MONTHLY MESSAGES

Administrators’ Message

This month we celebrate Thanksgiving and we have many things to be thankful for. We are most thankful that you have entrusted us with the task of educating your children – they make us so proud every single day. We had a very smooth start to the school year. Our Meet the Staff Evening was a success, and we were pleased to be able to meet so many of you for the first time!

School Opening Celebrations

Our School Opening Celebrations were moving celebrations of prayer and song. We were so happy to have Bishop David attend and bless our students! A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Greschuk Chapter, for providing the colour guard for Bishop David and for celebrating with us. They are wonderful examples of faith and service.

Parent Volunteers

We are very thankful for our many parent volunteers. You make such a difference in our school! Thank you to those parents who have been volunteering in our classrooms. We are so grateful for all you do! Thank you as well to all parents who sit on our School Council and on our Fundraising Association. It is wonderful to see so many parents who are committed to our school and wish to have a voice in the direction the school is going and in the decisions that affect their children’s education. Thank you for your enthusiasm and your desire to help us to make our school even greater than it already is.

Marafun Volunteers

We would like to especially thank the many parents and staff who helped make our second annual BDM Marafun a huge success! Thank you as well to everyone who made an online donation or brought bottles in support of the ECS Foundation’s Dreams for Kids campaign – through your generosity, we were able to raise a total of $1046 for Dreams for Kids! A special thank you to Mrs. Durie for coordinating the entire event, Mr. Durie for helping with set up and Freezie distribution and our grade nine leadership team for helping wherever they were needed. An extra special thank you goes out to all those who donated time and also sponsored our event: Mrs. Davene Bailey, from Dream Events by Davene, who provided our spectacular balloon arch (we are still enjoying it in our foyer), Lana LaPorte and her team from the Callingwood M&M Meat Shop who looked after barbecuing 1000 hotdogs, Save On Foods for providing 1000 water bottles for all of the runners and McDonald’s for providing juice. It was an amazing day of fitness and fun!

School Staff

We are very thankful for our school staff. October 2 is Custodian Appreciation Day and October 5 is World Teachers’ Day, both are great opportunities to thank our staff for all that they do to make our school a wonderful place to learn in.

IB Candidacy

And finally, we are very thankful to be a candidate school* for both the Primary and Middle Years International Baccalaureate Programmes. Being part of the IB community provides us with a blueprint for offering a top-notch education for our students. IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, please visit http://www.ibo.org.

Happy Thanksgiving

On behalf of the staff, we would like to wish each of our students and their families a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

Superintendent’s Message

Superintendent Joan Carr’s message is also available online: Superintendent’s Message for October

“I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” (John 17:26)

This scripture passage comes from a time that is very close to Jesus’ death. He is praying to God for his disciples. It paints a beautiful picture of divine love. Jesus ensured that we knew that he loved us and named God as the source of that love. His goal is that we always know the deep and enduring nature of the glorious love of the Father and the Son for all people.

There is a very famous phrase from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: “that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” On September 1, the new Education Act reformatted the names of school jurisdictions in Alberta. Our legal name is now Edmonton Catholic Separate School Division, but we will continue to also use our familiar names of Edmonton Catholic Schools and ECSD. You can rest assured that our commitment to excellent Catholic education

Page 3: VOL. 3, ISSUE 2 OCTOBER 2019€¦ · WE Day Halloween Activities Good Shepherd Market. MONTHLY MESSAGES Administrators’ Message This month we celebrate Thanksgiving and we have

remains as our foundation.

Our promise to provide innovative ways to meet the needs of students is creating exciting new opportunities. We are pleased to announce that we opened up a Millwoods Campus at 7319-29 Avenue for our Cardinal Collins High School Academic Centre. This classroom-based learning model is designed for students who are in their fourth and fifth year of high school and require an alternative way of finishing high school or need to upgrade Grade 12 diploma courses. The end result of this model is that our Division has outstanding high school completion rates, excellent transition rates, and a very low drop out rate. We are so pleased to be able to now offer this educational option in the south side of the city.

We have some upcoming opportunities for parents and guardians to engage in various aspects of our faith and faith formation. Edmonton Catholic Schools is proud to be sponsoring an evening with the highly engaging Father Richard Leonard as part of Newman Theological College’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The session is on Tuesday, October 29 from 7-9 pm at the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, 8421 – 101 Avenue. Visit www.newman.edu/FrLeonard to register for this free public lecture.

ECSD will be offering 2 identical sessions, one at Corpus Christi Parish (Nov. 6) and one at St. Charles Parish (Nov. 7) from 6:30 – 8 pm, that will provide parents and guardians with the opportunity to celebrate Mass with Archbishop Smith and then learn more about the religious education programs of study across the grades. Please visit http://bit.ly/religiouseducation by Wednesday, October 30 to find out more and to register.

Pope Francis shared a tweet on August 27 that is a lovely reflection of our yearly theme and the learning that takes place in our Edmonton Catholic Schools. He shared, “The light of God enlightens those who welcome it.” Our work with the over 44,300 students who join us each day is to help them to welcome that light into their hearts and minds!

Have a blessed Thanksgiving and month of October!

Sincerely,

Joan Carr [MENU]

Fr. Julian’s Message

THANKSGIVING - EUCHARIST - WHOM DO WE MEET IN CHRIST?

The second Monday in the month of October, every year, we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. It is a chance for people to give thanks for a good harvest and blessings in the past year. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, let us not forget God. Let us pause this Thanksgiving weekend and take time to pray, reflect on our lives, and give thanks. Each Catholic Christian should make a real effort to attend Mass and come to the Banquet of our Lord to lift up our hearts in Thanksgiving and to receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. Yes, we give thanks for the gifts of faith, Church, Sacraments and the Catholic Education in our province. We give thanks for the loved ones who are entrusted to our care and those who care for us. We give thanks for our country which has provided such great opportunities, security, and peace. In all, we give thanks and rejoice in the Lord who has blessed each of us with so much and in so many ways.

The word "Eucharist" comes from the Greek language and it means thanksgiving. The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers a brief definition of the word. The inexhaustible richness of the sacrament of the Eucharist, i.e. the “Mass” is expressed in the different names we give it. Each name evokes certain aspects of it. It is called: Eucharist, because it is an action of thanksgiving to God. The Greek words eucharistein and eulogein recall the Jewish blessings that proclaim — especially during a meal — God’s works: creation, redemption, and sanctification (CCC 1328). As we come to the Eucharistic Banquet this Thanksgiving weekend let us pause and reflect on Whom do we meet in Christ?

In Christ we meet God. We meet also our true selves as God wants us to be. "Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect," said Jesus (Mt. 5:48). The most important decision one has to make in life is the decision for or against Jesus Christ. Say "yes" to Jesus as Lord and you gain light, life, forgiveness, joy and eternity. Say "no" to Jesus and you throw all these away. Father Raymond L. Bruckberger, a French Dominican priest, pictures God the Father saying of Jesus: "Since I have told you everything in My Word, Who is My Son, I have no other words that can at present say anything or reveal anything to you beyond this. Fix your eyes on him alone, for in him I have told you all, revealed all, and in him you will find more even than you desire or ask. ... If you fix your eyes on him, you will find everything, for he is My whole word and my reply, he is My whole vision and My whole revelation." ... "From the day when I descended upon him with My Spirit on Mount Tabor saying, This is my beloved Son; listen to him! (Mk. 9:7) I have put aside the old forms of teaching and response and I have given all to him: listen to him, because I have no further faith to reveal ... If I spoke, it was in order to promise the Christ ... in whom all good was to be found."

Who is this Jesus? He is indeed "the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, Light of Light, true God of true God ... Through Him all things were made." (Nicene Creed)

The need of the world is Jesus. The hunger of the world is Jesus. The hope of the world is Jesus.

The healing of the world is Jesus. The light of the world is Jesus.

STAY Message

Can you believe a month has gone by since our kids have returned from summer break? Every year we watch in amazement as parents’ race to school to drop off their children. Stop signs get ignored, parking in crosswalks and on the wrong side of the road is common practice. All these infractions warrant a ticket and maybe even a tow truck. Yet, time after time parents justify these unsafe practices.

Children watch and learn from their parents. Our students will someday take their driving tests and if they follow these examples, they will fail their tests. Stop signs are always stop signs even in school yards. Parking in a crosswalk is always unlawful even if there is no sign. Parking with the driver’s wheels to the curb is always improper parallel parking.

Our students are precious gifts. We need to take great care in delivering them to school and picking them up after school. The extra few seconds it takes to do the right thing pays great dividends. Please leave on time for school, stop at those stop signs, and park legally. We just want to keep everyone safe.

Over the past month, STAY Advisors have been busy building relationships with new students, new staff and reacquainting ourselves with those students and staff from the previous years. Our goal is to build healthy relationships with as many youths as we can. Our message for the month of September to the students was that of respecting what the Responsible Use Agreement sets out. We want to make sure that everyone abides by the conditions set out in this document .https://www.ecsd.net/ParentsStudents/ParentResources/Documents/responsible_use_agreement.pdf'

We are blessed to have Wi-Fi in all our schools, allowing students access to the internet. They can use their personal devices to access the internet through WI-FI and they can use their own 3G networks. We are encouraging our students to use these networks responsibly to avoid potential issues that might affect the use of the networks.

We would ask that, as parents, you encourage your children to use technology wisely and appropriately. Our online reputations are important and they can greatly impact our future. Please continue to educate yourself in the ever-changing world of Social Media, both its perks and its pitfalls. The internet is a great place to research this information. If any parent would like to speak to a STAY member, please contact your school directly and they will help you with this. See the link for a great resource: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/

Have a great month!

School Team Advisors for Youth (STAY)

Junior high schools in the Edmonton Catholic School District each have ‘School Team Advisors for Youth’ (STAY) which are comprised of retired Police Officers.

The STAY role involves:

• Educating, mentoring, and empowering students. • Educating and mentoring parents on the realities their children face each day by raising parent awareness on these

issues. • Educating and mentoring staff on the realities that students face each day. Working in partnership with the

administration of the school to develop action plans for safety and health of all students.

Message from St. John the Evangelist Parish

Baptism Preparation for Older Children and Adults

Is your child asking to be baptized? Are you seeking a closer relationship with Jesus through Baptism, or want to be Catholic? We can help you or your child prepare for this beautiful sacrament! Please contact the Parish and ask about Baptism (or becoming Catholic) for yourself, or your child or children.

Reconciliation (Confession), Eucharist (Communion) and/or Confirmation Preparation for High School Youth and Adults

Many young people and adults have not completed their initiation into the Church through the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation. Christian initiation begins with Baptism and is sealed with Confirmation. The Eucharist renews both of these sacraments weekly. God calls each of us to a life-long faith journey, and the Church’s sacraments supply us with all of the necessary spiritual resources. St. John the Evangelist Parish invites you and your older child to contact the Parish to prepare for these sacraments with other youth or adults.

School Opening Celebrations

Whether Fr. Dean went to your child’s school for Mass or the School came to celebrate at our Church, all our six schools had a holy start to their year. The students as always were happy, respectful and reverent. They participated by being Readers, carrying the Offertory Gifts, as Altar Servers or in the Entrance Procession, and participating in the Mass responses and singing. Parents, you should be very proud of your children! To all those family members who attended, thank you for representing all those who could not be there.

Mass Times

We welcome you and your family to Mass at St. John on Saturday evenings at 7, and Sunday mornings at 9, 10:30 and noon. If you are in need of a little quiet time with God yourself, come to morning Mass Tuesday through Friday, 8:30 – 9, a half hour that gets your day started the right way. Catholic Education Sunday

Catholic Education Sunday will be celebrated on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3, at St. John the Evangelist Church. We invite you to join us in recognizing the gift of publicly funded Catholic education. All staff of Catholic schools present will be acknowledged by Fr. Dean. Our Parish is collecting new school supplies to make sure all children have the joy of holding a new pencil, writing in a new scribbler, and colouring with new crayons this year. Your donations of school supplies at these Masses will be greatly appreciated.

Pancake Breakfasts

We start our monthly Pancake Breakfasts again on October 27 and November 24, after the 9 am and 10:30 am Masses. This is a CWL-Knights initiative. Your donations contribute to the charities supported by these Catholic organizations and are much appreciated. Give the happy memories of social time with friends and family at Church by continuing this tradition with your own family. p.s., if your young people (gr 6 and up) are looking for service hours or just want to help, we would appreciate their assistance in setting up, serving and take-down. COMMUNICATION

PowerSchool/Swift K12

Parents at Bishop David Motiuk are encouraged to use PowerSchool to monitor their child(ren)’s progress at school. PowerSchool allows parents and students to access attendance, student information and to view their child’s grades or achievement as they exist in the teacher’s gradebook at any given time. PowerSchool also allows parents to register to receive alert notifications, review daily comments from teachers and much more. For elementary parents, PowerSchool allows them to sign up for alert notifications and attendance information.

PowerSchool is also the vehicle used for payment of school fees, field trips and some other charges.

In order to access the report card, parents will need to have their own unique PowerSchool account. (This is a different account than the one used by students.) If you require a username and first-time access code for PowerSchool, or if you have forgotten your PowerSchool log-in information, please call or email Mrs. te Velde. She will be very happy to assist you. It is very important that parents who have not yet done so, create their PowerSchool account as soon as possible.

Note: PARENTS MUST HAVE A POWERSCHOOL ACCOUNT TO ACCESS STUDENT REPORT CARDS AND PAY SCHOOL FEES.

School Emergencies

In the Edmonton Catholic School District, the safety of our students is always our first priority and students are well supervised when they are on school property. When situations occur that warrant emergency procedures to ensure the safety of all students, we will provide parents with accurate and up to date information. One way to keep parents informed about an emergency and the safety procedures that have been put into place is by posting the information on the school website. Information will be posted and updated as required when a school is experiencing an emergency.

If there is an emergency situation at the school where your child(ren) attend, check the school website to stay informed and receive timely information. We also need to keep phone lines available at the school during an emergency, so we ask that you do not call the school. This will enable staff at the school to keep in touch with emergency providers and District personnel.

Thank you for your support and help in ensuring our students remain safe.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

Student Pick Ups and Drop Offs

Traffic in and around the school building is very congested first thing in the morning and again after school. Many parents choose to drive their children to school. If you choose to drive your child to school, please be prepared to wait patiently for up to 20 minutes as traffic moves through the area. These estimated wait times double in inclement weather such as heavy rain and snow. If your child is eligible for bussing, please consider having him or her take the bus to school. It would be far easier to meet your child at the bus stop than to navigate traffic in and around the school each day.

The area between the wrought iron fences is set aside for student drop-offs. This area, the Hug and Go Zone, is an emergency access lane. THERE IS NO PARKING IN THIS AREA. Parents who choose to park or leave their vehicles in this area may be tagged or towed by bylaw enforcement. Please choose safety over convenience so that our students can get to school safely. Parents who are dropping off students are asked to pull to the front of the lane, then “stop, drop and go” in order to keep traffic moving. Traffic in the Hug and Go Zone is one-way, with vehicles entering at the north entrance and exiting at the south entrance.

Parents who wish to watch their children enter the school are asked to park in a visitor stall (located along the east fence in the parking area directly in front of the school) or on the street (in appropriate areas) and to walk and wait with their children. The staff parking lot is full. We do not have enough stalls to accommodate all of our staff members. Please DO NOT enter the staff parking lot. It is NOT a parking area for parents or an additional drop off zone for students.

Yellow school busses drop students off directly in front of the school. Staff may use the bus lane as a through-way in order to access the staff parking lot. Parents MAY NOT enter the bus lanes. Whenever possible, parents are asked to turn right when exiting the parking lot in order to keep traffic moving smoothly in the neighbourhood.

All entry doors to the school are locked at 8:50 AM. Students arriving after 8:50 are asked to go to the front door of the school and ring the buzzer for entry. Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us to keep our students safe.

[MENU]

Safety Patrols

Our patrollers use the point, pause, and proceed technique. This technique models what every pedestrian should do when crossing the street and is a much simpler procedure for school patrollers.

The primary role of AMA School Safety Patrollers is to assist younger students to cross the street — not to direct traffic. Patrollers will now extend their arm to indicate pedestrians want to cross the street and will only extend their stop sign when it is safe to cross their fellow classmates. It would be greatly appreciated if parents could assist our patrollers by exercising extreme caution when approaching the intersections in front of the school.

Thank you for your cooperation. Let’s make this a safe and successful year for our children!

Slow Down for School Zones

At Edmonton Catholic Schools, the health and safety of students is always our first priority! School zones are in effect around elementary and junior high schools throughout Edmonton. Motorists are required by law to slow down to 30 km/h between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm on school days where school zone signs are posted. Please slow down and ensure the safety of students near our schools.

WE Care Challenge

Throughout the months of October and November, students from Bishop David Motiuk and other schools throughout the Edmonton Catholic School district, will be involved in the WE Care Challenge the Edmonton Catholic Schools Foundation’s Dreams for Kids and the Sign of Hope campaign. The Edmonton Catholic Schools Foundation is a charitable group that supports various projects and initiatives for students and families attending Edmonton Catholic Schools, such as summer camp opportunities for needy children, school lunch subsidies, emergency family support, support for students dealing with mental health issues, and special projects.

The funds raised by the Sign of Hope campaign give Catholic Social Services the support it needs to create and deliver unique programs in the community — programs that help people living with HIV/AIDS, that provide a Safe House for street youth, and that protect seniors who are experiencing abuse or neglect. These, and other programs, rely on Sign of Hope dollars to keep the doors open and the lights on.

Bishop David Motiuk students raised over $2000 for the ECSD Foundation last year and we hope to surpass that total this year.

WE Day

Bishop David Motiuk School students and staff are embracing a global event called We Day Alberta which will be held at Rogers’ Place on Tuesday, October 22. We Day is much more than a one-day event; it is an investment that launches a year of action for social change. The immediate impact is the millions of dollars raised for local and international charities, and millions of hours volunteered by young people all over Canada and in countries around the world. 18 of our junior high students along with Mr. Campbell, will be attending We Day. They are very excited about the opportunity to hear about the amazing world-changing actions that are possible and to act as change agents in the Bishop David Motiuk community. Students and staff not attending will also be able to participate in We Day by viewing portions of We Day as it is live-streamed and participate in social justice projects throughout the year.

If you would like to find out more about the We Day movement, go online to http://www.weday.com/, an online hub dedicated to educating, engaging and empowering a generation of socially-conscious youth.
