For the first time ever in Europe and as a "unicum" in the international design world, a lamp becomes a "form trademark". It is the Tolomeo, the world-renowned made-in-Italy icon designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina in 1986.

The UAMI (the European Union's office in charge of trademark, design, and model registration for the 27 EU countries) recently accepted the application of Artemide for registration of Tolomeo as a form trademark (three-dimensional trademark), which means that the form of this lamp, now a global icon, is a registered trademark, and that such trademark can be enforced solely by Artemide. The registration of Tolomeo is

unprecedented for lighting equipment in the European Union.

The unique line of Tolomeo and its gaudy and elegant slenderness are consolidated features of modern aesthetic consciousness: the presence of Tolomeo is now a sign of quality and modernity in the habitat of contemporary man. This identity is worth an actual statement and confirms the well-established ability of Artemide to create experiences that bring innovation into the world of design and projects.

Artemide has the first "form trademark" of light.

Stuttgart. The time: seven minutes, 18 seconds on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The power: 620 hp. The weight: 1,370 kilograms or 3,021 lb in road trim with all fluids on board. The car: the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The GT2 RS is making its world debut at the Moscow Auto Show on August 25th

The future top GT model marking the absolute climax in the 911 range is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche

AG, Stuttgart. With power up by 90 hp and weight down by 70 kilograms or 154 lb in comparison with the 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.21 kilos or 4.9 lb per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class. Obviously, these are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility, truly blistering performance on the road, and of course exemplary Porsche Intelligent Performance. For despite this extra power and performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

versus the 911 GT2 are down by approximately 5 per cent to 11.9 ltr/100 km (equal to 23.7 mpg imp) and 284 g/km.

The 3.6 litre six-cylinder boxer engine boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry exclusive to Porsche in its combination with a gasoline engine drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Developed especially for the 911 GT2 RS, sports tyres measuring 325/30 ZR 19 convert this massive power into equally massive performance and acceleration on the road: 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in just 9.8 seconds, and 0 to 300 km/h in 28.9 seconds. Top speed is 330 km/h.

Equally supreme stopping power on this ultra-high-performance sports car comes from PCCB composite ceramic brakes. Appropriate longitudinal and crosswise dynamics are ensured by the sporting RS set-up of the springs, PASM Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management, anti-roll bars, as well as the dynamic engine mounts and PSM Porsche Stability Management.

In its looks the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the 911 GT2 above all through the lavish use of carbon-fibre-reinforced (CFR) components in matt-black surface finish, even wider wheels and flared wheel arches at the front, new 911 GT2 light-alloy wheels with central locking, as well as ”GT2 RS“ model designations on the doors and rear lid. The upgraded front spoiler lip and the rear spoiler lip made of CFR and now 10 millimetres or almost 0.4 inches higher, again in surface carbon finish, ensure the right aerodynamic precision as well as extra downforce.

The interior also exudes the flair of sporting performance in virtually every detail, featuring lightweight bucket seats made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic in carbon surface finish and lightweight door panels with door opening straps. The basic interior colour is black, contrasting attractively with features such as the seat centre sections and the roof lining as well as segments on the steering wheel rim. The gearshift and handbrake lever are both finished in red alcantara.

Limited to just 500 units, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in Europe from September 2010, in the USA from October 2010. The Euro base price is 199,500.- Euro. Including VAT and national specifications/equipment the new 911 GT2 RS will retail in Germany at a price of 237,578 Euro.

Mallorca

This may not be your idea of a home but it is bold and fun, and it has certainly attracted wide media attention. The 8,500 square-foot Casa Son Vida is a cooperation between three powerhouses: Luxury residential developer

eclectic Dutch designer and founder of Mooi, , and award-winning Los Angeles, Switzerland and Hong Kong-based

Casa Son Vida is located in the Balearic Islands off Spain, on the Island of Mallorca, where humans have lived since 6000–4000 BC and where more recently, tourists have over-crowded every beach. But Casa Son Vida avoids the touristy kitsch and aims much higher. It is in the exclusive Son Vida community, just 15 minutes from the capital of Palma.

Casa Son Vida is in fact a reno of a 1960s Mediterranean villa, but it has been turned into an fantastic, sprawling luxury residence, designed to attract the young, discerning and bold, who are confident and design-savvy enough to know what they are looking at.

Cosmopolitan Estates, Marcel Wanders,tecARCHITECTURE

The handiwork of Marcel Wanders is evident everywhere in the Casa that looks a bit like an unruly movie set with its dino-bone exterior staircase, and various bits and pieces that remind you of Tomorrowland, Mickey Mouse, Finding Nemo and, of course, Alice in Wonderland.

With its retro synthetic vibe, the house clashes happily with its lush surroundings, but the interior, in its white-dominant serenity is much less startling, although fun and unexpected detail is found in every space. There is absolutely nothing ordinary in this house. Everything is customized, every aspect considered a million times. It is a great example or considered chaos

This is the first of six villas planned for the Platinum Estates development by the just less than a year-old Cosmopolitan Estates. The eclectic plans for the remaining villas reveal a series of large residences, radically different from each other. Casa Son Vida is currently not for sale but the other five are. Dream on. BACSAC® was born with the encounter between designer G o d e f r o y d e V i r i e u a n d landscapers Virgile Desurmont and Louis de Fleurieu. Together, they looked for an alternative solution to get round the constraints of the creation of a roof garden in town: difficulties of transportation, excessive weight, but also lack of choice of containers, most of which are often very expensive. How can we reverse the tendency to pay more for the container than the contents? How can we make mobile an instalation which is

often fixed because of its weight and its rigidity? How can we create a planted area at the lowest cost? The idea of planting in bags comes from this desire to change habits and valorize what it should be, the plant. They are launching the manufacture of bags in a permeable geotextile to prevent asphyxiation of the soil. web...

Be aware of these trends...

Long gone are the days when 'online' was synonymous with social isolation and loneliness. In fact, we're now witnessing the exact opposite: technology is driving people to connect and meet up en masse with others, in the 'real world'. It makes for an interesting, easily-digested trend, begging to be turned into new services for your customers.

As predicted by digital gurus more than a decade ago, hundreds of millions of people are now living large parts of their lives online (and lovin’ it!). However, this has not turned entire generations into homebound, anti-social zombies (another popular forecast). Au contraire: social media and mobile communications are fueling a MASS MINGLING that defies every cliché about diminished human interaction in our ‘online era’. So (for now), forget a future in which the majority of consumers lose themselves in virtual worlds, with cities dying and kids never seeing the light of day; expect people to mingle and meet up like there’s no tomorrow. A definition: MASS MINGLING | Thanks to the online revolution, hundreds of millions are now actively searching for, finding, connecting/signaling, and staying in touch with likeminded souls in the virtual world. Constant updates, GPS and mobile online access is now bringing this explosion of dating, networking, socializing and mingling to the real world domain. Here’s what driving this trend, in more detail:

“MASS MINGLING”

1. People love to connectMASS MINGLING follows the pattern of any consumer trend, whereby an existing human need is unlocked in a new way. In this case, interacting with other people - a fundamental need (which goes beyond simply enjoying one another's company, or being emotionally dependent on other people) - has become easier thanks to new technology. So, no surprise here that hundreds of millions of people are now adding and tending to personal profiles (listing likes and dislikes, interests, preferences, physical assets, and opinions), making it easier than ever before to ‘discover', or stay in touch with, likeminded others*. Think friends and family, colleagues, romantic interests, and those sharing similar hobbies, interests, political preferences, grievances or causes. And all this 'befriending' takes place in unprecedented quantities: never before were people able to build and maintain such extensive and relevant personal networks.

Some numbers: * Twitter: 100 million+ users, with 50 million tweets sent each day. * Facebook : nearing 500 million users. The average user has 130 friends, spends 55 minutes a day on the site and receives three "event invitations"

to real-life gatherings every month (in December 2009, the company stated that 3.5 million events were created every month). Next? According to The New York Times, Facebook will soon incorporate 'location' in two ways: its own features for sharing location and APIs to let other sites and apps offer location services to Facebook users. This could well be a MASS MINGLING killer app. * LinkedIn : over 65 million members. A new member joins LinkedIn approximately every second.* A ‘veteran’ MASS MINGLING engine like Meetup has 6.1 million members, handling 2.2 million RSVPs and 180,000 meet-ups, in 45,000 cities a month. * Foursquare has one million users, while Gowalla: 150,000 users. * Nearly three quarters (73%) of online teens and an equal number (72%) of young adults* use social network sites. 73% of adult profile owners use Facebook, 48% have a profile on MySpace and 14% use LinkedIn. (Source: Pew, Feb 2010.)

2. People love “The real world”While the rise of the online world remains one of the premier (consumer) stories of our time, and the , with their decidedly 'offline' overtones, are enormously impactful too. This incredibly powerful tandem of mass urbanization and experiences has resulted in an orgy of real world activities and happenings that are all about mingling; from countless cultural and not so cultural events, concerts, festivals, and seminars, to a burgeoning and truly global bar/dining/party scene, to a Warholian retail renaissance, to tourism & travel now being one of the world's largest industries, employing approximately 220 million people and generating over 9.4 percent of world GDP. In short, people have always, and will for a long time continue to enjoy interacting with other warm bodies.

URBANYEXPERIENCE ECONOMY /LIVING THE LIVE

MASS MINGLING is happening because people can. There's now an all-encompassing information layer* on top of real-world daily life, that (especially when mobile and location-based), turns 'connecting' into 24/7 and 'on the go', further blurring the boundaries between online and offline. This layer has created a space in which following, finding, tracking, connecting to, and ultimately (spontaneously) meeting up in the real world with interesting known and unknown people will be easy, automatic, instinctive, convenient, and even natural. And thus, for many, connecting to 'strangers' is rapidly becoming second nature. For a glimpse of things to come, dive into location-based 'meet-up' services like Foursquare (now doing 700,000 check-ins per day), Gowalla, Google Latitude and Loopt. By the way, the first official Foursquare Day took place this April. News of the event spread by word of mouth, leading many users to organize parties and gatherings celebrating the social network. * Let's not forget that this emerging layer also taps into a vast reservoir of local knowledge and content that has been growing online for years. This incredible info-infrastructure further helps (if not encourages) MASS-MINGLING prone consumers to select venues and activities (based on profiles, preferences, reviews etc.) before venturing out.

40 years

Range RoverThe Land Rover Range Rover will celebrate its 40th birthday on 17 June, 2010. One of the m o s t s i g n i f i c a n t vehicles in the history of motoring, the Range Rover was the world's first vehicle as good on-

road as off-road. It was the first fully capable luxury 4x4 and was a milestone in the development of the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle)."Land Rover has a unique history of product innovation. But the Range Rover probably remains the most historically significant

vehicle we have ever launched. It is one of the most important vehicles in the history of motoring." Phil Popham, Land Rover Managing Director. There have been three generations of Land Rover Range Rover. The original, now known as the Classic, went on sale in 1970 and continued in production, with numerous upgrades and a multiplicity of variants, for just over 25 years. "The Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Black represents the very best Range Rover has to offer and is a fitting tribute to a vehicle which has consistently set the highest standards for all-terrain performance, luxury and design for the last 40 years." Phil Popham, Land Rover Managing DirectorThe ultimate incarnation of the Range Rover, the Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Black 40th Anniversary Limited Edition, is quite simply the last word in bespoke vehicles. With a unique finish in Barolo Black, the exterior also features 20-inch alloy wheels, Diamond Turned, a unique front grille with Titan grille mesh, a bright chrome grille 'U' edge and black grille surround. Side vents have a new mesh set off by bright chrome bars and a black vent surround. There are body coloured door handles and of course, the tailgate badge, 'Autobiography Black'.

Page 21: VivirHome interior design and architecture design magazine

Inside, there's a choice of the standard colourway in Jet, or two colourways unique to the Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Black - Jet and Ivory, or Jet and Pimento. The Autobiography Black logo is discretely repeated throughout the interior where it is embossed on the rear seat armrest and appears on the four unique, Grand Black door veneers. Front door sill tread plates are illuminated with the words 'Range Rover' and there's a half wood Grand Black steering wheel. Petrol models also offer gearknob veneers."At the top of the Range, the new Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Black 40th Anniversary Limited Edition offers customers the option of complete exclusivity with unique colourway combinations as well as striking interior and exterior design features. Around 700 will be made, emphasising the exclusivity of this limited edition." Design Director, Gerry McGovernNo detail has been overlooked in ensuring this is the most special Range Rover in the marque's 40 year history. Even the key fob and driver's handbook carry the Autobiography Black logo.

Crystal Bathtub Takes Pride Of Place At HarrodsHarrods has always been at the forefront of supplying the world with luxurious items, but this crystal bathtub crafted by indulgent Italian company Baldi might just take the title of most extravagant. The unique bathtub will be on display in the main window at Harrods, London for the entire month of July. The huge tub, 2 metres in length and 55cm in height was previously shown in Milan at I Saloni in April 2010 and is carved from a single enormous block of the purest white rock crystal, quarried in the Amazon region of Brazil. The block was discovered in 2006 when Paolo Baldi, father of the company's current CEO Luca Baldi, learned of the existence of this ten-ton block of flawless crystal and had it extracted and transported to Italy intact. If you have £530,000 available than just go to Harrods in Knightsbridge before the end of July.

Modular would not be Modular if it did not combine the introduction of a full range of LEDs with a new and unparalleled development. May we introduce the SPOCK: a design fitting with a flat LED disc, developed with the help of young designers Couvreur & Devos. From this day on ecology, technology and aesthetics go hand in hand. Though the Copenhagen summit failed to deliver the goods, the realisation that we have to take urgent action to save our blue planet was brought home to most of the world’s population. The automotive, energy and raw materials industries have all put green thinking at the top of their agendas. However, an ‘eco-product’ is only of interest to the broad public if the ordinary, ‘polluting’ product is replaced by a device that can rival it in performance. The green car will only make its breakthrough when it is as powerful and durable as the classic internal combustion engine. We hear the same story from a lot of consumers about eco-friendly lights: though they have been on the market for a while, the green alternatives have never matched the colour temperature of traditional halogen or incandescent bulbs. Until now, that is. Modular has applied the very latest technology in an ingenious design. We now introduce you to the Spock: the very first design fitting with a flat LED disc...

Page 25: VivirHome interior design and architecture design magazine

Modular and young designers have created the ‘Spock’

Invisibly ingenious: The LED technology and the design are the result of years of research. With its revolutionary inner works, the LED disc which, thanks to its asymmetrical hinge joint, can be turned horizontally through 359° and vertically through -10/+45°, may turn out to be the first valid substitute for the familiar halogen spotlight. Despite the Spock’s minimal height, all of the fixtures are hidden away invisibly. The thin LED housing, with a cross-section of barely 12.5 mm, contains 16 high-quality LEDs, aligned flat towards the outer edge of the circumference so that they are concealed from the eye. Using a reflector and redirecting plate, the light is diverted and focused via a lens into a powerful beam with a beam angle of 32 or 56 degrees. For the developers it was very important for the light disc to belong to the so-called “Exempt Group”: the highest safety class, which means that the eye (even with lengthy exposure) can never ever be damaged. In other words, the LED disc satisfies the standards in this class in contrast to increasingly inexpensive models in stores that are not so strict with safety instructions and all of the associated consequences. An advantage of the large surface of the disc enables optimum cooling for the LEDs, ensuring a long life of 50,000 hours. The LED engine is fitted with a built-in thermal sensor. When it exceeds a certain temperature under extreme conditions, the Spock is dimmed, so that durability is guaranteed even under exceptional circumstances. The light of thefuture has to make a difference, doesn’t it?

Design, Sleek intelligence: A technical revolution on the inside does not mean sacrificing the beauty of the outside. Quite the reverse. When it comes to design, Modular intends to stay far ahead of its time, now and in the future. Precisely because the LED disc redraws the borders of light, Modular’s R&D department went looking for a fitting that could take the ingenious disc to an even higher level. Along with the young creative duo Couvreur & Devos, the R&D lab came up with a minimalist cast aluminium fitting, finished with a tactile powder coating that accentuates its light technology. This striking but never obtrusive fitting will suit every interior environment, whether on the ceiling, the wall or trackmounted. With its meticulous design, the Spock does not leave a single wire showing: neither on the rotating LED disk incorporated into an attractive, chrome-plated ring hinge, nor at the mains connection at the base of the fitting. The Spock shines through with an ingenious design refined to the last detail. The light of the future has to make a difference, doesn’t it?

Taking minimalism to its apex, Japanese architect Fumihito Hisanari created this plain white box called the Parallel house. This single-family residence in the Kagawa prefecture of Japan is striking in its simplicity. Illumination from skylights and an airy interior make what would seem like a claustrophobic home into one that is surprisingly spacious. The Parallel house is in fact a two-story building. The wooden frame of the Parallel house allows for 1,268 square feet of floor space—far roomier than it appears.
