graduates of JTS. The women of Beth El’s Sisterhood support Torah Fund through annual donations and through the purchase of Torah Fund cards. Thanks to all for your support.

Torah Fund Cards are perfect for any occasion (i.e., Simchas, New Baby, Get Well, Sympathy) and can be purchased for $4 each at our Gift Shop or by contacting one

of our Torah Fund Secretaries:

Please contact Ann Miller or Barbara Sharofsky with any questions about Torah Fund.

I am writing this column with much excitement as I take on my new leadership role in Sisterhood. I am

extremely honored and humbled to serve as the new Beth El Sisterhood President and I am really looking forward to work-ing with my new Board, as well as other Beth El leaders to bring some new and innovative programs to our Shul.

Before we look ahead, I must look back and thank Leslie Bres-lau for the incredible work she has done over the past two years as President. Leslie, our Sisterhood can’t thank you enough for all the hours you put in and I feel very fortunate to succeed you and continue on the path that you and your predecessors have paved.

I want to introduce the Sisterhood Board for 2012-2013:

My new Board and I are already hard at work planning some great events for next year. Our opening meeting will be Beth El Sisterhood at “The Ranch” and will take place on Thursday evening September 13th at the backyard “Ranch” of Sharon

Sackstein. The topic will be Staying Healthy – Mind, Body and Soul and will feature healthy recipes, easy exercises to do at home and some

tips to reduce stress in your life. Lots of other fun events will be planned throughout the year.

Please watch your mailbox for our summer membership mailing which will have more details about our Fall programs, as well as your dues envelope for the upcoming year. One of my goals for this year is to try to get more women to join Sisterhood, so please fill out your membership form and send it back right away. You don’t want to miss out on any of the fun! Sisterhood does so many vital things for our shul, as well as the community and your membership dues help to support all of these endeavors.

May was a very busy month with food donations for the Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantry. It was Beth El’s designated month and our congregation really came through! We donated over 5 shopping carts full of food and $350 worth of gift cards to purchase more food.

During the summer months we are collecting backpacks and school supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of Camden. Also, beginning in September, look for more community outreach opportunities for all of to get involved!

We hope you are having a wonderful summer!

It is with great enthusiasm that I write to you as the new Men’s Club President. I am looking forward to the next couple of years. We have a dedicated group of men on our board and will work hard to grow our Men’s Club.

For those of you who don’t know me, let me tell you a little about myself. I grew up in East Brunswick, NJ. I was very active in USY and held executive board positions in both my chapter and region. After college and a few years of work, I married Jennifer Jagust. After several years of living in Pittsburgh, Jennifer and I came back to the east coast in 2000 and moved to Cherry Hill, NJ. We have been members of Beth El ever since. We have 3 children: Yoni-15, Adina-13 (she just had her Bat Mitzvah in April) and Shira-8.

I would like to thank our immediate Past President Ray Katz, for his past two years of service. Ray worked hard to keep us moving forward. If you know Ray like I do, then you know that while he will no longer be President, he will still be active in Men’s Club as well as in teaching our Hebrew High School students and in general Beth El happenings. Thanks Ray.

In the next two years, I am optimistic that together, we can accomplish the following:

Increase our membership – we have approximately 950 families in our shul, but far less than half of the families have a member in our Men’s Club.

Enhance our programming – in today’s world, it is amazing to me just how many demands each of us has on our time. But, even so, we can put 1-2 programs together every month, especially in the winter months, which can bring us

together to learn and have fun.

Increase our fundraising – if we are successful with the first 2 items, this third item will be successful as a direct result.

If anyone is interested in becoming more involved in Men’s Club or has a good idea for programming, please send me an email or walk up to me in Beth El to tell me. We can always use more volunteers and more ideas.

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming Men’s Club event and getting to know you better.

What a night!!! When Sam and I entered the parking lot and saw all the cars I was thrilled. I couldn’t wait to get into the social hall. The line to register was long, but so much fun.

The back of the room was filled with pictures from the Camden Sam and I knew growing up. I must say I made a very cute Queen Esther in front of my house on 27th Street.

The many tables around the room were festive with tulips and sweets strewn on them.

Norma Kamis did a wonderful job planning this event. Speakers included Ruth Shreibstein Bogutz, whose slides showed Camden from the early part of the twentieth century to the 1970’s. All those present knew Camden to be a warm wonderful place to grow up, shop, do business, and enjoy both the Jewish and non-Jewish community. When Judge Dick Hyland spoke fondly of his families involvement with Beth El on Park Blvd as the “Shabbos Goy”, it served as an example of ecumenical nature of our community. Lynne Natal Weinstein also shared her memories of her family experience in Camden.

Phil Cohen, author of “Camden: A City with a Heart and a Whole Lot of Soul”, spoke of the cultural and history of Camden. “Jewish South Jersey” co-authored by Allen Myers offered personal reflections of the old neighbor-hood. The cover pictures the fruit and vegetable store of Samuel Asbell, my husband’s namesake and a dead ringer for Sam, mustache and all.

There was time after the program for noshing and catch-ing up. It was a warm, wonderful reminder of what has gone by.

My thanks to Rabbi Krupnick for his remarks. As always, he brings all the elements of a program together. Also, to Shari Smith and Margie Blum (also a Camden girl) for making all this happen at Beth El.

By the time this is read it will be summer, which is fitting since the warmth of that night continues .

For this Camden girl and Sam it was a proud night, I had a fabulous time and hope there will be a next time.

News from the Early Childhood Center (winner of the Solomon Schechter Gold Award)

Shalom- From the Early Childhood Director As most of you know by now, July 31, 2012 will be my last day as Director of the Early Childhood Center. I have been extremely fortunate in my life. For my entire career- first as a teacher for 6 years and then as a Director/Principal for 35 years, I can say that I have loved what I do.

Who could not love working with children, teaching them, guiding them and playing with them? What a joy to see their delighted faces when something makes them smile! How incredible to watch as a child takes his first steps or read her first word! Or, feel the warmth of a child’s body as he or she clings to you for comfort or just a hug!

I have had the privilege of doing just that for every day of my adult life and I have you to thank for it. Yes, you are the parents, both here at Beth El for 10 years and parents at other schools previously, who entrusted your children to me. To all of you and on behalf of all the other educators, I thank you.

I have also been fortunate to work with the most amazing team of professionals. Rabbi Krupnick , Rabbi Arnow, (Rabbi Arnowitz up until last year), Hazzan Pomerantz-Boro, Hanina, Yaffa and Shari, along with the support staff of Belle, Shirley, Flossie, Margie, Laura and Pat, lead the synagogue and by extension, the school and people with whom anyone would be proud to work, learn from and share ideas. They keep me grounded to the task ahead and help me see the broader picture. And, I am proud to say that they are all my friends. Thank you for all you do and being there for me through the best and worst of times.

Last but not least, are the over 30 teachers who make sure the ECC runs on a daily basis. These dedicated women are the front liners, planning and implementing the curriculum as well as giving the love and attention to the cherubs you send us. They sup-port me and the school in ways too numerous to list. These women are my family away from home.

I will miss you all. But most of all I will miss the children, the ones who wave as they walk in, or ask me to tie their shoelaces, or who tell me about their new toys or who just stop in my office to give me a good-night hug and kiss as they leave at the end of a day.

To all of you at Beth El, I say “Shalom U’lihitraot” and thank you for enriching my life over the past 10 years.

TRAINING PROVIDED

Each Shabbat morning a congregant stands at the Shabbat entrance to our building to welcome people as they arrive. These arrivals may be old friends, they may be attending a simcha or they may be "synagogue shopping."

The Greeter's responsibility is to welcome people cordially, wish them a "Shabbat Shalom" (if appropriate), direct them to the sanctuary, the coat room, etc., or offer other assistance as needed. She/he will be stationed at the entrance from 9:15am until 10:35am. At that time the greeter may join the rest of the congregation (if they wish).

A Beth El Board member is usually assigned for a specific Shabbat, but we often need substitutes. For further infor-mation or to volunteer, you may email or phone Mort Ka-novsky at [email protected] or 856.424.9372.

Do you have a few hours of week to help out Sisterhood?

We need volunteers to work in the Judaically Yours Gift Shop.

Please contact Linda Lazarow at: (856) 424-3893 or [email protected]

Caring for Mourners Committee Nihum Avelim, needs volunteers as well. If you are interested in assisting Beth El members with their shiva needs (setting up for shiva, clean up, bringing meals, etc). Please contact Barb Collik: (856) 321-1415 or [email protected]
