11. BOTTOM OF THE HILL (Gráda) IMRO

Through my trials and tribulations you’ve been there at my sideAnd my gratitude and love for you I’d never try to hideBut I’ve got one more mountain on my own I have to climbSo won’t you meet me at the bottom of the hill

Through this sea of distractions we navigate the tidesAnd there’s been times of heartbreak and there’s been times of strifeBut most of the time my friend we’ve got on alrightSo won’t you meet me at the bottom of the hill

Halfway up the mountain, in the fog I could not seeI met our holy mother, she said you’d prayed for meShe said close your eyes to darkness and you will see the lightAnd that I’d meet you at the bottom of the hill

I’m halfway down the mountain and I’m naked as a jellybeanBut then there’s probably no part of me you haven’t seen

I better warn you that I might not be that cleanWhen you meet me at the bottom of the hill

Thank you for understanding and thank you for your prayersThey guided me through rocky slopes and pulled me through the worstSee you shortly at the bottom and we’ll go and drink our fill

When you meet me at the bottom of the hill

2. JOHN RILEY (Tim O’Brien) Howdy Skies Music/Forerunner Music Inc. (ASCAP), (Guy Clark) EMI/April (ASCAP)

John Riley came from Galway town in the years of the Irish hungerHe sailed away to Americay when the country was much youngerNow the place was strange and work was scarce and all he knew was farmingSo he followed his other Irish friends to a job in the US army

Refrain: Adventure calls and some men run and this is their sad storySome get drunk on demon rum and some get drunk on glory

Now they marched down Texas way to the banks of the Rio GrandeThey built a fort on the banks above to taunt ol’ Santa AnnaThey were treated bad and paid worse and then the fighting startedAnd the more they fought the less they thought of the damned old US Army

Now when the churchbells rang on Sunday morn they set his soul a shiverThey saw the signoritas wash their hair on the far side of the riverAnd John Riley and two hundred more Irish mercenariesThey cast their lot, right or not, south of the Rio Grande

Now they fought bravely under the flag of the San PatricioTil the Yankee soldiers beat them down at the battle of TuribuscoThen fifteen men were whipped like mulesOn their cheeks they were hot iron brandedMade to dig the graves of fifty more who a hanging fate had handed

John Riley stands and drinks alone in a bar in Vera CruzAnd he wonders if it matters much if you win or if you lose‘Well I’m a man who can’t go home, I’m a vagabond’, says he‘I’m a victim of some wanderlust and divided loyalty’

3. NO LINEN NO LACE (Gráda) IMRO

Must you be far away the winter is coldMust you leave all behind to be called brave and boldFor the lines that you’ve drawn and the course you have steeredBut I gave you my name to have you near

Refrain: No linen no lace no porcelain face Could ever be my heart’s desireBut oh, for your soft-mouthed kissI would cross the deepest mire

These precious stones were never my fortuneAnd I never had worth for silver or goldI’ve no need for fruits from the finest of orchardsI would much rather have your hand to hold

No more please no more gifts of the worldPrecious oils or satin and pearlsA band of gold you gave to meI gave you the wealth of my soul

So while the world’s asleep tonightBe my love, be my love and lullaby

4. THE HUTT REELS (i) The Butterfly (trad., arr. Gráda) IMRO; (ii) Farewell to Sandy (David Doocey) IMRO

5. THE BUTCHER BOY (trad., arr. Gráda) IMRO

In London town where I did dwellA butcher boy, I loved right wellHe courted me, my life awayBut now with me, he will not stay

I wish, I wish, I wish in vainI wish I was a maid againA maid again I ne’er will be‘Til cherries grow on an apple tree

I wish my baby it was bornAnd smiling on its daddy’s kneeAnd me poor girl to be dead and goneWith the green, green grass growing over me

She went upstairs to make her bedAnd calling to her mother said‘Give me a chair ‘til I sit downAnd a pen and ink ‘till I write down

At every word she dropped a tearAnd at every line cried ‘Willie dearOh, what a foolish girl was ITo be led astray by a butcher boy’

He went upstairs and the door he brokeHe found her hanging from a ropeHe took his knife and he cut her downAnd in her pocket these words he foundGRADA

Go dig my grave, wide and deepPut a marble stone at my head and feetAnd in the middle, a turtle doveTo tell the world that I died for love

6. FIVE JUMPS (i) Fem Spring (trad., arr. Gráda) IMRO; (ii) New Plymouth Reel (Colin Farrell) IMRO; (iii) Edenderry Reel (trad., arr. Gráda) IMRO

7. PANAMA (Gráda) IMRO

Big old lights were fadingDrifting back from the dockIt’s only now they ask to stayBut you will not

Did you see the cormorantOr hear the glasses ringYou can say there’s nothing wrongBut it will go on

Refrain: I was casting stonesLooking for a placeWalking with flat feetOn the last day of the year

I will be in PanamaSleeping out with the tigers and bearsIn my old sweet tangerine carShe goes everywhere

I’m following that trail without a careOver the land to some perfect stageIt’s somehow strange to be nearer toMy starting place

8. PRETTY POLLY (trad., arr. Gráda) IMRO

‘Polly, pretty Polly, would you think me unkindPolly, pretty Polly, would you think me unkindIf I sat down beside you and told you my mind’

‘My mind is to marry and never to partMy mind is to marry and never to partThe first time I saw you it wounded my heart’

He led her over mountains and valleys so deepHe led her over mountains and valleys so deepPolly mistrusted and she began to weep

Saying ‘Willie, Oh Willie, I’m afraid of your waysWillie, Oh Willie, I’m afraid of your waysThe way you’ve been ramblin’ you’ll lead me astray’

He said ‘Polly, pretty Polly, your guess is about rightPolly, pretty Polly, your guess is about rightI dug on your grave the biggest part of last night’

She threw her arms around him and began for to weepShe threw her arms around him and began for to weepAt last Pretty Polly she fell asleep

He threw the dirt over her and turned away to goHe threw the dirt over her and turned away to goDown to the river where the deep waters flow

10. LOUIS COLLINS (Mississippi John Hurt) American League Music, Zap Publishing Co (BMI)

Mrs. Collins weep, Mrs. Collins moanWhat made her son Louis leave his home?Angels laid him away

Refrain: Angels laid him awayThey laid him six feet under the clayThe Angels laid him away

Oh kind friends, now isn’t it sadTo see poor Louis in a new grave yardAngels laid him away

When they heard that Louis was deadAll the women folk they dressed in redAngels laid him away

Bob shot one and Louis shot tooShot poor Collins, shot him through and throughAngels laid him away

years of The special consensus. How did that happen? I still often wonder what course the band would have taken if some of us had never made the decision to become a full-time entity. Where would we be now if we had stayed with the plan to “do this for a year or two to get it out of our systems”?

I am so grateful the band has continued to grow and prosper over the years, thanks to the talent, support and dedication of all the former and current members who have traveled the road and played the shows. Another major contributing factor to the success of The Special C is the overwhelming support we continue to receive from our friends and fans –we would not have reached this milestone without you!

David, Ryan, Rick and I recorded the first six songs in December 2009; the other six songs are from previous Special C recordings that are now out of print.

I will just say “thanks and forever grateful” here in order to make room for a list of Special C band members and alumni. This has been and continues to be an amazing journey and I thank everyone for sharing in the experience for so many years. We hope you enjoy this new chapter of our musical history!
