Elements of Art
Hatching, Cross Hatching and Scribbled Tones
Hatching
• Repeated parralel strokes with a drawing tool that produce clusters of lines creating compositional values and tonal variation usually descriptive of form or surface
Cross Hatching
• A series or cluster of parallel lines whether continuous or broken, that traverse other clusters of the same kinds of lines creating tonal and textural variations within a composition.
Scribbling
• Random, multidirectional lines used to build varied tones, textures, and densities and to define surface qualities, shape and volume, or to capture gesture or movement as in a searching line
