Officials with the Environmen-tal Protection Agency say theagency is still working to meet itspreviously announced targetyears for when it hopes to decideupon final plans to clean up thevarious Sherwin-Williams relatedsuperfund sites in theVoorhees/Gibbsboro area.

For those Voorhees residentsconcerned about the health ofKirkwood Lake, which sits at thebottom of the Sherwin-

Williams/Hilliards Creek super-fund site, that means a decisionfrom the EPA regarding how thelake should be cleaned is stillsomewhere in 2018 or 2019.

Records of Decision, orRODs as they are often referredto, are the final public documentsreleased by the EPA that detailthe specific cleanup methods thatmust be used to remedy a super-

fund site.Once the EPA finalizes a ROD,

the agency then works to imple-ment the remedies outlined with-in.

The first ROD the EPA an-nounced for the Sherwin-Williams related superfund sitesin the area was presented to thepublic in September of last yearand related to a plan to clean uplead-contaminated soil from morethan 30 residential properties atthe Sherwin-Williams/HilliardsCreek Superfund site in Voorheesand Gibbsboro.

The cause of the environmen-tal issues in the area dates back tothe mid-1800s, when John Lucas& Company, and later Sherwin-Williams, operated a paint var-nish manufacturing facility inGibbsboro until 1977.

Kids in Voorhees might be usedto going to the library to work oncomputers, but later this month, kids can go to the library andlearn how computers work.

From July 25 through July 29,Voorhees teens and tweens ages11 to 16 can attend a different kindof camp with the Camden CountyLibrary Systems Coding Camp.

Kids will get a chance to learn

basic computer programing byusing Scratch, a free visual com-puter programming language de-veloped by MIT that teaches stu-dents how to program anima-tions, games and more.

Haddon Township branch li-brarian Martha Cannon, who hasa masters degree in computer sci-ence, just got through teaching asimilar camp at the systems Had-don township branch. Cannon

said scientists and educators atMIT designed Scratch to be intu-itive and easy to use for all kids, asit doesnt involve the detailed linesof code and syntax needed formore advanced programming lan-guages.

Instead, Cannon said the pro-gram is visually based, so chil-dren move around multi-coloredblocks that perform the basicfunctions and commands of com-puter programing, and by assem-bling those blocks in different

ways, theyre able to build theirown programs.

Cannon said kids can alsoshare the programs they createwith their peers, and they workcollaboratively to comment on,and learn from, what others havedone.

It focuses on programming in-teractive stories and games, so itssomething children want to do,and they can see whats happen-

ing quickly, which always helpswhen learning something new,Cannon said.

Cannon said a goal of the li-brary has always been easy ac-cesses to information, and shefeels more people in society shouldlearn how the technology they useevery day such as computers andcell phones actually work.

We want people to go frombeing consumers of technology tobeing creators of technology, andthere is a difference there, Can-

non said. Languages likeScratch can start taking themover that hump.

Noting the gender gap that ex-ists within science, technology, engineering and math fields, Can-non specifically invites girls aswell as boys to the camp, so every-one can experience fun program-ming lessons free of intimidation.

Cherry Hill native encouraging readersto become unSTUCK with debut bookShira Taylor Gura will speak about her book, Getting unSTUCK, in Voorhees

    By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun

About four years ago, CherryHill native Shira Taylor Gura wastrying to write a children's bookcalled Stuck in the Muck. Theidea for thebook revolvedaround a mon-key who gotstuck as he

swung fromtree to tree inthe jungle. The bookwould talkabout how themonkey gotstuck becausehe was stuck on his own emotionsand unable to perform an actionto move on with his life.

Not long after she started writ-ing, Gura herself became stuck.

    After countless hours of work-

ing on what was a 16-page book,Gura realized she was stuck in asimilar way the monkey was inher book. As an outlet, she decid-ed to start a blog.

I just started blogging aboutmy experiences, Gura said. Atsome point, I came up with theacronym S.T.U.C.K.

Four years after getting stuckon a children's book, Gura is nowunSTUCK. On June 29, her firstbook, appropriately named, Get-

ting unSTUCK, was publishedand is now available to purchaseon Amazon.com.

Getting unSTUCK is basedoff Gura's blog and details whatGura calls the S.T.U.C.K. method.S.T.U.C.K. is an acronym for stop, tell, uncover, consider and O.K.,and focuses on freeing a person'smind from powerful and influen-tial emotions.

Gura was born and raised inCherry Hill. She graduated fromCherry Hill High School East in

1992 and then attended RutgersUniversity, where she earned abachelor's degree in psychology.Gura later earned a master's de-gree in occupational therapy witha focus on mental health from

Boston University. Shortly there-after, Gura got a yoga certifica-tion and started a company inCalifornia where shebrought yoga class-es to technolo-gy companies.During that time,Gura said shebegan to learn alot about mindful-ness and medita-

tion.In 2002, we movedback to Cherry Hill,Gura said. We livedthere for about six years. It was during those sixyears that I started creat-ing workshops for the communi-ty.

Gura credited her experiencesand support from many friendsfor making her blog such a suc-

cess. After struggling with writ-ing Stuck in the Muck, Gura ad-

mits she never thought her blogwould become as big as it did.

People were identifyingwith all of my stories, shesaid. Its a human experi-ence. We all get stuck onemotions, our frustrations, our desires.

People who I didn'teven know across the

world were writing backand saying, I get it,that happened to me,'she added. It was

very encouraging.Over time, Gura's family and

friends started encouraging herto try to write another book, thistime aimed for adults and basedon her blog. Through Facebook,

the facility was responsible forleaking tanks and improper stor-age and handling of materialsthat resulted in spills and releas-es, as well as direct discharge ofmaterials to surrounding water-ways.

The area where the EPA is cur-rently working to finalize its nextROD is whats known as theRoute 561 Dump Site in Gibbs-boro, which is 700 feet to the

southeast of the former manufac-turing plant and was used tohouse discarded waste from thefacility. After dumping ceased atthe area, the site was later partial-ly developed and now includesbusinesses, a vacant lot, a smallcreek and wetlands.

Richard Puvogel, EPA sectionchief of central New Jersey re-mediation, said the remedy theEPA has proposed for the Route561 Dump Site is similar to theremedy selected for the residen-

tial properties last year, as it in-volves excavating about 23,000cubic yards of soil contaminatedwith lead and arsenic.

    However, Puvogel said the plan

is also different in some ways, asit also involves installing a capconsisting of soil or asphalt coverto act as a barrier in parts of the

site to prevent contact of anyresidual elements.

As with the work on the resi-dential properties, the EPA antici-pates the proposed cleanup of theRoute 561 Dump site, if finalized, will be conducted and paid for bySherwin-Williams under EPA su-pervision.

EPA press officer Elias Ro-driguez said EPA officials willalso coordinate with propertyowners during the eventual

cleanup process to minimize in-conveniences such as partial roadclosures and other issues.

From now through July 12,members of the public can sendtheir written comments concern-ing the cleanup of contaminatedsoil at the Route 561 Dump site to:Renee Gelblat, Remedial ProjectManager, U.S. EPA, 290 Broadway19th Floor, New York, New York,10007-1866 or at

[email protected] view the proposed Route 561

    Dump site plan, visitwww.epa.gov/superfund/route-

561-dump.Kirkwood Lake still sits at the

end of the EPAs schedule for de-termining cleanup methods forthe Sherwin-Williams related su-perfund sites in the area, as thelake is farthest downstream andthere could be recontamination ofthe lake upstream. The last pro-

jected date for a ROD for Kirk-wood Lake was sometime in 2018or 2019.

    Were still running along,

shooting for those targets, Puvo-gel said.Puvogel also said the EPA is

still waiting on plans from Cam-den County regarding a countyproposal to pay for and enact a po-tential dredging of the lake.

In April, county officials said itwas their belief the lake neededto be dredged to keep it alive andto prevent sediment from flowingto the Cooper River.

    JULY 612, 2016 THE VOORHEES SUN 9

    Freeholders offer relief for

    families facing childhood

    The Freeholder Board

    has a groundbreaking

    program to assist Cam-

    den County families

    facing the economic

    impact associated with

    a childs catastrophic

    illness.

    One of the most chal-

    lenging situations a

parent could ever face is responding to a

    catastrophic illness affecting their child.

In addition to the emotional toll this

takes on a family, the financial burden

    could be devastating.

In order to provide relief for families

facing these issues, the Camden County

Freeholder Board has become the first in

the state to offer financial assistance for

costs associated with a wide array of

    medical problems.

The program provides the down pay-

ment necessary for items such as pur-

chasing a van to be modified, or

installing stair and chair lifts in thehome. These measures are not only re-

quired for proper accessibility, but they

    are also important improvements

needed to enhance a familys quality of

    life moving forward.

    The Camden County Improvement Au-

    thority (CCIA) will provide meaningful

    financial assistance to Camden County

residents who quality for the states Cat-

astrophic Illness in Children Relief Fund

(CICRF) and are low to moderate incomehouseholds according to HUD guide-

lines. The CCIA will offer the funding in

the form of a loan which will appear as

a lien on the property in question.

The personnel at the CCIA have the ex-

pertise to not only assist families navi-

gate through this difficult time, but to

    also provide the necessary administra-

    tive services requited to

    receive reimbursement

    from the state program.

    The CICRF was estab-

    lished in December of

    1989 as a financial re-

    source to help New Jer-

    sey families cope with

    uncovered medical ex-

    penses for their chil-

dren. The grant program awards a

    one-time maximum amount of $5,000

that is to be used for purchases and im-

    provements required for accessibility.

The county program is a major im-

provement over the state program in

that Camden County can provide financ-

ing in advance of these major purchases.

The state program works as a reimburse-

ment program, placing the initial outlay

of funds solely on the family. The loan

can be paid back to the county once the

family has been reimbursed by the state

    relief fund.

To further assist families, the CamdenCounty Freeholder Board created the Di-

vision of Programming for People with

    Disabilities. For more information the

    programs and services offered, please

she became connected with a newpublishing company called ThreeGems Publishing.

    I wrote the most unconvinc-

ing email, Gura said. I said, I'mnot an author, I'm not a writer, here's my blog.

The publishing companyshowed interest in the idea, andlast fall, Gura began working onthe book. More than eight monthslater, Gura described how excitedshe was feeling as her book wasabout to be released.

In the weeks following the re-lease of Getting unSTUCK,

Gura plans to travel from her cur-rent home, Israel, and speak at anumber of locations in South Jer-sey. She is scheduled to appear atan UnSTUCK Sisterhood Re-treat at Congregation Beth El inVoorhees on Aug. 6. She alsoplans to speak for the Congrega-tion Temple Beth Sholom Sister-hood on Aug. 9 and TempleEmanuel on Aug. 16. Gura is alsohoping to speak in front of other

organizations during a six-weekvisit to the area later this sum-mer.

I'm really experiencing thefeeling of support, she said. That's what I'm excited to feelsomewhat enveloped in the loveand support of friends from myhometown.

The release of the book doesnot mean the end of Gura's blog.It can still be found at www.thes-

tuckmethod.com and she contin-ues to update it with her own per-sonal stories.

It's a tool I now have to use tohelp me get unSTUCK, Gurasaid.

Getting unSTUCK is avail-able for purchase for both printand Kindle at amazon.com. Toread Gura's blog or for more in-formation, visit www.thestuck-method.com.

We think its a valuable pro-gram, and for the world kids are

moving into and growing up, inits preparing them for the fu-ture, he said.
