September is Hunger Action Month
Feeding America kicked off the month of September with a nation-wide campaign to raise awareness regarding hunger in our nation. Partnering with the nationwide network of food banks, Feeding America is urging individuals to do the same, through a variety of activities:
1. Hunger Action Day on September 4th, 2014. The month long effort to raise awareness in support of hunger-relief started with a campaign to turn the nation orange hence the orange theme of this month’s newsletter. You can still join! Visit the Feeding America website to learn how to show your support by turning your Facebook and Twitter profile orange!
2. Take the Pledge: Visit the Feeding America website and urge Congress to strengthen child nutrition programs, like the Care-Net BackPack Program!
3. Volunteer! Find your local food bank or pantry and volunteer during September and all year long! For more information on volunteering at CareNet, email: [email protected]

Eat Mor BBQ... CareNet was honored to be the recipient of well over 300lbs. of cooked pork butt,
compliments of the 6th Annual Mountain High BBQ Festival! The donation was a
joint effort between The Franklin Chamber of Commerce and the Kansas City Bar-
becue Society (KCBS). The KCBS started a campaign called 100KCBS Meals
Mission, with an initiative to feed 100,000 people this year alone!
BBQ For All In all, 53 teams who participated in this year’s BBQ Festival all obliged to cooking
an extra Boston Butt to donate to the CareNet Soup Café, on top of preparing their
entries for competition. “We appreciate greatly what the BBQ teams did in prepar-
ing and bringing a wonderful new food item to the people who come in and utilize
CareNet’s services” said Scott Moritz, CareNet Operations Director. Moritz went
on to add, “BBQ is not something that we can readily prepare here in our kitchen
and the amount of time that goes into its cooking is so lengthy, that it’s not condu-
cive to the services we provide. Thanks to the donation, we’ve been able to add a
tasty treat to our menu for our hot meals.”
To date, the donation has helped serve approximately 300 meals and is projected
to help serve somewhere in the area of 600 meals from this very generous dona-
tion! Charitable Giving Breakdown
