About 71 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by this vital liquid that allows all plant and animal life to subsist. This week, Tidbits dips its toe in just a few of the world’s bodies of water and gives you some interesting facts about them. • Situated on the border between the United States and Canada and covering a total surface of 80,545 square miles (208,610 square km), the group of five Great Lakes holds more than 20 percent of the world’s surface fresh water. That’s enough water to cover the contiguous 48 states to a depth of 9.5 feet! If you can’t remember their names, a neat little memory aid is HOMES, which puts the lakes in this order — Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. If you want to name them in order from west to east, use the phrase: She Made Harry Eat Onions. • The largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area is Lake Superior, stretching 350 miles long by 160 miles wide. In some places, it reaches a depth of 1,333 feet. The Ojibwe tribe has lived around Lake Superior for over 500 years and calls it “Gitche Gumee,” translating to “big water.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote of the lake in his 1855 poem “The Song of Hiawatha.” Those who remember Canadian folksinger We’re the Solution to your New Year’s Resolution! The Mediterranean Sea takes its name from the Latin word mediterraneus, which translates “in the middle of earth” or “between lands.” This is due to its location between the continents of Africa and Europe. The Bible’s Book of Exodus refers to it as the “Sea of the Philistines.”

1. What is the name for the study of the movement, distribution and quality of water throughout the earth?

2. Water that is fit for human consumption is known by what term?

The body of water that is included as an area of a sea or ocean and is partially enclosed by land can be known by three different names. The largest of this type is a gulf, and the smallest is a cove. The body of water that is in between these two in size is known as a bay.

It was American author, social crit-ic, economist and political commentator ThomasSowellwhomade the followingsage observation: “Much of the social his-tory of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what workedwithwhatsoundedgood.”

Visiting the longest chain of moun-tains on Earth requires some rather special arrangements -- aquatic ones, to be pre-cise. The 10,000-mile-longMid-AtlanticRidge, as its name indicates, is located on theflooroftheAtlanticOcean.Theonlyparts of the chain above water are a few volcanic islands, including Iceland and the Azores. ThosewholiveinFloridaprobablywon’t be surprised to learn that they live in the state with the most instances of light-ning every year. If you travel to Alaska, you can go to the North Pole -- the town of NorthPole, that is. It’s not the real deal, though. The town is actually 1,700 miles south of Earth’s geographic North Pole. “Dreamalittledreamofme”goestheoldsong. This week, Tidbits delves into the world of dreams--whatweknowaboutthem,andwhatwe don’t know! •Sincesleepresearchshowsthatweallspend

about two hours a night dreaming, you’ll spendatotalofaboutsixyearsdreamingoverthe course of your life. Although some dreams seem to go on and on all night, they typically lastonlyfiveto20minutes.

• Whatis thepurposeofdreams?Aphysicianmight say that they are a response to the body’s neural processes that take place during sleep. Apsychologistmightseethemasareflectionof the processes going on in the subconscious. (Freud felt that bad dreamswere the brain’sway of controlling the emotions from life’s disturbing experiences.) A spiritual personmight sometimes see dreams as messages fromGod, angels or from a deceased lovedone.Someoneirologists(scientistswhostudydreams) think that dreams are a way of securing experiencesinourlong-termmemory.

•RapidEyeMovement(REM)sleepisthatstageof sleep when the large muscles of the body become immobile, heart and breathing rates become faster, and brain activity increases. Characterized by the rapidmovement of theeyes, it is at this stage when people dream. REM sleep is usually about 25 percent of an adult’s total sleep, about two hours a night, but itisdividedintofourorfiveperiods.Itusuallybegins about 90 minutes after falling asleep. Althoughpeople do dreamduring non-REMsleep, the most bizarre and vividly recalleddreams are during REM.

• Those peoplewho snore only do so duringnon-REM sleep. About 10 percent of themhave sleep apnea, which causes them to stop

breathingasmanyas300timespernight.• Experiments in REM sleep began about

1952, when scientists noticed that sleepers’ eyes fluttered beneath closed eyelids. Theyinstituted the use of a polygraph machine to record brainwaves. Modern machines monitor eye movements, as the eyes seem to move around to watch images as if on a big screen in the mind.

•Thenexttimeyouaccusesomeoneof“playingpossum,” you should know that it is actuallyimpossible to tell whether someone is awake orsleeping.Somefolkscanevendozeoffwiththeir eyes open and not even know it!

• You won’t recall about 95 percent of yourdreams. It’s the theory of some experts thatthesenseofhavingpreviouslyexperiencedinprecisedetailanexactmomentintime, calleddéjàvu(Frenchfor“alreadyseen”),isduetohaving dreamt about a similar situation, then somehow being reminded of it when awake. It is still not known for certain what causes this curious phenomenon.

•Besuretogetenoughsleep!Ifyoufallasleepless than five minutes after you close youreyes,youaresleep-deprived.(Between10and15 minutes is optimal.) If you are awake for 17 continuoushours, youarealreadyexperiencinga decrease in performance equal to a blood alcohollevelof0.05percent.Sleepdeprivationcontributedtothe1989ExxonValdezoilspilland the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Expertsestimate that it is a factor in one out of every sixfataltrafficaccidents.

• A sleep-deprivedpersonmaybemoreproneto depression, heart disease and hypertension.

Subjects in studies often slur their speechor speak slower than usual and often have difficulty making decisions and focusing ontasks. It seems that women need about an hour more sleep per night than men, which may be part of the reason that women are more susceptible to depression.

• Many children occasionally walk in theirsleep. Sleepwalking is ordinarily a phase inthegrowing-upprocess.Becausepartsof thechild’s brain are immature, dreams can be stimulating enough to cause a youngster to take a nocturnal stroll. About 25 percent of all children have one or more sleepwalking episodes between the ages of 7 and 12, according to sleep researchers.

•Earlymattresseswere large cloth sacksfilledwith wool and straw and held up with ropes stretched in a grid across the bed frame. If the rope was loose, you would tend to roll and sag to the middle. If the rope was stretched tightly, sleep was comfortable. Hence the phrase, “sleeptight.”■

Q: I love the Syfy show “Merlin.” I haven’t seen new episodes on the schedule for a while, and I’m afraid it has been canceled. Please tell me it hasn’t! -- Mark T. in Vermont

A: Don’t worry, Mark. The magical Syfy series will indeed be back for a third season beginning Fri-day, Jan. 7, at 10 p.m. Season three finds the young Merlin (played by Colin Morgan) in increasingly more dangerous and dark battles in his secret quest to protect Prince Arthur (Bradley James) in the fa-bled kingdom of Camelot, where magic is forbidden by King Uther (Anthony Head). They rejoin Morga-na (Katie McGrath) -- who has a dark destiny of her own -- with Angel Coulby as her loyal maid Gwen, and Richard Wilson as wise court physician Gaius. John Hurt returns as the voice of the Great Dragon. ***

A: The cutting-edge drama will be back on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 10 p.m. on TNT. Series star Benjamin McKen-zie gave me the scoop: “It’s going to be the same show you’ve seen before, it’s just going to be more focused on the four principle charac-ters that are left: Ben, Lydia, Sammy and John. It’s a pretty aggressive show; this season it’s really going to double-down on the aggressiveness. It’s fast, hard-hitting and un-compromising. “With my character and John, the dynamic has changed yet again. It’s more of a peer-to-peer rela-tionship than it has been in the past. Although Ben will still mess up and John will criticize him brutally for it, he’s got a little more freedom to do a little more of his own work. The end of the season will mark the end of his probationary period.” ***

Q: Is Jillian Michaels really leaving “The

Biggest Loser”? She’s so much a part of this show that I can’t imagine it going on without her! -- Tawny D., via e-mail

A: Well, start imagining it, because Jillian is outta there. After this season, which begins Jan. 4, her contract is up, and she is leaving the show. Jil-lian explained her decision: “I want to take a year off TV and focus on becoming a mommy and doing more charity work. Shooting ‘Losing It’ also had a big impact on me. Living with kids, I saw firsthand what I was missing. I have to get my priorities in the right order.” ***

Q: How is Vanessa Williams fitting in as the newest cast member of “Desperate House- wives”? -- Sandi S., Lousiville, Ky.

A: Vanessa is doing great, at least according to co-star Joshua Moore, who plays Parker Scavo. When we spoke about the show’s return from winter break on Jan. 2, he told me: “She’s just great to work with. I think she’s a really good actress and she’s great in her role. She’s just a very cool person to talk to and hang out with. She definitely has to flip that switch on to be mean (like her character, Renee).”

19 New Year’s Resolutions It Will Pay You To Keep Have you given up making New Year’s resolu-tions because it’s just plain dumb to make prom-ises you’re not likely to keep? Before you throw out the baby with the bath water, why not shift your thinking to resolutions that you can keep -- and save some serious cash in the process? 1) Review all of your insurance coverage. Raise deductibles to the highest level feasible. Drop collision coverage on cars with a market value of less than $2,500. Carry life insurance equal to five times the insured’s annual salary. A housewife should be insured based on no less than $50,000 per year.

2) Create a list with current data regarding all loans, insurance policies, important documents, savings and investments. Include information on where all of these documents are kept.

3) Inventory your safe-deposit box. Do not keep the only copy of your will or family trust in a safe-deposit box. Often such a location is sealed upon a death and your survivors will be unable to access them.

4) Calculate (do not just estimate) your net worth. 5) Change batteries in smoke detectors, and make a video inventory of all personal possessions. Store this at another location. A room-by-room video can prove invaluable in making an insurance claim should your home and property be destroyed by flood or fire.

6) Total up all the bank fees you’ve paid in the past year. Reconsider your banking relationship. Join a credit union that offers a free checking ac-count.

7) Open a special savings account, and make monthly deposits to cover your quarterly and an-nual bills (property taxes, insurance, auto mainte-nance and registration, etc.).

8) Ask your mortgage holder about canceling your private mortgage insurance. You may not even be aware that you are paying for this as part of your monthly payments. In most cases, PMI cannot be required once the borrower has accumulated 20 percent equity. This could reduce your monthly mortgage payment by hundreds of dollars.

9) Cancel extended warranties on household appliances. If this makes you too nervous or inse-

cure, self-insure by depositing the same monthly amounts that you’ve been paying for these over-priced insurance policies into your own savings account.

10) If you’ll be getting a big tax return for 2010, file a new W-4 form with your employer to adjust the amount withheld for taxes. Why let the govern-ment use your money all year interest-free?

11) Keep a spending record. By putting down in black and white exactly where your money goes, you’ll start changing your spending habits automati-cally.

12) Sign up for a payroll savings program. Often employers contribute proportionately. You hardly will miss money you don’t see.

13) Teach your kids how to save 10 percent.

14) Cut your expenses. Reducing everything a little is far less painful than trying to eliminate a category altogether.

15) Don’t invest in anything you don’t under-stand. If you own a mystery investment, either educate yourself or switch.

16) Write down your car’s mileage Jan. 1.

17) Work on your marriage. Divorce is very expensive, and no one can afford it.

18) If you are due an IRS refund, file as soon as possible. If you owe the IRS, hold off paying until the last minute.

19) Set up a meticulous system for keeping receipts and financial records.

Holiday Hounds It’s no iPad, but the idea has been around a lot longer and still makes the short list of the most pop-ular Christmas gift ideas: the puppy. The great thing about the gift of a pup is that it works both ways. After all, there is no better gift for a dog than a loving home. The downside of Christmas pups is that the idea is not always fleshed out. Bringing a dog into the family means big change. And the big changes come instantly. They don’t wait until the chaos of the holi-days dies down. They don’t wait until the weather warms up. If you’ve found yourself the lucky recipient of a holiday hound, congratulations! You’re in the first days of what could be one of the most wonderful re-lationships of your life. As my Christmas gift to you and your dog, I’d like to share a few “secrets” that will get you off to a good start. I recently visited a family that just got a 9-week-old puppy. The two little girls are thrilled; their moth-er, not so much. The pup has gnawed through wires, chewed up furniture and urinated everywhere, and Mom wasn’t handling it well. She found the word “no” pushing its way through her lips constantly, and to no avail. The problem wasn’t with the dog; it was with the owners. There were a few key things they simply did not know. First, they didn’t know their puppy’s personal-ity. This is important information as it is the very foundation of your relationship. Your dog’s personal-ity determines how you handle him, how you talk to him, how you train him, how you correct him, as well as what not to do. Turns out, this family’s new pup is shy and scared -- and all that yelling was only making it worse. Next, they didn’t realize their puppy was teething. Just like children, all puppies go through a teething stage that can be quite uncomfortable, even painful. Chewing relieves the discomfort. Now that Mom has a better understanding of the chewing behavior, she can help. Cheap and easy puppy teething tool: Soak some washcloths in water, roll them up and put them in the freezer. Keep a stockpile on hand to offer your pup whenever he needs a good chew. Don’t worry, you’ll know when that is. Finally, Mom didn’t want to crate her pup-py because she thought it was mean. Done right,

Many Americans Need Incentives for Health Until now, most health care experts believed that adults who were slightly above their ideal body weight lived the longest. A few extra pounds seemed to confer a longevity advantage, which was a great relief to almost every pudgy patient I saw. Unfortunately, new research published in The New England Journal of Medicine has shaken up the conventional wisdom, showing that even being moderately overweight can have deadly effects on your health. Researchers examined the effect of body mass index (BMI) on mortality in 1.46 million white adults. The BMI scale is calculated by dividing weight by height squared. A BMI between 25 and 30 is con-sidered overweight, a BMI over 30 is obese, and the ideal weight is defined as a BMI between 20 and 24.9. This enormous study clearly shows that those at their ideal weight live the longest. No matter one’s age, as the BMI increases, there is an insidi-ous increase in risk of death. The risk of death grad-ually increased by 13 percent for overweight adults, becoming very high in those who were either very obese or significantly underweight. In the popula-tion between the ages of 70 and 84, there were 0.7 excess deaths per 1,000 population for those with a BMI of 25-27.4 and 2.5 excess deaths per 1,000 for those with a BMI between 27.5 and 29.9. This information does not bode well for the future health of America, particularly as recent information suggests that approximately 50 per-cent of Americans will have either pre-diabetes or diabetes by the year 2020. The march toward more overweight Americans does not seem to be letting up, and as the 72 million overweight baby boomers reach old age, the impact on our health care system will become a national crisis. Millions of overweight Americans will die too early -- many from prevent-able conditions. The fight to combat excess bulge has spread to virtually every area of American society. Even the Army is making an aggressive attempt to improve the dietary habits of new recruits. At Fort Meade, Md., major changes are noted in the mess hall. While sugary cereals and biscuits are still offered, there are color-coded signs to assist soldiers in choosing foods that are rich in protein, fruits and vegetables.

Simultaneously, staff sergeants are conduct-ing one-hour sessions on healthy eating. They also stand in the mess hall and bark orders to recruits to eat better and assure proper fluids to prevent dehydration. In addition, exercise programs have been updated to improve strength and flexibility and reduce injury risk. Not surprisingly, this ap-proach has led to a more physically fit and a more cognitively astute recruit. In many ways, the problems with our expand-ing waists is similar to the dilemma Americans face with our burgeoning national debt. We keep putting off the inevitable until a crisis forces us to make a change. By waiting until the absolute last minute, change will be much more difficult and painful. The time for delay is over. We need nationwide incentives to encourage grandparents, parents and grandchildren to live better and healthier lives. Despite what you may believe, staying healthy does not have to be difficult. Perhaps, we need staff sergeants in supermarkets and restaurants to assure that we purchase well, eat better and move more. Perhaps, employers should make time during the day to allow their workers to exercise and pro-vide substantive rewards for those who meet easily measured health goals, such as reaching the ideal weight, quitting smoking or maintaining a normal blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Clearly, any changes in lifestyle must be complemented with a renewed commitment for quality, preventive health care and proactive health education. Primary-care physicians must be com-pensated for keeping patients healthy -- not just for treating disease. So as the new year approaches, let’s all com-mit to a healthier life that includes eating right, exercising, staying happy and having regular medical checkups. The writing is on the wall and the time for true change is now. By setting a better example for ourselves, we will assure better health for generations to come.

though, a crate is exactly the opposite. Your dog’s crate should be a safe, warm, comfy retreat, a place all his own. It isn’t a punishment and should never be used as such. The perfect crate will give your dog enough room to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It should be of wire construction with good visibility from all angles. Ideally, you’ll line the bottom with a padded fleece bed or soft blankets. And he’ll even find a few of his favorite chew toys waiting for him inside. The perfect placement of the crate is in your bed-room or another open, friendly room in the home where the rest of the family congregates. Neither dog nor crate belongs in a laundry room or a closet. Puppies and dogs, when new to a home, should not have free run of the house. Housebreaking, for one, requires routine and supervision, and it takes time for a new dog to learn the rules of the home. His crate is a safe place for him to rest when you’re sleep-ing or have to be away for a couple of hours. Your Ex Doesn’t Have to be Dead to Get His Social Security Q: In your Social Security guide for wom-en, I think you made a mistake. You said a di-vorced woman can get Social Security from her ex-husband while he is still living. But I was told by friends, who know these things, that the only way a divorcee can get Social Security is when her ex dies. Do you need to make a cor-rection?

A: You need to go back and correct the “friends who know these things.” Tell them that your ex-hus-band does not have to be dead in order for you to get any of his Social Security. And if my e-mail inbox is any indication of the public’s knowledge of this is-sue, then you and your friends are not alone in think-ing incorrectly about a divorced woman’s possible eligibility for Social Security from an ex-husband. Just as some currently married women might be eligible for a wife’s benefit on their alive-and-well husband’s Social Security account, a divorced wom-an also can qualify for similar benefits from the still-breathing ex -- assuming she meets all the eligibility rules. Here are some of those rules: -- A divorced woman must have been married to her ex for at least 10 years. -- She must be currently unmarried (even if she re-married after the divorce, she would still be eligible for benefits if the subsequent marriage has ended). -- She must be at least 62 years old. -- She must not be due higher benefits on her own Social Security record.

There are also a couple rules that apply to the ex-husband. He must be at least 62 years old, meaning he is old enough to qualify for Social Security. But he does not have to be actually getting Social Security benefits. In other words, a divorced wife (unlike a currently married wife) can receive Social Security from her ex, even if he isn’t receiving Social Secu-rity himself. That rule was put in place to prevent a man from not claiming Social Security benefits just to keep his ex-wife from drawing anything on his account. Amazingly, these kinds of shenanigans actually used to happen. (I guess more than a few couples end their marriages very bitterly -- and that bitterness carried over to attempts to get revenge by trying to withhold Social Security benefits.) Another part of the eligibility rules concerning the ex pleasantly surprises many divorced women. And that is the fact that it doesn’t matter if the ex has remarried. A divorced woman claims her ben-efits from the ex-husband independently of any other activity on his account. A guy could potentially have two or three women getting benefits on his Social Security record, and each would qualify for full ben-efits. Payments to each divorced wife do not offset any other payments made on the account. And on a related note, here’s a bit of good news for some of the divorced men out there. Anything paid to your ex-wife (or wives) does not reduce your Social Security benefits in any way. I’ve mentioned before that throughout my 32-year career with the Social Security Administration, I ran into many situa-tions where a man had a clause similar to this insert-ed into his divorce decree: “I don’t want my ex-wife to get a nickel of my Social Security benefits.” That clause isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. One final note: Many women, whose ex is still alive, don’t qualify for Social Security divorced wife’s benefits for the same reason that many currently married women don’t get a regular wife’s benefit from their husband’s account. And that’s because they are often due higher benefits on their own So-cial Security record. Because the benefit rate payable to a wife (or ex-wife) can only be as high as one-half of the husband’s Social Security -- and is frequently as low as one-third (depending on the age at which a woman starts her benefits) -- a woman who has worked any decent amount of time outside the home will generally get a Social Security retirement benefit that exceeds any spousal benefits she is due. In other words, if you’re a working woman, your husband (or ex-husband) usually isn’t worth much

to you -- from a Social Security perspective. That is while he is alive. But once he dies, and much higher widow’s benefits kick in, he finally can mean real bucks to you. * * *

Q: My ex-husband, to whom I was married for about 15 years, has remarried three times since our divorce. And he’s currently living with yet another woman. Because I never remarried, I know I am eligible for some of his Social Secu-rity. But can all these other women get money from him, too?

A: It’s possible but unlikely. If some of those sub-sequent marriages didn’t last 10 years, the ex-wives involved won’t qualify for benefits. Those women who remarried (and are still married) won’t qualify. If any have worked and earned higher benefits on her own record, she won’t qualify. So again, the chances are pretty slim that all of these women will get ben-efits on your ex’s Social Security account. Because of the prevalence of divorces and remar-riages, people always say, “No wonder Social Securi-ty is going broke. They’re paying all those benefits to so many ex-wives.” But as I tried to illustrate above, benefit payments to multiple divorcees are not as common as people think.

Statins Aren’t Only Way to Lower Cholesterol DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My doctor prescribed statin drugs to control my LDL cholesterol. First I took lovastatin (Mevacor) and then sim-vastatin (Zocor), but I had muscle pain and weakness with them. I am reluctant to start the pravastatin (Pravachol) that he now has prescribed. Are there alternatives? How about Endur-acin? CoQ10 has been suggested. -- D.L.

ANSWER: Statins are the most potent cholester-ol-lowering drugs, including lowering LDL choles-terol -- bad cholesterol, the kind that clings to artery walls. They’ve been around for 20 years, and their safety record has been good. Some people develop muscle pain. Those people can try a different statin, as you did. However, you might be reacting a bit too fast in rejecting pravastatin (Pravachol). It is the statin that most infrequently is involved with muscle complaints. I don’t know any herb on the list of herbs you in-cluded (in an edited part of the letter) that compare with medicines for cholesterol control. However, there are things you can do to lower cholesterol, in-cluding reducing your saturated fat and cholesterol intake. Saturated fats are the fats found in many meats, whole-fat dairy products and many other commercially prepared foods. You have to look on the label. Omega-3 fatty acids lower cholesterol. They’re found in fish. If you cannot stand fish, take the omega-3s in pill form. Questran, Colestid, Welchol and Zetia are cho-lesterol-lowering drugs that are unrelated to statins.Niacin can increase HDL cholesterol (good choles-terol) and lower triglycerides, fats that also figure into artery clogging. Endur-acin is a slow-release preparation of niacin. Slow-release preparations were introduced to lessen flushing, one of the side effects of niacin. Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is an antioxidant made by the body and also is available in pill form. Anti-oxidants counter the damaging byproducts coming from cell chemistry. I don’t see any references men-tioning that it lowers cholesterol. The cholesterol booklet gives an in-depth treat-ment of cholesterol. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 201W, Box 536475, Or-lando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am an 80-year-old male. I work out on a Cybex weight ma-chine and also on a treadmill. I was diagnosed as having an umbilical hernia. Please discuss it. Is surgery recommended at my age? Will working out aggravate it? -- C.R.

ANSWER: All hernias are protrusions of inter-nal organs or tissues through a defect in the wall that’s supposed to hold them in place. In your case, the defect is the umbilicus -- the navel, the bellybut-ton. With age, the scar that closes the umbilicus (the site where the umbilical cord from the placenta at-

taches to the fetus) weakens, and a hernia can form.If the hernia isn’t large, isn’t bothering you and doesn’t put a crimp in your lifestyle, nothing has to be done. When you work out, does the hernia bulge larger? If it does, you should limit the amount of weight you lift. If it doesn’t, then you can continue as you are, so long as your doctor concurs. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Exercise Videos I’ll have to admit, she looks good for 73. I’m talking about Jane Fonda. She has two new exer-cise videos out, and they’re aimed at seniors. The first one is “Jane Fonda’s Prime Time: Fit and Strong.” It has two different workouts, both 25 minutes long. The exercises are low impact, are done standing up and seem very simple to do. The second video, “Jane Fonda’s Prime Time: Walkout,” also has two levels. Both programs have you walking a mile, right in the comfort of your home. Fonda has done her homework, I’ll give her that. She knows certain facts: Exercise cuts the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and frac-tures. And she’s right when she says that exercise can change our lives. Still, don’t buy sight unseen. Get to a computer and check out the two videos on her website (www.janefonda.com) and click on Fitness. And guys: From what I’ve seen of the videos, they would be good for you, too. If you don’t happen to like Fonda, you still can benefit from exercise videos you use at home. Whether it’s because there’s no senior workout class near you, or because the weather is too atro-cious, it’s really not necessary to go out to get the exercise you need. Look for a video called “Exercise: A Video From the National Institute on Aging.” All the exercises are done seated or standing, and use little hand weights. Also look for another video titled “Older and Much Wiser Workout.” It’s low impact for begin-ners, and it’s broken into sections so you can vary your workout. Promising ourselves that we’ll exercise -- per-haps we should consider this our New Year’s resolution?

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Caregiver Needs Q: My aging parents continue to share a lov-ing, happy 64-year marriage, but now there is a lot of stress. Seven months ago, dad had ma-jor surgery, which has affected his attitude and personality. Now, he does not want to be left alone and just refuses when mom asks him to help with something. He just sits, naps, reads and generally pouts a lot. Now in the role as his caretaker, mom has lost most of her freedom and independence. She says she is all right, but we see her energy and health deteriorating and can tell that this new situation is causing her a great deal of stress. What can we do?

A: Often, when an individual believes he or she has lost control and isn’t needed, he or she be-comes fearful and even depressed. Poor health and pain are major factors in a personality change. One defense is for both the primary caretaker and part-ner to clearly understand that their control buttons have been switched. Mom needs to accept her new role as the control-ling partner. She currently needs all the help she can get. Running a household is a major responsibility, and adding caretaker to her duty list can easily make it overwhelming. Caretakers can also start feeling guilty and anxious if they think they aren’t doing an adequate job in their new role. Mom needs a timeout every day, either to be alone or to leave the house and enjoy the company of friends. Possible solutions could be to pay some-one or have a volunteer take dad to your local senior center for an hour or two. Ask one of his pals to take him to breakfast, hire a paid sitter or ask a neighbor to stay with him. Sometimes, a friendly church mem-ber is available. She will proably have to seek help. Support should be made available from your fami-ly. Schedule visits and be prepared to take over while mom takes a breather. For her own well-being, she needs distractions. Although dad may be reluctant, it is your mom’s time to make decisions for him. In their case, it is very important for her to main-tain her health and activity. Otherwise, major chang-es in their lifestyle will have to be made. Your moth-er is a hero, but should her health also deteriorate, major decisions will need to occur. It is time for all of your family to be supportive, and to make sure she knows that she’s not in this all alone.

Q: As a widow, I am concerned about how my grown children view my assets. I foresee problems over who gets what, and it may cause a rift in our family. My husband and I always talked about it but never got around to making a will or trust. Is this what I need to decide who should get what? I don’t know very much about these things.

A: Yes, and you should do this as soon as pos-sible. Many parents would like to believe their chil-dren will peacefully and equitably divide the family treasures. That rarely happens. Although parents try to be fair in giving away as-sets equally, it is difficult to do so. Each family has different circumstances, so act now to avoid a pos-sible future war. By creating a trust, you can legally transfer items exactly as you wish, possibly save taxes and avoid fighting between siblings. As soon as possible, find an estate attorney and appoint an executor to make the distributions. Not wanting to face the reality of their own mortality, ag-ing parents often keep procrastinating and wind up never getting this important step done. If you don’t, the courts will make all of those decision for you. Do not delay this any longer!

■On Jan. 9, 1768, Englishman Philip Ast-ley stages the first modern circus in Lon-don. Astley, a former cavalry sergeant ma-jor, found that if he galloped in a tight circle, centrifugal force allowed him to perform seemingly impossible feats on a horse’s back. He invited the public to see him wave his sword in the air while he rode with one foot on the saddle and one on the horse’s head.

■On Jan. 6, 1838, Samuel Morse’s tele-graph system is demonstrated for the first time at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morris-town, N.J. The telegraph eventually would revolutionize long-distance communica-tion, reaching the height of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s.

■On Jan. 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers started excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages. The Golden Gate Bridge officially opened on May 27, 1937. At 3,000 feet, it was the longest bridge span in the world at the time.

■On Jan. 7, 1927, the Harlem Globetrot-ters basketball team, formerly known as the Savoy Big Five, travels 48 miles west from Chicago to play its first game, in Hinckley, Ill. The Globetrotters won 101 out of 117 games that first season.

■On Jan. 4, 1974, President Richard Nixon refuses to hand over tape recordings and documents that had been subpoe-naed by the Senate Watergate Commit-tee. Marking the beginning of the end of his presidency, Nixon would resign from office in disgrace eight months later.

■On Jan. 3, 1990, Panama’s General Manuel Antonio Noriega, after holing up for 10 days at the Vatican embassy in Panama City, surrenders to U.S. military troops to face charges of drug trafficking. • Why is Utah’s Great Salt Lake salty? It’sbecause it is an endorheic lake, meaning it doesn’t have an outlet. Tributary rivers continually transport small amounts of salt mixed with their fresh water into the Lake. When large quantities of that water evaporate, the salt remains, leaving the Lake far saltierthanevenseawater.Atapproximately75mileslong and 35mileswide, it’s the 37th largestlake on Earth. Mountain man Jim Bridger and French-Canadian fur trader Etienne Provostwere the first Europeans to see the Lake, inseparate sightings in 1824.

• Another endorheic lake is the Salton Sealocated in Southern California’s CoachellaValley. Prepaid Cards: Load at Your Own Risk The government did us a favor when it created the CARD Act, which reined in banks and credit-card companies that had been collecting millions of extra dollars from consumers. Thanks to the Card ACT, we gained 21 days to make a payment, and 45 days notification of serious changes in terms. We also now have the little box on the statements that shows us how long it will take to pay off the debt if we only pay the required minimum, and more. Now a new industry has sprung up, devising new ways to separate us from our hard-earned dollars. Enter the prepaid card, also called the “reloadable” card. Consumers are invited to use the prepaid cards as they would a bank: Deposit a paycheck, have bills automatically paid out of the balance, buy gas, groceries, or whatever. The cards can be pur-chased and reloaded nearly anywhere, including convenience stores and big-box stores. Prepaid cards are becoming big business as more and more people opt out of having regular checking and savings accounts. Some lack good credit; many don’t want to incur credit-card interest; while others simply want the convenience of not carrying cash.

The prepaid cards, however, don’t come with the same protections as credit cards: Those CARD Act laws don’t cover prepaid cards, especially when it comes to fees. If you put, say, $100 on a prepaid card, you’d probably assume that you’d have that whole $100 of your own money to spend, right? Not so fast. Be aware that these prepaid cards can come with all kinds of outrageous hidden of fees tied to them. Welcome to: Purchase fees, activation fees, minimum deposit fees, card-replacement fees, with-drawal fees, ATM inquiry fees, cancellation fees, monthly fees, reload fees, annual fees, PIN fees, even a fee for talking to a customer service repre-sentative should you have any questions about all your fees! Prepaid cards generally put a temporary lock on your funds when used at a gas station or for hotels, denying you access to your own money. Some of the prepaid cards even include a line of credit or overdraft protection. If you don’t keep careful track of all the associated fees milking your account, you can easily wind up spending more than you realize and incur debt. There’s also no credit reporting with prepaid cards, which means they can’t be used to build up a credit history. Instead of paying fees through the nose to use your own money, open a bank account and use the debit card that comes with it.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Fiftieth Birthday Gift is Over 100 Years Old Q: My mother gave the pictured coffee cup and saucer to my grandfather in Germany for his 50th birthday. Inscribed in gold on the cup, it says: “Robert Rabsahl -- 50.” On the saucer, there’s this date: “12 Febr 1909.” Marked on the bottom of the cup are the letters and num-bers: “KPM -- 568.” Can you tell me the value of my cup and saucer? It is not for sale, as my oldest grand-daughter will inherit it.

A: Around the turn of the last century, the mark you provided was used by several porcelain factories in Germany. Krister Porcelain Manufactory in Sile-sia, Germany, and Kranichfeld Porcelain Manufac-tory in Saxony, Germany, both produced this mark. The number “568” is a design number. The value of your commemorative cup and sau-cer would probably be $50 to $75.

Q: I am interested in learning about the maker and value of my glass vase. Standing 5 inches tall, the cranberry-colored top open-ing is triangular in shape. The lower portion is clear glass. Etched into the bottom are the words: “Afors -- GK 306 -- E. Gordon.” What can you tell me about my vase and its approximate value?

A: You have a nice example of modern Scan-dinavian art glass. Afors Glass Factory is located in Sweden. Ernest Gordon was the designer, and “306” is a model number. Afors is now part of Orrefors Kosta Boda. Your vase was made between 1954 and 1961. It would probably be worth $175 to $275. * * *

Q: I have a coffee and tea set that my fa-ther brought back from Germany in 1948. En-closed is a photo of the mark that is on each piece. The set consists of a coffeepot, a teapot,

a cream pitcher and a sugar bowl. They are all decorated with white flowers and gold leaves against a royal blue background. I have not been able to locate anyone to tell me anything about my set. I would be greatly appreciative if you could give me any informa-tion on its history and value.

A: Heinrich Porzellan made your set. Since 1896, they have produced porcelain in Selb, Bavaria, Ger-many. With a cobalt-blue background, the pattern name is “Christina.” Your coffee/tea set would probably be worth $275 to $325.

Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P.O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be an-swered in this column. Due to the volume of inquiries, she can-not answer individual letters. To find out more about Anne Mc-Collam and read features by other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate website at www.creators.com.

Wide stance for driver The dreaded pop-up is one of the most common misses when hitting with the driver. This is generally the result of the downswing being too steep. To promote a more shallow swing, widen your stance at address when hitting your driver. Your feet should be just wider than your shoulders. If you feel that your shoulder turn is limited or your weight transfer is off, then you have widened your stance too much. You should feel like you are still able to turn freely to your position at the top of the swing. And your swing shouldn’t feel all that different. You will just be entering the hitting area from a more shallow angle, allowing you to “sweep” the ball off the tee instead of chopping at it.
