Nation- A large group of people the usually share a culture

and history and have a government of some sort.

• Gary was ashamed of his cannibalistic nation.

Page 17: Vocab 1 and 4

Nation-State

- A specific state (province, territory etc…) that is made of only one nation.

• Gary moved from his cannibalistic nation to a smaller, more peaceful neighboring nation-state. (not Quebec)

Page 18: Vocab 1 and 4

Identity

• Who you are, as an individual• Gary looked at his identity, was not content and

decided to change it.

Page 19: Vocab 1 and 4

Patriotic

• Being nationally loyal.• Gary was feeling particularlypatriotic about his new home.

That’s not Gary.

Page 20: Vocab 1 and 4

Non-nationalist

• Someone who feels no loyalty to their country• Gary could not understand the non-nationalists of his

nation-state, it was just so great.

Page 21: Vocab 1 and 4

National Interest

• To the advantage of one’s country.• Gary looked at every event to see if it had weight in

his nation-state’s national interest.

Page 22: Vocab 1 and 4

Foreign policy

• The policy of a nation when dealing with other nations.

• Gary wrote his nation-state’s foreign policy because they didn’t have one and he thought it would be important.

Page 23: Vocab 1 and 4

Quebecois

• The term for someone who is part of in Quebec.• Gary did not like the Quebecois, they spoke French

and French confused him.

Page 24: Vocab 1 and 4

Conscription• The act of making someone join the army.• Gary thought conscription was a weird idea for the

defense of his nation-state. Oh, and by the way, the name of his nation-state is now Goborinthia.

Page 25: Vocab 1 and 4

Self Determination• The trait of being able to make your own decisions

and act on them without the influence of others.• Gary had tons of self determination, that’s how he

became head of military defense for Goborinthia.

Page 26: Vocab 1 and 4

Successor state

• A state created when an old state was divided up.• Gary discovered Goborinthia was originally a

successor state after the Bikilafrita war.

Page 27: Vocab 1 and 4

Sovereignty

• A ruler with complete authority.• Gary was severely against Sovereignty because of his

terrible memories of King Quantaluwazaza(who was evil) of his old nation.

Page 28: Vocab 1 and 4

Self Government• A democracy, control of the government by the

people.• Gary liked the idea of self government because more

people would be happy if they had a say in politics.

Page 29: Vocab 1 and 4

Institutions

• An establishment dedicated to a certain cause.• Gary thought people from institutions were very

narrow minded.

Page 30: Vocab 1 and 4

Human rights

• Basic rights that need to be respected by other people if there is to be peace.

• Gary read the human rights and make the council of Goborinthia teach them to every citizen.

Page 31: Vocab 1 and 4

International law and agreements• Rules outside of a nation, of the world.• Gary wrote an international law and agreement that

would severely discourage cannibalism.

Page 32: Vocab 1 and 4

Land claims

• The declaration of control over a certain piece of land or water.

• Gary thought his government should give up some of their land claims to the people to gain trust.

Page 33: Vocab 1 and 4

First Nations treaties and the Indian Act

• Rules that separated the settlers and first nations (gave them reserves etc…).

• Gary heard about the first nations treaties and the Indian act up in Canada and he thought it was racist.

Page 34: Vocab 1 and 4

Peace making

• The process of bringing and introducing peace.• Gary decided to go into the business of peace making

because he thought it was more productive than militarism.

Page 35: Vocab 1 and 4

Peacekeeping

• The job of steadying and holding peace after bringing it.

• Gary went into the business of peacekeeping after he had brought peace to his old nation.

Page 36: Vocab 1 and 4

• Gary ended up:– becoming head peacemaker/keeper

on behalf of his nation-state Goborinthia, created a charter of equality for all, converted everyone in his previously cannibalistic nation to become vegetarian, tamed all the wild beasts with his amazing animal speaking powers and saving the world by inventing world peace.

… and that concludes the story of Gary.
